The Justice Arumugasamy commission that probed the death of former Chief Minister J. <keyword id="42104" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jayalalithaa" source="Orion">Jayalalithaa</keyword> has recommended an inquiry against V.K. Sasikala, a former aide of Jayalalithaa, former health minister C. Vijayabhaskar and former health secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan and Dr C. Sivakumar. The commission tabled its report in the <keyword id="6384884" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-assembly" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu Assembly</keyword> on Tuesday. The state government had formed the commission to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the former Chief Minister since her hospitalisation on September 22, 2016. The commission in its report cited eyewitnesses as claiming that the death of Jayalalithaa had taken place on December 4 instead of December 5 when Jaya's death was officially announced. The Arumugsamy commission had earlier presented the report to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The report questioned why the former Chief Minister was not taken abroad for treatment even after Dr <keyword id="3713655" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="richard-beale" source="Orion">Richard Beale</keyword> was prepared to take Jayalalithaa abroad. The report also said that even after eminent doctors from the UK and the US, who had reached <keyword id="6382967" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apollo" source="Orion">Apollo</keyword> hospital on an invitation from the state government had suggested angioplasty, it was not conducted. The report said, "They (the hospital) successfully threw it to the wind on the pretext of postponing it to achieve their aim under some pressure. Hence, the investigation is to be ordered." The Commission in its report said, "The Commission considering the above aspects is to come to no other conclusion but to indict R.1 (V.K. Sasikala) The Commission further said, "From all these aspects, the commission concludes that R.1- VK Sasikala, CW. 17- <keyword id="7707685" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ks-sivakumar" source="Orion">KS Sivakumar</keyword>, CW1366- Dr J. Jayalalithaa death case: Judicial commission seeks probe against Sasikala, ex-minister

She will want to set the record straight,” a senior journalist said.</li><li>Sasikala will be formally released from jail today after serving a four-year sentence for a corruption case. After the death of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief, Sasikala rose to power as calls for Chinamma (an epithet used to position her as the heir to Jayalalithaa, who was called Amma, meaning mother), as she was fondly called, to be the Chief Minister filled the air. It is through him⁠— and a senior civil servant <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/frenemies-forever-tracing-25-year-history-between-jayalalithaa-and-subramanian-swamy-51260">VS Chandralekha</a>, who continues to play a key role in Tamil Nadu politics even now as an advisor to senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy ⁠— that Sasikala first met Jayalalithaa, a superstar at the time being groomed by the then leader of AIADMK and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran. MGR’s death in 1987 put the spotlight on Jayalalithaa, who after being manhandled by MGR’s supporters and his wife, swept the assembly elections in 1991 and began her tenure as the state’s Chief Minister, a position she went on to win six times. During the <a href="https://scroll.in/latest/978884/vk-sasikala-pays-rs-10-crore-fine-in-disproportionate-assets-case-lawyer-says-early-release-likely">investigation</a>, it was found that Sasikala and her relatives through shell companies had bought properties worth ₹300 crore in and around Chennai. In 2020, Sasikala’s relatives paid the ₹10 crore fine on her behalf. During her tenure in jail, <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/top-prison-official-accused-of-accepting-2-crore-from-sasikala/article19265812.ece">reports</a> said that Sasikala had allegedly bribed jail officials for preferential treatment. She had also been let out first on a five-day parole in 2017 to meet her ailing husband Natarajan and then again on a 15-day parole in 2018 to attend his funeral. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="One more chance for Sasikala" comment="subhead" text="One more chance for Sasikala">One more chance for Sasikala</cmsannotation> To put it very mildly, Sasikala’s emergence from jail ahead of the Tamil Nadu polls is likely to make it a lot more interesting. <div type="image" title="sasikala1" msid="80475272" hostid="261"></div> While the DMK is touted to be ahead in the electoral race, as per many estimates, the incumbent AIADMK government under E Palanisamy is stronger than it was when she was arrested. There were many who thought the AIADMK government wouldn’t survive its full term but it did. The party did break as Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dinakaran took charge of the faction that was spun out. However, he has, in the past, underscored that his commitment is to protecting Jayalalithaa’s legacy more than any party. If he sticks to that stance, there is room for the rival factions to unite. And as far as the AIADMK is concerned, there is a need for it too. The tug of war between the Chief Minister Palanisamy and the Finance Minister O Panneerselvam continues till date. Sasikala can fix that too. The question is whether she wants to. Sasikala returns in an election year⁠ — a woman who has won and lost it all one too many times has another shot at power

If the <keyword id="138" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raj-Bhavan">Raj Bhavan</keyword> insider sources are to be believed, Governor <a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=C+Vidyasagar+Rao&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">C Vidyasagar Rao</a> is likely to swear in <a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AIADMK&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">AIADMK</a> legislature party leader <keyword id="6356358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Edappadi-K-Palaniswami">Edappadi K Palaniswami</keyword> as chief minister. However, he may be asked to prove majority on the floor of the house in a week, thereby ruling out the possibility of a composite floor test. 
 
According to a Raj Bhavan source, after meeting Palaniswami and caretaker chief minister <a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=O+Panneerselvam&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">O Panneerselvam</a>, the governor accepted the claim of Palaniswami on the basis of number. 
 
"Palaniswami submitted a list of 124 legislators, while Panneerselvam claimed that he has the support of eight legislators. The governor now has no option but to invite Palaniswami to form the government," the source told TOI. 
 
The source also said that the governor examined all aspects, including reports that a section of legislators have been kidnapped and lodged in a resort, before concluding that Palaniswami has the support of the requisite number of legislators.

Sasikala's proxy may be sworn in as CM

Jayalalithaa’s confidant VK <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> has been unanimously elected as her successor and will take over as General Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). 
 
Sasikala, a close friend and confidant of Jayalalithaa, was chosen to head the party. 
 
Reportedly, the General Council body of AIADMK passed the resolution to elect Sasikala Natarajan as the General Secretary almost unanimously. However there were few dissent notes as well. The post fell vacant following the demise of party general secretary and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5. 
 
The meeting was attended by over 2000 party workers, but Sasikala wasn’t present there. 
 
Yesterday, clashes broke out between AIADMK workers and supporters of Rajya Sabha member Sasikala Pushpa outside the ruling party's office in Chennai. 
 
Sasikala Pushpa had earlier expressed her wish to contest for the party's general secretary post. Sasikala was expelled from the AIADMK sometime back but did not resign from the Rajya Sabha.

Sasikala is the new general secretary of AIADMK

In a major setback to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AIADMK+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">AIADMK </a>General Secretary <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=VK+Sasikala&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">VK Sasikala</a>, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> upheld the trial court’s judgment in 21-year-old disproportionate case and send her to four years jail. Now, <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> stands disqualified to take over as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tamil+Nadu+Chief+Minister&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Tamil Nadu Chief Minister</a>. 
 
She has been disqualified to contest elections for 10 years. Sasikala had served close to six months in jail earlier. 
 "Traitors have insulted Amma," the <keyword id="41902" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> tweeted soon after the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Supreme+Court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Supreme Court</a>'s verdict which came after a week-long bitter battle between Sasikala and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=O+Panneerselvam&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">O Panneerselvam</a> over CM's chair. 
 As a result, the coast is now clear for <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> caretaker Chief Minister <keyword id="6361660" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="O-Panneerselvam">O Panneerselvam</keyword>, who has been locked in a bitter battle with Sasikala since last week over the CM's chair, to take over on the post.

Sasikala sent to four years jail in disproportionate assets case; CM hopes dead

Soon after caretaker Chief Minister <keyword id="6361660" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="O-Panneerselvam">O Panneerselvam</keyword> visited Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, AIADMK General Secretary VK <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> today staked claim to form the government during a 40-minute meeting with Rao, who arrived in the city this afternoon. Sasikala gave the Governor a letter presumably containing the names of MLAs who elected her as AIADMK Legislature Party Leader, and requested him to invite her to form the government. 
 However, the Governor's response is not immediately known. Sasikala arrived at 7.25 pm at the Raj Bhavan and left after a meeting that lasted about 40 minutes. At 5 pm, <keyword id="291784" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panneerselvam">Panneerselvam</keyword> had called on Rao and after a brief meeting told reporters that "good things will happen and dharma will triumph". The Chief Minister is now meeting his supporters at his Greenways Road official residence. Sasikala was elected Legislature Party Leader on February 5, paving the way for her becoming the chief minister. Subsequently, Panneerselvam raised a banner of revolt on February 7, along with his supporters. He currently has the support of leaders like former Ministers KP Munusamy, Natham R Viswanathan, Rajya Sabha MP V Maithreyan and a few sitting MLAs.

Sasikala calls on Tamil Nadu Governor, stakes claim to form government

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sasikala&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">VK Sasikala</a>, who suddenly emerged as a heir to deceased <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AIADMK&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">AIADMK</a> supremo <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=J+Jayalalithaa&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">J </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=J+Jayalalithaa&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jayalalithaa</a>'s legacy, has a verdict against herself and it seems that this might end the political uncertainty in the state with the road now clear for O <keyword id="291784" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panneerselvam">Panneerselvam</keyword> to become the chief minister. 
 
But it’s not going to be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Panneerselvam&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Panneerselvam</a> as <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> cannot be written off entirely and her sentence would end in just four years. After that she can come back to haunt the party. 
 
There are many reasons why the SC verdict may not be the end of Sasikala: 
 
Sasikala will continue to have friends within the party even when she is in jail and OPS is the CM as she staged a putsch against Panneerselvam to replace him as Jayalalitha's political heir. 
 Rebels will keep rocking <keyword id="41902" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> as OPS can never have <keyword id="42104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jayalalithaa">Jayalalithaa</keyword>'s mass appeal and the kind of control she had over the party. Sasikala will use this and can become the rallying point for these rebels. 
 
Once out of the jail in four year, Sasikala will do everything to split the party. 
 
This SC verdict may not be all bad for Sasikala as if Panneerselvam were able to lure majority party MLAs, it would have proved that party had no faith in Sasikala. The masses too would have accepted that but now the message that would go to the masses is-Sasikala has been stopped from heading the state by a court order but not due to lack of support in the party. Therefore, when she is back, she can still have popular support. 
 
Sasikala has once proved to the people that she is Jayalalithaa's legitimate successor. And once these four years are over and she is out of jail, the situation in the state might be very conducive for her power play. OPS cannot have the mass support Jayalalithaa had so the party's base will only erode from now on. All this will help Sasikala project herself as the next mass leader.

Sasikala’s CM dreams might have ended but don’t write her off. Here’s why

Jayalalithaa was laid to rest with full state honours, next to MGR memorial at Marina beach in Chennai. Jayalalithaa died of cardiac arrest on December 05 at Apollo Hospital.Hundreds of thousands of people thronged the final journey Jayalalithaa from Rajaji Hall to Marina beach. 
 
Tears welled up the eyes of supports as people bid adieu to the ‘iron lady’ of Indian politics. 
 
Earlier in the day, President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other senior leaders, came down to Chennai and paid floral tributes to Jayalalithaa. 
 
Lakhs of people poured outside Rajaji Hall, where Jayalalithaa's body lay draped in the Indian flag. 
 
Seven -day mourning has been declared in the state. Schools were shut and thousands of police deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. 
People wailed and displayed dramatic emotions, beating their chests and heads. There were loud cries of "Amma, Amma". 
 
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena also condoled her death, saying Jayalalithaa had a "towering presence in Indian politics". 
"At this time of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu," he added.

AIADMK supremo and former <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> chief minister J <keyword id="42104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jayalalithaa">Jayalalithaa</keyword> scored a sensational legal victory on Monday, as the Karnataka high court acquitted her of all corruption charges in the 19 year old Rs 66.65-crore disproportionate assets case that had been hanging like an albatross around her neck for nearly two decades. 
 Justice C R Kumaraswamy overturned the September 27, 2014 verdict of a special court in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>. The judge also acquitted her associates - <keyword id="844490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sasikala-Natarajan">Sasikala Natarajan</keyword>, her niece Ilavarasi, her nephew and the chief minister's disowned foster son <keyword id="870504" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sudhakaran">Sudhakaran</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="2845578" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru-special-judge">Bengaluru special judge</keyword> John Michael Cunha had sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in jail and fined Rs 100 crore on September 27, 2014. She was convicted in the disproportionate assets case that was launched by Subramanian Swamy on 20 August 1996. 
 
The special court had sentenced Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran to four years in jail and fined Rs 10 crores each. 
 
The judgement by the special court had disqualified her from the post of CM and legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu. 
 
Now, her acquittal by the Karnataka high court means she can assume the chief minister's post. ​Jayalalithaa is expected to address the press on Monday. 
 
AIADMK supporters started celebrations as soon as the high court pronounced it verdict. They celebrated sweets. 
 
A large number of her supporters assembled in front of Jayalalithaa's residence in Chennai, expecting she will greet them soon. 
 
The party workers, who have been praying for her acquittal in the case, broke coconuts as thanksgiving.

TTV Dhinakaran is one of the key leaders in the state facing the 2021 state assembly elections. He is fighting a tough battle against the AIADMK’s Kadambur Raju, and DMK alliance’s CPM candidate K Srinivasan. This created a triangular contest for the Kovilpatti seat. Dhinakaran in active politics TTV Dhinakaran is the nephew of VK Sasikala and the founder of AMMK (Amma Makkal Munettra Kazhagam). Dinakaran is an incumbent MLA from RK Nagar in Chennai. After AIADMK ousted him along with VK Sasikala following her conviction in a corruption case, TTV Dhinakaran launched his own party under the name AMMK. Failing the widespread anticipations about her re-entry into politics following her release from the prison, VK Sasikala announced her decision to stay away from politics. The resulting scenario found Dhinakaran all alone to fight for his fate in the political platform. The election scene in Kovilpatti A lot of voters in the constituency seem to share displeasure with AIADMK’s Kadambur Raju. During the last elections, he won from here with a thin margin of 428 votes. In the 2019 local body elections, AMMK bagged the union chairman post in Kayathar by winning from 10 wards. AMMK also won from minister Kadambur Raju’s own village called Chidambarapuram. AMMK’s south zone secretary Manikkaraja took charge as the chairman of Kayathar. Manikkaraja hails from a rich landlord family that has been enjoying close bonds with the Sasikala family since long. Manikkaraja’s role in Dhinakaran’s decision to fight from Kovilpatti Earlier, TTV Dhinakaran wanted to contest from Usilampatti constituency. It was Manikkaraja who reminded him that the people of this constituency are not so happy with Kadambur Raju and he could win last time from here only with a very thin margin. The size of the Mukkulathor population here is 23 percent. Manikkavelu assured Dhinakaran that he could force not less than 50,000 among the 65,000 voters in Kayathar union to extend their support in Dhinakaran’s favour. Winning prospects for Dhinakaran from Kovilpatti One of the downsides Dhinakaran faces here is that the people of other communities see him as the representative of Mukkulathor. MDMK general secretary Vaiko enjoys a strong reputation in this constituency. It is possible that Srinivasan can command a sizeable Naicker community vote. So, Dhinakaran can hope to win from here only if he could have attracted the votes of other communities besides those of Mukkulathor. The AIADMK leader, who no leader could match in terms of her flamboyant populism and superior leadership, left behind huge assets she accumulated in her lifetime.

Real estate 
Jayalalithaa's massive 24,000 sqft residential property called Veda Nilayam in Poes Garden is valued at Rs 43.96 crore. The property was purchased by her mother in 1967 for Rs 1.32 lakh. 
 
Jayalalithaa owns 14.50 acres of farm land in Jeedimetla village in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana and 3.43 acres in Cheyyur Village in Kancheepuram village in Tamil Nadu. She had purchased the property in Telangana in 1968 along with her mother Sandhya and the Cheyyur property in 1981. 
 
She owns four commercial buildings, including one each here and in Hyderabad. According to reports, one of this property will belong to VN Sudhakaran, Jayalalithaa's once 'foster son' and nephew of Sasikala. 
 
Cars 
Jayalalithaa owned two Toyoto Prado SUVs, a Tempo Traveller, a Tempo Trax, a Mahindra Jeep, an Ambassador car of 1980 make, a Mahindra Bolero, a Swaraj Mazada Maxi, and a 1990 model Contessa. The nine vehicles are worth around Rs 42,25,000. 
 
Jewellery 
The value of her 21,280.300 grams of gold jewellery could not be ascertained as it was with the Karnataka government treasury in connection with the disproportionate assets case. She had, however, declared possession of 1,250 kg of silver articles valued at Rs 3,12,50,000. 
 
According to the affidavit filed for the RK Nagar constituency for the 2016 elections, Jayalalithaa owns movable assets worth Rs 41.63 crore and immovable assets Rs 72.09 crore. In the column on investment in companies, she said "various deposits and shares with companies have been seized by the police and with the custody of the court in case relating to Spl.C.C.No.208 of 2004 on the file of 36th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, (Special Court) Bengaluru." The reference is with regard to the disproportionate assets case against her. 
 
Investments 
Jayalalithaa had made investments in five firms as a 'partner', which are together worth Rs 27.44 crore. These include Shri Jaya Publications, Sasi Enterprises, Kodanad Estate, Royal Valley Floritech Exports and Green T Estate, the affidavit stated. 
 
As per the last declaration, she had Rs 41,000 cash in hand, listed Rs 2.04 crore as liabilities and declared agriculture in the profession-occupation column.
