A decisive phase in India's fight against coronavirus began in the wee hours on Tuesday as the first consignment of Covishield <keyword id="79555" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaccines">vaccines</keyword> left <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> for <keyword id="181972" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune-airport">Pune airport</keyword>, four days ahead of the nationwide inoculation drive launch. Three temperature-controlled trucks rolled out of the Serum Institute gates shortly before 5 am and left for Pune airport, from where the vaccines will be flown across India. The trucks carried 478 boxes of the vaccines, each box weighing 32 kg, a source involved in the vaccine transport arrangements told . The trucks left the Serum Institute of India premises at Manjari and reached the airport, located 15 km from the facility. From the airport, the vaccines will be dispatched to 13 locations across the country by 10 am, the source said. A 'puja' was performed before the vehicles left the facility. The locations where these Covishield vaccines will be flown from Pune include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, <keyword id="6354321" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Karnal, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guwahati, Lucknow, Chandigarh and Bhubaneswar. The vaccines will be flown from Pune in eight commercial flights, including two cargo flights, the source said. The first cargo flight will cover Hyderabad, Vijayawada, and Bhubaneswar and the second cargo flight will go to Kolkata and Guwahati, he added. The consignment for Mumbai will leave by road. Trucks belonging to Kool-ex Cold Chain Ltd are being used to ferry the vaccine stocks from Serum Institute. Among the first batch, one consignment is scheduled to be shipped by an Air India cargo flight to Ahmedabad. On Monday, Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel tweeted that his state will receive the first consignment of coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday at 10.45 am at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad. He will also participate in the Rashtriya Ekta Divas Parade. The inauguration programme will most likely be the last item on the PM's agenda on Saturday. He will take off from the Kevadiya Jetty built on lake number 3 near the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The sea plane will arrive at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. From there, the PM is likely to return to Delhi. The seaplane services will be started by the aviation company, SpiceJet. The services will be provided incentives and benefits under the central government's 'Udaan' scheme. The scheme is being implemented as per a tripartite agreement between the Gujarat government, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). For the maiden flight, the company has procured a Twin Otter 300 seaplane, which has arrived at Kevadiya SoU jetty. Infrastructural facilities such as a floating jetty are ready at both the places of landing and takeoff at lake number 3 at Kevadiya and at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. Before that the PM will take part in the National Unity Parade. The police forces of Gujarat Police, Central Reserved Armed Forces, the Border Security Force, the Indo Tibetan Border Police, the Central Industrial Security Force and the National Security Guards will participate in the parade. The PM will also witness a rifle drill by female officers of the CRPF. The Indian Air Force will be performing a flypast. Modi to launch India's first seaplane service tomorrow

Eight new <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> positive cases were reported in Gujarat on Wednesday, all of them in state's financial capital Ahmedabad. Till now, 82 active positive cases are present in Gujarat, with six deaths due to corona outbreak. "A male (68) with interstate travel history, male (54) with international travel history and a female (58) infected locally have been admitted in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Hospital. Another male (67) who got infected locally has been admitted in the Sola Civil Hospital," added Ravi. "Out of total 82 positive cases, the conditions of 66 is stable, six have been discharged, while condition of three is critical and are on ventilator," added Ravi. The number of persons under quarantine is 19,206, including 18,487 at home and 743 in government institutes, and 253 in private facilities. As many as 418 FIR have been filed against persons violating the quarantine conditions. "We have tested 1,586 samples, of which 1,501 were negative, 82 positive and results of three are pending," added Ravi. This takes the total Corona positive cases in the state to 82, excluding 6 deaths. The highest number of 31 cases is in Ahmedabad, followed by 11 in Gandhinagar, 10 each in Surat and Rajkot, nine in Vadodara, six in Bhavnagar, two in Gir-Somnath and one each in Porbandar, Mahesana and Kutch. Out of the 82 positive cases, 33 have foreign travel history, eight inter-state tavel and 41 with locally transmitted disease. Among the six victims in Gujarat is a 67-year-old male from Surat with co-morbid conditions. An 85-year-old female from Ahmedabad died on Wednesday due to co-morbid conditions. A 70- year-old male from Bhavnagar with travel history to Delhi succumbed on Thursday. Three more deaths were reported on Saturday, Sunday and Monday -- a male (47) and female (46) from Ahmedabad and a female (45) from Jesar block in Bhavnagar respectively. All deceased were suffering from co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac ailments and other several complications. New Delhi, Jul 6 () Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Monday said India has shown to the world that despite the crippling coronavirus crisis, the show goes on here as smoothly as during the pre-pandemic times. He was speaking after inaugurating the IAS professional course phase-II (2018 batch) at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie through video conference. Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel, said that civil services in 2020 have assumed a pan-Indian character in true sense as it has representation from almost all states and union territories in the last couple of years. He said, for a heterogeneous country like India, it's a huge asset and in tune with the dream of the founding father of civil services in the country -- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The minister said that officers have an opportunity to become the architect of a new India, the foundation of which was laid down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Singh said that over the last 10 weeks, India has shown to the world that despite the crippling coronavirus crisis, the show goes on here as smoothly as during the pre-pandemic times, a statement issued by the Personnel Ministry said. The minister said, in the 73rd year of Independence, India stands tall, strong and is looking at the future with great hope and potential. The minister particularly mentioned that a three-month central government stint as Assistant Secretaries for IAS officers in the beginning of their career started a couple of years back added tremendously in their capacity building. Similarly, amendment in the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 brought about in 2018 gives adequate protection to honest officers from harassment as for the first time bribe giver was also brought into the ambit of the Act, he said. Singh said that so far more than 25 lakh officers have registered on iGoT platform (online module) of the Personnel Ministry fitted to the training needs of frontline workers tackling COVID-19. He underlined that this measure will help in training an IAS officer into a "corona warrior". Dwelling on the concept of 115 Aspirational Districts based on 49 key indicators, Singh said that based on a scientifically designed mechanism, each aspirational district was to focus on improving these key indicators and raise its rating viz-a-viz the best performing district of the state and the best performing district of the country in the given indicators. He said that these are not necessarily backward districts and placing young officers here will bring fast changes in the indicators. In his address, Sanjeev Chopra, the director of LBSNAA, said that for conducting the online sessions, the learning management system (LMS) known as GYAN is used at the academy. "It is a one-point access online platform for the participants. Any participants can log in and access anything relating to the course e.g. power points, reading materials, live classes on video, assignments, quizzes, past classes etc," Chopra said. (Eds: Adds details) Bhubaneswar, July 6 () Odisha's COVID-19 tally climbed to 9,526 with 456 more people, including a BJP MLA, testing positive for the virus, while the death toll reached 38 after two other patients succumbed to the disease, a health department official said on Monday. The two deceased persons hailed from Ganjam and Jajpur districts. While the COVID-19 death toll in Ganjam district has mounted to 21, Jajpur registered its first such death. A 77-year-old man hailing from Ganjam, who was suffering from hypertension, and a 64-year-old man from Jajpur district, a patient of diabetes, were the latest COVID-19 fatalities in the state. This apart, the health department said 10 coronavirus patients have also died, but the cause of their deaths was "due to other reasons". Ganjam District Collector V A Kulange said, "We lost our four COVID warriors (people who work among the positive patients)." He, however, did not mention when the four died. With detection of new cases, the COVID-19 tally in Odisha increased to 9,526, the official said, adding that 309 cases have been reported from different quarantine centres while 147 persons are local contacts. The number of active cases in the state increased to 3,254 while 6,224 patients have so far recovered from the infection in the state. The BJP MLA from Nilgiri, Sukanta Kumar Nayak, became the first lawmaker in the state to get infected with COVID-19. In view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state, Odisha Assembly Speaker S N Patro suspended all House Committee meetings till further notice. Nayak was admitted to a special COVID Hospital in Balasore. "I have tested positive. I have attended several meetings in Bhubaneswar, Nilgiri and also the funeral of an ex-MLA Madan Mohan Dutta recently," he told . Balasore district sub-collector Harishchandra Jena said the government has launched contact tracing of the MLA and undertaken disinfection of the government offices visited by BJP leader. Odisha on Sunday conducted 4,827 tests. Of the total 2,97,234 coronavirus tests conducted in the state so far, the RMRC, Bhubaneswar has alone tested over one lakh samples in three-and-a-half months. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) for reaching one lakh test milestone. Meanwhile, the state government has prepared a special strategy for premier hospitals which have reported COVID-19 cases. As many as 107 positive cases have been detected in the Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC), while cases have also been reported from the state's health facility like SCB Medical College Hospital and Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack, an official said. Health workers, including doctors and nurses, from AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur, Ispat Government Hospital in Rourkela and other places have also been infected with the virus. The OPD of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics, also known as Sishu Bhawan, in Cuttack was shut after a six-year-old child tested positive for the virus. Nabarangpur District Collector Ajit Kumar Mishra said a COVID-19 patient undergoing treatment at a dedicated hospital escaped from the facility by jumping the boundary wall. A case has been registered in this regard. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner P C Chaudhury said the rapid antibody test for COVID-19 will be introduced in the state capital by the end of this week. "We have set a target to conduct 2,000 to 2,500 tests. Micro plans are being made on how and in which areas the test will be conducted. It is a part of the serological survey," Chaudhury said. This includes the proposed construction of a 100-metre statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya for 330 crores. </li><li>The funds are better spent elsewhere. <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> lags behind the rest of the country on a number of important <keyword id="6355210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="development">development</keyword> indicators. </li></ul> India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, falls short on a number of important development indicators. The Yogi Adityanath-led administration is seeking funds for 86 religious tourism projects under <a href="http://www.mca.gov.in/SearchableActs/Section135.htm">Section 135</a> of the 2013 Companies Act, which orders companies of a certain size to allocate 2% of their average net profit for three years to corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. The projects require an investment of 2,725 crores, according to an investment prospectus prepared by the state government with Ernst and Young. A key project is the construction of a 100-metre tall statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, which is expected to cost 330 crores. This is nearly triple the amount of funds that the government allocated to providing books and uniforms to school kids in its <a href="http://budget.up.nic.in/budgetbhashan/budgetbhashan2018_2019.pdf">budget for 2018-19</a>. The project, which was <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/yogi-adityanath-government-proposes-grand-statue-of-ram-at-ayodhya-river-banks-in-uttar-pradesh-4882631/">first announced </a>in October last year, brings to mind the spending spree of Mayawati, the former chief minister of UP, whose investments in parks and statues cost the state an estimated <a href="http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/mayawati-memorials-cost-rs-5919-cr-says-lda/951755/">5,919 crores.</a> Other projects in the prospectus include the 100-crore redevelopment of a pilgrimage route in Varanasi and 45-crore additions to the Gorakhpur Temple, where Adityanath is the head priest. When <a href="http://finance.bih.nic.in/documents/csr-policy.pdf">the CSR policy</a> was drawn up, it was envisioned as a way to get corporate India to contribute to social causes and improve development outcomes. Under a prescriptive (but not exhaustive) list, the major CSR activities recognised were eradicating hunger, promoting education, encouraging gender equality, improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare, protecting the environment and skill development. However, the act has consistently been used to divert funds to unnecessary ends, even at the behest of the government in some cases. In October last year, four public sector oil companies - ONGC, HPCL, Indian Oil Corp and Oil India Ltd- spent a combined total of <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/X0jTp5bYxHuPWGvmsJVvHP/PSUs-devote-over-Rs121-crore-of-CSR-funds-towards-Statue-of.html">121 crores</a> on the construction of a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat. The funds that the UP government is asking for are better spent elsewhere. Perhaps in <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/lucknow/with-shoes-worth-rs-266-cr-in-tatters-up-kids-walk-barefoot-to-schools/story-STKRcOIz7MhufYXVBWIUbP.html">providing better footwear </a>for schoolchildren or effectively implementing <a href="https://thewire.in/labour/mnrega-continues-to-fail-common-man-rural-up">work guarantee schemes</a> in villages or providing <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/uttar-pradesh-physically-challenged-son-takes-man-on-cart-to-health-centre-ferries-body-back-5113823/">community health centres with vans.</a> However, this is the same administration that has allocated 98.5 crores to cow shelters and 1,500 crores to Kumbh Mela festivities in its budget for next year. It clearly needs to get its priorities straight.

Yogi Adityanath administration looking to tap development funds for statue building

In a small town called <keyword id="2648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand">Anand</keyword> in western India in 1946 farmers were having a difficult time having to deal with the exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel. Refusing to be cowed down by the cartel, farmers of this area went on a milk strike. And they approached the great Indian patriot Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution. His advice was natural, start a cooperative movement. 
 
And they did. 
 
Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. The cooperative movement was a movement against the atrocities of Polson Dairy, a locally-owned dairy in Anand, which procured milk from farmers at very low rates to sell to the Bombay (now Mumbai) government. 
 28 year old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala, <keyword id="168701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verghese-Kurien">Verghese Kurien</keyword> arrived in Anand in 1949 as a government employee to manage a dairy. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job he had already made up his mind to leave but upon Tribhuvandas Patel’s request he agreed to stay back for few months to oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. In 1955 <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword> (then short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) was born. Verghese Kurien was in almost every way the architect of Amul. He went from helping farmers repair their machinery to revolutionising the Indian dairy industry by scripting Operation Flood, a cooperative movement that turned India from a net importer of milk into one of the world’s largest producers. Not for nothing was Dr. Verghese Kurien called the Milkman of India. 
 
The first dairy, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which created Amul in 1955, handed over the brand name to Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973. Thus, in 1973 the GCMMF was established to market milk and milk products manufactured by six district cooperative unions of Gujarat. 
 
 
 Branding played a major role for Amul’s success, the (original) Amul Girl was created by <keyword id="245066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sylvester-daCunha">Sylvester daCunha</keyword> (daCunha Communications) to counter the Polson dairy girl. Polson’s sexy village belle didn’t stand a chance to the tubby little moppet in the polka-dotted dress and a matching ribbon. Amul ads were cleverly designed to add a tinge of nationalism to an essentially rural revolution. The first Amul Ad campaign came in 1967 in Bombay (now Mumbai). And the response was phenomenal... and continues to be. Amul is also credited with a Guinness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titled Manthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. 
 
And then, Amul became a brandname in its own right. It is said that for Operation Flood, Kurien’s idea of having farmers own the brand went a long way in creating a sense of ownership and, in turn, responsibility for the product’s quality. Since the mid-90s, Amul has been able to take the range outside the security of traditional products, milk powder and butter. Amul diversified to everything from ice-cream, curd to long-life flavoured milk. Brand Amul is now present in over 50 countries. 
 
 
 
Amul has come a long way since its inception. The contribution of Amul in development of rural India as well as economic growth of the nation is legendary.

At a time when sense of humour in India is a debatable, questionable and arguable topic, comic legend <keyword id="5630" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jerry-Seinfeld">Jerry Seinfeld</keyword> decides to visit India. He will be performing in, Mumbai on March 14 and 15 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Worli. This is a double treat for his <keyword id="207039" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="legendary-comedian">legendary comedian</keyword>’s fans since this is the first time ever he would be performing in India, and the whole of Asia, so to say. 
 
The tickets are priced merely at Rs 7,500 per head. And no, we aren’t kidding, okay! 
 People who grew up watching Jerry <keyword id="5631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Seinfeld">Seinfeld</keyword> have been watching re-runs since the longest time now. Because, the world famous comedian stopped his series nearly 17 years ago. So, in just about a year, a kid who would be born when he stopped airing his episodes, will get to vote if elections are held anytime next year. It has really been THAT long since he regaled people. His legion, however, hasn’t forgotten him yet. 
 
The Emmy and Golden Globe winning comedian was super good at playing a semi-fictional version of self in one of the most popular sitcoms ever in the history of television. In Mumbai, he will be offering a double treat to his fans, by staging two shows! 
 But really, Seinfeld would have been in India much earlier if the original storyline which was based on <keyword id="84280" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harold-Pinter">Harold Pinter</keyword>’s play of the same name ‘The Betrayal’. There were scenes which were to be shot in India, but were deleted for some reason. 
 
Now, all this is not really important when we think of the time when Seinfeld has decided to perform in India. Who will the joke be on? The recent AIB Roast has proved even humour can be double sided, and there’s not much left to laugh in the country. Actors don’t agree with the tone and tenor, and then there are stand up comedians who would insist their script is sacred over people’s ability to laugh or to get offended, whichever happens first. 
 
The Brooklyn-born co-creator of Seinfeld series insists India has always fascinated him. The culture amazes him. And he says he is very excited to be here, and ‘make fun in person’. Till this point, all is well with the plot. But then, things begin to get a little knotty here for two reasons. One, like we already mentioned, the issue of ‘sense of humour’ of people in general especially post the AIB Roast phase. Now, added complication comes through in another form. Post-Barack Obama visit, India has not been too very excited to roll out a red carpet to people who come here on invitation/or on their own and then go back to make some really ‘hurtful’ observations about the country. If monolithic observations are all that you can make, India is the best country to avoid since it isn’t an easy nut to crack on one visit. So, you see, the plot is getting all complicated with a diplomatic issue taking the centre stage. Nah, we were simply kidding, of course! 
 
But, really at a time when humour has turned into a premium, one anticipation would be about how the people would respond since Seinfeld is bound to crack some clever one liners involving politicians and their ways. Hopefully, his script writer has done enough homework on India’s cultural challenges and hasn’t written anything that would sound insensitive or invoke angry reactions from people. 
 
Because, given the city of Mumbai, which has high resilience towards life the city is also known for violent reactions to something that doesn’t go down too well with the given temperament of the people and the city. And then, there is also a hope that city will laugh with Seinfeld too! 
In a way, it would also be a relief that apart from diplomatic visits and disappointments, Seinfeld is in India to regale people. May be, just maybe, he will learn to appreciate a thing or two about Indian way of life without getting too shallow about it. Because when you look at the west, a joke is good way of bonding; but a ridicule can snap bridges forever.
