The <keyword id="6710591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mugger-crocodile">mugger crocodile</keyword> or broad-snouted crocodile (scientifically known as Crocodylus palustris) is listed as an endangered species in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act. While the plan may boost tourism around Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, some of the top officials have reportedly been questioning the idea. According to them, removing these crocodiles from Narmada and bringing them back to a human habitat will affect the natural balance. According to one forest official, the crocodiles will likely be released in a reservoir around the dam but the scale of the evacuation could potentially harm their breeding cycles. India’s Civil Aviation Department and the Gujarat government have been working on a plan to build a seaplane terminal near Pond 3, also known as Magar talav (crocodile pond). India is moving 500 endangered crocodiles to launch a seaplane service near the Statue of Unity: Report

Aurang River in Valsad taluka crossed the danger mark amid incessant rainfall in the upstream areas. <keyword id="20310051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood" source="keywords">Flood</keyword> waters of the Kaveri and Ambika rivers in neighbouring Navsari district inundated low-lying areas. Approximately 1,000 people were shifted to safety in Gandevi taluka in Navsari district after heavy rainfall triggered a flood in Ambika and Kaveri rivers on Sunday. Seven labourers stranded in a flooded pond were rescued by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel on Sunday, Valsad district administration stated. "Around 162 people were relocated and shifted to shelter homes from low-lying areas in Valsad city. A man was swept away in flood water in Dharampur taluka of the district," said incharge collector AR Jha. Gandevi MLA Naresh Patel said at least 1,000 people were relocated to safety in the area in Navsari district. "An elderly man was swept away in the flood and effort is underway to recover his body," Patel said. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel spoke with collectors of Navsari and Valsad districts, directing them to shift residents of low-lying areas to safer places and prevent loss of life and property due to rain. Khergam taluka in Navsari district was pounded by 229 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 6 AM on Monday, followed by 185 mm and 180 mm rainfall in Dharampur and Valsad talukas, respectively. At least 12 talukas, including the Dangs and Tapi districts in south Gujarat, received more than 100 mm of rainfall, according to SEOC. With the recent wet spell, Gujarat has recorded more than 67 per cent of the total average rainfall of the monsoon season so far. Kutch zone received the highest rainfall of 86 per cent in the state, followed by the south Gujarat region, and Saurashtra zone with 81 per cent and 77 per cent of rainfall, respectively. Comparatively, north and east-central Gujarat recorded around 50 per cent of the cumulative average rainfall of the season so far, the SEOC stated. With upstream areas receiving heavy rains, the water storage in the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district crossed 60 per cent of its storage capacity at 2,04,901 million cubic feet (mcft). The water storage in another 206 <keyword id="20133650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reservoirs" source="keywords">reservoirs</keyword> across Gujarat reached 3,25,972 mcft at 58.19 per cent of their total storage capacity, while 47 reservoirs are brimming. Ten other reservoirs are 90 to 100 per cent full, raising a high alert, the state Water Resources Department said. A total of 13 reservoirs in south Gujarat region are 70.32 per cent full. The water storage in 141 reservoirs in Saurashtra region increased to 52.68 per cent. In Kutch, 20 reservoirs are 52.15 per cent full.

Heavy rains pound Navsari and Valsad districts in Gujarat, rivers in spate; 1,000 people evacuated

In a statement, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said work is on to clear roads by removing fallen trees. According to officials, more than 6,000 people living along the banks of the Narmada river in Bharuch district have been shifted to safer places in the last two days after the water level rose to 40 feet due to discharge from the Sardar Sarovar Dam. Several areas in Bharuch city and tehsil and many localities and villages in Ankleshwar are still under knee-deep water even though the water level has been decreasing slowly since Monday morning. The current water level of the Narmada river is 37.72 feet, nearly 10 feet above the danger mark of 28 feet, at the Golden Bridge that connects Ankleshwar to Bharuch, said an official of Bharuch District Emergency Response Centre (BDERC). On Sunday, the water level of the river went up to 40 feet at the bridge due to heavy discharge of water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) located upstream. Dandiya Bazaar and other areas in Bharuch city, and several societies and villages in Ankleshwar city and taluka are still inundated in knee-deep water. The situation is improving gradually as water is slowly decreasing, the BDERC official said. In view of heavy rains in different parts of Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said he has been in constant touch with collectors of the affected districts. "Relief and rescue operations are being carried out wherever needed with the help of 10 teams of both NDRF and SDRF. In all, nearly 11,900 persons living in low-lying areas of Vadodara, Bharuch, Narmada, Dahod, Panchmahal, Anand and Gandhinagar districts were shifted to shelter homes. "As many as 270 stranded citizens were rescued by the administration while work is on to clear roads by removing fallen trees," CM Patel said. Meanwhile, Army personnel rescued 12 people stranded on a small island in the Narmada river passing from Karjan taluka in Vadodara district after a 48-hour operation, a government release said. "After 48 hours of rescue operation, Army personnel successfully rescued and brought these 12 people, including women and children, on the shore on Monday morning using boats," it stated. The India Meteorological Department said "extremely heavy rainfall" occurred at isolated places in Arvalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, and Sabarkantha districts during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am (on Monday). The IMD predicted "light to moderate" rain at several places across Gujarat on Monday and Tuesday. As per the rainfall data shared by the State Emergency Operations Centre, 29 tehsils received more than 40 mm downpour between 6 am and 2 pm on Monday. Visavadar taluka in Junagadh district received 283 mm of rainfall in the eight hours till 2 pm. Visavadar was followed by Mendarda taluka in Junagadh (165 mm), Radhanpur in Patan (156 mm), Bhabhar in Banaskantha (144 mm), Vanthali in Junagadh (129 mm), Deodar in Banaskantha (108 mm), Deesa in Banaskantha (91 mm), Mehsana tehsil (91 mm) and Bagsara in Amreli district (91 mm).

Gujarat: Narmada above danger mark in Bharuch

As <keyword id="6385438" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rains" source="Orion">heavy rains</keyword> lashed <keyword id="6354766" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gujarat" source="Orion">Gujarat</keyword> for the first 15 days of the monsoon season, State Chief Minister <keyword id="908125" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bhupendra-patel" source="Orion">Bhupendra Patel</keyword> has said that with the timely decisions taken by his government more than 33,000 people have been evacuated and the loss to life and property has been brought under control. Patel on Thursday said, "There are currently 18 NDRF teams and 18 SDRF platoons operating across the state. Another eight teams are in reserve." The damage to property is being estimated by surveying the area affected by the rains. Due to heavy rains, power supply was disrupted in nearly 5,150 villages, of which electricity in 5,110 villages has been restored. Farmers have sown Kharif crops on more than 44,36,980 hectare of land, which is more than 50 per cent area cultivated for Kharif crops. Most of the dams are nearly 50 per cent filled with rain water. For example, the Sardar Sarovar dam is 48 per cent filled more than its capacity with rain water. The average rainfall recorded in 14 days of July this year is more than double that during the same time period in 2021. In 2021, the average rainfall was 155.92 mm but it is 397.02 mm in 2022 while the average rainfall in the state is 850 mm. Nearly 50 per cent of the total rainfall for July has been recorded in 20 talukas from July 8-11. Each taluka has received more than 50 mm of rainfall till now. For the first time in this decade, Gujarat has received such a huge amount of rainfall in July. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister <keyword id="350454" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajendra-trivedi" source="Orion">Rajendra Trivedi</keyword>, while briefing the media about a review meeting over the rainfall situation in the state at Gandhinagar, said that due to heavy rains, six persons were rescued by a chopper with the help of <keyword id="4892872" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="state-coast-guard" source="Orion">State Coast Guard</keyword>. However, rescue operations are still underway to airlift people. He added that a total of 39,177 people have been relocated to safer places by the state administration, of which a total of 17,394 people have returned home while 21,243 people have taken shelter at various places and are being provided adequate arrangements, including food by the administration. A total of 570 civilians trapped in water have been rescued while eight districts in the state are still on red alert, he said. Trivedi added that 43 deaths have been reported in the state since July 7, with the highest number of deaths due to lightning. In addition, 477 animal deaths have also been reported. Out of 14,610 state transport bus routes operating in villages across the state, routes to 148 villages have been closed for safety reasons. He said that due to incessant rain since July 7, a total of 126 houses have been completely damaged and 19 huts have been completely washed away. The rain-affected areas will be surveyed on a war footing and assistance will be provided for damaged houses and huts. As many as 178 persons were rescued by the NDRF in Sambhoi village of Vadodara which includes 67 men, 76 women and 35 children. In Kutiana taluka of Porbandar district, Devda village was flooded due to torrential rains since early Thursday morning. As a result, the farms were turned into islands and the locals were trying to dispose the water themselves. The Kharo dam of Bantwa village overflowed on Thursday. As many as 14 roads in Porbandar district have been closed due to heavy rains. Heavy rains in Ranavav and Kutiana talukas flooded the towns. The <keyword id="2990674" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="road-and-building-department" source="Orion">Road and Building Department</keyword> closed the roads and instructed the people not to pass through them due to high flow of water on the roads. On the other hand, five women labourers were crushed when a wall collapsed near Dasheshwar farm near Ognaj. All of them were evacuated by the fire brigade team and sent to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment. N.R. Vaghela, Police Inspector, Sola police station, said that the wall appeared to have collapsed primarily due to rain. He will also participate in the Rashtriya Ekta Divas Parade. The inauguration programme will most likely be the last item on the PM's agenda on Saturday. He will take off from the Kevadiya Jetty built on lake number 3 near the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The sea plane will arrive at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. From there, the PM is likely to return to Delhi. The seaplane services will be started by the aviation company, SpiceJet. The services will be provided incentives and benefits under the central government's 'Udaan' scheme. The scheme is being implemented as per a tripartite agreement between the Gujarat government, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). For the maiden flight, the company has procured a Twin Otter 300 seaplane, which has arrived at Kevadiya SoU jetty. Infrastructural facilities such as a floating jetty are ready at both the places of landing and takeoff at lake number 3 at Kevadiya and at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. Before that the PM will take part in the National Unity Parade. At 182 meters, it’s even twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. That means if you’re standing anywhere within the radius of 7 kms, you’ll be able to see the statue towering down on you. And, the best part is it’s not just something to stare at. You can actually go inside the statue and climb up the viewing gallery at 153 meters. Since the statue has been constructed on the Sadhu Bet Island on the Narmada River, visitors can see the Sardar Sarovar Dam laid out in front of them from there. The government said that it took over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel and 6,000 tonnes of structural steel to put the statue together. Even the outer layer of statue required over 1,700 tonnes of bronze. The Statue of Unity has been built as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was key to unitiing the princely states after the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. It’s more than just the statue During the unveiling of the Statue of Unity, more tourist locations were also introduced in and around the location. First off, there’s a 17 kms long valley of flowers in the vicinity. Second, and more importantly, there’s a ‘Tent City’ around the statue where visitors can stay. While the launch of the statue was a big event, one can’t help but wonder if this tourism attraction is going to bring in competition for Gujarat’s most popular winter festival that’s famously known for its tent city, the Rann Utsav. The government’s even come out and said it expects 15,000 tourist visitors on a daily basis. Shanghai Cooperation Organization Includes India’s Statue of Unity In the ‘List of Eight Wonders of SCO’. Each of the attractions we find in the list has its own unique set of characteristics. This year, India invited all the members of the SCO including Pakistan for the annual meeting of the central Asian group. The group has eight member states and four observer states as a part of the group. Here are the compelling features of the 8 Wonders of SCO. Statue Of Unity The Statue of Unity is today the tallest statue in the world towering over a height of 182 meters. Inaugurated on the 143 birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the monument is a tribute to the first Home Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of India. Built within 33 months using 90,000 tonnes of cement and 25,000 tonnes of iron, the statue is ably engineered to withstand any harsh acts of nature. It is ideally located on an island called Sadhu Bet in the vicinity of Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River in Gujarat. The statue comprises five zones and three of them are accessible to the public. The interesting components of the statue include a memorial garden, museum, and an audio-visual gallery. The statue and the surroundings span over an area of about 4.9 acres surrounded by a picturesque lake that was created artificially. Daming Palace In China The Daming Palace is designated as the National Heritage Site of China. This is an imperial palace complex that belonged to the Tang Dynasty and is situated in the capital Chang’an. For over two centuries, this place was the imperial residence of the Tang Emperors. The highlights of the palace include the Three Great Halls namely the Hanyuan Hall, the Xuanzheng Hall, and the Zichen Hall. It has a gate known as Danfeng Gate at the central southern entrance. This is a massive gate comprising five doorways. A series of excavations and conservative works at the palace location followed after the site of the Daming Palace was discovered in 1957. The Daming Palace National Heritage Park was opened to the public on 1 October 2010. In the site of the palace complex, there are a number of exhibition halls that display the cultural relics excavated at the site. Navruz Palace In Tajikistan Located in the Ismail Somoni Avenue near the Varzob River that runs across the town, the Navruz Palace is one of the top attractions of Tajikistan. Initially constructed to accommodate a conference of leaders, this palace is now rented out. The four main halls of the facility include Guliston, Didor, Zarandud and Arzhang. Navruz palace also has a cinema hall, shopping mall and a nightclub. Lovers of architecture will find this place a great site to admire and relax. Also called as the Kohi Navruz, the idea behind this palace was conceived to make it the national tea house in the Central Asia region. In the course of time, it also ended up as the museum of national handicrafts of Tajikistan. Spanning over four hectares, the palace includes summer pavilions, fountains, art gallery, bowling, billiard, 3D, teahouse, and gardens. It is said about four thousand craftsmen from all over Tajikistan were involved in decorating the palace. Mughal Heritage In Pakistan The heritage places of the Mughal period in Pakistan is one among the impressive members of the Eight Wonders of SCO. The two distinguished royal complexes we find in Pakistan belonging to the Mughal period are the Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore. The fort is located near the Northwest corner of the Lahore walled city. It contains about 21 monuments which date back to the times of Akbar. This fort was destroyed and re-built many times in history. A typical example of Mughal Gardens, the Shalamar Garden was created by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1642. The 16 hectare garden featuring Persian and Islamic architecture. Tamgaly Gorge In Kazakhstan One of the most visited heritage places in Kazakhstan, Tamgaly Gorge is a highly unique spot of ancient rock carvings. These are among the oldest monuments of the land identified as petroglyphs. The most striking place of Semirechye, there are around 5000 drawings in this place including the images of gods, soldiers, married couples, and scenes of animal sacrifice and hunting. A greater part of these drawings are attributed to the Bronze Age. This place also houses a large number of ancient graves. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Po-I-Kalan Complex In Uzbekistan Uzbekistan’s Poi Kalan architectural complex is located in the center of Bukhara. The most impressive feature of this monument is the Kalan Minaret which towers to a height of 50 meters visible from any place in Bukhara. Arabs started constructing this site in 713 when they visited here to spread Islam. Though the complex has been destroyed and built several times, the minaret has outlived Mongol invaders, fires and earthquakes. The minaret’s diameter is 9 meters at the base and 6 meters at the top. The spiral staircase with 104 steps has been polished by the feet of millions of people who have visited it so far. In the past, criminals and unfaithful wives were executed on the site. The Golden Ring cities of Russia Created during the Soviet era, Russia’s Golden Ring is a tourist route that was intended to boost the number of foreign tourists visiting the country. Today, we see the Golden Ring popularly used by visitors as well as the domestic travelers of Russia. The eight main cities that make up the Golden Ring include Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, and Rostov Veliky. The Golden Ring boasts of picturesque churches, golden domes and many other places of interest both ancient and modern. Kyrgyzstan — Lake Issyk-Kul Deemed as the seventh deepest lake and the tenth largest lake of the world in terms of volume, Issyk-Kul is located in the northern Tian Shan Mountains in the eastern Kyrgyztan. The term Issy-Kul means a warm lake. Though the lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, its waters never freeze. Forming part of the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve, the Issyk-Kul Lake is known for its amazing bio-diversity. The total area of the lake is 6,236 square kilometers. Located at an altitude of 1,607 meters above the sea level, the lake reaches a depth of 668 meters. Around 118 rivers and streams flow into this second largest mountain lake of the world.
