Netflix has an alternate plan for you to celebrate Valentine’s Day

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Netlfix's new zombie comedy, "Santa Clarita Diet," really benefits from binge-watching.<p>I say that because the premiere episode is not good. If the show, which premieres on Friday, were on some kind of weekly schedule, I wouldn't be back for for the second episode. Thankfully for "Santa Clarita Diet," Netflix is about binge-watching and there's a marked improvement from the first episode to the second, which are both directed&#xa0;by&#xa0;<span>Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"),</span>&#xa0;and that may hook viewers. Smartly, Netflix sent critics the entire first season of 10 episodes to review.</p><p>Created by Victor Fresco ("Better Off Ted"), "Santa Clarita Diet" stars Drew Barrymore, who is also an executive producer, as suburban wife and mom Sheila; Timothy Olyphant as her husband Joel; and Liv Hewson as their teen daughter Abby. They live in the cookie-cutter city of Santa Clarita, a suburb about an hour north of Los Angeles for those who want to escape the urban jungle and raise their family.</p><p>Reserved and skittish when we first meet her, Sheila&#xa0;begins to feel ill. As her illness escalates, so does her impulse to act on her raw desires. She's diagnosed as undead by the geeky boy across the street, Eric (endearingly played by Skyer Gisondo). Sheila pulls&#xa0;her family into the spiral of finding ways to satiate her hunger for human&#xa0;flesh while upholding the appearance of normalcy that defines Santa Clarita.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The problems with the first episode include a search for the right balance between a gory zombie show and family comedy. Barrymore and Olyphant don't help matters. She seems a little too flippant about her zombie transformation and Olyphant, a veteran of dramas like "Deadwood," is way too intense in moments.<p>Plus, if we're to make the connection between being undead and the monotony of suburban life, then we need to get a better feel for that life. Are they unhappy with their marriage? Is the sex bad? Will Sheila&#xa0;lose it after one more PTA bake sale? How bad are their jobs as real-estate agents? The opening episode has to establish Sheila's malady (in a whole lot of disgusting ways) so quickly that we don't really get a sense of any of that.</p><p>Things begin to fall into place on the episodes that follow as Barrymore and Olyphant sink into their roles. She gets to play to her goofy and irreverent side and Olyphant's inclination for severity&#xa0;begins to fit the situation better. That's not to say that the show's problems get ironed out, but there's great improvement.</p><p>Through it all, Hewson as daughter Abby is a pretty solid player and makes the most sense in the context of the show. Like a teen who decides nothing really matters when there's trouble at home, Abby begins to withdraw from school and follow her wilder side.</p><p>Fans of the zombie-comedy genre&#xa0;will enjoy the show's more gory and disgusting elements. Sheila vomits... a lot, tears into people with her teeth, and does things like point to part of a man's severed arm and say, "This is the filet mignon for humans." The show is vague about what exactly&#xa0;caused Sheila's transformation, so zombie aficionados may enjoy theorizing about that.</p><p>In the end,&#xa0;"Santa Clarita" is both a zombie show and a comment on suburban life, though it never quite nails either tone. Netflix's new Drew Barrymore zombie show 'Santa Clarita Diet' is a gory, disgusting mess

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Netflix was forced to take down a Germany-wide billboard&#xa0;campaign that featured a dismembered finger and aimed to promote its new series "Santa Clarita Diet", &#xa0;after the public complained&#xa0;it was "disgusting,"&#xa0;<a href="http://www.tagesspiegel.de/medien/beschwerden-wegen-netflix-werbung-eine-currywurst-macht-angst/19418700.html">the Berliner Tagesspiegel reported on Monday.</a><p>The ad campaign depicted a cut up finger sprinkled with curry, in the style of a German currywurst dish.</p><p>The streaming service even set up currywurst stands around Berlin to promote the new series, which stars Drew Barrymore as a flesh-eating zombie.</p><p>The Deutscher Werberat, the German <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> regulator, received more 50 complaints about the campaign. As is standard procedure, the Werberat made Netflix aware of the complaints. It's especially common in women over 40. As many as <a href="https://www.menopause.org/for-women/menopause-faqs-hot-flashes#:~:text=As%20many%20as%2075%25%20of,seek%20relief%20from%20their%20clinicians." target="_blank" rel="noopener">75% </a>of women around <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/how-to-stop-hot-flashes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">menopausal</a> age experience them.</p><p>"For the first time, I think I'm having my first hot flash," she repeated as she took off her blazer and fanned herself. "Whoa!"</p><p>"Oh, I feel so honored," Aniston joked as she helped unclip Barrymore's microphone from her blazer to her blouse.</p><p>"I'm so sorry, do you feel this?" The series pays homage to Romero's zombies whilst also highlighting how much they have changed by making its zombies more grotesque.</p><h2><strong>Zombies originate from Haitian folklore</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Night of the Living Dead" height="900" width="1200" msid="87963529" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.history.com/topics/folklore/history-of-zombies#:~:text=Origin%20of%20Zombies,-The%20Ancient%20Greeks&amp;text=Zombie%20folklore%20has%20been%20around,the%20slaves%20longing%20for%20freedom.">The History Channel website reports</a> that zombies originate from Haitian folklore and are believed to be reanimated as mindless soulless creatures and controlled by a voodoo sorcerer called a Bokor.</p><p>After being brought to the West, early zombie movies continued this myth including "White Zombie," which is regarded as the first-ever zombie movie. This changed with "Night of the Living Dead," directed by George Romero, the start of the transformation of zombies on-screen.</p><p>With Romero's 1968 movie and its sequels, the zombies had no controller or agenda except for a need to consume human flesh. Romero was the first to make every dead person part of the undead rather than a specific few and created key zombie traits such as zombie's iconic awkward shambling walking.</p><p>There are some traits that Romero can't take credit for such as brain-eating, which was introduced in the horror-comedy "The Return of the Living Dead" in 1985.</p><h2><strong>Early 21st-century zombie movies started to develop ideas of a zombie virus and started having fast-moving zombies</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Resident Evil" height="664" width="885" msid="87963532" hostid="261"></div><strong><br /></strong><p>In Romero's movies, people would turn into zombies regardless of whether they were bitten or not. However, the idea of a zombie virus, which started with 1992's "Dead Alive," is now a more common explanation for how the undead exist and expand their numbers.</p><p>This idea, along with fast-moving zombies, became popular after the success of "Resident Evil" and "The House of the Dead" revitalized interest in the undead in the late 20th century. Andrew Garland, the writer behind "28 days later" credited "Resident Evil" specifically as reviving the zombie genre after its release in 1996.</p><p>"Sometimes '28 Days Later' is credited with reviving the zombie genre in some respect, but actually, I think it was 'Resident Evil' that did it because I remember playing 'Resident Evil,' having not really encountered zombies for quite a while and thinking: 'Oh, my God, I love zombies! I'd forgotten how much I love zombies. These are awesome!'" Garland <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/interview-director-alex-g_b_7038618">told the Huffington Post in 2015.</a></p><p>The movie adaptation of "Resident Evil" in the early 2000s, followed shortly by box-office hits "28 Days Later" and <keyword id="12575606" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="zack-snyder" source="Orion">Zack Snyder</keyword>'s "Dawn of the Dead" remake, cemented the zombie virus and running zombies in popular culture. "<keyword id="11911240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-walking-dead" source="Orion">The Walking Dead</keyword>" is one of the few exceptions of recent zombie stories that keep the zombies slow.</p><h2><strong>Zombies have changed in the way they look as well as the way they act in movies and TV</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Day of the Dead" height="664" width="885" msid="87963534" hostid="261"></div><p>Although zombies' change in looks in movies largely has to do with the technology and materials available for makeup and practical effects, there are vast differences between <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-zombies-evolution-before-after-2015-11">monster-like zombies as seen in "The Walking Dead"</a> and human-like zombies as seen in "Train to Busan."</p><p>Todd Masters, an Emmy award-winning makeup effects artist who worked on the latest "Day of the Dead" Syfy series, told Insider that whilst make-up teams are trained to be able to do different types of zombies, they are not usually given the budget to do so.</p><p>"['The <keyword id="12625503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="walking-dead" source="Orion">Walking Dead</keyword>' makeup team] really put a lot of time and effort into [zombies] because they have the time and the budget. We did not, and so it kinda pulled us away from that look," Masters said about creating the look for the zombies in "Day of the Dead." "We were really looking to like Italian zombie movies. It's kind of not designed. They're messy, and they're drippy and there's fizzy shit going on."</p><h2><strong>21st-century zombie stories have started a trend of mixing other genres with the zombie trope</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Santa Clarita Diet" height="2044" width="2726" msid="87963537" hostid="261"></div><p>The 21st century's evolution of zombies was less to do with how zombies act. Instead, zombies are being brought into other genres such as <a href="https://screenrant.com/best-zombie-comedies-rotten-tomatoes/">zombie comedies</a>, which started in 1985 with "The Return of the Living Dead," and zombie love stories, which started with 1993's "My Boyfriend's Back." This has been seen in notable zombie movies in the last 20 years like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Warm Bodies."</p><p>TV series such as "iZOMBIE" and "Santa Clarita Diet" took this one step further by humanizing their zombies, making zombies the protagonist fighting the urge to become monsters.</p><p>This all comes together with "<keyword id="12264528" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="army-of-the-dead" source="Orion">Army of the Dead</keyword>," <a href="https://deadline.com/feature/most-watched-netflix-shows-movies-1234846488/">which is in the top 10 of Netflix's most-watched original movies ever</a> and has the most advanced zombies ever. "Army of the Dead" not only mixes the heist genre with zombies but also makes their zombies communicate with each other almost like an animal pack.</p><div type="image" title="the walking dead season 11 walkers" height="2000" width="2666" msid="87963540" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/how-army-of-the-dead-went-from-warner-bros-to-netflix-2021-5">Zack Snyder, who directed the movie, told Insider</a> that he particularly wanted to make his zombies "sympathetic." </p><p>"I liked this idea that the zombies aren't just killing us, they're here to replace us in some way ... like eventually there could just be a planet of the dead," Snyder said.</p><p>It seems that the next stage in evolution is making the undead human again, a trend that has been seen with every other iconic monster from aliens to vampires.</p>

In the role, Barrymore <span>vomits... a lot, tears into people with her teeth, and eats newly killed animals and human flesh.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Barrymore said she came to the role quite hungry, because she was on a diet for the job.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"I was so hungry when we started," she told reporters at a Netflix event on Wednesday. "I was trying to lose 20 pounds, that was my goal. I was 144 when we started and I ended up at 124. In order to do that, you have to eat really sensibly. Listen, she was eating humans. And if you're on an all-protein diet, you would thin out. There's just no question about it. So it gave me a goal line that I committed to."</span></span></p><p><span><span>But Barrymore said that the actual things she had to eat for "Santa Clarita Diet" were almost as gross as what viewers see on the show.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"It was always different stuff," she said. "Some days it was dehydrated apples made to look fleshy. Some days, it was this weird edible rubber that tasted like Jolly Rancher. Sometimes it was like a wet cake to be a fake piece of chicken. Sometimes, it was like a soup that had gone bad to portray vomit, that had actually curdled. It was always a fun cornucopia. Every day was interesting."</span></span></p><p><span><span>Of all that, the 41-year-old actress said there was one fake food that surprised her when it made her sick.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"The raw beef, that one almost made me yak in the sink," Barrymore said. "It had a cream and it curdled. It was fake raw meat. It didn't taste very good. Weirdly, of all the things, the raw meat was one that got me. Romero's "Land of the Dead" (2005), "Suicide Squad" (2016), and "Ocean 11" (2001) along with fantasy TV show, "Game of Thrones."</p><p>Snyder, acting as writer, producer, and cinematographer, in addition to director, here, delivers a grounded and, at times, hilarious zombie film that imagines how the United States would actually try to deal with a zombie apocalypse if it occurred. </p><p>"Army" follows a group of mercenaries who, more or less, go on a suicide mission to Las Vegas, where the zombie population has been quarantined from the rest of the US. The group, led by Dave Bautista's Scott Ward, is hired to retrieve $200 million from a casino vault.</p><div type="image" title="army of the dead dave bautista" height="1582" width="3000" msid="82550403" hostid="261"></div><p>The problem? They must try and get past a zombie overlord, his queen, and their horde of the undead undetected. The other problem is that Vegas is set to get nuked in 32 hours to rid of the zombie problem.</p><p>Despite a few uncomfortable minutes at the film's start in which you learn how the zombie apocalypse comes to pass, overall, "Army" is a compelling twist on the genre and a gamble by Netflix, which, if it pays off, will give the streaming service a huge original zombie universe. </p><p>For those who have been dismayed or disheartened by the lack of big deaths on "The Walking Dead" or other zombie shows or films over the years, Snyder delivers and gives you what you've always wanted in a number of unexpected, "holy sh--" deaths.</p><p>If you want to watch a person get torn apart by a zombie tiger, this is the movie for you.</p><h2>It's not all guts, gore, and horror. Snyder's zombies are smarter. By the film's end, you may even be #TeamZombie.</h2><div type="image" title="army of the dead zeus zombie king " height="2112" width="4004" msid="82550405" hostid="261"></div><p>I write about zombies <a href="https://insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">a lot</a>. In film and TV, you <a href="https://io9.gizmodo.com/12-zombie-movies-that-root-for-the-zombies-5943647">rarely care</a> for the mindless monsters that tear apart the living. Usually, the dead are immensely predictable. They decay. They bite. They jump scare. They're dangerous in herds. Rinse and repeat. That's the cycle. </p><p>In the zombie genre, you're usually rooting for the living (even if the people aren't worth saving) as they try and outwit, outlast, and survive the dead. The same rings true here, to an extent. But, in "Army," Snyder makes the viewer conflicted as they begin to care for some of the undead.</p><p>Patient zero, Zeus (Richard Cetrone), escapes during a transport from Area 51, the highly classified United States Air Force facility in Nevada, at the film's start and is the zombie king of Snyder's undead army.</p><p>Why is the government holding onto a zombie? Was this guy a genetically-engineered zombie? Both are great questions which, according to the film's production notes, will be explored more in Snyder's extended zombie-verse.</p><div type="image" title="zeus zombie king zombie herd army of the dead" height="966" width="1712" msid="82550408" hostid="261"></div>If you're bit by Zeus, a beefy-looking, snarling zaddy who dons a cape (as all zombie kings should), you become an Alpha, a smarter and faster breed of zombie. If you're bit by anyone who isn't Zeus, you become one of the slower and mindless members of the undead, a Shambler. <p>If the hierarchy sounds familiar, it's a bit <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-thrones-white-walkers-wights-skeletons-difference-2017-8">reminiscent of the Night King's army</a> on "Game of Thrones," except a bit more satisfying.</p><p>Were you among those left disappointed by the Night King's <a href="https://www.quora.com/Why-did-the-Night-Kings-death-in-Game-of-Thrones-feel-very-anti-climactic">quick</a>, <a href="https://theweek.com/articles/838179/game-thrones-blew">anticlimactic death</a> without learning the villain's motivations? In "Army," Snyder gives us a worthy zombie king who throws down with the humans and has a devoted, menacing cult following. </p><p>Here, it feels like Snyder is carrying on the work of Romero's "Land of the Dead," in which a sentient zombie, dubbed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KByxGMoiO4">"Big Daddy,"</a> rallies together other zombies to seek justice for the undead. By the film's end, Snyder may convince you to sympathize with Zeus or even become #TeamZombie. </p><h2><strong>Tig Notaro is a scene-stealer.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="army of the dead tig notaro" height="2000" width="3000" msid="82550409" hostid="261"></div><p>Aside from the compelling zombie king (and his <a href="https://i.insider.com/609a313cba78eb001906e8b8">fabulous queen</a>) who are sure to inspire cosplay, Snyder delivers a whole roster of characters to fall in love with or vehemently hate.</p><p>Tig Notaro (who replaced Chris D'Elia after he <a href="https://ew.com/movies/tig-notaro-replacing-chris-delia-in-army-of-the-dead-zack-snyder/">was accused of sexual misconduct</a> by multiple women) is inspired casting here.</p><p>Notaro already has <a href="https://www.themarysue.com/replace-terrible-men-movies-tig-notaro/">fans from her scene-stealing appearance</a> in the film's trailer. That's not a fluke. Her devil-may-care pilot steals every scene she's in with dry wit and humor. (Not bad for someone who was working with <a href="https://ew.com/movies/tig-notaro-army-of-the-dead/">a green screen most of the time only to be inserted into the finished film later</a>.)</p><div type="image" title="army of the dead omari hardwick dieter matthias schweighofer" height="2000" width="3000" msid="82550411" hostid="261"></div>In addition to Notaro, "Fear TWD" fans who <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-fear-twd-killed-john-dorie-2021-4">miss Garret Dillahunt on the "TWD" spinoff</a> will be happy to see him here. However, instead of the conflicted protagonist he played on "Fear," Dillahunt plays a character fans will love to hate. <p>An unlikely bromance between the skittish yet brilliant Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) and no-nonsense zombie-killing machine Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) will win fans over.</p><p>The only character who could have used a more fleshed-out story arc was Huma Qureshi's Geeta, a mother held captive by Zeus.</p><h2><strong>Netflix appears to have beaten WB to the punch by making a good 'Suicide Squad'-esque film with 'Army.' </strong></h2><div type="image" title="army of the dead cast open vault" height="2040" width="3000" msid="82550415" hostid="261"></div><p>"Army" is certainly "Ocean's 11" meets zombies, but I wasn't expecting it to also feel reminiscent of DC's "Suicide Squad" comic series.</p><p>In 2021's upcoming live action "The Suicide Squad," any character is expendable. One of the film's taglines is, "Don't get too attached," suggesting any character could potentially meet a grim fate regardless of their prominence.</p><p>Without giving much away plot wise, the same phrase could be used to describe Snyder's "Army of the Dead." "Army" uses the marketing phrase, "Always bet on dead." (It's an apt description.)</p><div type="image" title="army of the dead the suicide squad" height="900" width="1200" msid="82550416" hostid="261"></div><p>The comparison is more interesting when you know Bautista was offered a role in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad." As much as he wanted to do "TSS" (he's been a staunch supporter of Gunn), he <a href="https://www.insider.com/dave-bautista-suicide-squad-army-of-the-dead-netflix-money-2021-5">turned it down for a better payday in Netflix's "Army"</a> and the opportunity to work with Snyder.</p><p>Bautista's bet paid off as he not only gets to be in a "Suicide Squad"-style movie while getting paid more to do so, but he is also the heart of "Army" as the squad's leader.</p><p>WB, the studio behind "Suicide Squad," could have released a version of "Army" years ago, but couldn't make it work creatively. WB's loss is Netflix's gain.</p><h2><strong>"Army" is a huge win for Netflix. </strong></h2><div type="image" title="army of the dead casino floor" height="1582" width="3000" msid="82550421" hostid="261"></div><p>Will you be left with a bunch of questions after watching "Army"? Absolutely. That's the point. </p><p>Netflix isn't planning for "Army" to be a one-off. They're all-in on Snyder's zombie-verse.</p><p>A prequel movie, "Army of Thieves," <a href="https://twitter.com/ZackSnyder/status/1341441281541562370">has already been filmed</a>. And an anime-style TV series, "<a href="https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/netflix-anime-prequel-army-of-the-dead-lost-vegas-everything-we-know-so-far/">Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas</a>," will reunite the film's cast while introducing Joe Manganiello and Vanessa Hudgens into the mix. </p><p>And from what Snyder recently told me, he and "Army" co-writer Shay Hatten have already figured out where a sequel (or <em>sequels</em>) could go if needed. That's not a surprise from how "Army" ends.</p><p>If it takes off, I suspect "Army" will be Netflix's answer to "The Walking Dead" universe. AMC's hit series has streamed on Netflix in its entirety for years, making it easily accessible, and <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/news/the-most-watched-shows-on-netflix-this-week">has consistently</a> remained <a href="https://undeadwalking.com/2019/08/24/walking-dead-popular-shows-netflix/">one of the streamer's more popular shows</a>. </p><p>In recent years, Netflix has dabbled in its own original zombie content, trying to find a hit in canceled shows like "<a href="https://ew.com/tv/2019/12/17/netflix-daybreak-canceled/">Daybreak</a>" and "<a href="https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a27341559/santa-clarita-diet-cancelled-why-netflix/">Santa Clarita Diet</a>." Currently, the streamer has original series "Black Summer" and "Sweet Home," which also feature zombie apocalypses.</p><p>For Netflix, Snyder's passion project was likely exactly what it was looking for - a way to tap into the genre with a big name, passionate fanbase, and, lucky for them, someone who is at home in the genre.</p><p>Honestly, after a decade of "TWD" and <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-world-beyond-nico-tortorella-knows-rick-grimes-location">wondering</a> where <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-why-rick-left-show-on-helicopter-2018-11">Rick Grimes flew off to in a helicopter</a> in 2018, I'm ready for a new breed of zombies. </p><p>I'll be with "TWD" <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-will-the-walking-dead-end-final-season">until the end</a>, but, meanwhile, I'm jumping out of the chopper and getting lost in Vegas.</p><p><em>"Army of the Dead" will be released in select theaters on May 14 and will be available to stream on Netflix, starting May 21.</em></p>

Zack Snyder's first zombie movie in 17 years, 'Army of the Dead,' may have you rooting for the undead by its end

Here's everything coming to Netflix in February that's worth watching

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="952399" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Walking-Dead">The Walking Dead</keyword>" will end its <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> run in 2022 with season 11.</li><li>The final season will consist of 24 episodes. </li><li>"The Walking Dead" Universe will move forward with a Carol and Daryl-led show as well as an anthology series.</li><li>"This show changed my life and career and everyone involved has truly been a family for me over the last decade," Norman Reedus said in a statement provided to Insider.</li></ul><p>"<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">The Walking Dead</a>" will end its run on TV in 2022. </p><p>Wednesday, <keyword id="6358378" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="amc">AMC</keyword> announced the zombie drama's 11th season <a href="https://bit.ly/TWD_FinalSeason">will be its last</a>. AMC will deliver an extended 24-episode season that's expected to run from 2021 through late 2022.</p><p>It's the first time since the show's 2010 premiere that it will not debut a new season in October. In July, showrunner Angela Kang confirmed season 11 would not premiere this fall <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-will-the-walking-dead-season-10-finale-air">due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic</a>. </p><p>The series, which started as one man's journey of survival with his family and grew to be a show about group survival during the apocalypse, ushered in an era of zombie-related series ranging from "Z Nation" and "iZombie" to "Santa Clarita Diet."</p><p>Though "TWD" began to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/walking-dead-ratings-have-plummeted-past-2-seasons-1154521#:~:text=From%20season%20seven%20to%20now,11.35%20million%20to%205.35%20million).">decline in ratings</a> after fan <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/entertainthis/2016/10/24/walking-dead-season-7-premiere-fan-reaction/92669814/">backlash to the season seven premiere</a>, recent showrunner Angela Kang did the impossible by turning the show's quality around even as main star, Andrew Lincoln, departed the show. Seasons nine and 10 are, arguably, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-season-10b-review-2020-2">some of its best</a>.</p><p>"The Walking Dead" isn't completely leaving. AMC announced fan-favorite characters Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) will <a href="https://bit.ly/CarolDarylTWDshow">lead a new spinoff series</a> that's currently planned to premiere in 2023. The network is also developing an anthology series, which will follow a range of past, present, and new cast.</p><p>"The Walking Dead" cast and crew shared their reactions as the flagship show comes to an end and "TWD" universe ventures into new territory.</p><h2><strong>Norman Reedus says the show changed his life</strong></h2><div type="image" title="twd 1008 norman reedus daryl" height="1666" width="2500" msid="78023352" hostid="261"></div><p>"I feel incredibly honored to be a part of 'The Walking Dead.' This show changed my life and career and everyone involved has truly been a family for me over the last decade," said Reedus in a statement provided to Insider.</p><p>Reedus joined the series as Daryl Dixon, a character who doesn't exist in Robert Kirkman's comic book of the same name. <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/norman-reedus-walking-dead">In a 2014 interview with GQ</a>, Reedus said he read lines for the show after it was already completely cast. He just hoped for a way onto the show.</p><p>A decade later, Dixon's journey from a redneck loner to a compassionate and loyal leader helped him become a fan favorite, and, now, star of the show. Fans rallied behind the character so much that the mantra "If Daryl dies, we riot," became a passionate catchphrase.</p><p>"I'm thankful for AMC's love and support and know there's so much more story to tell and so much more to bring the best fans in the world," he continued. "Daryl's relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show (sorry Rick). I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can't wait to see where their ride goes from here." </p><h2><strong>Showrunner Angela Kang says it's bittersweet to say goodbye to the show that's been a part of her life for a decade, but she's ready for the next chapter</strong></h2><p>"I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast, and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman's story to life for our fans over the next two years," said Kang in a statement.</p><div type="image" title="angela kang twd nycc 2019" height="1992" width="3000" msid="78023355" hostid="261"></div><p>Kang was a writer and story editor on the show since season two before getting promoted to showrunner on the series' ninth season. There aren't many female showrunners and Kang was handed the keys to one of the biggest shows on TV at a pivotal point when two stars, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-will-carl-die-2018-2">Chandler Riggs</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/andrew-lincoln-will-leave-walking-dead-season-9-2018-7">Andrew Lincoln</a>, were out the door.</p><p>Initially, fans and critics (<a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-season-9-review-2018-9">ourselves included</a>) <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2018/05/29/can-the-walking-dead-survive-without-rick-grimes/#3ff2260839a8">were skeptical</a> whether or not the show could carry on without Rick Grimes. Not only could it move forward, but Kang showed the series still had legs by refocusing the show on its ensemble cast while <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-dante-whisperer-siddiq-2019-11">keeping fans on their toes with unexpected twists</a>. </p><p>In her first episode as showrunner, she <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-season-9-premiere-death-2018-10">quickly killed off a character</a> who overstayed his welcome and pulled the trigger on a massive multi-character death from the comics an episode before many thought it would occur. When Insider asked Kang why the moment didn't come during the season nine finale, Kang said it <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-walking-dead-pike-deaths-were-not-on-finale-2019-3">was the original plan, but she didn't want to drag out the show</a> with, what sounded like, a filler episode. She wanted to keep the story moving. </p><p>"'The Walking Dead' flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it's bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol," said Kang of what's next. "Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I'm thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together."</p><h2><strong>Melissa McBride is ready for the Carol and Daryl show</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="twd 1000 daryl carol " height="1666" width="2500" msid="78023359" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>McBride plays fan-favorite Carol Peletier, who long outlived her character's comic death. </p><p>When asked by Insider about the decision to keep Carol's character on the series, chief content officer of "TWD" Universe, Scott Gimple, said he <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-carol-almost-killed-season-3-2019-4">fought to keep her on the series when there was a conversation about killing her off</a>.</p><p>Gimple saw the potential in showing a woman who came from abuse become the story's hero. It's a role that has meant a lot to McBride to play.</p><p>"I've always enjoyed working so closely with Norman throughout these many seasons," said McBride in a statement. "In playing Carol, and as a viewer of the show, I've also long been intrigued with 'Daryl and Carol,' and by what so early on between them, even then, felt somehow bound."</p><p>McBride continued: "Their shared history is long, and each's own personal fight to survive, even longer – the more obvious aspect of what has kept them close and loyal. But there is also a rather mysterious aspect to their fondness for one another that I enjoy, and their playfulness when the world permits. I'm very curious! Angela has a way of shaking things up in great and unexpected ways. She's like a kid playing with the dimmer switch! I'm very excited!" </p><h2><strong>Gimple teases this isn't goodbye, it's just time to ring in a new era of 'TWD'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="twd 708 scott gimple" height="1325" width="2000" msid="78023362" hostid="261"></div><p>"It's been ten years 'gone bye;' what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that," said Gimple, referencing the pilot episode of "TWD," "Days Gone Bye."</p><p>"What's clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world," Gimple continued. "We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on 'TWD,' and then, this end will be a beginning of more 'Walking Dead' — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us.
