<ul><li><keyword id="44863" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HUL">HUL</keyword>'s Q1 standalone net profit for the quarter ended June 30 saw a 9.5% jump at Rs 2,061 crore. </li><li>Its advertising and promotions spends stood at Rs 1,024 crore from Rs 797 crore for the same quarter last year.</li></ul><keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> major <keyword id="6365619" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL) spent Rs 1,024 crore on advertising and promotions in the quarter ending June 30, a substantial increase from Rs 797 crore in the same quarter last year, according to its standalone results for the quarter. Despite the impact of the challenging second wave of COVID-19 in the country, HUL's <keyword id="6615026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-consumer">Domestic Consumer</keyword> segment witnessed a growth of 12%, Underlying Volume Growth of 9% and Profit after tax growth of 10%. "Performance was broad based with all 3 divisions growing competitively and in double-digits. Our business fundamentals remain strong with a large part of our business gaining penetration," revealed the organization in its quarterly results. Household care continued to perform well growing in high double-digits on a strong base. Liquids and Fabric Sensations continue to outperform benefitting from robust market development initiatives. We have taken calibrated price increase across fabric wash and household care portfolio to partly offset the high inflation in input costs. ‘Surf Excel’ extended its Matic range with the launch of 3 in 1 Smart Shots, a unique three chambers smart technology to provide advanced stain removal, long-lasting fragrance and care for fabrics. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Beauty &amp; Personal Care:" text="Beauty &amp; Personal Care:">Beauty &amp; Personal Care:</cmsannotation> Beauty &amp; Personal Care grew 13% led by Hair Care and Skin Care, both growing in high double-digits. Contextual communications in Hair Care continue to yield good results. Skin Cleansing continued its strong momentum, soaps grew on a high base and premium segment performed well. Hand Hygiene portfolio declined against an exceptionally high base. ‘VWash’ had another strong quarter. A calibrated approach towards price increase has helped protect our business model as vegetable oil prices remain at elevated levels. Color Cosmetics recovered sharply from a weak base in JQ’20 although performance in the quarter was impacted by limited mobility. During this quarter we launched, ‘Pepsodent’ mouthwash that fights Coronavirus, new moisturizing gels and body lotions in ‘Vaseline’ and ‘Lakme Lip Crayons’. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Foods &amp; Refreshment:" text="Foods &amp; Refreshment:">Foods &amp; Refreshment:</cmsannotation> Foods &amp; Refreshment delivered another quarter of strong performance and grew at 12%. All our Tea brands continue to grow in high double-digits despite a very strong base in the prior year. Ketchups and Soups continue to perform well led by strong volume growth on a high base in JQ’20. Go-To-Market integration in Nutrition business is progressing well, Health Food Drinks gained penetration sequentially and grew volumes in mid-single digit. Ice Creams recovered and grew YoY from a weak base, although performance in the quarter was impacted by limited mobility. In partnership with Mondelez International, we have launched ‘Kwality Wall’s Cadbury Crackle’ frozen desert. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Operating margins:" text="Operating margins:">Operating margins:</cmsannotation> EBITDA margins at 24% remain healthy. Profit after tax at Rs. 2,061 Crores increased by 10%. We continue to invest behind our brands and portfolio, and in future-fit capabilities. Our focused actions on net revenue management and savings have enabled us to manage inflationary pressures and deliver a healthy bottom-line performance. Hindustan Unilever spent Rs 1,024 crore on advertising and promotions in the April-June quarter

The Centre on Tuesday again urged the <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> to urgently hear the matter connected with the validity of <keyword id="11939755" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ews" source="Orion">EWS</keyword> quota in postgraduate courses in medical colleges. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, after failing to get the matter listed on Tuesday, requested a bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana to list the matter for hearing. Mehta emphasized that the matter needs to be considered on priority since resident doctors are protesting. The Chief Justice told Mehta that he has to constitute a special bench. Justice Ramana said: "Let me see tomorrow. This entire week is a miscellaneous week..." Mehta said the resident doctors are protesting and their concerns are genuine. The bench said: "If it is a three-judge bench matter, then it will be listed before a three-judge bench tomorrow". On Monday, Mehta asked a bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud to advance the hearing on the matter to Tuesday from January 6. The Centre has told the top court that Rs 8 lakh income criterion for determining the EWS is much more stringent than the one for the OBC creamy layer. The Centre has accepted the report of a three-member panel constituted to revisit the EWS criteria. The panel, in its report, said: "Firstly, the EWS's criteria relates to the financial year prior to the year of application whereas the income criterion for the creamy layer in OBC category is applicable to gross annual income for three consecutive years." The panel added, "Secondly, in case of deciding the OBC creamy layer, income from salaries, agriculture and traditional artisanal professions are excluded from the consideration whereas the Rs 8 lakh criteria for EWS includes that from all sources, including farming. So, despite being the same cut-off number, their composition is different and hence, the two cannot be equated". The panel comprised Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former finance secretary; Prof V.K. Malhotra of ICSSR; and Sanjeev Sanyal, principal economic advisor to the government. The panel was set up on November 30. On November 25, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it has taken a decision to revisit the criteria of Rs 8 lakh annual income limit for EWS criteria and added that a fresh decision will be taken within a period of 4 weeks. On October 21, the Supreme Court had questioned the Centre over adopting the criteria of OBC creamy layer of Rs 8 lakh annual income for granting reservations under the economic weaker section (EWS), despite the latter not suffering from social and educational backwardness. The top court told the Centre's counsel "You just cannot pull out eight lakh from thin air. You are making unequal equal by applying the Rs eight lakh limit". In an affidavit, the Centre had told the Supreme Court that its decision to fix Rs 8 Lakh income limit for OBC and economically weaker section (EWS) is not arbitrary in the <keyword id="6361994" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neet" source="Orion">NEET</keyword> All India Quota, and it was finalised after considering diverse economic factors in different states. The top court is hearing writ petitions challenging 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10 per cent reservation for EWS in all-India Quota seats for postgraduate medical courses. As many as 15 per cent seats in <keyword id="48426" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mbbs" source="Orion">MBBS</keyword> and 50 per cent seats in MS and MD courses are filled through All India Quota from the candidates selected through NEET. Supreme Court agrees to hear Centre's plea on EWS quota for NEET-PG admissions

There are six assembly seats within the Lok Sabha constituency of Thane. The list of them includes Mira Bhayandar, Ovala-Majiwada, Kopri-Pachpakhadi, Thane, Airoli, and Belapur. All of them are general seats and none are reserved. For the upcoming assembly elections for the Vidhan Sabha of Maharashtra, Manda Mhatre will field for BJP from Belapur seat. Sandip Naik will field for BJP from Airoli seat. Shiv Sena is fielding Pratap Sarnaik from the Ovala-Majiwada seat. INC’s Sayyad Muzaffar Hussain will take on BJP’s Narendra Meheta from the Mira Bhayandar constituency. Sanjay Kelkar is the Thane seat contestant for the BJP. As per the announcement made by the Election Commission, all the assembly constituencies of Maharashtra will go for polling on October 21, 2019 and the votes will be counted on October 24, 2019. In the 2019 general elections for the Lok Sabha, the winning candidate who was elected as the MP for this constituency was Vichare Rajan Baburao of SHS. He scored 281,299 votes more than the NCP contestant Sanjeev Ganesh Naik. Fr0om the Mira Bhayandar seat, Narendra Mehta of BJP secured 32292 votes more than the runner up of NCP Gilbert Mendonca and won the seat. Ovala – Majiwada seat was won by SHS contestant Pratap Baburao Sarnaik who scored 10906 votes more than the BJP candidate Sanjay Pandey. Kopri Pachpakhadi winner was SHS candidate Eknath Sambhaji Shinde who overtook the BJP contestant Adv.Sandeep Lele with a margin of 51869. From the Thane seat, Kelkar Sanjay Mukund of BJP took a margin of 12588 votes more than SHS candidate Ravindra Sadanand Phatak and won the seat. The Airoli seat winner was Sandeep Ganesh Naik of NCP who secured 8725 votes more than Chougule Vijay Laxman of SHS. The winner from the Belapur seat Manda Vijay Mhatre of BJP had scored 1419 votes more than the NCP contestant Ganesh Naik.

Post demonetisation, the plastic cards industry, which was facing tough competition from mobile wallets, is now experiencing resurgence as the whole nation is using cards now. 
 Reserve <keyword id="6355303" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-India">Bank of India</keyword> with the finance ministry is now encouraging banks to push their limits on disbursement of debit and credit cards along with terminalisation of merchant outlets to facilitate card transactions, orders are pouring in from all sectors of the industry for fresh sof smart cards. 
 
"We have seen a trebling of demand for plastic smart cards to be used as debit and credit cards and we are also receiving orders from even smaller banks along with the bigger ones as they want to boost their debit card base as well,” said Deven Mehta, managing director, Smart Card IT Solutions, which produces smart cards for banks and telecom companies, told ET. 
 Smaller banks like Allahabad UP <keyword id="83503" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Grameen-Bank">Grameen Bank</keyword>, MP Rajya Sahakari Bank have placed orders for plastic cards. 
 
"Allahabad UP Grameen Bank has asked for 1million cards to be supplied within the next 3 months,” Mehta told ET. 
 
Another section that is driving demand for plastic cards is the prepaid cards industry and that is being driven mostly by prepaid payments instruments (PPI) licence holders who also operate in the mobile wallet space. 
 
Companies such as ItzCash, Oxigen and Transerv are seeing a huge spike in demand for prepaid cards, mostly from corporate entities which want to pay their employees through pre-loaded cards. 
 
"We have received orders to the tune of 30 lakh prepaid cards from many small and medium enterprises to pay salaries to their employees along with individuals who are giving these cards to their family members for their use,” Anish Williams, chief executive officer of Transerv, which operates the Udio mobile wallet, told ET. 
 The demand for plastic card has seen an increased in demand for debit cards over the past two years, driven mainly by the <keyword id="2473706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradhan-Mantri-Jan-Dhan-Yojana">Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana</keyword> which not only mandated bank accounts for every Indian citizen but also tied up with <keyword id="6383340" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Payments-Corporation-of-India">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> for RuPay debit cards for those no-frills accounts. 
 As per RBI data, while the average number of cards being added to the system hovered around the 50-million mark for the years between 2007 and 2014, 2014-15 and 2015-16 saw around 160 million and 111 million cards being added respectively mainly for the <keyword id="2494045" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jan-dhan">Jan Dhan</keyword> accounts. 
 "This surge had made us ramp up production capacity by over 200% over the past two years and hence we are in a position to meet the increased demand for plastc cards in the system,” said Sanjeev Shriya, president of the smart card industry body, <keyword id="3921508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-card-federation-of-india">Smart Card Federation of India</keyword>, told ET.
