<ul class="summary-list"><li>Japan is installing vending machines that unlock in the case of a disaster, per local reports.</li><li>Machines are being trialed that give out free food and supplies in the event of a severe earthquake.</li></ul><p>A Japanese city has installed vending machines that will unlock in the event of earthquakes and other natural disasters, distributing free food and supplies, according to local media.</p><p>The coastal city of Ako, in Hyogo Prefecture, is trialing the scheme with two machines installed at the end of March, <a href="https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20230601/p2a/00m/0na/023000c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Mainichi</a>.</p><p>The machines ordinarily sell snacks and drinks, but can distribute items for free when a major earthquake or typhoon strikes the city.</p><p>As well as containing around 300 bottles of soda and 150 emergency food items, attached lockers also contain emergency sanitary items like portable toilets and masks, the outlet said. </p><p>It added that when an evacuation order is issued due to a level-5 or higher warning on <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/japan-disaster-information/shindo-seismic-intensity/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japan's shindo seismic scale</a>, or for conditions such as heavy rain, the machines will unlock.</p><p>The emergency vending machine scheme is a partnership between the municipality and Tokyo-based pharmaceutical firm Earth Corp., which has research and production facilities in Ako.</p><p>Japan is one of <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/which-country-has-most-earthquakes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the most seismically active countries</a> in the world. Most recently, on May 26 an earthquake of a 6.2 magnitude on the Richter scale struck east of Tokyo, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/earthquake-jolts-eastern-japan-no-tsunami-warning-nhk-2023-05-26/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Reuters</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/why-so-many-vending-machines-in-japan-2017-1">Vending machines are common in Japan</a>, and appear on almost every street selling a wide range of items — some as unusual as <a href="https://www.insider.com/japan-bear-meat-vending-machine-2023-4">bear</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/japanese-company-sell-whale-meat-vending-machines-for-8-dollars-2023-1">whale meat</a>.</p>

Seeded in 2018 during the National Conference for Women in Police, the move aims to create better work conditions for ‘mahila battalions’ in the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force).<br /><br />The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allocated ₹21 million to its ‘gender sensitive’ budget. It aims to install nearly 288 pad vending machines and an equal number of disposal units for sanitary napkins. As many as 8,000 women are a part of India’s <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword>.<br /><br />In fact, the CRPF will also install nearly 800 steel stands for drying clothes, especially for the women personnel.<br /><br />The Home Ministry estimates a cumulative cost of nearly ₹300,000 for each sanitary pad vending machine, disposal unit and drying stand. “The sanction will help the force in ensuring better living and operating conditions for the over 8,000 women personnel who are in combat,” the ministry noted in the official sanction orders.<br /><br />The Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) and CRPF also have plans to introduce women protectors for women in the battalion.<br /><br />Overall, the CRPF has over <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/jul/21/in-a-first-crpf-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-2007290.html">300,000 personnel</a>, including several employed in conflicted or naxal areas of the country such as Jammu and Kashmir.<br /><br />The ministry also said that the same will be used in other Indian forces as well.<br /><br />The idea to create a work environment for women in ‘Khaki’ was originated on the sidelines of a study on the issues of health, privacy and challenges faced by women personnel at workplace. The study was conducted by Renuka Mishra, IPS officer and additional director general (ADG) in Uttar Pradesh.<br /><br />The survey painted a dismal picture of women in police forces and highlighted their struggles to keep up with their jobs. Some of them carry on without drinking water so as to avoid urination as workplaces lack basic necessities. In fact, the women personnel dispose used napkins in a pit.<br /><br />"The women personnel said it was difficult for them to dry their inner wear due to lack of facilities. India sets aside money for 288 sanitary pad vending machines for the 8000 women in paramilitary forces

The boy went on to found PadCare Labs- a startup that develops sustainable sanitary disposal technologies. On the business reality show S<em>hark Tank India Season 2, </em>PadCare bagged a joint deal from four sharks – securing ₹1 crore for 4% equity. <br /><br /><keyword id="544908" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="namita-thapar" source="Orion">Namita Thapar</keyword> (executive director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals),<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/television/shark-tank-india-2-peyush-bansal-floored-by-broomees-founders-video-8415980/"> Peyush Bansal</a> (co-founder, CEO Lenskart), <keyword id="246967" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vineeta-singh" source="Orion">Vineeta Singh</keyword> (co-founder, CEO of Sugar Cosmetics) and <keyword id="127971" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anupam-mittal" source="Orion">Anupam Mittal</keyword> (co-founder of Shaadi.com) were the sharks who invested in the startup. <br /><br />“One sanitary napkin takes 500 to 800 years to decompose and 98% of sanitary napkins go into landfills and water bodies. They are also burnt at 800 degrees with a process called incineration, producing hazardous waste, toxic smell and smoke,” said 26-year-old <keyword id="16342958" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajinkya-dhariya" source="Orion">Ajinkya Dhariya</keyword> on <em>Shark Tank India</em>. <br /><br />Earlier while working for ISRO as an R&amp;D engineer, Dhariya visited a landfill in Pune, and saw rag pickers picking up sanitary waste and diapers with their bare hands. This is how healthtech startup PadCare was born. <br /><br />“A woman spends 5 days a month and approximately five to six years of her life experiencing a menstrual cycle. She consumes over 7,500 sanitary napkins in a lifetime. Our rag pickers pick these up with their bare hands. But in embarrassment, in villages, these are either buried or burned. 1,200 crore sanitary napkins are used every year in India,” Dhariya, who is also the CEO of PadCare. <br /><br />To solve this, Padcare offers three products – PadCare bin (stores hazardous waste for 30 days without bacterial growth or smell), PadCare X (recycles 15,000 sanitary napkins into wood pulp and high quality plastics) and PadCare Vend (a sanitary napkin vending machine). The Padcare bin is also India’s first 5D-technology-based patented sanitary napkin disposal and recycling system, the founder said.<br /><br />“The wood pulp and plastic is sold in the market to paper and packaging industries. These can be converted into creating a PadCare bin as well,” he added. <br /><br /><strong>Scaling Padcare across India</strong><br /><br />With the help of earlier clients State Bank of India and Praj Industries, PadCare installed 3 PadCare bins in the beginning. Today, the company has 150 clients including Facebook, Capgemini and Goldman Sachs and has installed over 5,500 PadCare bins. <br /><br />PadCare is currently present in 6 cities across over 100 organisations and its products are being used by 1 lakh women, conserving 15 metric tons of carbon emissions, as per Dhariya. US, Canada, Singapore and African countries have expressed interest in using PadCare products, he said. <br /><br />The startup was also supported by Tata Trust, Infosys Foundation and additionally received a ₹2.25 crore government grant to develop the PadCare X machine. In FY22, the startup had sales of ₹1.05 crore. <br /><br />Dhariya was part of the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/ajinkya-dhariya/?sh=5851d146717c">Forbes</a> Asia 30 under 30 list under healthcare and science category in 2021. <br /><br />However, the journey to create a sanitary disposal system, especially by a man, is not a common sight and Dhariya faced a lot of ridicule. But his family became his support system. <br /><br />“Sanitary pads were needed everyday for research. I thought I would have to seek the help of my friends. He is my brother so I gave him my pads. Ajinkya is a brother to all the women out there,” Aishwarya Mapara, Dhariya’s sister said. <br /><br />Moved by the social cause Dhariya was tackling, Lenskart’s Bansal offered a blank cheque to Dhariya. <br /><br />“He is the Padman of 2022,” said shark Aman Gupta referring to the Bollywood movie <em>Padman</em> and its lead character played by Akshay Kumar, who resolves to address social stigma associated with menstrual hygiene. ‘Padman of 2022’: Shark Peyush Bansal offers founder of women’s hygiene startup PadCare a blank cheque

Ajmer, the quintessential Rajasthan city, has decided to put hygiene as a top priority in its agenda, for which it has launched the 'Sanitary Napkins Vending Machine', at 'Janana hospital'.<br />

In the coming future, about 70 such machines will be placed at various places including jails, bus stand, polytechnic colleges, schools and other area, thus making Ajmer the first Indian city to have these machines in a huge quantity.<br />
 <br />
"In view of the stigma and social taboo associated with sanitary napkins, majority of the girls/women, feel embarrassed and hesitate to go to the commonly known outlets for sanitary napkins, manned and often crowded by men, resulting in unsafe practices, and use of unhygienic materials during menstrual periods. Thus, vending machine would be a good solution," said District collector Gaurav Goyal.<br />

"We have ordered for 70 such machines in total which would be installed at girl's colleges, schools, Women Polytechnic College, Jail and other parts of the district. More such machines would be installed at Beawar, Kishangarh and Naseerabad areas," Goyal added, thus hinting at his plans to cover the whole district.<br />
 <br />
These machines, manufactured by Hindustan Lifecare Limited (formerly known as Hindustan Latex Limited), a government of India initiative, require the user to insert Rs 10, after which they would get 3 sanitary napkins.<br />
 <br />
Not only this, ‘Sanitary Napkin Incinerators’ are also to be attached with these vending machines to solve the problem of disposal of safe napkins.<br />

As c</span><span>onsumer goods company Georgia Pacific marketing director Dan Nirenberg told the Post, "it's one less thing to buy."</span></span></p><p>The Washington Post notes several other reasons for the decline of the napkin.</p><p>For one, paper towels are more functional than napkins, thanks to their ability to clean up messes of all sizes. They want to bring these remote areas into the digital era and have already initiated such activities in Chhattisgarh, Injiram and Sukma.<br /><br />In July, it had also launched the first mobile phone tower in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. It also enabled internet facilities, and provided computers to students--a move which was well appreciated by its residents.<br /><br />“Padhega Bastar, tabhi toh badhega Bastar (Education in Bastar will lead to development),” Moses Dhinakaran, Directorate General of CRPF tweeted. The Bastar district in Chhattisgarh is prone to Maoist activities. <br /><br />

India’s paramilitary forces organise digital classes in naxal affected areas

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> concluded its massive <keyword id="6359973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="recruitment">recruitment</keyword> drive for Railway Protection Force (RPF).</li><li>It hired over 10,500 personnel — almost half of which — 4,517 — were women. </li><li>It shortlisted 1,120 sub-inspectors, 8,619 constables and 798 ancillary staffers from the recruitment drive, which was started in May 2018.</li><li>The recruitment to these paramilitary forces was based on a computer test for the first time, in order to ensure transparency.</li></ul>India’s largest employer, the Railways is taking steps to reduce the country’s gender gap in the workforce. <br /><br />In its recently concluded recruitment drive for Railway Protection Force (RPF) — which is dedicated to investigate criminal activities, the Railways <a href="https://www.zeebiz.com/india/news-rpf-recruitment-2019-indian-railways-recruits-over-10500-jawans-50-pct-posts-given-to-women-111069">hired over 10,500 personnel</a> — almost half (48%) of which were women. <br /><br />Presently, women constables account for a mere 2.25% of RPF. To change this, Indian Railways reserved 50% of the <keyword id="1062043" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobs-for-women">jobs for women</keyword>. It shortlisted 1,120 sub-inspectors, 8,619 constables and 798 ancillary staffers from the recruitment drive, which was started in May 2018. Of this, 4,517 were women. <br /><br />"For this biggest RPF recruitment drive, we received over 82 lakh applications, including 14.25 lakh for the post of sub-inspectors against 1,120 vacancies, and 59 lakh for the posts of constables. Empowering women, Indian Railways hires over 4,500 women personnel in an aggressive recruitment drive

While only six Chipotle locations have been linked to the outbreak, the company told the Associated Press that all restaurants have been closed "out of an abundance of caution." </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After news of the health scare hit, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chipotle-share-price-november-2-2015-11"><span style="font-weight: 400;">shares at the company</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> fell by as much as 7% in pre-market trading. They're down 3% today.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This isn't the first time the burrito chain known for its fresh products has faced the consequences of major food poisoning outbreaks, with outbreaks of salmonella and norovirus earlier this year. </span></p><p>Here are five times in the last seven years Chipotle has dealt with similar sickening situations, as tracked by the <a href="http://www.foodpoisonjournal.com/foodborne-illness-outbreaks/present-and-past-food-poisoning-problems-at-chipotle/#.Vjd1na6rSi4">Food Poison Journal</a> and the <a href="http://outbreakdatabase.com/search/?outbreak=chipotle">Foodborne Illness Outbreak Database</a>.</p><h3>1. Minnesota, 2015</h3><p>In August, approximately 64 people were sickened after eating <a href="http://www.health.state.mn.us/news/pressrel/2015/salmonella091615.html">tomatoes</a> served at Chipotle locations in Minnesota.</p><p>Twenty two Chipotle locations were linked to the outbreak. Immediately following reports of salmonella, all Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota swapped out the offending tomatoes to those from a different supplier, but did not close.</p><h3>2. California, 2015</h3><p>A single <a href="http://www.foodpoisonjournal.com/foodborne-illness-outbreaks/present-and-past-food-poisoning-problems-at-chipotle/#.Vjd1na6rSi4">Simi Valley, Calif. Chipotle location</a> infected about eighty customers and 17 employees with norovirus on August 18 and 19.</p><p>The location was temporarily closed after customers reported the outbreak. Health inspectors said that the Chipotle in question contained dirty and inoperative equipment, equipment directly connected to the sewer, and other sanitary and health violations.</p><p>While E. coli and salmonella are often linked to supplier issues, norovirus infections are usually connected to <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/about/transmission.html">infected employees</a> preparing food.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mallory Schlossberg/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>3. Six states serving iceberg lettuce, 2009</h3><p>When patients in Colorado, Utah, and New York state all became infected with the same strain of E. coli, the common link was the consumption of <a href="http://outbreakdatabase.com/details/church-brothers-llc-cafe-rio-restaurant-chipotle-restaurant-romaine-lettuce-2009/?outbreak=chipotle">Chipotle's iceberg lettuce</a>.</p><p>A Chipotle lettuce supplier, Church Brothers, LLC, was ultimately found to be responsible for infections in Colorado, Utah, New York, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin in September 2009. A total of 29 customers were infected in the outbreak.</p><h3>4. Ohio, 2008</h3><p>In April 2008, <a href="http://outbreakdatabase.com/details/chipotle-grill-restaurant-burritos-2008/?outbreak=chipotle">more than 500</a> people became ill after eating at a Chipotle location near Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.</p><p>A norovirus outbreak hit the location at an especially inopportune time, as Chipotle coupons had recently been given out in exchange for donating blood. <a href="http://www.policymattersohio.org/outbreak-in-ohio-cost-of-the-2008-norovirus-incident-in-kent">Activists pointed to the outbreak</a>, which was rumored to have been linked to an infectious employee, as evidence of the necessity of providing paid sick days and discouraging ill employees from showing up to work.</p><h3>5. California, 2008</h3><p>More than 20 people who ate at a Chipotle in La Mesa, Calif. in March and April 2008 developed hepatitis A.</p><p><a href="http://outbreakdatabase.com/details/chipotle-grill-restaurant-unknown-2008/?outbreak=chipotle">No source</a> for the outbreak was definitely determined, but a number of customers filed lawsuits against Chipotle following their illnesses. With another tap, the heel slides out again so you can glide into the party with your legs looking five inches longer as desired, throwing away the no-pain, no-gain adage, along with bunions and swollen ankles.<br />

5. <strong>A weighing machine that can lie: </strong>Not big dramatic lies where you wonder if you have left Earth and are now under the moon’s gravitational pull; just small white lies, like a kilo or two here and there.<br />

6. <strong>A drone trained to spy on your mother-in-law:</strong> It sets off multiple alerts each time she is on her way to your house so that you can make a quick exit and be saved from spouting endless variations of, ‘Yes, you are right Mummyji’ while cowering with fear at what she will find fault with next.<br />

7. <strong>A pair of cyborg arms to attach to your own two flesh-and-blood ones:</strong> An absolute must for the three hours that you have in the evening, after coming back from work and before going to bed. With this invention, multitasking would be a breeze — draw a diagram for your daughter’s project, throw some marinated chicken into the oven, make the husband’s favorite gin and tonic which apparently doesn’t taste the same when he makes it himself, and slather on the heavily advertised de-wrinkling face pack that will make you look 10 years younger in 10 minutes. After a while, you may wonder how you even did it all earlier with just two arms.<br />

8. <strong>A camera with an inbuilt projector embedded in the retina:</strong> To be used on men with convenient amnesia whenever they say that they have absolutely no recollection of agreeing to a particular thing. This blanket statement covers everything from taking the dog to the vet, visiting our second cousin Chunna and going to see a play called Vagina Monologues. Just turn your steely gaze to a blank wall and replay that particular recorded incident with the date and time as irrevocable proof.<br />

9. <strong>A pen with inbuilt darts:</strong> Handy when men talk over you, drowning out your views, or down to you, like you are an imbecile. Point the pen and a tiny tranquilizer dart discretely flies out across the conference table and sticks them in the neck causing an immediate allergic reaction with itchy hives at which point you can always smile sweetly and say, ‘You know that looks like a nasty autoimmune disorder, are you sure you are not allergic to your own bullshit?’<br />

10.<strong> A chill pill:</strong> As I sat alone to write this piece, I heard the old clamouring in my head, telling me that I should spend this time reading a book to the baby, checking on my son’s homework or looking into the man of the house’s dinner, and that I can get back to my task once they don’t need me and have gone to bed.<br />

We are so busy being mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives that the time we spend on ourselves, on our work, is laced with self-reproach. So, I propose a pill made in the laboratory of our minds that gets rid of that nagging voice in the head caused by years of conditioning.
