Gadkari votes, predicts 'record-breaking' win for BJP-Sena Mumbai, Oct 21 () Union Minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> on Monday expressed confidence that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance will form the next government in Maharashtra with a "record- breaking victory". Gadkari, who was among the early voters in Nagpur, said people will vote on the basis of the five-year performance of the <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government at the Centre and the Devendra Fadnavis-led dispensation in Maharashtra. "The BJP-Sena will have a record-breaking victory and Fadnavis will be the chief minister again," he told reporters after casting his vote. He also urged people to come out to vote and strengthen the democracy, and said NOTA (none of the above) was not a good option in democracy. Besides Gadkari, NCP MP Supriya Sule and her mother Pratibha Pawar were also among the early voters, who exercised their democratic right at Baramati in <keyword id="2094" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword>. "The Congress-NCP alliance will form the next government," claimed Sule, who is the daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. State Housing Minister <keyword id="6361973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="radhakrishna-vikhe-patil">Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil</keyword> and his family members cast their votes at Shirdi in Ahmednagar. Former cricketer <keyword id="66710" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sandeep-Patil">Sandeep Patil</keyword>, who was also among the early voters at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, said more than the party, the merit of an individual candidate was important. "We should vote for candidates who work for their constituencies," he said. Polling began on Monday morning in all 288 Assembly constituencies of the state. The voting commenced at 7 am and will end at 6 pm.

New Delhi, Feb 4 () Phone directory app Truecaller on Tuesday said it has achieved profitability over the last four months with India contributing significantly to the growth.
 The Stockholm-based company has also crossed the 200 million monthly active users (MAUs)-mark globally. Of this, 150 million were from India.
 "The aggressive growth in advertising sales and premium subscriptions in India have been a driving force in revenue generation," Truecaller said in a statement.
 Premium subscriptions have grown immensely since it was launched a year back, it added.
 "It has already crossed the 1-million mark and projected to grow by another 50 per cent in coming months," according to the statement. 
 Sandeep Patil, Managing Director at Truecaller, said the company has been profitable for the last several months while simultaneously growing revenues at over 70 per cent annually.
 "We will continue to grow revenues through investments in advertisement, subscriptions, credit and financial services," he added.
 Patil said the company will "make in India for India by recruiting talent across technology, product management, data sciences and finance and by developing partnerships across the ecosystem".
 "This is a concrete milestone on our path to build a financially-sustainable independent company that will be ready for an initial public offering (IPO) in three years," he noted.
 Truecaller is also expanding its business portfolio with services like Truecaller for Business.
 Another feature being revamped is Truecaller Priority, which identifies relevant calls from businesses, thereby differentiating them from spam calls. SR ANS

New Delhi, Mar 5 () Eight out of 10 women in India receive harassment and nuisance calls with Chennai, New Delhi and Pune emerging as the most-affected metros by sexual harassment calls/SMS against women, according to a report by Truecaller.The third edition of 'Understanding the impact of harassment calls and SMS for women in India' found eight out of 10 women respondents in India saying they have faced phone harassment and nuisance calls through calls and SMS messages.Also, one out of five women respondents said they had received sexual and inappropriate calls. The most-affected cities in India are Chennai, New Delhi, Pune and Kolkata.Interestingly, India also had the highest rate of women taking action against harassment calls/SMS among the countries surveyed (Kenya, Columbia, Brazil and Egypt). The report noted that women in India share their number as a common practice, especially when recharging their phone at a store, visiting restaurants, shopping, entering contests and filling in logbooks. When it comes to taking action against phone harassment, 85 per cent said they blocked the number. While most women chose to ignore this, only 12 per cent reported the number to authorities, the report said."We see a worrying trend of an increase in sexual harassment for women through calls and SMS. Normalising harassment has a devastating effect on the victims. Our campaign is building a community of people who are on a mission to encourage women to #MakeTheCall and to take action against such harassment by reporting it to the relevant authorities," Truecaller Managing Director Sandeep Patil said.Truecaller stands against women's harassment in any and all forms, he added. According to a press release by the company, users from Indian market make up for 150 million monthly active users, of its total 200 million worldwide. All this is due to excessive spam calls that Indian customers are trying to block. According to data <a>revealed</a> by the company, India ranks fifth globally when it comes to spam calls and over 10% of these calls come from financial service providers. Truecaller also declared that it has turned profitable over the last four months, after a sharp revenue jump. “We are thrilled and humbled that we have been profitable for the last several months while simultaneously growing revenues at over 70% annually,” said Sandeep Patil, managing director of Truecaller. An interesting consequence of the release of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.S._Dhoni:_The_Untold_Story">M.S. Dhoni : The Untold Story</a> is that many little-known anecdotes from <keyword id="3778468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MS-Dhonis-career">MS Dhoni’s career</keyword> can now be appreciated by a larger audience. 
 The one that caught my attention the most was the story around Dhoni’s selection into the <keyword id="8675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-cricket-team">Indian cricket team</keyword>. 
 
While many in the selection panel, such as <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/143058.html">Sandeep Patil, were pushing for Dinesh Karthik</a>, Dhoni made it to the side on the back of a <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/135231.html">firm recommendation by then-captain Sourav Ganguly</a>, and Ravi Shastri. 
 
For all of his astounding success, <keyword id="6354832" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MS-Dhoni">MS Dhoni</keyword> started off as Non-Consensus selection. 
 
Why is this significant ? 
 
Most of us start with the assumption that extraordinary sporting talent is obvious to spot and should lead to a unanimous approval by the selection panel. 
 
Nothing could be further from the truth. 
 
I began to see interesting parallels between sporting selections and the way Venture Capital (VC) investors pick their investments, inspired by a set of <a href="https://25iq.com/2014/06/14/a-dozen-things-ive-learned-from-marc-andreessen/">quotes from Marc Andreessen</a>. 
 
“We think you can draw a 2×2 matrix for venture capital. …And on one axis you could say, consensus versus non-consensus. And on the other axis you can say, successful or failure.

And of course, you make all your money on successful and non-consensus. … it’s very hard to make money on successful and consensus. Because if something is already consensus then money will have already flooded in and the profit opportunity is gone. 
 
And so by definition in venture capital, if you are doing it right, you are continuously investing in things that are non-consensus at the time of investment. 
 
And let me translate ‘non-consensus’: in sort of practical terms, it translates to crazy. You are investing in things that look like they are just nuts…..The entire art of venture capital in our view is the big breakthrough for ideas. The nature of the big idea is that they are not that predictable… 
 
….Most of the big breakthrough technologies/companies seem crazy at first: PCs, the internet, Bitcoin, Airbnb, Uber, 140 characters.. It has to be a radical product. It has to be something where, when people look at it, at first they say, ‘I don’t get it, I don’t understand it. I think it’s too weird, I think it’s too unusual.’” 
 
Of course, making a non-consensus selection, whether in the world of sports or startups, is easier said than done. Consensus by definition, represents a balanced, sensible, rational view that is, in most cases, also correct. 
 
What then does it take to cross the line in order to make a crazy non-consensus selection ? 
 It turns out that the story of Sachin Tendulkar’s selection into the Indian <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> team might hold the answer. 
 
Back in 1989, the selection panel was debating whether the 16-year old Tendulkar was ready for international cricket. 
 
“What if he fails?” some in the panel asked. 
 
When it came to decision time, the ball was thrown to senior selector Naren Tamhane, who said, <a href="http://archive.mid-day.com/news/2009/sep/130909-Raj-Singh-Dungarpur-sad-demise-Cricketing-Legend-Sports-Mumbai.htm">“Gentlemen, Sachin Tendulkar never fails”</a> prompting a <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/bharat-ratna-sachin-tendulkar/top-stories/It-was-3-2-in-Sachin-Tendulkars-favour-for-1989-Pak-tour-Selector/articleshow/23919252.cms">narrow 3–2 win in favour of Tendulkar</a>. 
 
Given how Tendulkar’s career played out, Tamhane’s audacious statement appears prophetic, courageous, and even, badass. 
 
Think any longer though and you realize that it was a ludicrous, heavily biased, and quite simply, incorrect statement to make. 
 
But perhaps bias, a strong optimistic bias, is the only way we will ever make a non-consensus bet on an unproven rookie, or a crazy start-up idea. 
 
Bias repeatedly causes us to make many of our worse judgements and decisions. 
 
However, an optimistic bias is also the driving force that makes the entrepreneur believe that his odds of success are infinitely higher than his competition, the selector believe than an unproven teenage cricketer never fails, and a crazy, incomprehensible idea can be the next technological breakthrough. 
 
To borrow from <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/rare-insight-sequoia-startup-investment-calls">Shailendra Singh</a>, a winning non-consensus investment happens as a result of someone 
 
“…willing to put his neck on the line and is literally pounding the table to assert investment in a startup he believes in..” 
 
That sort of conviction will always necessarily need to be loaded with bias. 
 
But why go through all the song and dance of a heavily-biased non-consensus selection when the stakes are so high ? 
 
Wouldn’t it be safer to just go with a consensus selection ? 
 
Wouldn’t it ? 
 
In the 1984 NBA college draft, the Portland Trail Blazers <a href="http://www.npr.org/2012/12/20/167677752/film-bad-legs-hindered-bowies-time-in-portland">chose Sam Bowie over a certain Michael Jordan</a> (Who was then picked up by the Chicago Bulls). 
 
And no, it was not even close to being a Non-consensus decision. In fact, according to “Dr. Jack” Ramsay, the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers at the time, 
 
“It made the most sense for us to select Sam Bowie. It was almost a no-brainer.”
