<br /> <keyword id="125233" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sandisk">SanDisk</keyword> launched a host of upgrades today while also launching a one-of-its kind flash storage solutions iXpand Flash Drive. At a time when people are going gaga over cloud as a storage option, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/This-is-why-Sandisks-new-iXpand-Flash-Drive-is-a-boon-for-iPhone-users/articleshow/52238120.cms">SanDisk</a> has been able to increase the demand of solid state drives. Revenue from the business, which makes SSDs used in PCs and laptops, jumped 55% in its quarterly earnings report in April2016, as reported by Reuters.
<br /><br /> So how does SanDisk play this tough game? <keyword id="6454000" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajesh-Gupta">Rajesh Gupta</keyword>, Country Manager of India and SAARC, SanDisk says the simple rule of the game is to go by the consumer demand. But while all companies do that, SanDisk is one of the very few who creates the demand. <br /><br />

	Here are the golden marketing strategies of SanDisk, as told to us by Rajesh.
<br /><br />

	1. Constantly innovating on the storage front. While doing so it focuses on three areas- storage, security and design. SanDisk invests a majority of their R&amp;D to design, a more user-friendly and app driven approach. 
<br /><br />

	2. Next after innovation, comes marketing. 
<br /><br />

	“A lot of these devices are there to solve the problems of the users but the major problem is they are not aware of it. So we have started an extensive training programme at our retail shops where in they will be trained about the devices launched in the market and how to market them,” said Rajesh.
<br /><br />

	For this SanDisk has started an unique venture, a 3 minute video for users explaining in simple terms why a particular device should matter to them.
<br /><br />

	“Often retail shops distribute brochures but how many of us actually have a look at it? So we come up with short interesting videos to appeal to them,” he added.
<br /><br />

	3. At times when almost all technology giants are adapting to online strategies, SanDisk is taking the risk to expand its offline market.
<br /><br />

	“We can’t deny that offline market contributes to the majority of sales even today. While for Tier-1 cities, we would go for online strategy, in Tier-2 and Tier-3 offline market is our lifeline,” he explained.

The idea is to alert those at high risk of being infectious so they quarantine, allowing the rest of us to move about with relative confidence. For this to work though, your contact tracing app needs to be able to 'handshake' with everyone else's — which is why the profusion of incompatible solutions is a mortal mistake.</p><p>Singapore launched a COVID-19 contact tracing app on March 20. Israel launched theirs three days later, and things snowballed from there. The smorgasbord of governments promoting incompatible apps now includes those of Austria, China, the Czech Republic, Ghana, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Italy, North Macedonia, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, and South Korea, with the promise of more to come from Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. Not to be outdone, the great state of Utah is working on its own contact tracing app, as are several other states. The path to hell, as they say, is paved with good intentions.</p><p>COVID-19 doesn't know there's a border between Denmark and Germany, and neither should our contact tracing. Flooding the planet with provincial apps that nobody uses makes it harder to get what we really need: a universal solution that is actually installed by billions of people.</p><p>Here's a three-step proposal for achieving just that.</p><h2><strong>Step 1: W</strong>e need a credible leader to emerge</h2><p>A few days ago, it did: <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> and Apple joined forces to create an anonymous and global contact tracing technology which will be built into every Android and iOS smartphone. Their architecture neither stores nor discloses personal or medical information, ensuring it cannot be abused by rogue governments, or co-opted by corporate interests.</p><p>Our own company, Lemonade, had been trying to rally support for something similar when the Google-Apple news broke, and we shelved our effort to back theirs. If we're all going to unite behind a single technology, the one by the makers of the only two mobile operating systems is the one to back.</p><h2><strong>Step 2: Other companies need to join their efforts</strong></h2><p>The second step, therefore, is for all competing initiatives to do the same: stop proliferating parochial solutions, and start backing Google and Apple. It's not enough though, to stem the splintering — we need to positively incentivize universal usage of this universal solution. Governments are leery of mandating usage of their own apps, let alone Silicon Valley's, and consumers are wary of using government-sanctioned tech. Both stances make sense, but neither heralds global adoption.</p><p>That's a problem. Modeling done at Oxford University suggests that 80% of us need to install the app if the pandemic is to be stopped. In Singapore, the poster child for contact tracing apps, only 17% of people did.</p><p>The good news is that corporations can do what governments cannot. When Edward Snowden exposed the extent of the US government's data gathering on its citizens, everyone was horrified. But we remained quite comfortable with Google harvesting far more data from our phones than the NSA ever did.</p><p>You see, when we give up some privacy in a commercial exchange, we feel like we're exercising our freedom. When governments invade our privacy, we feel like we're losing our freedom. Right or wrong, therein lies our salvation: Corporations can do what governments cannot.</p><h2><strong>Step 3: Large corporations need to build the contact tracing tech into their services</strong></h2><p>The final step then is for a few large corporations to incorporate the Google-Apple tech into their service, so that we all choose to join this effort. That's right, five or six well-placed CEOs, acting in their shareholders' best interest, can change everything for everyone without breaking a sweat.</p><p>Imagine, for example, if Starbucks' 30,000 global locations required patrons to tap their phone on a reader before entering the store, confirming they have contact tracing enabled, and are unlikely to have been in close quarters with a COVID-19 patient in the past two weeks. How much sooner might you get that white chocolate mocha frappuccino with an extra shot of espresso?</p><p>Imagine if Uber made its app run the same check automatically on your device, so that before sending a car it confirmed you are low-risk for being contagious — and extended you the same peace of mind about the driver who picks you up.</p><p>Star Alliance flies to 98% of the world's countries, AMC runs 11,000 movie theatres worldwide, the Simon Property Group controls 250 million square feet of shopping malls globally. Imagine if you had to scan your device before boarding one of those planes, entering one of those cinemas, or shopping at one of those malls.</p><p>All it would take is for these five multinationals — or a handful of similarly placed corporations — to pledge to check for the Google-Apple contact tracing before extending service to patrons, and two things would happen.</p><p>The first is that Starbucks coffee shops, Uber drivers, Star Alliance airlines, AMC cinemas, and SPG malls would all be open for business and flourishing that much sooner.</p><p>The second is that around the world countless eateries, stores, hotels, stadiums, theatres, museums, schools, trains, planes, and automobiles would take the pledge too. This cascade would ensure ubiquitous contact tracing across the globe — without a single law mandating it.</p><p>The Google-Apple architecture is entirely anonymous, allowing the world to start turning again, without sacrificing our privacy to our governments nor, indeed, to Google, Apple, or any commercial interests. In taking steps one through three, humanity will have joined forces behind a single, confidential, and global contact tracing solution — and it is humanity that will reap all the rewards.</p><p>A ubiquitous and incognito system for contact tracing can be a reality within weeks. It won't be a panacea — massive testing, social distancing, and frequent handwashing are going to be critical for a while — but it can change things beyond recognition. It will enable well-meaning people who contract COVID-19 to effortlessly and anonymously ensure anyone they may have unknowingly infected is alerted to self-quarantine — letting everyone else move about the world that much safer, that much sooner.</p><p>When it comes to contact tracing, it's like Ronald Reagan said: "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help." A contact tracing app could help stop the spread of COVID-19 only if billions of people use it — here's a 3-step plan for how to make that happen

<p>Stocks had a mostly sideways trade once again this week.</p><p>This wasn't the case for biotechs, with Valeant shares being halted severally and plunging by as much as 30% after a scathing report from a short seller.</p><p>First, the scoreboard:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>Dow:</strong> </span>17,214.90, -2.21, (-0.01%)</li><li><strong>S&amp;P 500:</strong> 2,023.51, -7.26, (-0.36%)</li><li><strong>Nasdaq:</strong> 4,853.75, -27.22, (-0.56%)</li></ul><p>And now, Wednesday's top stories:</p><ol><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Short-selling firm Citron Research asked whether <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/valeant-shares-crash-october-21-2015-10">Valeant Pharmaceuticals was the next Enron</a>. That, and allegations that the company cooked its books, sent the stock down as much as 30% in trading. Citron <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CB4QqQIwAGoVChMIsonkxKfUyAIVDHI-Ch0JtQ7i&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.citronresearch.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F10%2FValeant-Philador-and-RandO-final-a.pdf&amp;usg=AFQjCNFddPx5HXIJG5Vg3EVkjGvUu37IFg">alleged</a> that Valeant used its relationship with the pharmacy Philidor to file fake invoices that inflated its real revenues. Investors did not even know that Valeant had the option to buy Philidor until CEO Michael Pearson disclosed it on the earnings call. In response, Valeant said in a statement that all sales to Philidor and its network pharmacies were not included in the consolidated financial results that it reports externally.</span></li><li>Valeant is popular with hedge funds. And so, today wasn't good for some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-funds-that-own-valeant-2015-10">hedge funds</a> that own Valeant. Especially for Pershing Square's Bill Ackman, who owned 5.7% of shares as of the second quarter, and likely lost more than $1 billion on paper. But <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-buys-more-valeant-2015-10">Ackman bought</a> the dip: Two million more shares, and he did not sell a single share today, according to CNBC. He said he still believed in the company. But also, the stock just got cheaper.</li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ferrari-ipo-and-share-price-october-21-2015-10">Ferrari</a> jumped 15% in its trading debut, opening at $60 a share. Its initial-public-offering price was $52, at the higher end of the expected range of $48 to $52. The ticker RACE was up about 7% near the final 15 minutes of trading, giving it a market cap of about $10.54 billion.</li><li>And now for earnings: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-coca-colas-quarterly-revenue-falls-nearly-5-percent-2015-10">Coca-Cola's revenues</a> fell 5% in the third quarter, as the strong dollar continued to be a headwind for overseas sales. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.51 beat expectations for $0.50. CEO Muhtar Kent said the company remained confident in its strategies "despite a continued challenging macro environment".</li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-boeing-profit-jumps-25-percent-2015-10">Boeing's profits</a> jumped 25%, boosted by a rise in commercial aircraft deliveries. The company earned $1.70 billion, or $2.47 per share, beating estimates. Commercial aircraft deliveries rose about 7% to 199. </li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/biogen-layoffs-cutting-11-of-workforce-2015-10">Biogen</a> reported earnings, and layoffs. Revenues rose 11% to $2.8 billion, and diluted earnings per share were $4.15, both beating estimates. Biogen plans to lay off 11% of its workforce as part of a restructuring. It <span>discontinued a number of programs, including the Phase 3 program for the multiple sclerosis drug Tecfidera.</span></li><li><span>Baker Hughes posted a smaller-than-expected loss of $0.36 per diluted share. "<span>Consistent with our earlier forecast, we expect further activity reductions and pricing pressures to continue across the globe for well construction for the remainder of the year, as our customers adapt their spending to the lower oil price environment," the company said.</span></span></li><li><span><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/western-digital-buying-sandisk-19-billion-2015-10">Western Digital is buying SanDisk</a> for $19 billion. SanDisk shareholders will get $85.10 in cash and 0.0176 in shares of the storage-hardware maker WD. They intend to cut costs through the merger and introduce a broader set of products. </span></span></li><li>And finally, Weight Watchers shares fell 15% in trading. STOCKS FALL, VALEANT CRASHES: Here's what you need to know

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/apple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple</a> charges a lot of money to add more built-in storage to devices like iPads and Mac computers.</li><li>A new iPad Pro with 64 GB of storage costs $799, but moving up to 1 terabyte of storage will cost you an extra $750 - almost as much as a second iPad Pro.</li></ul><ul class="summary-list"><li>Having more built-in storage certainly has its benefits, but there are ways to get more storage for your various computers without paying the so-called Apple Tax.</li></ul><p>Apple is known for making expensive products, like iPhones and iPads.</p><p>The products themselves don't always start out costly, but one of the ways Apple makes more money from its products is by charging more money for added built-in storage.</p><p>Take the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ipad-pro-returned-24-hours-later-2018-11">new iPad Pro</a>: The 11-inch tablet starts at $799 for 64 GB of storage. But if you want the maximum storage option for the new iPad - 1 terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes - you'll have to pay $750 on top of that base cost of $799. You're basically paying for a second iPad, even though you're only getting more storage, not a second device.</p><p>The original iPad from eight years ago, by comparison, started at $499 for 16 GB of storage, and could cost as much as $699 for 64 GB. These days, you're getting more storage than ever before, but it will cost you.</p><h2>Apple's storage strategy isn't limited to iPads</h2><p>Here are the storage and pricing options for the iPhone XS. You have to pay $350, or one-third the price of the phone itself, to get a half-terabyte of storage:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And here's the storage and pricing for the new MacBook Air. You have to pay $1,200 more for max storage, but the computer itself costs $1,200 to begin with!</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And here's the storage and pricing for the new 2018 Mac Mini. You're paying $1,600 - <strong>double the price of the Mac Mini</strong>, which starts at $800 - to reach max storage:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Yes, Apple's storage tiers have changed considerably over the years: 64 gigabytes, the maximum storage option for iPads in 2010, is now the starting storage option for the iPad Pro in 2018, for example.</p><p>The math even sounds like it favors Apple: Back in 2010, $200 only gave your iPad an extra 48 GB of storage. These days, you can spend just $150 and get an extra 192 GB of built-in storage. That sounds pretty good!</p><p>But the historical context of Apple's storage pricing matters little in the end - customers will only care that Apple's built-in storage costs significantly more than what you'd find on the market in terms of external storage. Whereas Apple charges customers $750 to get a full terabyte of storage on their new iPad Pro, sites like Amazon and Best Buy list <a href="https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate-backup-plus-slim-2tb-external-usb-3-0-2-0-portable-hard-drive-red/5127041.p?skuId=5127041">2-terabyte external hard drives for as little as $80</a>.</p><p>There are benefits to choosing Apple's built-in storage over external storage, of course. Built-in storage works faster and is generally safer to use, since improperly unplugging external storage drives can result in data loss or damage. But you'll find that many people are willing to sacrifice a little risk, and a little efficiency, if it means saving hundreds of dollars, especially when you're getting the same amount of storage at the end of the day for a fraction of the price. My recommendation: As long as you're careful and patient, getting storage elsewhere can lead to some big cost savings.</p><h2>How to get around Apple's limited storage</h2><p>If you don't want to buy Apple's built-in storage, you can buy an external device, like a hard drive or a flash drive, that plugs into the USB port to give you more room for your files and documents. You can find tons of external storage options from Seagate, Toshiba, and SanDisk <a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=external+storage&amp;rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aexternal+storage">on Amazon</a>, for instance.</p><p>But that's for Mac computers. Unfortunately, iOS devices like iPhones and iPads are incompatible with external storage. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ipad-pro-not-compatible-with-external-storage-2018-11">Even the new iPad Pro that launched this month doesn't work with external hard drives</a>, despite the move to replace Lightning charging with USB-C.</p><p>If you want external storage that will work across your Mac computers <em>and </em>iOS devices, the best solution is cloud storage, which is pretty affordable.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-drive-apple-icloud-dropbox-cloud-storage-comparison-2018-8">We compared Google Drive with Apple's iCloud and Dropbox to find the best cloud storage solution - and the winner is clear</a></em></p><p>Apple's iCloud, and even services like Box, Dropbox, Google Drive are relatively inexpensive or free, even if you need a ton of storage. iCloud, in particular, is baked into iOS and makes it pretty easy to find and access your computer files - plus it's relatively cheap, as you can get 50GB of storage for just $0.99 a month. Then, figure out how much more storage you need.</p><p>Sometimes, the best solution is buying a big external hard drive with way more storage than you'll ever need and calling it a day. Apple charges a ton of money for built-in storage - here's how to get around it

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Steve Wozniak.</p></div><p></p></div></div>SanDisk, a company that makes flash memory chips, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sandisk-is-buying-fusion-io-for-11-billion-2014-6">has agreed to buy Fusion-io</a>, one of the first companies to build <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> storage using flash, for $1.1 billion.</p>
<p>It agreed to pay $11.25 per share, a 21% premium over Fusion-io's stock price at the close of business Friday and a brilliant soft-landing for Fusion-io, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/fusion-io">which spent 2013 in a tailspin. </a></p>
<p>Fusion-io was a 2011 IPO darling well-known as the employer of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the company's chief scientist.</p>
<p>But things started to unravel for the company in 2012 when it admitted publicly that it was heavily reliant on just two customers: Facebook and Apple. They accounted for <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/fusion-io-apple-facebook-customer-concentration-hurts-for-now-7000010638/">about 50% of revenues</a> at the time and both companies said they had plenty of flash storage and would buy less in the future.</p>
<p>Months later, in the spring of 2013, the two co-founders suddenly left the company, David Flynn (CEO) and Rick White (CMO). In the coming months, other execs would leave, too, its CFO, Dennis Wolf, and <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1383729/000119312513423199/d620994ddefr14a.htm">its chief sales offer, James Dawson.</a></p>

<p>HP was Fusion-io's third-biggest customer. But HP also sells enterprise storage, and had just launched its own line of flash storage products that compete with Fusion-io.</p>
<p>Robison left HP in 2011, about the time HP removed CEO Leo Apotheker and hired Meg Whitman. Months later, Whitman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shane-robison-hp-autonomy-2012-11">publicly blamed Robison for</a> HP's mess with Autonomy, a company it acquired for $11 billion during Apotheker's reign, writing off $8.8 billion on it less than a year later amidst ugly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hp-and-autonomy-fight-gets-uglier-2014-2">accusations that HP had somehow been duped it into paying too much.</a></p>
<p>Despite the public browbeating, Robison was still well respected at HP, sources told Business Insider, and managed to keep Fusion-io's relationship with HP from falling off a cliff.</p>
<p>In fact, just last week, <a href="http://thevarguy.com/secure-cloud-data-storage-news-and-information/061214/hp-first-market-fusion-io-atomic-series-platform">the two companies announced</a> that HP would be the first company to sell Fusion-io's latest and great storage system to customers that bought HP's servers. That's an amazing accomplishment since HP is also trying to sell its own competing 3PAR flash storage systems to those same customers.</p>
<p>As nice as that is, Fusion-io wasn't exactly prospering in a market that now had all kinds of competition. Everyone from startups to established enterprise hardware makers are now selling enterprise flash storage systems. Analysts were expecting Fusion-io to report annual revenues down over 10% year-year-year, according <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=FIO+Analyst+Estimates">to Yahoo Finance.</a></p>

He controlled over 6% of the company, or about 6.6 million shares, according to the <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1383729/000119312513395917/d588320ddef14a.htm#rom588320_49">latest proxy documents filed with the SEC</a>. That stake is worth over $74 million.</p>
<p>That's icing on the cake for Flynn. After leaving Fusion-io, he and co-founder White turned around and launched another startup, Primary Data. It's already <a href="http://www.pehub.com/2014/02/primary-data-rakes-in-60-mln-in-series-b-funds/">raised $60 million in venture funds</a>. It is still in stealth, but we know it's <a href="http://www.primarydata.com/">another storage startup.</a></p>
<p>It's hard to say how much money Robison did for his one year as CEO. He owned about 170,399 shares of Fusion-io, worth $1.9 million with the acquisition, <a href="http://www.nasdaq.com/quotes/insiders/robison-shane-v-80624">according to trading forms</a>. But he was due to be granted hundreds of the thousands more shares as part of a golden parachute or if the company changed hands.</p>
<p>Let's just say, he did well for himself, too.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, we don't know if Woz will stick with Fusion-io/SanDisk or move on. He hasn't tweeted <a href="https://twitter.com/stevewoz">anything about the deal yet.</a></p>
