Starting with a family, which had a dealership of Bajaj Auto's scooters, to becoming the owner of a household name in consumer appliances who could afford to have <keyword id="143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bollywood" source="Orion">Bollywood</keyword> superstar <keyword id="1671" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shah-rukh-khan" source="Orion">Shah Rukh Khan</keyword> as the brand ambassador, <keyword id="15333" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="venugopal" source="Orion">Venugopal</keyword> <keyword id="18489" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dhoot" source="Orion">Dhoot</keyword>'s is a story of an aggressive small town businessman's pursuit to be on the top. Now arrested in connection with the ICICI Bank loan fraud case, Venugopal Dhoot during his heydays was not the one to simply sit on small achievements like <keyword id="6354248" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="videocon" source="Orion">Videocon</keyword> becoming the largest television set manufacturer in India. The eldest son of late Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot, who founded the <keyword id="6379256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="videocon-group" source="Orion">Videocon Group</keyword> in 1984, Venugopal was largely responsible for driving the conglomerate to diversify into various verticals, such as oil and gas, real estate and retail, beyond its successful consumer electronics and home appliances business. Dhoot, the safari-suited businessman, was born into an agricultural family in Ahmednagar (Maharashtra), where his father had a cotton ginning mill and operated a wholesale grain trade. In 1982, when the public broadcaster Doordarshan began transmitting colour television programmes in India, it opened a new segment. Here the Dhoot family tried their luck in the uncharted territory of manufacturing conventional tube-based colour TV sets. Dhoot who had an engineering degree from the University of Pune set off to Japan for a year to be trained at electronics companies. In 1986, he founded Videocon International, which aimed at manufacturing 1,00,000 TV sets a year. It entered into technical collaboration with the Japanese major Toshiba and from here there was no looking back. From colour TV sets, Videocon in the 1990s expanded into other verticals, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, home entertainment systems and other small appliances. It pushed contemporary rivals like Mirc Electronic (Onida), Salora, Weston etc with affordable pricing. Its TV models like Bazooka and Bazoomba were the market's favourites in the early 90s. After having success in its consumer electronics and home appliances business, Dhoot expanded Videocon Industries into other areas, such as Oil &amp; Gas, cellular services and others. However, Dhoot's downfall started when it entered into the cellular service area with Videocon Telecommunications. It could launch commercial services only in 11 out of the 18 circles it held licences. In 2012, after the 2G spectrum case, the Supreme Court cancelled 122 licences issued by the central government in 2008, 21 licences belonged to Videocon. In the 2012 spectrum auction, Videocon won back licences in 6 circles but sold to the market leader <keyword id="6354287" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bharti-airtel" source="Orion">Bharti Airtel</keyword> and shut down operations. Moreover, in the late 90s South Korean giants like LG Electronics and Samsung entered the Indian market, which disrupted consumer electronics and appliances with the latest technology and quality products at affordable pricing. Though Videocon Industries had several verticals, its main cash cow was the consumer electronics and appliances business. As Videocon failed to face the challenges from rivals Sony, LG and Samsungs, its revenue got stagnated and gradually it sat on a pile of debt. Dhoot tried to pair debts by selling some of his assets. The company merged its DTH business with Dish TV. They sold ownership in some of their gas fields and telecom business, but it did not work. Finally, in 2018, it was dragged to the insolvency tribunal NCLT by its creditor. It owed around Rs 31,000 crore to the banks, including interests. At the request of lenders, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has conducted a consolidated corporate insolvency resolution process by combining Videocon Industries and the other 12 Videocon group companies. In June 2021, a bid of merely Rs 2,692 crore from billionaire Anil Agarwal's Twin Star Technologies to take over Videocon Industries was approved by the NCLT. This also went into controversy. Earlier this year, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) had set aside Twin Star's Rs 2,692 crore bid, directing to invite fresh bids. Though it was challenged before the Supreme Court by Twin Star, the creditors of Videocon Industries are still looking for a buyer. According to some sources, the lenders may even consider liquidation, if they fail to find a buyer for the company, which once was a success story. From an industry leader to a defaulter: Rise and fall of Venugopal Dhoot

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Samsung-leads-Indias-affordable-smartphone-market/articleshow/52203069.cms">establishing its name in the mobile phone market</a>, <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> Electronics is now aiming to grab market share in the Indian television and white goods market from its rivals LG and Videocon. 
 
As of now, the South Korean conglomerate is expanding its portfolio of several consumer products such as single-door and smaller frost-free refrigerators, 32-inch televisions, semi-automatic washing machines and entry-to-mid segment microwave ovens, two senior industry executives to <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/samsung-to-focus-on-mid-level-and-premium-products-to-grab-market-share-from-rivals-lg-videocon/articleshow/53257023.cms">ET</a>, requesting anonymity.

With these expanded services, Samsung would also need more service centres, which it is soon planning to open in smaller towns of the country. 
 
As per the executives, even if a segment isn’t marginally profitable or the growth rate is slow, Samsung does not plan to exit it, since its strategy is to be present across all price points.

 When contacted by ET, <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> VP Rajeev Bhutani declined to comment on internal strategies, but acknowledged the increasing in the number of service centres. 
 
"We are hopeful that demand from the rural market will expand with a rise in growing aspirations of an expanding base of middle-class buyers. We sense a surge in the aspiration levels of the youth in small towns and even in rural areas who have good insights into new technology and want a better lifestyle," Bhutani said.

To make a strong foothold in the consumer electronics business, Samsung aims to follow the same trade strategy as it follows in its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Samsung-not-Apple-leads-Indias-premium-smartphone-segment/articleshow/52038549.cms">smartphone business</a>, which involves getting dealers and retailers to log details of each unit sold so that better customer service can be ensured while also tracking final sales. 
 
Bhutani also shared the company’s excitement about the upcoming festival season, expecting to grow at double the market growth rate in the coming six months.

After mobile phones, Samsung aims to grab a major share in consumer products segment

Chinese smartphone makers <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> and <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> are building ammunition to beat <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> in India and for this, they are raking in whopping Rs 2, 200 crore in marketing this year. The amount apparently exceeds the marketing budget of Samsung, LG, <keyword id="6354248" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Videocon">Videocon</keyword>, and Sony. Oppo and Vivo are going to spend the money in expansion of their sales network by 25% through non-conventional stores, and consumer electronic stores. Reportedly, Oppo and Vivo have also asked several smaller cellphone stores to reduce their focus on Samsung smartphones. For this, they are willing to compensate the potential loss of business. "Oppo-Vivo are focusing on volume sales, paying retailers upfront for prominent signages and branding for the next 1-2 years and even offering 5-10% more margin to retailers and shopfloor sales promoters," a senior executive with a leading cellphone retail chain told ET. They are taking up the outdoor advertising space like never before. ET reported the two companies are spending more than Rs 20 crore each on outdoor media in large cities and are also expanding the advertisement thrust to smaller towns and rural markets. They are now approaching shops or spots that do not even deal with cellphones. Counterpoint Research analyst Karn Chauhan said Oppo and Vivo are ramping up their distribution presence driven by strong push from their aggressive marketing campaigns. "Ramping up not just the offline presence but their service network and bringing new features in the product portfolio will be the key to beating Samsung in India," he told ET.

This is not going down well with the telcos, we spoke to industry body <keyword id="6373028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="COAI">COAI</keyword> who is of the view that Jio is playing an unfair game and COAI members (including <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone, Idea) will no longer extend their interconnect capacity to Jio as they don’t consider Jio as a full fledge telecom operator until they stop their free trial testing and commercially launch their services.

This fast growing Jio’s ‘free service’ partnership with smartphone makers is adding more fire to the never ending war of words with the existing telecom operators in the country over Jio's trial offer. Telecom operators <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Airtel-Vodafone-Ideas-asks-govt-to-stop-Jios-free-data-trial-offer/articleshow/53647221.cms">have written to the top govt offices</a> including the PMO about Jio's three month free trial offer and how it's helping Jio poach their customers. 
 
Now with Jio growing bigger by the day without having launched their services commercially, telcos have taken a stern stand to stop providing any further interconnect capacity to Relaince Jio. This move can potentially hurt Reliance Jio’s voice services as it is already a huge concern for Jio “It would clearly not be prudent for RJIL to contemplate launching of commercial services with this level of call failures” Jio had said. While telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea have claimed that they have provided Jio with enough interconnect capacity to meet the usual demand of 15 to 20 million customers and now the industry will not extend the interconnect capacity any further until Jio enters the market as a full-fledge telecom player. With the growing number of Jio subscribers this could lead to a huge concern for Reliance Jio and not to mention yet another spark in this never ending battle.

Telcos pull the plug on call support for Reliance Jio as Jio’s ‘free service’mobile partnerships grow rapidly

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=micromax&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Micromax</a> is venturing into the white goods segment and plans to become a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=consumer+electronics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">consumer electronics</a> company in the next two years. 
 
As India’s second-largest handset maker is foraying into the air-conditioner, refrigerator and washing machine segment, it wants to disrupt the space with pricing. 
 Also, <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> expects the consumer electronics business will contribute around 25% to its revenues by next year and help it in achieving a target of being a Rs 15,000-crore company. 
 
"We will remain an MNC challenger. We are a proven player fighting MNC smartphone brands for the past eight years with innovation and technology, and will continue with the same strategy for white goods. Pricing will be the icing on the cake, but not the cake itself. We will be a disruptor in consumer electronics space with product offerings and technology," Micromax Informatics cofounder Rajesh Agarwal told ET. 
 
Micromax may face a stiff competition in the segment as other brands such as Whirlpool, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=samsung&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Samsung</a>, Voltas, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=panasonic&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Panasonic</a>, Videocon and Godrej are also eyeing a big share in the market, which is led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LG&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">LG</a>. 
 
"The market potential is huge since out of 100 homes which own a television, only five have an airconditioner. Next year, we will take it pan-India across both online and offline stores and expand the portfolio," he told ET. 
 
Micromax is placing its bet on television, air-conditioner, refrigerators and washing machines. 
 
"We were the first Indian brand to think of manufacturing four years back. We are in talks with various state governments who are offering us incentives to set up a plant for white goods," said Agarwal.

Micromax is going to disrupt consumer electronics space, wants to MNC challenger

KOLKATA: Voltas established a clear lead in air-conditioners sold through multi-brand outlets in the past fiscal year, dethroning <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>, the first time in almost 14 years that a local manufacturer was able to topple South Korean companies in any major segment in the fiercely competitive Rs 50,000-crore consumer electronics market. 
 
This follows a year in which Voltas emerged as a front-runner in the category, fighting LG for ascendancy. The performance by Voltas came in the face of scepticism that success in FY13 had been a flash in the pan and that no domestic brand could make a dent in the dominance of the multinationals in multi-brand outlets, where 90% of total industry sales take place. 
 The <keyword id="6383291" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="ACS">ACs</keyword> made by the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword> unit had a 20% share in multi-brand outlets followed by LG at 18% and Samsung at 10.8% in the April 2013-February 2014 period, according to the latest data from market researcher GfKNielsen that tracks sales in the durables industry. Voltas is ahead by value as well at 18.9%, followed by LG at 17.9% and Samsung at 10.6%. 
 
This was the first full year in which Voltas sustained its leadership throughout, with LG having fought back to the top in some months in FY13. 
 
However, LG is still the market leader when counting sales in multi-brand outlets and its own exclusive stores. 
 
As per GfK-Nielsen, LG India has a 22% share by this measure, with Voltas at 18%, followed by Samsung at 14%. Since multi-brand outlets account for the dominant share of AC sales, it's a fair measure of competition, said Pradeep Bakshi, president and COO, unitary cooling products business group. 
 
“We are targeting more than 25% share this year. For this, we have launched more than 90 models,” he said. LG India seemed to reject the reasoning offered by Voltas.

	“We would like to mention that LG is market leader in AC segment and figures mentioned in the mail are representing manipulative and incorrect form of market share,” it said in an email without responding on other queries sent as part of a detailed questionnaire.
To be sure, as a delayed summer gets under way, LG will be more than ready to unleash the might of its vast marketing machine. Voltas will have a tough task as LG has been pushing back hard with higher margins this season, said a senior executive of a leading electronic retail chain. 
 
“Another area where Voltas has not worked hard is to increase the appeal of the brand among younger consumers, for whom Hitachi and Daikin are the preferred brands and may settle for a LG or Samsung if budget does not permit,” he said. 
 
Still, the turnaround at Voltas is big news at Bombay House, the Tata group headquarters, considering the many Indian brands that lost out after LG and Samsung entered the Indian market in the late 90s. 
 Homegrown brands such as BPL, Videocon, Onida, <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> and Voltas lost lustre starting 2000-01, with the South Koreans kicking off their marketing thrust. IFB was one of the few Indian brands to maintain its grip on the market in the niche front-loading washing segment until about four years ago, when LG took over as leader. 
 LG India has built the country's largest network of company-branded exclusive stores in the durables industry, with more than 1,800 such franchisees. As per estimates, such stores account for around 20% of LG India's sales, the highest contribution from this category in the industry. However, AC makers including Hitachi, Daikin, Voltas and <keyword id="345443" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Carrier">Carrier</keyword> have not focused on setting up exclusive stores since most AC sales take place in multi-brand stores such as local outlets, regional chains and modern retail. 
 
The executives most credited with the Voltas turnaround are Bakshi and managing director Sanjay Johri. The process started eight years ago when Bakshi was given the task of turning around the air-conditioner business by the board, with the condition that if he failed, the business may be sold. At the time Voltas was at a negligible 6-7th position in the market, with accumulated losses of Rs 140 crore. 
 
“Regaining market leadership has indeed been a Herculean task, considering LG was a tough market leader and the AC category has been one of the most penetrated with more than 25 international and domestic brands jostling for their share of the wallet,” said Bakshi, who joined Voltas after stints at Electrolux and Godrej Appliances. Bakshi’s strategy involved launching India’s first energy efficient air-conditioner in 2007, three years before the government made energy ratings mandatory, pricing the models Rs 2,000-3,000 higher than LG and Samsung. Advertisements said energy efficiency would lower electricity bills. 
 
He also shut two factories that could not produce such models. In 2012, Voltas launched its biggest success to date -- the all-weather AC range. He also employed one of LG's strategies to great success. “The AC business was traditionally done by dealers who would specialise in this field. LG had changed the game by selling AC in the general trade and we too decided to follow suit. We currently have more than 9,400 such outlets where our products are sold. This changed the game for us too,” said Bakshi. 
 
The air-conditioner business is now the highest contributor toward profitability for Voltas, encouraging Bakshi to draft a blueprint to expand the brand into household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines with a target to expand revenue to Rs 5,000 crore in five years. The business is the second-largest revenue contributor for Voltas, after electro-mechanical projects and services, with sales of Rs 1,835 crore in 2012-13 with a profit of Rs 173 crore. Total net sales for Voltas in 2012-13 amounted to Rs 5,514 crore . 
 
The brand lends itself very strongly to the domain of air and water, said Deba Ghosal, head of marketing and key accounts. “If you add our pedigree of cooling expertise, leadership position, and the trust factor of a Tata brand, the possibilities to expand into other categories are immense,” he said. 
 
Bakshi acknowledges challenges ahead such as increasing appeal to younger consumers. “But we are on the way. For instance, this year we have launched a smartphone app to control the AC and are also targeting social media,” he said. 
 
Bakshi is also betting on his new team, which consists of seasoned talent from the industry. This includes Rahul Jain, who joined from LG to head service, Ghosal, another ex-LG India executive, and Manish Desai, who moved from Onida to head finance.

Voltas Topples LG, Samsung In Consumer Electronics; Grabs No 1 Spot In ACs

There are brands that make you feel nostalgic. Among the electronics brands, BPL, Kenstar, Kelvinator, Sansui and Onida evoke the same feeling. The once superstar brands who had once ruled the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/home-appliance">home appliance segment</a> in Indian households are now depending on ecommerce portals for a revival, if not survival. 
 
These brands are lowering their prices to compete against their gigantic rivals like Samsung, LG, Panasonic and many others. BPL has entered into a three-year exclusive sales deal with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Flipkart">Flipkart </a>to relaunch its brand after almost a decade. Also, three of Videocon's brands - Sansui, Kelvinator and Kenstar - are selling airconditioners exclusively online for lack of pull in retail stores. 
 
Getting a good response from their online sales of washing machine, Onida has decided to sell TVs and ACs online as their presence in brick and mortar stores have become next to negligible. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=amazon">Amazon</a>, Snapdeal and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=paytm">Paytm</a>, too, are emerging as critical online marketplaces for these comeback brands. 
 
"If ecommerce can account for 50% of white goods sales in China, it is possible it will scale up at the same pace in India in the next 4-5 years, which means a huge opportunity to gain back lost share," said Gulu Mirchandani, chairman and managing director of Mirc Electronics, the owner of the Onida brand. "The number of positive reviews we have gained from buyers in ecommerce helps to build the brand and viral marketing." Onida expects to gain a 3-4% share from ecommerce sales in one year, he added. 
A recent study by Google and Forrester Consulting estimates that about 100 million people will make online purchases in India by 2016 and half of them would be new online shoppers from Tier 1 and Tier II cities. 
 
A senior Videocon executive, on condition of anonymity, said that, online is better since competitors such as LG and Samsung are averse to such platforms. "The overhead costs are almost half in online than in retail shops. And there is a large breed of impulse buyers who purchase just on price in online," he said. The executive said it is lucrative to focus more on online for not-so-popular brands because building a sales team and offline distribution is both time consuming and expensive. 
 
For most of these brands, returning to the market or expanding into new categories does not involve high investment. Videocon introduced its three brands into air-conditioners by utilising idle capacity, while others are importing products from China and launching them under their label. 
 
Videocon wants to extend its Sansui, Kenstar and Kelvinator brands into new categories like microwave ovens and televisions only through ecommerce. Maharaja Whiteline, which was recently acquired by Europe's Groupe SEB, is also betting on online sales to revive the brand. 
 
Groupe SEB India chief executive Sunil Wadhwa said the future belongs to ecommerce. "Ecommerce today can reach pin codes where it will be difficult for us to reach through brick-and-mortar stores," he said. The business of Maharaja Whiteline has doubled in the past six months in ecommerce.

BPL and Onida have something in common with Xiaomi and Micromax. It’s not what you think!

Several <keyword id="6361185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="consumer-electronics">consumer electronics</keyword> companies, including LG, Samsung, Videocon, Sony and Panasonic have said that products sold through online marketplaces without their knowledge will not be eligible for after-sale service. These companies have also asked the e-tailers to be fair in pricing. 
 Its effect was evident yesterday (Tuesday) during <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>'s Savings Day Sale and Amazon's Appiness Day. Both the companies avoided heavy discounts below the operating market price. For instance, iPhone 5s, Snapdeal's star product having an operating market price of Rs 35,000 was available for Rs 31,499 – a discount of 10%. The 'unauthorised sale' clause was brought in to avoid October 6 like situation, when brick-and-mortar retailers were agitated over heavy discounts by <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> on television and mobile phones. 
 
"The flash sales by Snapdeal and Amazon were not marred by controversy or complaints by consumer electronics companies," Amit Chadha, secretary-general of the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association, said. "During Flipkart's Big Billion Day Sale, we received complaints within the first two hours. There was complete chaos. This time around there were no such issues," he added. 
 
Manish Sharma, managing director of Panasonic India and South Asia, said, "We have always managed the expectations of our partners and stakeholders by ensuring that their interests are taken care of. We believe e-retailers and retail outlets will continue to co-exist to create a holistic and beneficial setting for the consumer."

Electronic Products Sold During Online Flash Sale May Not Get After-sale Service

After the success story of smartphone sales online, <keyword id="15765" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="whirlpool">Whirlpool</keyword>, Godrej and other white good manufacturers are now considering the e-commerce platform seriously. 
 
They have even begun developing a separate line of models for online sales and are mulling setting up their own brand stores on e-commerce websites. 
 
This move will provide benefit to consumers as there would be no warranty problems and higher charges for customer service for goods bought online at a discount. 
 
India’s top e-commerce companies, Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon, are trying to bring on board makers of televisions, refrigerators and air-conditioners. 
 <keyword id="141771" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Godrej-Appliances">Godrej Appliances</keyword> vice-president and head Kamal Nandi told Economic Times the company has started to develop an exclusive line of models for Flipkart and is in talks with others, which he hopes will stop any channel conflict. 
 
Snapdeal is in talks with Samsung and Whirlpool regarding setting up their white goods brand stores on its website. 
 
Senior vice-president (electronics and home), Snapdeal, Tony Navin told Economic Times, "The pace of growth of smartphones accelerated after the brands decided to partner with e-commerce and we see similar prospect for appliances as well.” 
 
Meanwhile, Flipkart chief business officer Ankit Nagori told ET that customers nowadays were open to big purchases online. 
 
“Brand stores of VU, BPL and Whirlpool, which sell only exclusive models online, have done well since their recent launch,” he said. 
 
Amazon India director (category management) Samir Kumar told the financial daily that in categories like kitchen appliances, sales were growing at 200% and since they launched large appliances last December, the category sales grew at 30% month on month. 
 
“Televisions have already become the second-biggest electronics category after mobile phones and he sees a huge rise in demand,” he added. 
 
Reportedly, e-commerce presently accounts for 3% of sales for the Rs 40,000 crore television and white goods industry. The industry expects a 10% contribution from online in the next couple of years. 
 
Videocon chief operating officer CM Singh was of the view that e-commerce firms reached out to set up brand stores after several companies clamped down on supplies. 
 
"The brand store will be monitored by the company and the prices will be set by us. Once the order is finalised, the product will be delivered by our dealers," he told ET.
