Unlike traditional <keyword id="21033572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lithium-ion" source="keywords">lithium-ion</keyword> batteries, solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte with a solid material. This change enhances safety, reduces weight, and increases energy density. Samsung's prototype has an energy density of 500 Wh/kg, nearly double that of current mainstream EV batteries which typically hover around 270 Wh/kg. Marine ecosystems are connected and many of the species living within them are migratory. The pilot project initiated by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) plans to send three aquanauts into the deep-sea in a submersible vehicle to a depth of about 6,000 metres in 2022.<br /><br />At that depth, metals can be 15 times more concentrated than in land deposits. If it was due to a battery malfunction, it would mean fresh woes for the company. </p><p>But Samsung has said in a statement on its China website its investigation of the phone shows "the damage to this product was caused by external heating", without elaborating.</p><p>Battery maker Amperex Technology Limited said separately on Monday one of its batteries was in the Note 7 phone in question, but added its joint investigation with Samsung determined the incident was not directly linked to a battery made by the China-based firm.</p><p>"According to the burn marks on the sample, we surmise that the source of the heating comes from outside the battery, and it's very likely that there was an external factor causing the heating problem," the battery maker said in a statement.</p><p>A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the phone was damaged by an external heat source, possibly an induction oven or a fan heater. The person was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and so declined to be identified.</p><p>Another person familiar with the matter told Reuters that Samsung SDI Co Ltd was responsible for the faulty batteries that triggered the recall.</p><p>Samsung last week announced a recall of 1,858 Note 7 phones in China but those devices were products distributed before the official Sept. 1 launch. After receiving dozens of reports that Note 7 phones were overheating or exploding, Samsung issued a formal recall. The company then decided to use batteries from the Chinese manufacturer Amperex Technology Limited in replacement Note 7s.</p><p>But the Amperex batteries didn't solve the problem, and reports started popping up that even the replacement Note 7s were overheating and smoking. Most notably, a replacement Note 7 started smoking on a Southwest Airlines flight last week, forcing an evacuation before the plane could take off.</p><p>Samsung officially killed the entire Galaxy Note 7 line on Tuesday.</p><p>Early reports suggest the original run of SDI batteries were too large for the body of the Note 7, which caused them to become "pinched" and overheat or explode. Samsung's solution was to replace the SDI batteries with Amperex batteries instead, but there's no indication rigorous testing was done to make sure they were safe.</p><p>The replacement Note 7 phones with Amperex batteries were on sale within a week of the first recall. It's that rush job that could've led to the overheating in the replacement devices. The batteries may not have been to blame after all, but instead the way they were squeezed into the phone.</p><p>A Samsung spokesperson said the replacement Note 7 batteries were made by a different manufacturer than the original devices and that the company is investigating what went wrong with the replacement phones. Samsung's rush to find replacement batteries may be to blame for the Galaxy Note 7 disaster

Lee.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The mystery of why Samsung's Note 7 phones kept exploding might finally be solved. </p><p>The company is <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-to-announce-findings-of-galaxy-note7-investigations-at-press-conference">planning to reveal the results</a> of its investigation into the faulty devices this weekend, and according to a <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/samsung-investigation-blames-battery-size-for-galaxy-note-7-fires-1484906193">Wall Street Journal report,</a> it's going to blame two separate battery issues.</p><p>First up is that some Note 7 batteries were "irregularly sized", leading them to overheat and explode. That led Samsung to recall its first batch of devices.</p><p>The problems didn't stop there. Samsung stepped up phone production to make up for the Note 7 shortfall but, according to the report, that resulted in more problems. This time, the batteries had an unspecified manufacturing issues that again caused the phones to explode, leading Samsung to issue its full recall in October.</p><p>It's reportedly taken three quality-control and supply chain analysis firms to reach this conclusion, with Samsung set to blame the manufacturing partners responsible for its batteries.</p><p>A Samsung affiliate, Samsung SDI, was reportedly responsible for the first set of faulty batteries. The second batch was supplied by Hong Kong's Amperex Technology Ltd.</p><p>Samsung apparently plans to step up its testing and inspections to stop the problem from happening again.</p><p>The company is separately battling its own domestic scandal, with group chief Jay Y. Lee embroiled in <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-south-korean-court-dismisses-request-to-arrest-samsung-chief-2017-1">allegations of political corruption</a>. Samsung will reportedly blame 'irregular sized' batteries and manufacturing problems for its exploding Note 7

It also has other businesses that design and build car parts, including battery systems for electric and hybrid vehicles.</p><p>The Samsung deal includs only Magna's battery pack business, not the manufacturing business. So Apple could still work with Magna Steyr to build the cars it designs if in fact it follows through with the project.</p><p>The acquisition comes as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-is-reportedly-poaching-samsung-battery-experts-to-build-electric-car-2015-2">Apple has tried to hire away Samsung's battery experts</a> and engineers. </p><p>Samsung didn't say how much it paid for Magna's battery business. Samsung may have just thrown a wrench into Apple's car plans

AI-led molecular design made it onto the 2018 list. Since then, Deepmind’s AlphaFold predicted the structure of 200 million proteins, and the first AI-discovered drugs have entered clinical trials.<br /><br />Let’s look what technologies made it to this year’s list: <br /><br /><strong>Flexible batteries: Bend, twist &amp; stretch <br /></strong><br />The world is going flex – with rollable computer screens to smart clothing. And the systems that power them should be so too. Flexible batteries, made of lightweight materials that can be easily twisted, bent or stretched, will soon hit the market and make standard rigid batteries a thing of the past. <br /><br />“The rapidly escalating development of wearable devices, flexible electronics and bendable displays demand power sources that match the agility of these systems,” the report says.<br /><br />One study forecasts that the global flexible battery market will grow by $240.47 million from 2022-2027, accelerating at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.79%, says WEF. Several companies like LG Chem, Samsung SDI, Apple, Nokia are are actively developing and commercialising flexible battery technology. <br /><br /><strong>Generative AI: Sparring partner to conventional thinking <br /></strong><br />Imagine an algorithm that can draw the image that a human holds in his mind? That’s one example of the boundless potential of generative AI which can design drugs, aid in architecture and engineering — in addition to what ChatGPT does. <br /><br />NASA engineers are working to use this technology to build lightweight spaceflight instruments. But this technology needs to build something more, trust. <br /><br />“To build public trust in generative AI, applications should meet agreed-upon professional and ethical standards. Care should be taken to mitigate AI bias based on training data, with a focus on including “outlier” data and novel societal conventions,” WEF says. It should also address copyright attribution and more. <br /><br />With correct controls, generative AI can demonstrate the boundaries of knowledge, and act as a sparring partner to challenge conventional thinking.<br /><br /><strong>Sustainable aviation fuel: Moving up, with challenges ahead <br /></strong><br />The road-bound cousins of aeroplanes – cars, bikes and more are going green at a rapid pace. However, the cost of making the aviation sector, which contributes to 2-3% of CO2 emissions annually, is enormous. <br /><br />Enter sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that’s produced from biomass, and non-biological resources. Now it makes up for 1% of the global jet fuel demand, but must rise to 13-15% by 2040, WEF says. <br /><br />“Such an increase will require the creation of 300-400 new SAF plants; and airlines, manufacturers and fuel companies are working around the clock to enable this level of scale,” the report says, adding that availability and collection of raw materials, along with the need for sustainably produced green hydrogen, remain major challenges. <br /><br /><strong>Designer Phages: Virus that carry ‘genetic scissors’ <br /></strong><br />Viruses, as scary as they are, can be engineered to benefit humans. Key to this engineering are phages – viruses that selectively infect specific types of bacteria. <br /><br />Upon infection, a phage injects its genetic information into the bacterium. With ‘genetic scissors’, these phages can execute a set of instructions – they can change a bacterium’s functions. It can be made into a therapeutic molecule or to become sensitive to a certain drug and more.<br /><br />“Phages are also being designed as feed supplements to enhance the growth of livestock, treat certain plant diseases and eliminate dangerous bacteria in food supply chains,” WEF says. <br /><br />Locus Biosciences and Eligo Biosciences are using this approach to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. <br /><br /><strong>Metaverse for mental health: Augmenting connections <br /></strong><br />The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed the mental health crisis to such an extent that the world is falling short of health providers. The conditions are ripe for metaverse-enabled mental health treatment, WEF says. <br /><br />“Maturing interface technologies could further augment social and emotional connections between distant participants,” the report says. Many players are already working on it with gamification and other ways which can also reduce the stigma attached with mental health. <br /><br />Noninvasive neurotechnologies can provide feedback attuned to a user’s emotional state. For example, Neurable headsets use electrodes to measure emotion and can adjust music accordingly.<br /><br />Eventually, the metaverse will also connect to therapeutic neurotechnologies, such as direct brain stimulation to treat intractable depression,” WEF adds. <br /><br /><strong>Wearable plant sensors: The new frontier <br /></strong><br />Traditionally, crops have been monitored via soil testing and visual inspections, both of which are expensive and time-consuming. Recent tech advancements have been monitoring crop health via low-resolution satellite data, which has gone on to sensor equipped drones and tractors which provide information. <br /><br />The next frontier is monitoring individual plants – with wearables. “These sensors are small, non-invasive devices that can be attached to crop plants for continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, moisture and nutrient levels,” the report says. <br /><br />Growvera and Phytech have developed micro-sized needle sensors that insert into a plant’s leaves or stems to measure changes in electrical resistance, but challenges remain in terms of expense and the reading of the data might need specialised expertise. It needs data analytics tools that can help farmers ‘read it’ and make informed decisions. <br /><br /><strong>Spatial omics: Unravelling evolutionary secrets <br /></strong><br />Humans are made of millions of cells —- but what happens inside them? Spatial omics might actually help us ‘see’ the biological processes, how they work in detail that was unprecedented before. <br /><br />A spatial omics study of samples from people who died from Covid-19 revealed that SARS-CoV-2 causes widespread disruption of cellular pathways across all tissues. Scientists have also identified a set of neurons that help paralysed mice walk, sooner. <br /><br />But this technology needs to be democratised, WEF believes. It had a total market value of $232.6 million in 2021 and an estimated revenue of $587.2 million in 2030. <br /><br />While academic and translational research centres made up 89% of the market in 2020, the market is dramatically expanding to include pharmaceutical and biotech industries.<br /><br /><strong>Flexible neural electronics: Biocompatible now<br /></strong><br />Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) allow electrical signals the brain produces to be captured by sensor hardware – and are already being used for patients with epilepsy, and create prosthetic limbs connected to the nervous system.<br /><br />But the current implants are made of hard material like chips, which can scar humans and cause substantial discomfort. They cannot bend or adapt to brain movements so, over time, they “drift” in position, decreasing the accuracy. But now researchers developed these circuits on biocompatible materials that are soft and flexible. <br /><br />It can deepen understanding of conditions like dementia and autism; and can also be used to develop cardiac pacemakers and more. But eventually, it holds the potential to true human-AI interfacing – but since the data from the brain is sensitive, privacy and ethical use guidelines must be established. <br /><br /><strong>Sustainable computing: Optimism ahead <br /></strong><br />Every time we search on Google, send email or use any form of AI, we are connecting to data centres — which consume an estimated 1% of the electricity produced globally. And, this will only grow. <br /><br />There is no single “green data” magic bullet, but the coming decade will see strides toward net-zero-energy data centres. The first is to use cooling systems to dissipate the heat. Stockholm is using heat from data centres to heat homes. <br /><br />Then, AI itself can come with a solution for the heat it is generating, but analysing and optimising energy use in real-time. DeepMind has successfully demonstrated the potential of AI-powered energy management, achieving up to a 40% reduction in energy consumption at Google’s data centres.<br /><br />Crusoe Energy instals its modular data centres at sites where methane flaring occurs to enable cloud computing infrastructure to be powered by methane gas that would otherwise have been released directly into the atmosphere.<br /><br />“Given the wave of innovation and investment in this area, there is reason to be optimistic about the years ahead,” WEF says.<br /><br /><strong>AI-facilitated healthcare</strong><strong>: Easing access</strong><br /><br />Ever since the pandemic governments and academic teams alike have been using AI and ML models to improve access to patient care – to cut down the long delays many patients experience. <br /><br />This can aid developing nations in particular. India, for example, has a widely dispersed population of over 1.4 billion and has embraced an AI-based approach to enhance medical outreach. <br /><br />“The Indian government has enabled physicians to engage remote communities through assistive technologies, with requisite privacy safeguards in place,” the report says. <br /><br />However, hurdles to this system remain like patient compliance and national security concerns. “Moreover, any system that curates personal data on the health and welfare of a vast population must function within the bounds of a carefully crafted legal and ethical framework,” WEF says.<br />

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e4713734b661b691c1386e7-2000/2020-02-08t035455z1lynxnpeg1705hrtroptp4china-health-shanghai.jpg" alt="electric car factory" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /><ul class="summary-list"><li>Morgan Stanley says Tesla's electric car business should be profitable later this year.</li><li>They think that proof of profitability will unleash a wave of spending in the growing industry.</li><li>A team of analysts says that will create a domino effect of investment decisions for companies that make equipment for electric cars and charging stations.</li><li>They name 25 of the biggest potential beneficiaries of that shift, and predict that sales penetration for electric vehicles will surpass that of internal combustion vehicles in the 2030s.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-common-stock-offering-what-analysts-commentary-saying-capital-raise-2020-2-1028907106">Tesla is off to the races</a>, but a lot of other companies that stand to benefit from rising demand for electric cars are still at the starting line.</p><p>A team of Morgan Stanley analysts predicts a wave of enthusiasm in the still-young industry, and writes that Tesla's battery-powered vehicle manufacturing will become profitable this year as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-inside-tesla-delivery-ceremony-china-model-3-2019-12">its new factory in Shanghai</a> ramps up.</p><p>They say that milestone - and proof of concept at scale - will change the spending patterns for makers of semiconductors, batteries, chemicals, and those involved in mining, energy, and making charging stations. </p><p>"There are a multitude of second derivatives players that are interdependent in the EV ecosystem and touch many industries across the globe," the team wrote.</p><p>Here's how they describe the effects for original equipment manufacturers as they put more money into battery electric vehicles:</p><p>"If Tesla can indeed prove that EVs can be profitable at scale, we believe this would remove one of the key impediments preventing legacy OEMs from shifting capacity to BEVs, potentially unleashing further waves of investment into the BEV production ecosystem and its supporting infrastructure."</p><p>They add that that will start an evolution that makes electric vehicle components more profitable for those companies. And as sales climb, cost fall, and profitability improves, they thinks the effects will be dramatic.</p><p>Today, Morgan Stanley estimates that sales penetration for electric vehicles is only at 2% worldwide. But they think that will jump to 11% in five years, 24% by 2030, and 70% in 2040.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e46d1a92dae5c225b01e992-800/screen shot 2020-02-14 at 114341 am.png" alt="Electric vehicle sales forecast" /><p>They say their best idea for taking advantage of that shift is "through large cap, credible battery companies with a proven track record such as CATL, Samsung SDI, Panasonic and LG Chem."</p><p>But they've found more than 20 other companies that could be major beneficiaries.</p><p>Listed below are the 25 stocks they expect to have the most potential as investors embrace growing demand for electric vehicles and improving infrastructure for them. Almost all of them are based in Asia, and they may be less familiar to US investors.</p><p>The stocks are arranged from lowest to highest based on how much they would have to rise to reach Morgan Stanley's current price targets.</p>

Some of the cobalt used in batteries, the rights group alleges, is mined by "children as young as seven" in hazardous conditions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.</p><p>The response of some companies: It's too hard and expensive to check whether this is the case.</p><p><a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2016/01/child-labour-behind-smart-phone-and-electric-car-batteries/">Amnesty's report</a> focuses around Huayou Cobalt and its subsidiary Congo Dongfang Mining International (CDM), which it describes as "one of the world's largest manufacturers of cobalt products."</p><p>Amnesty researchers traced cobalt mined in "artisanal" mines to markets where it was purchased by traders, who then sell it on to CDM (and other companies). They then traced the supply chain that CDM supplies - which allegedly includes Apple, Samsung, Sony, Dell, HP, Microsoft, VW, LG, and others. (Some companies have denied a connection.)</p><p>Amnesty researchers found health issues, dangerous working conditions, government officials demanding illegal payments from workers, and child labourers at these "artisanal" mines that CDM gets cobalt from.</p><h2>Here's the supply chain that Amnesty mapped out:</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/569e4179dd089527488b459f-1400-1506/screen shot 2016-01-19 at 13.53.19.png" alt="amnesty international smartphone cobalt supply chain cdm" data-mce-source="Amnesty International" /><p class="source"><span>Amnesty International</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Microsoft told Amnesty a company in this supply chain linked to it is a supplier for "a very limited number of batteries for a product development project." Batteries produced by the company, Tianjin Lishen, are "not used in any product currently sold by Microsoft," it says.</p><p>Microsoft also provided Amnesty with a statement about its policy for sourcing materials. It said:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">We have not traced the cobalt used in Microsoft products through our supply chain to the smelter level due to the complexity and resources required.</p><p>Business Insider has reached out to Microsoft for further comment.</p><p>This failure to fully investigate supply chains isn't unique to Microsoft. Amnesty, introducing its report, says that it "contacted 16 multinational consumer brands listed as direct or indirect customers of the three battery component manufacturers. None said they had been in touch with Huayou Cobalt [a key cobalt supplier] or traced where the cobalt in their products had come from prior to Amnesty International's contact."</p><p>Samsung told the rights group: "It is very hard to trace the source of the mineral due to the suppliers' nondisclosure of information and the complexity of the supply chains. Therefore it is impossible for us to determine whether the cobalt supplied to Samsung SDI comes from DRC Katanga's mines."</p><p>Daimler said that while it doesn't "engage in any traceable mineral or commodity purchasing activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo," it conceded that "due to the high complexity of automotive supply chains, we are, however, not able to definitely confirm whether or not cobalt in our products originates from this region or from the mentioned companies at any stage within our supply chains."</p><p>Amnesty doesn't think much of these responses. Mark Dummett, a researcher at the rights group, called them "staggering."</p><p>He said, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2016/jan/19/children-as-young-as-seven-mining-cobalt-for-use-in-smartphones-says-amnesty">per The Guardian</a>: These are some of the biggest companies in the world, with combined profits of $125 billion and there is no excuse that companies aren't investing some of that profit into ensuring that they can trace where the minerals they are using are coming from ... Tech companies says it's too hard to investigate whether they benefit from child labour

REUTERS/Rick Wilking" /><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Panasonic focused on auto tech during CES in January,</p>Panasonic, like many companies today, is betting big on auto tech becoming a massive cash cow in the next decade.<p>New alliances are forming almost every day as companies without a traditional foothold in the automotive space try to get a slice of the pie.</p><p>Google is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-alphabet-google-self-driving-car-company-fiat-chrysler-minivan-photos-2016-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">working with</a> Fiat Chrysler on self-driving cars while making <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-volvo-partner-to-disrupt-car-infotainment-systems-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">next-generation display</a> systems for Volvo; new software startups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/otonomo-selling-car-data-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Otonomo</a> are shelling out their services to major companies like Daimler; and BMW is partnering with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-delphi-self-driving-car-partners-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">companies like Intel</a> on data collection.</p><p>Panasonic is just one of many players collaborating with the auto industry to focus on vehicles of the future.</p><p>"Our business has evolved over a period of time, especially in the recent past of going from purely a consumer business to a B2B business," Tom Gebhardt, chairman and CEO of Panasonic's North American operations, told Business Insider.</p><p>"There's a number of reasons for that: The commoditization of consumer products [and] the unfavorability in some of the cost models led us to look for better values in-vehicle technologies," he continued.</p><h2>Working with Tesla and Google</h2><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/591f334f63914721008b512b-1200/tomgebhardt hi rez xo.jpg" alt="tom gebhardt panasonic" /><p class="source"><span>Panasonic</span></p><p class="caption">Tom Gebhardt, chairman and CEO of Panasonic's North American operations.</p>Prior to taking over Panasonic's North American division in April, Gebhardt led the company's automotive division for five years. <p>Placing an executive with several years of automotive expertise at the helm of North American operations says something about the company's pivot from consumer electronics to auto tech.</p><p>That larger cultural shift came from Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga when he took over in 2012. As <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelschuman/2016/06/01/saving-panasonic-kazuhiro-tsuga-plans-more-for-the-consumer-electronics-giant/#31f1fdd3544e" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Forbes</a> details in a 2016 profile, Tsuga was key to transitioning Panasonic from its failing plasma TV business to other revenue streams, like in-flight entertainment systems in planes and electric cars.</p><p>Panasonic isn't stretching too far from its roots when it comes to this kind of vehicle tech. Gebhardt noted that Panasonic had a presence in the car radio business starting in 2008, giving it a natural introduction to multimedia displays with its electronics background.</p><p>Gebhardt said Panasonic is channeling resources toward digital cockpits and vehicle entertainment systems as self-driving vehicles become more in reach.</p><p>"If the scenario says the car drives itself, it's similar to sitting in an airplane seat because you're no longer actively driving," he said. "We see that as an evolution of the space that's quite interesting going forward that has infinite possibilities for us."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/591f337d63914743008b5122-957/screen shot 2017-01-03 at 41730 pm.png" alt="FCA portal concept" /><p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">Fiat Chrysler's portal concept.</p><p>As an extension of that plan, Panasonic recently worked with Fiat Chrysler on its semi-autonomous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fiat-chrysler-minivan-concept-car-ces-2017-photos-features-2017-1?utm_source=hearst&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=allverticals#/#with-a-dc-fast-charger-fca-said-the-electric-minivan-concept-can-charge-up-to-150-miles-in-just-20-minutes-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Portal concept car</a> shown off at CES in January. The concept featured electronics like an OLED touchscreen with facial and voice recognition.</p><p>Panasonic sees itself playing a role in fully autonomous cars as well by developing mobile offices or televisions specifically for self-driving cars, Gebhardt said.</p><p>Perhaps more notable is Panasonic's relationship with Telsa.</p><p>As one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world, competing with the likes of LG Chem and Samsung SDI, Panasonic had an easy entry into the electric vehicle space. The company plans to invest $1.6 billion in Tesla's Gigafactory.</p><p>"The future is definitely electric, no question in my mind, it's more of, 'what is the future timeline?' Is it 10 years, 15 years, 40 years?" Gebhardt said. "We don't see an alternative more interesting that, it's just a matter of what the adoption hits at the scale that makes this a slam dunk."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/586c9ab7ee14b61b008b6588-903/screen shot 2016-12-22 at 85952 am.png" alt="Tesla gigafactory" /><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F9ON-8rSnM&amp;feature=youtu.be">YouTube/Matthew Roberts</a></span></p><p class="caption">Tesla's massive battery plant, the Gigafactory, in Sparks, Nevada.</p><p>But, there are hurdles to overcome in both these spaces.</p><p>From the connected vehicle side, consumer adoption of infotainment systems is still lagging. J.D. Power led a 2016 study that found that more than 50% of car owners <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/people-opt-to-use-cell-phones-over-infotainment-consoles-in-cars-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">never used</a> their in-vehicle displays after 90 days of purchase, preferring the ease of using their smartphones.</p><p>But the tech is still in its first-generation, Gebhardt said, adding adoption will improve with the technology.</p><p>Google's new Android display, for example, will integrate its smart voice assistant to encourage usage while driving.</p><p>"Any time you're dealing with a first generation product, a user is not going to be overly comfortable," he said.</p><p>As for electric cars, vehicle adoption in the US is still tepid, and global sales hover at 1%.</p><p>Gebhardt acknowledged adoption is slow in the US, particularly due to low gas prices - a trend that is likely to persist if Trump comes through on his promise to roll back fuel emissions standards. He said, however, that this is likely a "short-term problem."</p><p>While the US market is slow to progress, there's still hope when it comes to China, which is making a concerted effort to incentivize battery-powered vehicles.</p><p>China "being the largest car market in the world has a big influence on what will happen," Gebhardt said. "If they adopt in a big way, that changes the balance of where electric is today versus where it will be going."</p><p>Panasonic has made some heavy investments in nascent areas, but expects to see a return on investment soon.
