In the <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> business, everyone is familiar with a commercial for the French TV company Canal+, titled "The Bear." Created by ad agency BETC Paris, it stars a bearskin rug who, having seen a lot of movies on TV from his spot on the living room floor, becomes a movie director himself in the egotastic style of Stanley Kubrick.
This commercial is now, officially, the best TV ad of all time, according to The Gunn Report, which tracks advertising awards. <a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/gunn-report-betcs-bear-most-awarded-spot-146904">Adweek notes that the ad has received more industry awards</a> than any other single piece of work in the Gunn Report's history.
Released in 2011, it has been viewed 1 million times on YouTube but, obviously, has never aired in any of the larger TV markets in the English-speaking West because it's for a French brand. (The ad itself is a mix of English and subtitles.) It is absolutely hilarious.

Also of note is this billboard for Samsonite, titled "Heaven &amp; Hell." Made by JWT Shanghai, it is the most awarded print ad ever, the Gunn Report says. It's very big, and very detailed. Kennedy Airport every day. By passenger volume, it's the US's largest international airport of entry. And in just Terminal 4 alone, that equates to almost 1,000 bags an hour. And in those suitcases, there's a lot of stuff, some of which isn't allowed into the country, including 120 pounds of food per day. So what happens to all those confiscated items anyway?If you flew in to JFK in the '90s, getting something into the US was a lot easier. But after 9/11, a conversation started about how to protect the country from dangerous foods, drugs, and people. And US Customs and Border Protection, as it's known today, was formed.You'll generally see two kinds of CBP officials at airports: officers, like Steve, and agriculture specialists, like Ginger. Their job is to find, seize, and destroy millions of items each year that don't belong in the United States. It's a big job, and sometimes it requires a sidekick, a sidekick on four legs.Steve Robinson: This is Canine Spike. Look, Spike. He is an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois. I've been his only handler from day one. He's trained in narcotics. During the duration of our career, probably seized over 400 different seizures.Narrator: CBP officials like Steve identify high-risk individuals trying to enter into the US, as well as drugs and firearms. And because these are such high stakes, dogs like Spike are trained in a special way, in what's called "passive response," meaning if they sniff out drugs, they don't scratch, they don't bark, and they don't make a scene. They sit. And if they're right, the dog gets rewarded.Robinson: His reward is actually this toy right here. So he likes to play, so. Ain't that right? You like to play! You like to play! Yes you do! Yes you do! Let me see it! Let me see it! Here at the port, we've caught up to 16 keys of ecstasy recently.Narrator: Narcotics are then seized and sent to be incinerated. The incinerator's location is kept a secret, as a matter of national security. Now, pretty much everyone knows that narcotics aren't allowed through US borders, but actually, drugs aren't the most commonly seized item at JFK. Food is.When a regular traveler arrives in the US, they're required to declare any food items they're bringing in, or face up to a $1,000 fine for the first offense. These items aren't taken because agents want to eat your yummy Spanish ham or Caribbean mangos. It's because agents are responsible for protecting American agriculture from any foreign pests or diseases that could affect our livestock or crops. And that's where agricultural specialists like Ginger come in.Ginger Perrone: Everything gets destroyed to protect against that pest risk. We are protecting the country's agricultural interests. We're protecting against bioterrorism, where someone could intentionally try to bring in items to wreak havoc in this country.Narrator: Foreign bugs hitchhiking in luggage have wreaked havoc in the US before. Florida's orange and grapefruit growers lost $2.9 billion from 2007 to 2014 thanks to the Asian citrus psyllid. And since being introduced into the US in the '90s, the Asian longhorned beetle has ravaged hardwood trees. Eradication efforts between 1997 and 2010 cost more than $373 million.James Armstrong: In our country, we go into the grocery store and the food is always there. We don't have to look at it for holes or check if it's got some disease on it. It always looks great, so we get kind of spoiled, and we don't really understand the importance of protecting that.Narrator: So it's crucial that even a single stowaway orange is found and confiscated. But with 34 million annual international passengers to and from JFK, going through each of those bags can seem pretty impossible. For humans, that is. Luckily, they've got a little help from the Beagle Brigade.This four-legged officer is Biscuit, and like Spike, Biscuit is trained in passive response. But Biscuit's trained to sniff out food rather than drugs.Sal DiSpigna: They actually learn. They start out with five target odors, and then over the years he'll expand, and they retire with sometimes, like, 150 odors that they know.Narrator: And Biscuit's pretty good at sniffing. These beagles have an estimated 90% accuracy rate.Armstrong: Watching your dog sit on three grapes in a Samsonite hardside suitcase is just incredible. Scientists say their nose is 1,000 times stronger than ours. And they prove it every single day.Narrator: Once Biscuit sniffs out an item, the passenger in question and their bags go to Ginger, who will X-ray and search the luggage.Perrone: OK, these are both your bags, correct?Man: Yes.Perrone: OK, did you pack everything yourselves?Man: What?Perrone: You packed your bags yourself?Man: We packed both. Perrone: OK.Narrator: Ginger unzips the bag and searches each one by hand. And if she finds something that's not allowed, it's seized and held in temporary bins.Perrone: This is very common from that region. Once you open it all up, you have grape leaves. These are horse-meat sausages. This is another very good example of what we get very frequently, especially in the springtime: This is a plant that they're planning on bringing here to grow. So anything for propagation has additional entry requirements. So this is two families' worth from one flight.Narrator: JFK disposes of the contraband food in one of two ways: the grinder, or the incinerator. Ginger will bag up the seized items and label them based on their final destination.Perrone: So we're gonna go walk this bin, nice and full from those two passengers, down to our contraband room.Narrator: This is the room where illicit food meets its end.Perrone: This is our grinding machine. This is what we'll generally use for fruits, vegetables, that kind of commodities. It is called the "Muffin Monster."Narrator: But before Ginger can send a piece of fruit down the Muffin Monster, she cuts it open, squishes it, and inspects it. She's looking for evidence of diseases, insertion points for insects, and exit points for larvae. If she finds a little bug, like this one, she neutralizes the pest risk and sends it to the US Department of Agriculture for further investigation.Now it's back to the Muffin Monster: 120 pounds of food are grinded up each day from arriving international passengers. Avocados, mangos, and citrus are among the most common fruits that end up in the grinder.Perrone: We do get messy. It's important to dispose of it properly. I love to eat, as much as everybody else. I am a big fan of food. But I know the importance of making sure that what we seized, because of established risks, is disposed of properly to prevent it from causing problems.Narrator: So the next time you've got an orange tucked into your luggage, declare it, and let experts like Ginger decide if it's admissible. "This was the first time that we showed the Colombians that you could take huge amounts of cocaine and drop it into the United States via air and also there was a huge market there for it," Jung <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/drugs/interviews/jung.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told PBS</a>, saying they generated millions of dollars in a matter of days."Within a couple of years they were importing the drug by the ton, hooking up with Pablo Escobar's Medellín cartel in Colombia to send planeloads of cocaine to the United States via Norman's Cay, a small island in the Bahamas that they used as their base," Wainwright <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Narconomics-How-Run-Drug-Cartel/dp/1610395832" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">writes</a>.Escobar sat at the head of the one of the most expansive criminal empires the world has ever seen. At its peak in the 1980s, his cartel was supplying <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pablo-escobar-el-chapo-graphic" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">80% of the world's cocaine</a>, moving <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pablo-escobar-el-chapo-graphic" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">15 tons of it into the US</a> every day. It's thought he was bringing in as much as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pablo-escobar-el-chapo-graphic" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$420 million a week</a>.Jung and Lehder both became more deeply involved in the cocaine trade, but they eventually parted ways. Lehder, in Jung's telling, became more unstable."He wasn't crazy… he had delusions, though. He loved John Lennon and Adolf Hitler at the same time. That should have been a sign for me," Jung said in an <a href="http://hightimes.com/culture/music/the-high-times-interview-george-jung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">interview</a> with High Times. Two guys in a Connecticut jail cell helped change the way America does drugs

That's the world that <a href="https://www.awaytravel.com/" target="_blank">Away</a> wants to provide with its line of modern, durable suitcases. The New York-based startup - which launched in early 2016 - aims to create "the perfect suitcase." The company makes carry-on bags and full-size suitcases, along with accessories like luggage tags and <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> blankets.So what is the perfect suitcase? And can it actually live up to the hype? I got to try one on a recent trip and found out for myself.<h2>Quick, easy charging </h2>I used Away's smallest model, the <a href="https://www.awaytravel.com/luggage/carry-on/sand" target="_blank">Carry-On</a>, on a five-day trip to the San Francisco area. The bag retails for $225, about $25 less than a Samsonite bag of approximately the same size. The option to charge my phone via my suitcase is one I never knew I wanted, but now can't imagine living without.As someone who frequently lets my phone's battery run down all the way, but also loves the convenience of having my boarding pass on my phone, being able to charge up my phone while waiting for my flight - and not being tethered to the wall - was crucial, and helped make my travel experience almost seamless.The bag has two USB ports hidden underneath the retractable handle which allow you to charge an iPhone up to five times and an iPad more than once.Away includes a cable to recharge the suitcase's built-in battery and a screwdriver if you want to remove the battery completely. The company recommends you do this if traveling to Asia, as customs officials can be more strict. It's worth noting that Away is one of several options for so-called "smart luggage," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/raden-makes-smart-suitcases-2016-8/#heres-the-outside-of-radens-store-in-soho-in-new-york-city-1">with Raden</a> and Bluesmart One also selling device-charging bags.<h2>An 'impenetrable' exterior</h2>Before leaving, I set a goal for myself: I would only bring the Away bag and try not to overpack. That turned out to be surprisingly easy thanks to the bag's flexible outer shell.All of Away's bags have the same exterior: a plastic, scratch-resistant surface that won't break under pressure. In fact, Away describes the outside of the bag as "impenetrable." <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image">Avery Hartmans/Business InsiderThe smaller carry-on size measures about 22 inches tall, which means it easily fits into nearly all overhead bins.</div></div></div>That came in handy while transporting my bag everywhere from the New York City subway to the overhead bins on a very full JetBlue flight. It was durable enough to hold up while traversing Grand Central Station and flexible enough that I could stuff it in the bins worry-free.And after five days of travel, my bag came home without a scratch.The flexibility also aids in packing. Of any suitcases I've packed in, Away's was the easiest, since I was able to stuff clothes and shoes in without worrying about it putting stress on the zippers. Plus, I was able to push down on the outer shell as much as I wanted without worrying about putting stress on the plastic. <h2>The interior</h2>While nothing about the interior of the bag is revolutionary, it is cleverly designed. One side of the bag is intended for shoes and other harder objects like toiletries, while the other side is meant for clothes and soft items.Every bag comes with a detachable laundry bag that's folded inside a small pocket and can be unrolled, filled, and attached to the inside of the suitcase with a metal snap. Each bag also has a stiff pocket that can be used to store a laptop, tablet, or book, and doubles as a means to tamp down your clothes. As a chronic over-packer, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was able to fit inside the suitcase (three pairs of pants, six tops, two sweaters, two pairs of shoes, and much more). It's deceptively spacious inside and could have served me well even if I was traveling for a full week. And even fully packed, the bag is super-lightweight. CYBER MONDAY: Upgrade Your Winter Wardrobe Today

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The Chinese inbound tourists in 2013 have become the first nationality of visitors to South Korea, ahead of the Japanese, and accounted for more than 35% of total visitors. Economics and currency haven't helped the Japanese flows-notably a weak yen has hurt-but political tensions have probably not been great either. As reported by the Chosun Ilbo, Chinese visitors now fuel the economy of resort island Jeju, and virtually all restaurants on the island now have a menu in Chinese. Regardless of yen fluctuations and political tensions (or lack of), there is probably no changing the fact that Chinese will dominate Korean tourism now.
It's clear that Korea is to a certain extent the new Japan, the new land of the cool. Talk to Western expats in Hong Kong and ask them where they go on weekends or weeklong trips: mostly the so-called LVMC countries (Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia) as well as Thailand.
Ask Hong Kong or Chinese colleagues where they go: they will mention Tokyo, Taiwan and Singapore but by far their favorite destination is almost invariably Seoul, Korea. Why? Because it's got what I would call the '4 Cs': clean (streets), close (destination), cuisine (reliable) and above all it's just cool. Cool in the sense that music, movies, soap operas, brands, the general vibe from Korea is really loved in the region. It's not rare to see youngsters who are not Korean listening to and dressing up like K-pop singers.
When I came back from trips to Laos or Myanmar, the two recurring questions my Asian colleagues asked were: 'Oh, right, is it clean? Is the food safe?' When I came back from Seoul, they just said: 'Cool, right?'
I have also met Chinese inhabitants of third-tier cities who learn Korean before they think about learning English.
And in late 2013-early 2014, Saint Laurent lipsticks, Burberry trench coats and Samsonite Red (the casual sub-label of the suitcase giant) bags were out of stock in Korea and some parts of China, as the products had been used as product placements in some of the greatest Korean soap opera successes, such as My Love from the Star and Reply 1994.
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>From a consumer point of view, if you don't know Seoul but have been to Japan and thought the Japanese were the most spoilt consumers in terms of choice for consumer goods, think again. Not only does Korea carry all of the international brands in a broad distribution footprint, but also there are a multitude of very edgy, very relevant local Korean brands doing well.
To get the better deals on both imported and local brands, the Chinese spend mainly in the duty-free channel in airports and more importantly in downtown locations, notably in Seoul's Lotte Department store duty-free section and at Shilla Duty Free. Regulations have made it difficult for foreign duty-free operators to develop in the duty-free market in Korea for now, although a third concession will be up for grabs in 2018 in Incheon airport.
Incheon is both the international airport that serves the capital, Seoul-the largest city in the developed world, with more than 10 million inhabitants-and also the third South Korean city in its own right, with close to 3 million people.
The duty-free market is dominated by a quasi-duopoly between Lotte Duty Free, part of the Lotte group that owns the department stores, and Hotel Shilla. In 2013, the two controlled about 80% of duty-free sales, or around KRW 5 trillion in sales (close to USD5 billion). About KRW 1.5 trillion of that was made by luxury goods alone (close to USD1.5 billion).
This means the duty-free channel alone probably represents not far from 40% of the total luxury goods market in Korea.
Why so much? For a long time, the Japanese represented the biggest clients and were big spenders. Now the Chinese dominate tourism, and they are even bigger spenders. The good thing for <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword>ers is that the Japanese spend a lot on high-end accommodation whereas the Chinese spend less on hotels and more on retail.
Looking at Shilla's split of sales by nationality-more than a third of sales with the Chinese-it seems that the shift from Japanese to Chinese shoppers has taken place quickly.
The substantial increase of Chinese inbound travel in Korea had led to the funniest (or you might say saddest) developments one can think of. As odd as it may sound, there is a project to develop a number of locations in downtown areas for 'foreigners only'. The aim is to tap into the Chinese potential, counter the opening of Chinese duty-free areas in China itself-as in China's island Hainan (avatar Lewis Wang calls it the 'Chinese Hawaii')-and answer the complaint amongst foreigners that Korean downtown duty-free locations were crowded with too many . . . Korean consumers.
Surprise comes full circle when the project includes the obligation to carry not 30% but 40% of Korean products. In other words, you please the Chinese tourists by offering more, cool Korean products but, if possible, with fewer Koreans in the store actually shopping there.
A travel law was implemented late 2013 for all tour operators, banning shopping tour programs from charging extra and demanding tips. According to the Chosun Ilbo, Korea's biggest travel agency, Hana Tour saw the number of Chinese tourists it handled go from 10,000 in September to 4,000 in October 2013. But selfishly, looking at the luxury shoppers, this law has not massively affected shopping on the high end.
Indeed, in a move that is a bit like raising minimum bets in Macau, monitoring group travel means you will retain more 'qualified' shoppers for the sector. As long as Korean culture and corporations continue to influence consumers across the Asian region (and sometimes beyond), the duty-free market in luxury should continue to thrive. Korea is by no means an emerging market for luxury if you look at local consumption, but it is still a vibrant one.
