A series of deaths of migratory birds in Sambhar Lake have put health and administrative officials under alarm. 520 migratory birds have died and 235 are ill in Rajasthan's Sambhar Lake. Ill birds, predominantly because of <keyword id="23882485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avian-botulism" source="keywords">Avian botulism</keyword> disease are being rescued and treated. Jeetu Kulhari said, "In 2019, a very large number of birds had died in Sambhar Lake. The day we got to know about it, we started working so that the disease does not spread among the birds. We keep a close watch on them every day. 520 birds have died. 235 birds are ill - we have rescued them and all of them are being treated. There is a team at the veterinary hospital as well. The team is also continuously engaged there. During this transportation of injured birds, about one or two of our birds who were in serious condition died during primary treatment." She further said that 10 teams were formed and sent for rescue operations in the lake. "Our teams are working very hard. It is our responsibility to save the birds which migrate here covering thousands of km. We need the support of locals," she added. The bodies of dead birds are being continuously taken out from the lake and disposed of, while the sick birds are being rescued and treated. The death of birds has now reduced, and the condition of sick birds is also improving rapidly. The death of migratory birds due to botulism has been confirmed in the investigation report from Bareilly lab. Botulism is a disease in which birds get paralyzed. Botulism is a serious neuromuscular disease, which is caused by a toxin produced by a bacterium called <keyword id="23883589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clostridium-botulism" source="keywords">Clostridium botulism</keyword>. This disease affects the nervous system of birds, causing paralysis of their wings and legs and the neck starts touching the ground. The bird gets paralyzed and is not in a position to stand, which leads to its death. Subdivision Officer, Navan Jeetu Kulhari said, "The process of finding dead birds in Sambhar Lake has been going on for the last 15 days. More than 1000 birds have fallen ill due to botulism. 50 members divided into 10 teams of SDRF, Animal Husbandry, Forest Department and Administration are engaged in rescue and relief operations in the lake area. Intensive rescue operations are going on in Mohanpura, Khakarki, Jabdi Nagar, Gudha Salt and Sambhar Salt areas of the lake area." Surveys are also being conducted using drones to rescue the birds. Dr. Rajendra Prasad veterinarian said, "Yesterday, 38 birds who had fully recovered were freed and released back into the lake. Currently, the treatment of 50 birds is going on in the rescue center."

Without a dramatic increase in water flow to the lake in 2023 and 2024, its disappearance could cause immense damage to Utah's public health, environment, and economy," an <a href="https://pws.byu.edu/great-salt-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emergency briefing</a> published by dozens of researchers in January warned.The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/utah-lost-ship-sunk-mysteriously-revealed-in-great-salt-lake-2022-12">Great Salt Lake</a>, the largest saltwater lake in the Western hemisphere, is a keystone ecosystem that supports thousands of local jobs and major industries, provides food and habitat for millions of birds, and suppresses toxic dust in the lakebed that gets exposed as the water levels recede.Sediments in the lake collect pollutants that come from human activity, such as mining or agriculture. Pollutants that have been detected in the lake include arsenic, lead, mercury, and other dangerous heavy metals. Once the soil is exposed and eroded by wind, the result is dust pollution that can lead to respiratory problems, chronic disease, cancer, and other health issues. When clouds of dust roll into Salt Lake City, they can make the air toxic.The Great Salt Lake is used for recreation, natural resource extraction, and <a href="https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/gsl/foodweb/brine_shrimp/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brine shrimp fishing</a>, a multimillion-dollar industry. It also serves as vital habitat for 10 million migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway. <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2022/05/21/dont-blame-farms-drying/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Agriculture</a> is the largest user of water in the Great Salt Lake watershed, accounting for 85%, according to the <a href="https://www.utahbusiness.com/what-to-do-about-the-great-salt-lake-drying-up/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Utah Rivers Council</a>.The scientists blamed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-fueled-droughts-unearthing-unexpected-discoveries-2022-7">excessive water use</a> for the historically low water levels, and warn that at the current rate "the lake as we know it is on track to disappear in five years." Lawmakers are working to pass a bill before then.One proposed bill would set an <a href="https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/HB0513.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emergency trigger</a> that would be activated when the lake reaches a certain level of salinity. As the water level lowers, salinity rises, killing food sources for birds and threatening the brine shrimp industry.Another <a href="https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/HB0538.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bans lawn watering</a> from October to April but was stripped of a provision that required all conserved water to go to the Great Salt Lake, as <a href="https://ksltv.com/528762/great-salt-lake-bill-advances-but-its-watered-down/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">local water districts</a> had emphasized the need to direct water into reservoirs for later use. And still another bill would create a <a href="https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/HB0491.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Great Salt Lake Commissioner</a> who would coordinate between different stakeholders to develop a plan to save the lake and have the power to implement it.Last year, state lawmakers passed a bill to direct <a href="https://le.utah.gov/~2022/bills/static/HB0410.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$40 million</a> into efforts to conserve the lake. The federal government also set aside $25 million to "assess, monitor and conserve" <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/1466/actions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saline lake ecosystems</a> in the Great Basin. But the emergency briefing released in January, which outlined recommendations for saving the lake, called for immediate action, not just further study."The decisions we make in the coming few months will affect our community and ecosystems across the hemisphere," <a href="https://www.fox13now.com/news/great-salt-lake-collaborative/researchers-environmental-groups-call-for-emergency-rescue-of-great-salt-lake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ben Abbott, an ecologist at Brigham Young University</a> and the lead author of the study, said in a press release.Abbott said the lake needs to be fed an extra million acre-feet of water per year to stave off its collapse, which would require a 30% to 50% reduction in water use across the state of Utah. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Kimberly Witt and her husband adopted their two sons from Ethiopia when the boys were eight and nine.</li><li>After enduring instances of <keyword id="44060" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Racism">racism</keyword>, the Witts moved from their small Iowa town to St. Paul, Minnesota, but they were still targeted.</li><li>The recent <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-man-george-floyd-dies-after-police-officer-kneels-neck-2020-5">racist incident in Central Park</a> in New York City and the <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-man-george-floyd-dies-after-police-officer-kneels-neck-2020-5">death of a black man in Minneapolis</a>, reminded Witt that her children won't be safe anywhere they move.</li></ul>It happened again. <a href="https://www.insider.com/central-park-woman-called-police-black-man-says-shes-not-racist-2020-5">This time in Central Park</a> in New York City. <keyword id="9294554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amy-cooper">Amy Cooper</keyword>, a white woman, called the police after a black man who was bird-watching asked her to leash her dog, which is the rule in that part of the park. In the now-famous video, Cooper called 911 and said an African American man was "threatening" her and her pet.That call could've taken a fatal turn, the way it did on Monday in Minneapolis, Minnesota — 11 miles from where we live. A <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-man-george-floyd-dies-after-police-officer-kneels-neck-2020-5">white officer </a>knelt on the neck of a black man, killing him at the scene. Cooper has since apologized. She <a href="https://www.insider.com/amy-cooper-surrendered-dog-animal-rescue-video-black-christian-2020-5">surrendered her dog to a shelter</a> and was let go<a href="https://www.insider.com/central-park-woman-police-call-video-apology-nbc-news-2020-5"> </a>from her job at an investment management firm. Like Christian Cooper, the black birder in Central Park (no relation to Amy Cooper), my older son eagerly spots orioles, finches, and warblers in our backyard trees. He developed his love for birds when he was in elementary school.For me, this all just means I have to add another fear to my growing list for my two sons: birding while black. For my young black sons, nearly every activity comes with an added level of danger.When my husband and I, who are white, became first-time parents to then eight- and nine-year-old brothers from Ethiopia, we were living in a predominantly white town in Iowa. Naively, we thought we were living in a post-racial society, that love was enough, and that our sons would thrive in our community. As our boys grew older, we learned they weren't safe from racism. Our agency did a fairly good job preparing us for many of the complications that come with <keyword id="6411790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adoption">adoption</keyword>, like facing the challenges that could result from early childhood trauma and maintaining connections with a birth family.But race issues were a different story.<h2>Before the adoption, we had a conversation with a white social worker about race </h2><div type="image" title="Witt family December 2012" height="477" width="636" msid="76042939" hostid="261"></div>We had one conversation about it with a white social worker and a quick training about tending to black hair and black skin. We weren't required or encouraged to talk with black adult adoptees or to connect with people of color in our own area. At the time, one black friend pointedly asked, "Are you going to raise them white?" But neither my husband nor I knew what that meant then. It became clear one summer afternoon, when a cop showed up at our door when my kids were 10 and 11. A city worker had called the police when he noticed a group of kids trying to see what was inside a storage shed in the park right near our home. The worker noted that a "couple of black kids" were involved. Because my children were among only a handful of children of color in the area, the person knew that our sons were a part of it. Our boys listened attentively, apologized for their actions, and promised to never do it again. Before the officer left, my husband pointed down the street to the house where the other boy who was involved lived. As we watched the officer pull out of the driveway, though, he turned the corner and headed in the opposite direction.My sons got a terrifying stern talking-to, and their friend didn't even get a knock on the door. I couldn't help but play out future worst-case scenarios in my mind.<h2>I started to fear for my kids when black children were mocked for not being 'white enough' to fit in</h2><div type="image" title="students lunch" height="1733" width="2311" msid="76042948" hostid="261"></div>My career as a high school English teacher gave me a grim fast-forward view of life for my sons if we stayed in our town. I saw non-white students get racially-charged nicknames, and get pigeon-holed for all of the ways they weren't "white enough" to be accepted.Catapulted by the 2016 election, we decided to move. My husband and I visited schools and interviewed for jobs in St. Paul, Minnesota, home to a vibrant Ethiopian community. We knew we had made the right decision, when — that spring, before our move— members of my school's track team in Iowa told a teammate to "go to the back of the bus" while also using the n-word. The move to St. Paul brought us more diversity in schools, neighborhood, church, and social groups. It also gave us better restaurant options, constant fresh injera — the delectable spongy bread we eat with Ethiopian dishes. We also got a vibrant arts and music scene. That didn't mean, however, that racism and ignorance disappeared. Several months after we settled in, our then-sixth grader went on a weeklong overnight trip with his class to an outdoor learning center in rural Minnesota. <h2>While on a school trip, another child told one of my sons to 'go back to Africa'</h2>Due to a scheduling issue, his class shared the facility with another school group from a rural district. Towards the middle of the week, our principal called to tell us about an incident.While eating lunch with his friends, a kid from the other school told my son to "go back to Africa." My sons' friends stood up for him and reported the incident immediately to the adults. The school and the facility handled the situation in the best possible way, providing steady, informed leadership that we didn't always receive in our small town. When my son called us that night, we were able to hear his voice and know that he felt safe and cared for. He was mostly uncomfortable with the unwanted attention. He came home with a bag full of stinky laundry and stories about adventures with friends, including a tipped canoe and glasses lost — and then later found — in the lake. It was a sad and powerful reminder that even a drastic change in geography couldn't do away with white supremacy. These sad and powerful reminders happen all too frequently for people of color in this country.<h2>Relocating helped, but we've realized our kids won't be totally safe anywhere</h2>Our move has made us all more comfortable, less conspicuous. While I know there is nowhere my sons can walk around completely safe in the US, I know that they've been empowered to own their racial identity in a way that never would have been possible where we lived in Iowa.Along with their friend groups, their music taste has diversified as well. My sons now have non-white coaches, youth group leaders, barbers, and doctors. They can walk with ease within their own culture.<div type="image" title="kids playing" height="3424" width="4565" msid="76042958" hostid="261"></div>Their beautiful Ethiopian names no longer elicit snickers and questions in every new setting. They are never the only black kid in any situation, and in many cases, those roles have been reversed. My husband and I are sometimes the only white fans cheering for our sons' sports teams. But when I hear of yet <a href="https://www.insider.com/ahmaud-arbery-shooting-killed-jogging-travis-gregory-mcmichael-georgia-justice-2020-5">another innocent black person killed,</a> or reported to the police, my heart stops again.I lie awake at night questioning over and over again if we made the right choice bringing children from Ethiopia, a country where the color of their skin doesn't feel like a death sentence.My fear is palpable, but I know it's a shadow of the fear my sons — and every other black person in this country — must carry around every day. I may be the mother of black sons, but I am still steeped in my own privilege. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is now spearheading <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/24/us/politics/senate-congress-disaster-aid-hurricanes-fire.html">$50 billion in relief efforts</a> after Harvey and other devastating hurricanes that hit Florida, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands this summer. Nevertheless, flood-prone cities like Houston are increasingly searching for ways to make themselves less vulnerable for the next inevitable hurricane.Clear Lake City (located around 20 miles southeast of downtown Houston) is transforming a shuttered 1960s-era golf course into a site that will help reduce flooding in the area. The Clear Lake City Water Authority is building <a href="http://www.clcwa.org/images/CLCWAmasterplan.pdf">five detention ponds</a> that will be able to hold half a billion gallons of stormwater - or around the same amount as 750 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The <a href="https://www.explorationgreen.org/about_us">Exploration Green Conservancy</a> (EGC), SWA Architects, and urban planners from <a href="http://www.lan-inc.com/">LAN</a> are also involved.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Stan CookOne of five massive stormwater detention ponds under construction in Clear Lake City, Greater Houston, Texas.</div></div></div>The $28 million project broke ground in early 2016 and will be complete by 2021. Only one of the ponds was 80% finished when Harvey hit, but it still prevented around 100 million gallons of water from flowing into the Houston area's drainage system, LAN's project manager, Kelly Shipley, told Business Insider. She estimates that the pond saved 200 nearby homes from flooding during the storm.When all five ponds are complete, Shipley says they will be able to protect approximately 2,000 houses in the event of another hurricane like Harvey. When water flows into the ponds, they hold back just the right amount as to not overwhelm Houston's pipes. The water later flows into the Armand Bayou, then Clear Lake, Galveston Bay, and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico.The site will also include a public park with 12 miles of trails as well as a protected wildlife area for native birds, butterflies, flora, and 5,000 re-planted trees.Before the Clear Lake City Water Authority bought the 200-acre golf course, its former owners wanted to turn it into condominiums, which would've likely made the area's flooding even worse. Over the past two decades, over 38,000 acres of wetlands have disappeared in greater Houston, according to <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Review-Developers-failing-to-follow-wetlands-6417918.php">a 2015 Houston Chronicle report</a>. Wetlands are areas that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-harvey-why-houston-flooded-2017-8">act like sponges</a> for excess water. Without them, a city like Houston becomes <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Houston-s-development-boom-and-reduction-of-8403838.php&amp;cmpid=twitter-premium">more prone to floods</a>. "There was a big grassroots movement that came out and said, 'We don't want more development here. We would like the green space. After Hurricane Sandy in 2012, New York City ramped up its climate resilience efforts by <a href="http://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/201-13/mayor-bloomberg-outlines-ambitious-proposal-protect-city-against-effects-climate-change">spending billions</a> in federal funds to guard subways, electrical facilities, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/15/nyregion/new-building-codes-passed-after-lessons-from-hurricane-sandy.html">buildings</a>, and wastewater treatment plants from stormwater.
