BJP set to return in UP with 'handsome win aided with pro-incumbency'

Sambhal (UP), May 19 () A Samajwadi Party leader and his son were shot dead in Shamshoi village here on Tuesday following a dispute over road construction, police said. There was a dispute over the construction of a road under the rural employment generation scheme MGNREGS in the village and Chhotelal Diwakar (50) and his son, Sunil Kumar (28), were shot dead, Superintendent of Police (SP) Yamuna Prasad said. The incident that took place under the Bahjoi police station area in Sambhal district, the police said. The bodies have been sent for autopsy and a case will be registered soon, the police officer said, adding that some people have been taken into custody for questioning. Former Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav condemned the incident and said Diwakar was a dedicated party worker. Diwakar was given the Samajwadi Party ticket from the Chandausi Vidhan Sabha seat in the 2017 assembly elections, but the seat later went to the SP's alliance partner. Yadav accused the BJP government in the state and the police of giving shelter to the criminals. "After the murder of our dedicated worker today, it has been a proved that police is sheltering the criminals, and members of the opposition party, specially the Samajwadi Party, are being targeted," he said. Ballia, Apr 13 () Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gobind Chaudhary Monday urged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to provide Rs 50-lakh insurance cover for journalists as they are "risking their lives" to keep people informed during the coronavirus outbreak. In the letter, dated April 13, the Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, has said that mediapersons work as a bridge between the government and the public, and to safeguarde "such warriors" is also a responsibility of the government. "Rs 50 lakh insurance cover for journalists belonging to print media, electronic media, magazines and news portals should be given," he said. The insurance benefit must cover accredited as well as non-accredited journalists, he said. "They risk their life and limb in making correct information available about various events." Badaun (UP), Apr 20 () A policeman was suspended on Monday for allegedly beating up of a farmer's son and two teenage daughters here for defying lockdown.The action against beat constable Kale Singh was taken after Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Tripathi ordered a probe into the matter.The incident took place in Utrarna village in Musajhag area here when Jitin, son of Satyapal Singh Yadav, was unloading hay from a tractor-trolley, according to the police complaint.Singh arrived there and began hitting Jitin but left when his family members intervened. However, he returned after some time with his colleagues, dragged Jitin out of his house and started thrashing him, it was alleged in the complaint. Jitin's two sisters - Shivani (14) and Shivali (18) - too were beaten by the police when they came to the rescue of their brother, the complaint said. The injured were hospitalised and their condition is stable. Taking note of the incident, Tripathi had directed Superintendent of Police (City) Jitendra Kumar Srivastava to probe the matter."The accused constable Kale Singh has been suspended. UP: Policeman who thrashed three siblings for defying lockdown suspended

New Delhi, In what could finally end the fortnight-long deadlock between <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> and the Indian government, the micro-blogging platform has either withheld or suspended at least 90-95 per cent <keyword id="6374937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="accounts">accounts</keyword> as directed by the IT Ministry in two <keyword id="10754859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="separate-notices">separate notices</keyword>, government sources confirmed on Friday. Among those whose accounts have been withheld include Sukhram Singh Yadav, a Rajya Sabha member and Samajwadi Party leader, and several politicians from the <keyword id="6354944" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aam-aadmi-party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> (AAP) and the Congress. "@MPSukhram's account has been withheld in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> in response to a legal demand," is the message posted on his account to users who access the page from India. This account, however, can be accessed from outside of the country. The company, facing penal action if does not comply with the directions given by the IT Ministry in three notices to block nearly 1,435 accounts in the wake of the farmers' protests, had earlier said that it withheld a portion of the accounts identified in the blocking orders under its 'Country Withheld Content' policy within India only. India had sought action against 1,435 accounts in two separate notices. The details of the accounts in question have not been made public yet. Twitter had said that it did not believe that the actions it has been directed to take by the IT Ministry are consistent with the Indian law. "In keeping with our principles of defending protected speech and freedom of expression, we have not taken any action on accounts that consist of news media entities, journalists, activists and politicians. To do so, we believe, would violate their fundamental right to free expression under Indian law," the micro-blogging platform had said in its blog post earlier this week. The Bill seeks to merge three Ayurveda institutes into one institution -- Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda. The Bill declares the institute to be an institution of national importance. The Bill was moved by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in the absence of Ayush Minister Sripad Naik, who is recovering from Covid-19. Harsh Vardhan said, "The ministry is giving deemed university status to the institutes in various parts of the country and the matter is referred to the UGC and Education Ministry." The Minister said that there are 103 institutes of national importance, but there was none in Ayurveda. He said the Jamnagar institute has been chosen because this is one of the oldest institutes of the country founded by the Government of India in 1956. Many MPs from the TRS, Bodoland People's Front, AIADMK, CPM, BSP and others demanded similar institutes in other states also. The Chairman, M. Venkiah Naidu, said, "The minister should take into consideration the demand of such institutes in every state." Congress leader L. Hanumanthiah raised objections during the discussion. He said, "Why Gujarat is given so much importance and Kerala should also be given prominence, which is a pioneer of the Ayurveda." While Thambidurai AIADMK member supported the Bill, he demanded a National Institute of Siddha in Tamil Nadu. Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal raised the issue of mental health and said House the mental counselling is needed in Covid times. RJD MP Manoj Jha demanded a regulator for the Ayurvedic medicines so that no misuse takes place. He cited the claims made by Ramdev that he has made medicine for Covid-19. The Bill seeks three institutes to be merged -- the Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Shree Gulabkunverba Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Jamnagar, and, the Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences, all in Jamnagar. The proposed Institute will be situated in the campus of Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar. The Institute will be developed on the patterns of teaching in medical education in Ayurveda and pharmacy, bring together educational facilities for training of personnel in all branches of Ayurveda, and attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate education to meet the need for specialists and medical teachers in Ayurveda, also make an in-depth study and research in the field of Ayurveda. The Bill provides that the Institute will consist of 15 members and the Director of the Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar will be appointed as the first Director of the Institute. The Bill states that there will be a Governing Body of the Institute, which will exercise powers and such functions of the Institute, as specified. Concurrently, the government is reluctant to raise the minimum support price to the extent mills want because it is hesitant about the effects on consumer prices. With around <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/agri-business/discontent-over-cane-arrears-simmers-in-uttar-pradesh/article26714192.ece">3.5 million</a> sugarcane farming households in UP, the issue has been a key point at rallies. At a rally earlier this week, Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/politics/at-baghpat-rally-jayant-chaudhary-praises-master-akhilesh-yadav-for-stitching-up-uttar-pradesh-grand-alliance-2093927.html">berated the state government</a> for its inability to settle sugarcane arrears. In fact, the issue was seen as one of the major reasons that the BJP lost <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/bjp-loses-kairana-ls-seat-suffers-reverses-in-assembly-bypolls-too/article24050560.ece">a bypoll election</a> in June last year for the Kairana constituency. However, the BJP-led government is reportedly moving ahead with a plan this week to reduce that burden by <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/up-cane-arrears-of-rs-10-000-crore-to-ease-by-40-as-polling-nears-119040900898_1.html">₹41 billion </a>through by directly releasing funds to private and state-owned mills as well as offering them soft loans through a central government scheme. Whether this will have an impact on the results of the election come counting day remains to be seen. What is clear though, is that this won’t have too positive an effect on the first phase of polling in UP. All of the eight seats in contention in the first week are in the Western region of the state, where <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/up-cane-arrears-of-rs-10-000-crore-to-ease-by-40-as-polling-nears-119040900898_1.html">around 60%</a> of the arrears are concentrated. However, the main mills in this region have reportedly been deemed ineligible for the scheme. Skepticism in voter’s minds will also be high, given that this isn’t the first time the UP government has tried to alleviate the problem. In September last year, it <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/lucknow/up-government-announces-slew-of-measures-for-sugar-mills-cane-farmers/story-fna4KUZBEgTXrCWcbgxnqI.html">set a deadline of end-November</a> for the state’s <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/sugarcane-belts-to-set-tone-for-lok-sabha-polls-in-uttar-pradesh-119031800061_1.html">94 private sugar mills</a> to settle dues after providing them with soft loans - which didn’t come to fruition.  "As per the directions of Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav), the expulsion of Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav has been revoked with immediate effect," Samajwadi Party leader <keyword id="269977" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivpal-Singh-Yadav">Shivpal Singh Yadav</keyword> tweeted. He also added that the party will fight assembly polls together. 
 
Earlier today, Akhilesh had met SP legislators where more than 200 MLAs out of 229 turned up and expressed their loyalty to him.

The chances of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/GST-vs-IT-Act/articleshow/52969390.cms">GST bill</a> finally getting passed seem to have increased with the leading and opposition parties getting ready to engage in further consultations over the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/All-online-purchases-to-attract-GST-soon-Amit-Mitra-panel/articleshow/52750627.cms">long pending bill</a>. 
 
As per reports, the parliamentary affairs ministry has planned a five-hour debate in Rajya Sabha, the date of which is not confirmed yet, which could lead to both parties agreeing to a common ground for the passage of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indian-online-marketplaces-are-closely-monitoring-the-GST-bill-as-costs-may-rise-up/articleshow/52775995.cms">tax reform</a>.

It was only after BJP expressed its hope for an agreement after lessening the differences it has with Congress that the BJP parliamentary party executive was asked to make efforts to reach out to other parties as well. 
 
A few days back, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal had complained that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nothing-is-going-to-come-for-free-after-GST-is-implemented-Heres-why/articleshow/52775662.cms">GST bill</a> seemed to be like a bilateral affair between the two parties, and warned that even his party could have some issues with the legislation, stalling it. CPM leader Sitaram Yechury had also asked for more consultations over the bill.

In a shocking incident, several women were molested during New Year's celebrations in Bengaluru. 
 
Many women were assaulted by a mob in Bengaluru on December 31st night. Videos flashed on many news channels, showing how men were deliberately trying to fall on girls, groping them. 
 
Following this incident, many women rights activists have sprung into action, demanding investigation. So far, no arrests have been made. 
Police said they are going through the CCTV footage but have not received any complaints of sexual assault. 
 
Amid all this, our leaders have, once again, made several sexist remarks, putting the blame on women. 
 Samajwadi Party leader from Maharashtra <keyword id="69005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abu-Asim-Azmi">Abu Asim Azmi</keyword> and Karnataka Home Minister <keyword id="6361527" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="G-Parameshwara">G Parameshwara</keyword> have made insensitive remarks, blaming women for dressing up provocatively. 
 
Azmi said, “In today's world, the more a woman is nude, the more she is considered modern and educated. Such things are on rise in the country. Western culture is a black spot on country's culture and it should be stopped at the earliest. And we need to focus on out famous Indian culture.” 
 
Even though Azmi’s party has distanced itself from the remarks, the leader has no remorse. 
 
“If my sister is going outside home after sunset with a boy to celebrate New Year, it cannot be expected that people will behave with her in a respectable manner. Many people may get disappointed with my remarks but I don't care. And this is the fact. I am not against the freedom to women but we need to take precaution,” said Azmi. 
 
Women rights group have condemned his remark, demanding an apology and his expulsion from the party. 
 
Meanwhile, Parameshwara said, “We had deployed 1500 police personnel in the area for new year's celebrations. Such incidents do happen on New Year day and on Christmas. We take a lot of precautions.”

The chargesheet has been filed under various sections of IPC, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc.), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) and 505 (false statement, rumour, etc. circulated with intent to cause mutiny or offence against the public peace), and Section 123-3 of Representation of People Act (making an appeal to vote on the grounds of religion amounting to corrupt practice). 
 Shah had allegedly said that the 2014 <keyword id="43815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-election">Lok Sabha election</keyword> was an opportunity to seek "revenge for the insult" meted out during the riots in Muzaffarnagar in 2013. Shah's political opponents accuse him of using communal tension to electoral advantage, which he has denied. The ruling <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> leader <keyword id="6355085" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azam-Khan">Azam Khan</keyword> was also under fire for similar charges.
