The CBI on Friday arrested former <keyword id="6653" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="Orion">ICICI Bank</keyword> CEO and MD <keyword id="45875" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chanda-kochhar" source="Orion">Chanda Kochhar</keyword> and her husband <keyword id="2621036" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="deepak-kochhar" source="Orion">Deepak Kochhar</keyword> in connection with alleged cheating and irregularities in loans sanctioned by the bank to <keyword id="6379256" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="videocon-group" source="Orion">Videocon Group</keyword> companies, officials said. They said the Kochhars were called to the agency headquarters and arrested after a brief questioning session. The CBI has alleged that they were evasive in their responses and did not cooperate in the investigation. The Kochhars will be produced before a special CBI court on Saturday. They are likely to be kept in separate lockups on the ground floor of the 11-storeyed agency headquarters after their medical examination. Sources said that agency is likely to move at a swift pace to file the first charge sheet in the case in which the Kochhars could be named along with Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon Group. The CBI had named the Kochhars and Dhoot, along with companies <keyword id="3152077" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nupower-renewables" source="Orion">Nupower Renewables</keyword> (NRL) managed by Deepak Kochhar, Supreme Energy, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Limited, as accused in the FIR registered under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2019, they said. The CBI had alleged that <keyword id="42456" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icici" source="Orion">ICICI</keyword> bank had sanctioned credit facilities to the tune of Rs 3,250 crore to the companies of Videocon Group promoted by Dhoot in violation of the Banking Regulation Act, RBI guidelines, and credit policy of the bank. It was also alleged that as a part of the quid pro quo, Dhoot made an investment of Rs 64 crore in Nupower Renewables through Supreme Energy Pvt Ltd (SEPL) and transferred SEPL to Pinnacle Energy Trust managed by Deepak Kochhar through a circuitous route between 2010 and 2012, the FIR has alleged. It is alleged that during the tenure of Chanda Kochhar at ICICI Bank, six loans worth Rs 1,875 crore were cleared for the Videocon Group and its associated companies during 2009-11. In two cases, she was on the sanctioning committees. Chanda Kochhar was on the sanctioning committee deciding two loans -- Rs 300 crore to Videocon International Electronics Limited (VIEL) on August 26, 2009, and Rs 750 crore to Videocon Industries Limited on October 31, 2011 -- the FIR has alleged. The loans were issued in alleged violation of laid-down policies and regulations of the bank, it alleged. Most of these loans became non-performing assets, causing a loss of Rs 1,730 crore to the bank, it alleged. A day after the Rs 300-crore loan was disbursed by ICICI Bank to VIEL, Dhoot transferred Rs 64 crore to Nupower Renewables, managed by Deepak Kochhar, on September 8, 2009, it alleged. The transfer of Rs 64 crore was made from Videocon Industries Ltd through SEPL. "This was the first major capital received by NRL (Nupower Renewables) to acquire the first power plant. Chanda Kochhar got illegal gratification, undue benefit through her husband from VIL/VN Dhoot for sanctioning Rs 300 crore loan to VIEL," the FIR alleged. On May 1, 2009, Chanda Kochhar took over the charge of ICICI Bank as Managing Director and CEO. Here's who's speaking at America's college graduations this year

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Andrew Wylie, one of the most powerful literary agents in the world, has compared Amazon to the Islamic State, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/30/andrew-wylie-amazon-isis-like-distribution-channel" target="_blank">saying that the ebook retailer "is sort of a ISIS-like distribution channel,"</a> the Guardian reports. 
Wylie, who can name Salman Rushdie and Philip Roth among his clients, <a href="http://ifoa.org/events/keynote-state-industry-matters-writers" target="_blank">was speaking at the International Festival of Authors (IFOA) in Toronto, Canada,</a> on Oct. 27.
In a Q&amp;A session after his speech, he turned his attention to Amazon's Jeff Bezos accusing him of having "taken the business and distorted it radically." He went on to predict a gloomy future for the online store, saying that soon the readers will realize how bad Amazon is and it "is going to be buried."
Amazon was not directly available to comment.
<a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/02/17/cheap-words?currentPage=all" target="_blank">This is not the first time Wylie has criticized the world's biggest online bookstore</a>, although he tried to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000528381" target="_blank">collaborate with Amazon in 2010 through one of his publishing houses, Odyssey</a>. 
Publisher Weekly reports that <a href="http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/64549-wylie-backs-hachette.html" target="_blank">he previously took a public stance in defending Hachette in a dispute</a> against Amazon, while encouraging his colleagues to "stand firm" against the company.
The fight between Amazon and old-school publishers is a old one: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/publishers-should-stop-working-with-amazon-2014-10" target="_blank">Publishers say the online retailer just care about selling the books</a> and not their literary significance. 
Earlier this month, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/20/opinion/paul-krugman-amazons-monopsony-is-not-ok.html?_r=0" target="_blank">compared Amazon to the early 20th century oil drillers like J.D. One Of The World's Leading Publishers Called Amazon An 'ISIS-Like Distribution Channel'

Since December, Facebook has charged many users in the US <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-message-filters-1-2012-12">$1 to message strangers' inboxes directly.</a> The charge is part of a "test" to improve filtering of unwanted messages, according to <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/News/558/Update-to-Messaging-and-a-Test">a Facebook announcement.</a>
Users can also have their messages delivered to those with a high number of 'Followers' — generally the profiles of public figures and celebrities. The pay-to-message system was <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/9977718/Facebook-tests-new-payment-system-to-charge-users-for-messaging.html">expanded to the UK yesterday.</a>
Facebook explains that <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/facebooks-paytomessage-service-puts-a-price-tag-on-all-our-heads-8566021.html">several price points</a> are being tested. The cost of sending a message is partly dependent on the receipient 's level of fame, which Facebook calculates with <a href="http://mashable.com/2013/04/08/facebook-pay-to-message-celebs/">a secret algorithm.</a> (UPDATE: Yesterday, a Facebook representative told us that the price points are based on follower numbers).
The Facebook rep also told us that $15 is the highest testing price in the US, but that "prices are not set in stone." Snoop Dogg (aka Snoop Lion), Arianna Huffington, and Salman Rushdie can all be contacted at this price. They can only receive one paid message per week.

Yesterday, Olympic swimmer Tom Daley could be messaged at $15.90, but now there is no charge associated with his inbox (all messages sent to Mr. Daley will be filtered to his 'Other' message box). REUTERS/Carlos Barria" height="1443" width="2885" msid="76842765" hostid="261"></div></h2>Enough moralizing about companies that accepted the government's emergency loans.The US government finally released some details about the distribution of its emergency "Paycheck Protection Program" — specifically, which companies it gave money to and how much. This disclosure is good: The <keyword id="6361580" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="ppp">PPP</keyword> is taxpayer money, and taxpayers have a right to know where it went.But the disclosure has also triggered a wave of moralizing about which companies accepted the loans and whether they should have or not. Some companies weren't deserving of the money, the complainers say, either because they're owned by rich people or because they weren't as badly off as other companies. So they shouldn't have accepted it.This moralizing is unfair and silly.The PPP was designed to reduce the number of people laid off as a result of the pandemic and lockdowns. It did that. You can quibble with the design and execution of the program — it might have been better for the government to just pay a portion of employees' salaries for a while, for example, as <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/sunak-unveils-support-for-workers-self-employed">some governments in Europe did</a>. The rollout of the program could have been smoother and fairer, including with more stringent means-testing. Those complaining that companies owned by "billionaires" got funding should consider that the companies might still have chosen to fire people had they not been eligible.But bashing companies for taking money and maintaining their payrolls misses the point of the program.If the government had not doled out about <a href="https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/ppp-loan-statistics-through-june-6-2020-45420/">$500 billion to 4.5 million US businesses</a>, the already horrific layoffs in the US would have been far worse. The program was explicitly designed to give companies the incentive and means not to fire people, and it did that. You know that Amy Cooper is the Central Park dogwalker who called the cops on a Black birdwatcher, and the fact that we don't need to explain that is why she shouldn't be criminally charged. What Amy Cooper did was despicable, and could easily have endangered the life and freedom of birdwatcher Christian Cooper. She absolutely should be punished. And she has been punished, as this <a href="https://twitter.com/jduffyrice/status/1280213555745259520">thread from the brilliant Josie Duffy-Rice</a> explains. Amy Cooper lost her job, her anonymity, and her reputation. Unless she invents a COVID vaccine, that 60 seconds in Central Park will be the first line of her obituary. The American carceral system is a catastrophe, and we should aspire to keep people out of it. If wrongdoers can be punished with public shame and economic consequences, that should satisfy us. Sending Amy Cooper to jail is punitive. It won't do society any good. Her public humiliation already taught us the lesson we needed to learn. — DPPresident Trump is losing the culture war. From his Mount Rushmore speech to his tweets about Black NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, the president is trying to agitate his base with racial grievance.He's doing this for two reasons. He's convinced it will help him win re-election, since the strategy worked in 2016. As importantly, he clearly enjoys it. If there's any consistency to Trump over the past five years, it's that he takes such glee in fomenting division, especially racial division. But maybe it won't work this time. The broader American public <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/7/5/21313762/trump-mount-rushmore-speech-independence-day">increasingly values the Black Lives Matter movement</a>. Also important is what <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/07/opinion/trump-mount-rushmore-culture-war.html">columnist Jamelle Bouie notes</a> today, which is that white Americans are comfortable voting for racial grievance when they feel economically secure, but demand competence and calm during a crisis. (As Bouie recalls, Sarah Palin's thrilling proto-Trumpism failed badly in 2008 in the face of a global economic collapse.) Donald Trump has neither. — DPPolitically diverse writers and artists co-sign a letter in support of "The free exchange of information and ideas."Harper's magazine today published "<a href="https://harpers.org/a-letter-on-justice-and-open-debate/">A Letter on Justice and Open Debate</a>," co-signed by over 140 writers, artists, and luminaries of impressively-diverse <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword>.Their message is an affirmation of the "need to preserve the possibility of good-faith disagreement without dire professional consequences." Essentially, that provocative, even unpopular opinions and arguments shouldn't lead to career cancellations. The co-signers express their support for the "Powerful protests for racial and social justice" that "are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society." China's internet is famous for its surveillance and self-censorship, for being a place where netizens are forced to speak in code to criticize the government. Hong Kongers have already started picking up that double speak to protect themselves, and it's unclear how long US internet companies will stick around to be a party to repressive activity they don't support on the mainland. Stop trying to shame companies that took PPP loans

In February 2006 French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published a series of 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad which had been featured in the Nordic daily&#xa0;Jyllands-Posten the previous year. The Danish publication triggered anti-Danish protests across the Muslim world. It was the start of the story that would ultimately lead to the magazine becoming a prime terrorist target.
Twelve people were <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/photo-and-video-of-charlie-hebdo-shooters-in-paris-2015-1">shot dead at the Charlie Hebdo office</a> today. 
Depictions of the prophet are strictly taboo in Islam. The&#xa0;French Council of Muslim Faith (CFCM) and the Grand Mosques of Paris and Lyon had unsuccessfully attempted to sue Charlie Hebdo to prevent publication of the images on the grounds that they were offensive to France's Muslim community.
Their failure, however, led to much more serious repercussions. 
As the debate over the publication of the images intensified in France, a group of 12 prominent writers including Salman Rushdie and&#xa0;Bernard-Henri Levy&#xa0;<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4764730.stm">published an article in Charlie Hebdo speaking out against Islamic "totalitarianism"</a>. They wrote:
"Like all totalitarian ideologies, Islamism is nurtured by fear and frustration...Islamism is a reactionary ideology that kills equality, freedom and secularism wherever it is present."
By publicly denouncing Islamism, the magazine became a target of threats forcing some&#xa0;staff to be placed under police protection. But the attempt at intimidation failed. In fact, it had the opposite effect, emboldening the magazine's staff.
In 2011, the magazine named the Prophet Muhammad as its "editor-in-chief." The cover once again carried a cartoon depicting him making a glib remark.
This time, however, the response was not just threats. A day after its publication <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15550350">the offices of the magazine were firebombed</a> and its website hacked. Fortunately, no-one was injured.
Stephane Charbonnier, the magazine's editor-in-chief, responded as robustly as ever.
He said: "If we can poke fun at everything in France, if we can talk about anything in France apart from Islam or the consequences of Islamism, that is annoying."
In response he set out to publish the most controversial editions yet. They first produced an issue with the cover showing a man dressed in traditional Muslim garb passionately kissing a Charlie Hebdo cartoonist.
This was then followed up by a cover showing a Muslim man in a wheelchair pushed by an Orthodox Jew under the title&#xa0;"Untouchables 2",&#xa0;<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/">an imaginary sequel to a recently released French film</a>. The pair are saying (rough translation) "You must not mock us!". 
The publication was condemned by the French foreign minister&#xa0;Laurent Fabius as a "provocation". The French government was so concerned&#xa0;about the possibility of a backlash in Muslim countries, following the response to the 2006 cartoons, that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/france-plans-to-close-20-embassies-after-charlie-hebdo-publishes-mohammed-cartoon-2012-9?IR=T">it decided to&#xa0;temporarily closed 20 embassies as a precaution</a>.
Yet Charlie Hebdo was not done yet. In 2013 the magazine went further still, publishing what it called a "halal" comic book on the life of Islamic prophet Mohammad. The book was created with&#xa0;the help of a Islamic Franco-Tunisian sociologist and&#xa0;Charbonnier claimed, somewhat implausibly given his experiences, that there was no reason why anyone would take offence.

Even those who have defended the magazine's right to publish have admitted the articles have been crass. But Charbonnier told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjM36w_X-N4&amp;feature=youtu.be">Al Jazeera in a 2012 interview</a>, that his argument has always been that free speech must be upheld and cannot be bounded by what will and will not cause offence.
Today, the Charlie Hebdo story took a gruesome turn as two gunmen burst into its offices and shot dead at least 12 people. They shouted "<a href="http://news.sky.com/story/1403662/gunmen-hunted-after-12-killed-at-paris-magazine">we have avenged the prophet!</a>" according to Sky News.
