5 apps that are pushing virtual reality in education forward

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hulk's fate in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" was altered due to rumors about a standalone <keyword id="11897475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie" source="Orion">movie</keyword>.</li><li>Rumors spread that a film adaptation of the "Planet Hulk" comic book storyline was in the works.</li></ul><p>Hulk's fate in "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/avengers-age-of-ultron">Avengers: Age of Ultron</a>" was modified in response to speculation that <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/marvel">Marvel</a> was setting up a solo movie for the superhero.</p><p>"We went so far as to change the 'Age of Ultron' script because of [the internet rumors]," <keyword id="11899344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="marvel" source="Orion">Marvel</keyword> Studios president <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/kevin-feige">Kevin Feige</a> said in a new behind-the-scenes book called "The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the <keyword id="11931627" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="marvel-cinematic-universe" source="Orion">Marvel Cinematic Universe</keyword>" by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry.</p><p>Back in 2013, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20130209062612/http://latino-review.com:80/2013/02/04/superbowl-exclusive-the-hulk-fit-marvels-phase-2-phase-3-plans/">Latino Review</a> <a href="https://www.wired.com/2013/02/planet-hulk-movie/">reported</a> that Marvel Studios had plans for a new standalone Hulk film called "Planet Hulk," starring <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/mark-ruffalo">Mark Ruffalo</a> and based on a 2006 comic-book storyline by Greg Pak.</p><p>The storyline involved the green superhero ending up in space, on a planet known as Sakaar, and becoming a gladiator. </p><p>The publication reported that the second "Avengers" film, directed by Joss Whedon and released in theaters in May 2015, would lay the groundwork for the aforementioned movie. </p><p>Feige himself tried to dispel the rumor at the time, <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/blogs/movie-talk/planet-hulk-movie-rumors-smashed-222217220.html">telling MTV</a> that he thought "Planet Hulk" is "a cool story," but an adaptation could get bogged down by "dense" mythology.</p><p>Then in 2014, Ruffalo expressed skepticism, <a href="https://www.mtv.com/news/1857733/planet-hulk-mark-ruffalo/">telling MTV News</a>: "I don't think ['Planet Hulk'] is the way to go yet. I think you need more Banner. The whole thing is just him as Hulk, on a planet, fighting other gladiators."</p><div type="image" title="Hulk seen in a spacecraft in &quot;Avengers: Age of Ultron.&quot;" height="1182" width="1576" msid="87291847" hostid="261"></div><p>Near the conclusion of "Ultron," Hulk entered space via a Quinjet. With the aircraft's stealth mode activated, his whereabouts were unknown and untraceable to the Avengers.</p><p>"One of our tech boys flagged this," Nick Fury (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/samuel-l-jackson">Samuel L. Jackson</a>) told Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/scarlett-johansson">Scarlett Johansson</a>), showing her a tablet. "Splashed down in the Banda Sea. Could be the Quinjet. But with Stark's stealth tech, we still can't track the damn thing." </p><p>"Probably jumped out and swam to Fiji," Fury added. "He'll send a postcard."</p><p>In "The Story of Marvel Studios," Feige said that the moment didn't originally play out that way. He shared similar comments during a 2017 <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/kevin-feige-thor-ragnarok-planet-hulk/">interview with TheWrap</a>.  </p><p>"One of Joss' early drafts had Hulk, in a Quinjet, heading out of the atmosphere," Feige recalled in the book. "At the end, Nick Fury is talking to Widow. She asks, 'Any sign of him?' And he says, 'We lost his signal when it went past Saturn.'"</p><p>Feige continued: "So when Joss delivered those pages that had him going into space, I went, 'Joss, we can't do this. People are gonna think we're doing 'Planet Hulk.' Just say he got lost and you can't find him past the Fiji Islands or something.'"</p><div type="image" title="Hulk seen in a spacecraft in &quot;Avengers: Age of Ultron.&quot;" height="1196" width="1595" msid="87291849" hostid="261"></div><p>Aside from adjusting the script, Feige said that there were visual modifications as well. </p><p>"Even in visual effects, where Hulk looks up [in the Quinjet], there were times where it started to look like stars and we went, 'No, put blue sky in there,'" he said.  </p><p>The producer also said that adapting "Planet Hulk" wasn't an idea that came up "because, as cool as we thought the comic was, Bruce Banner is not a part of 'Planet Hulk.'" </p><p>Even though "Planet Hulk" didn't lead to a standalone film, aspects of the storyline were incorporated in 2017's "Thor: Ragnarok," which featured Hulk and Thor fighting in a gladiator duel on Sakaar. </p>

The 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' script changed because of 'internet rumors' that Marvel was setting up a solo Hulk movie

"I played with Korg's voice, which is a very colloquial New Zealand accent, a very rural accent, and Chris cracked up at that. Then we riffed on that a little bit more and Chris was like, 'You should play that. Find more scenes to put him in,'" Waititi said. "I guess, because we were in Australia - and they couldn't really find us or control us - we were able to just start shoving Korg in here and there. And now he becomes this ridiculously prominent character." </p><p>Waititi also said that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was particularly encouraging of his creativity. </p><p>"All of Korg's stuff was pretty much ad-libbed on the day," he said. "And a lot of it was just stuff to kind of loosen us up."</p><p>Korg appeared throughout "Ragnarok" and returned in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Waititi will reprise the role for the upcoming fourth "Thor" film called "Thor: Love and Thunder," which he's also directing. </p><p>In an Instagram live video as part of a "Ragnarok" watch party in April 2020, Waititi <a href="https://comicbook.com/marvel/2020/04/10/thor-love-thunder-korg-director-says-origin-explored/">said that fans will learn more about Korg's culture</a> and where he came from in the new movie.</p><p>"<a href="https://www.insider.com/thor-4-love-and-thunder-details-information-2020-3">Thor: Love and Thunder</a>" is currently set for release on July 8, 2022. </p>

(Come on, Marvel!)</strong></li></ul><hr><p>&#xa0;</p><p><em>Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.</em></p><p>It seems after two "Thor" movies, Marvel decided to do a huge pivot in tone for its third, and thank goodness it did.</p><p>Not to say that "Thor" (2011) and "Thor: The Dark World" (2013) aren't good - they aren't the best Marvel movies, but they are definitely watchable - but we all needed a change from the super-serious family drama surrounding the son of Odin.</p><p>Enter filmmaker Taika Waititi.&#xa0;<span>Waititi has an&#xa0;</span>outlandish style highlighted in his out-there indie films ("What We Do in the Shadows," "Hunt for the Wilderpeople"), and he brought the perfect new feel to Thor.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f348ae3e9d2521008b60d7-2400/thorragnarok4marvel.jpg" alt="ThorRagnarok4Marvel" data-mce-source="Marvel"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">Chris Hemsworth in "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>If you're a Marvel Cinematic Universe fanatic, you know that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) have been out doing their own things since "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015), and didn't appear in "Captain America: Civil War." (In "Doctor Strange," Thor appeared in the end credits.)<p>In "Ragnarok" (in theaters on Friday) we find out what they've been up to.</p><p>After a stint trying to track down the Infinity Stones, we find Thor on his way back to his home of Asgard, as word&#xa0;is that Ragnarok, a giant battle foretold to lead to the ultimate destruction of Asgard, is coming. He returns to find Loki (Tom Hiddleston) ruling the world disguised as their father Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Needing to warn his father about Ragnarok, Thor makes Loki take him to where he left their father. After a funny cameo by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the brothers find Odin, who is on the verge of death. He reveals that there is an even greater evil that's to come, Hela (Cate Blanchett), the sister they never knew they had. Following a quick battle, Thor and Loki find themselves on the planet Sakaar where they meet a bunch of interesting characters, including Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (voiced by Waititi), Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum),&#xa0;and&#xa0;Hulk,&#xa0;who has&#xa0;been on the planet for two years. They team up to head back to Asgard to take down Hela.</p><p>Sounds like a cut-and-dry Marvel movie, huh?</p><p>Well, along with the usual exposition, the movie is filled with deadpan jokes and is-this-scene-really-in-a-Marvel-movie moments. From Thor and Hulk sitting on a bed talking about their feelings, to Goldblum being his most Goldblum, "Ragnarok" is an enjoyable break from the more "serious" issues explored in the MCU.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f348303e9d257c6d8b5410-1144/thorragnarok3marvel.jpg" alt="ThorRagnarok3Marvel" data-mce-source="Marvel"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">Cate Blanchett deserved better in "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>"Ragnarok" certainly isn't the first Marvel movie to be fun. All MCU titles have taken pride in having a playful mix of laughs and action (the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" are&#xa0;recent examples).<p>But what Waititi brings to "Ragnarok" is a step beyond that.</p><p>Every funny remark or action in "Ragnarok" is extended further, and what comes out of that is a playful tone that is a nice break to the mind-numbing violence.</p><p>It's also nice to see Hemsworth being allowed to show off his comic chops beyond just a line here or there in the previous two movies.</p><p>But that's not to say the movie is perfect.</p><p>There are points&#xa0;when the momentum stops for (ugh) plot. Most of the movie is split up between Thor and his "Revengers" trying to get off Sakaar, and the evil things Hela is doing on Asgard. The shift to the action on Asgard is dull and by-the-numbers.</p><p>Sadly, Blanchett doesn't help in this part of the movie. Like most superhero movie villains, Hela is bland and predictable. 'Thor: Ragnarok' works because it leans into laughs and weird moments more than any other Marvel movie

He brings some of the best comedic moments of the movie and later fights alongside Thor in the movie's conclusion.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59fb414e58a0c130008b5a12-1390/korg-thor-ragnarok.png" alt="korg thor ragnarok" data-mce-source="Marvel" /><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">Korg in "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></div><p></p></div></div>The character is a scene-stealer, and credit has to go to the person who decided to take it on for the movie, "Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi.</p><p>However, Waititi admits he didn't decide to voice Korg because he had some grand idea of how to make the character stand out. It really all happened by chance.</p><p>"I knew I was going to play something in the film, because I always put myself in my films, but I didn't know what," Waititi told <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/taika-waititi-thor-ragnarok-interview-2017-10">Business Insider</a>. "He was one of the few minor characters that hadn't been cast yet so I decided to do that one."</p><p>Figuring the role of Korg was small enough that doing the motion-capture on set for the character, and voicing it, wouldn't be much added work to his already busy schedule as the director, he claimed Korg and moved on to more pressing matters.</p><p>"We didn't end up doing a huge amount of it until much later in prep," Waititi said. "There were many other story points we had to worry about. Waititi said. "I kind of based it on people I remember from home. So it's a strange combination of a big guy with a gentle-natured presence. Chris was loving that when we started doing those scenes, and we started shooting some stuff."</p><p>Waititi said Marvel loved Korg too, so what started as a character that was in there just for exposition turned into Marvel's newest sensation.</p><p>"We injected him into more and more scenes and before you know it he was all over the movie," Waititi said.</p><p>Always feeling the pulse of its fans, Marvel can already tell audiences are in love with the big guy - along with his sidekick <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miek" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Miek</a> - and the studio has hinted that there will be more from the bashing duo.</p><p>"We have plans for Korg and Miek," Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege told <a href="https://www.fandango.com/movie-news/marvel-has-big-plans-for-korg-and-miek-from-thor-ragnarok-752739" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fandango</a>. However, what he's given "Ragnarok" (opening in theaters November 3) is a new kind of Marvel story that intentionally veers from its conventional "save the world" blueprint, and hypes up the comedy aspects while still telling a thrilling story.</p><p>Business Insider spoke to Waititi about being allowed to amp up the weird on a huge blockbuster, why he was convinced Marvel would get fed up with his unconventional style, his decision to voice the movie's scene-stealing Korg character, and the idea of flashback scenes of Thor and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as kids that didn't make the cut.</p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: I love how you describe your work being a mix between comedy, drama, and "the clumsiness of humanity." Is that formula easier or harder to pull off in a superhero movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Taika Waititi:</strong> I actually feel like it's harder because you just have to spend more time figuring out what those clumsy elements are in these&#xa0;larger&#xa0;than life characters. Really, when I look at the story of Thor, how I kind of get myself in there and figure out I can tell the story, is actually looking at it in terms of an indie film. It's about a guy trying to get home because there's someone in his house, and he's got to sort that out. And along the way he's got his annoying brother, a drunk chick, and some bipolar kid with him. [<em>Laughs.</em>] And he's just trying to get home. So that's the way into the story, and then it's how do I apply those things into spaceships and explosions.&#xa0;</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f1396f3e9d2514048b53f3-2400/thorragnaroktaikamarvel.jpg" alt="ThorRagnarokTaikaMarvel" data-mce-source="Marvel"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">(Center) Taika Waititi on the set of "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Guerrasio: Take that indie idea and then go really big with it.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Yeah.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: So when you had the early talks with Marvel about the project, did you lay all the cards on the table and say that you weren't interested in making the typical Marvel franchise movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Yeah. But they knew that as well. They said that. "We know this isn't going to be very fulfilling for you to come in and continue with what we've done. And we don't want to continue with what we've done. We want to do something very fresh and new."</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: And that must have been music to your ears.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> It was.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Was there a moment through all this when you said to yourself, "Wow, they are really letting me do this the way I want to do it!"</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Within reason. There were moments when you're like, "Wow, this is something that I never thought I'd be allowed to put into a superhero movie." But I came in knowing&#xa0;I'd bring character, tone, and dialogue - those are my strengths. Marvel's job really is just to keep me in my lane and make sure I'm not crashing the car. Derailing the Avengers. [<em>Laughs.</em>]</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: That being said, did you ever get told by Marvel after they looked at the&#xa0;dailies&#xa0;to tone it down?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> No. There was never a moment like that, which was both surprising and also disconcerting. "Wow, man, are they even watching the&#xa0;dailies?" We were doing stuff that was so different. I remember after a couple of days working with Chris [Hemsworth] and Mark [Ruffalo], Mark came up to me and said, "I'll be surprised if you and I are back here on Monday. I have a feeling like we're breaking this. They are going to get rid of us." We were just doing whatever we felt we wanted to see in the film. That includes a scene with Hulk and Thor sitting on a bed talking about their emotions and apologizing to each other after an argument. Which is not something I felt I've ever seen in a superhero movie.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f137383e9d25d4038b536e-1716/thorragnarokthorhulkmarvel.jpg" alt="ThorRagnarokThorHulkMarvel" data-mce-source="Marvel"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk in "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: But strangely, those lighthearted "real" scenes are what I remember most from this movie.</strong><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Totally. And I feel that is the point of difference that I've managed to bring. What would everyone expect from this and let's do the opposite. That's what we were saying to each other often when we were shooting. "Does this feel like we've seen it before? And if so, how do we change it?" I've seen the hero in a movie getting beaten up by a bunch of people, and then a mysterious figure comes in and saves them, and the person takes off their mask and it's the love interest. How about we make that love interest&#xa0;(the Valkyrie character played by Tessa Thompson) more like Han Solo and she's a drunk, gambling mercenary who in her introductory scene falls off the ramp of her spaceship.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: <a href="http://www.denofgeek.com/uk/movies/taika-waititi/52768/thor-ragnarok-director-taika-waititi-interview" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">I read</a> that in your sizzle reel to Marvel you had scenes from "Sixteen Candles" because there was a time when you were planning to do flashback scenes of Thor as a kid.</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Yeah. I did.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: How long did you play around with that flashback idea?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> It was in the first couple months of storylining. We always wondered, could we put in these flashbacks and make them work. To me it still feels like a great idea, but it was one element too many. It was very hard to justify doing. It would have felt like just this one-off little flashback and it needed more. We could have done it when Thor talks about one of the times Loki tried to kill him.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Instead of Thor describing it in that scene there could have been a jump to a flashback?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Yeah. But it's actually better that we didn't flashback because it's funnier him just telling the story.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: It's funny, but I don't know, watching a teen Thor and Loki in a flashback scene would have been really great.</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> It would have been funnier if it was this ongoing thing where we had more and more of those stories through the movie.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Yes.</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> But just a one-off would have just thrown people off too much.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: The one thing I'm kind of bummed about was that the trailer revealed that Hulk is Thor's opponent in their fight on Sakaar. The buildup is so great. Are you disappointed that was used in the trailer?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Not necessarily. I felt like it was something everyone knew was going to happen because Mark was in the movie. It's very hard to keep any of that stuff under wraps. Marvel knows in many ways with something like that you have to give it out.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f1362f3e9d25a8028b53e5-1129/thorragnarokkorgmarvel.jpg" alt="ThorRagnarokKorgMarvel" data-mce-source="Marvel"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p><p class="caption">Taika Waititi is the voice of Korg in "Thor: Ragnarok."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: How early on did you want to do the Korg character?</strong><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> That was definitely in the script early on, but we didn't end up doing a huge amount with it until much later on in prep. There were many other story points we had to worry about, we knew this character was going to be in at least one or two scenes as a kind of information giver. I knew I was going to play something in the film because I always put myself in my films but I didn't know what. And he was one of the few minor characters that hadn't been cast yet so I decided to do that one. Also, it was small enough that it wouldn't infringe on my concentration with directing the film. Which was the priority. The more I found the voice through the read-through the more funny we found it. The more jokes came out of those reads.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: How did you find the voice?</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> Just through reading the script through with Chris. We would start getting into those scenes and I would play with the voice and we thought wouldn't it be funny if this big hulking rock guy had this very delicate voice? I kind of based it on people I remember from home. So it's a strange combination of a big guy with a gentle-natured presence. Chris was loving that when we started doing those scenes, and we started shooting some stuff, and Marvel thought it was really funny and I really enjoyed doing it. Chris wanted to do more, so we injected him into more and more scenes and before you know it he was all over the movie.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Before I go, what's the latest on the <a href="http://deadline.com/2017/05/bubbles-michael-jackson-chimpanzee-movie-netflix-cannes-film-festival-1202096715/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bubbles the Chimp stop-motion movie</a> you're doing for Netflix.</strong></p><p><strong>Waititi:</strong> I'm excited about it. We are in very early stages. Early development with design and trying to figure out the schedule.
