The Austin-based chain — once jokingly known as "whole paycheck" — is increasingly benefiting from economies of scale, meaning that things get cheaper when it buys in larger quantities, as Kyle Stock <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-05-08/whole-foods-profits-by-cutting-whole-paycheck-reputation#r=rss">points out in Bloomberg Businessweek</a>.
With lower prices and more sales, Whole Foods has been able to penetrate smaller or less affluent cities, <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-05-08/whole-foods-profits-by-cutting-whole-paycheck-reputation#r=rss">like South Bend, Indiana</a> and Detroit.
The brand still has a ways to go, with 349 stores compared to <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=64607&amp;p=irol-factbook">1,678 for Safeway</a> and <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/56873/000110465912021358/a12-1263_110k.htm">2,435 for Kroger</a>, but it's getting there.
The stock market agrees. Whole Foods stock trades at a 38.35 price-to-earnings ratio, compared with <keyword id="1743534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Krogers">Kroger's</keyword> 12.51, which means that investors expect quite a lot more growth. 
<div>At the same time, Whole Foods maintains the highest sales per square foot in the industry.</div>
"If we can be relevant on price, we can get to the quality conversation that we really want to have," co-CEO Walter Robb <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2013/05/06/leadership/whole-foods-robb-ceo.pr.fortune/index.html">told Fortune. </a>

Other brands that make snacks using Jif peanut butter are also recalling products. Jif parent company <a href="https://www.jmsmucker.com/news-stories?news=23101">J.M. Smucker voluntarily issued a recall of dozens</a> of products on May 20 over potential exposure at its Lexington, Kentucky facility. The recalled products were distributed to retailers across the country, the company said. So far <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/outbreak-investigation-salmonella-peanut-butter-may-2022">14 infections have been reported to the FDA</a> in 12 states, with two patients requiring hospitalizations. The <keyword id="11899468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda" source="Orion">FDA</keyword> and <keyword id="11917544" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cdc" source="Orion">CDC</keyword> continue to investigate the outbreak.People should avoid Jif products with codes from 1274425 through 2140425, and check any Jif peanut butter products in their homes. "When I first started I thought, 'You know, there's so many plants out there, we'll be able to find something that scrambles like an egg in no time," Tetrick said.But every time Tetrick's team came up with an eggless recipe, one variable was always off. "We'd find something that would gel like an egg but tasted too plant-like. Or we'd find something that had the egg taste but wouldn't gel," said Tetrick. Then came the controversy. Allegations surfaced that members of the company had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hampton-creek-ceo-complaints-2015-7">artificially inflated sales</a> by buying up their own products. And former <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hampton-creek-ceo-complaints-2015-7">employees claimed</a> to Business Insider that the company was using shoddy <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword>, and spoke of an uncomfortable and unsafe work environment.But despite lagging behind on a vegan egg product that could stand on its own, the company succeeded at making a handful of other tasty items that normally require eggs. Vegan cookie dough, mayo, and salad dressing began to grace grocery store shelves bearing the Hampton Creek label. Before becoming a full-time shopper she worked in administration in the medical industry. </li><li>Harwick said in the first two months of the <keyword id="8829783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus-pandemic">coronavirus pandemic</keyword> she had "no idle time," with a flurry of orders rushing in hourly. </li><li>This is her story, as told to freelance writer Meira Gebel.</li></ul>I started delivering groceries for Instacart four years ago, after a former coworker told me about how he was making extra money on the side. Previously I worked in administration in the medical field. I decided to leave my job and do something fun where I could make a comfortable living, and I've always loved grocery shopping. This also has given me a chance to meet new people and serve others.I am 61, so I am not as young as many of the Instacart shoppers right now. I consider myself a seasoned shopper — I like to take my time and make sure everything in a customer's order is correct, so that no eggs are broken and no bananas are bruised. I don't like to rush through the store.The application process is unlike anything I was ever familiar with. You have an interview with someone over the phone, you have a background check, but you never meet anyone in person. <div type="image" title="Kathy Harwick" height="521" width="695" msid="78954211" hostid="261"></div>It took about three weeks from my first initial interview until my first day shopping. There was no in-person training; instead, we were given instructional videos to watch about how to weigh groceries, select items, and use the app. On your first order you try to take small batches just to get the hang of it. Like other gig workers, Instacart shoppers are not Instacart employees — we are independent contractors and get paid through Instacart-owned Maplebear Inc. We get paid per order, not hourly, and the amount you can earn from one order to another frequently changes depending on size.<h2>I work five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Unlike some Instacart shoppers, I don't like to work 14-hour days. </h2>I wake up around 7 a.m. every day and turn on my phone to see if any stores in my area have orders ready to go. I try to be out of the door by 8 a.m. I make sure to select and pick up my first order of the day from the closest store in my zone (a logistical geographical region) to my home. I shop and deliver groceries from five main stores in my zone [of] west Portland: New Seasons, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Albertsons, and Quality Food Center. Instacart's algorithm works so that the more time you put in that you are available to shop, the more orders you will receive. You will also be at the top of the list when a new order comes in. If you mark that you are unavailable one day, you will get a ding and get placed at the bottom the next time you are available. Most gig work is like this and runs on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-delivery-driver-pay-day-in-life-what-its-like-2020-10">a round-robin algorithm</a>. I used to drive for Lyft, so the structure is familiar to me. After I receive an order, I drive to the store and do the shopping. We are timed on our orders. If we have ten items in an order, Instacart allots us about one minute of shopping time per item. If an item is unavailable, we are supposed to mark it as unavailable on the app, alerting the customer of another similar item. Sometimes the items the app suggests are not similar. I like to call customers or send a picture of the items around the missing item to see what they would prefer to avoid texting back and forth. We can control how long it takes us to shop, but we can't control how long it takes to check out, which cuts into our time. I like to bag the groceries myself because I like things to be orderly. Vegetables with vegetables, that sort of thing. I then drive and drop off the customer's order to their doorstep. I would say I drop off deliveries at about 15 houses or businesses in a single day. Before the pandemic, I was able to meet customers and have conversations and get to know them. Some still see my name on the delivery and send me a note saying they were happy I was doing their order. In the four years I've been shopping for Instacart, I've averaged 25,000 to 30,000 miles on my Kia Optima just delivering groceries in west Portland.<h2>As a five-star shopper — meaning I have an average of 5-star customer reviews — I try to make no less than $20 to $25 an hour because I don't want to push myself too hard and get hurt. I aim for $1,000 a week, but try to not make less than $750.</h2>For me, the incentives Instacart offers are not worth it. Say there is a $65 incentive to do five batches (multiple orders within one job) within a certain timeframe. I know I am going to do five batches, but I won't get paid an extra $65. I'll make $50 from the orders and Instacart will give me $15 extra. The pay has gone down considerably since I started working for Instacart four years ago. When I started delivering groceries in west Portland, there were 64 other shoppers. Now there are 800. At the beginning of the pandemic, there were nearly 1,000 Instacart shoppers in my zone. Probably because people were out of work and looking for additional income. The number of shoppers has gone down since the state reopened in June, because people maybe are back at work, or didn't like being a shopper. <h2>During the spring months of the coronavirus pandemic, my car was like a medical supply store. I didn't stop working, so I made sure to have ample disposable masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant. </h2>I also carried bottles of water, tissues, and gloves. On the Instacart app we are required to take and log our temperature for the day and report whether or not we were experiencing symptoms before we start delivering. Instacart sent out packages of PPE, but I didn't request one because at that point in the pandemic many of the shoppers had already purchased their own supplies. It was a little too late. Those first two months of the pandemic, there was no idle time. We were in such high demand. There were so many orders. Sometimes, before the pandemic, you could sit in your car before a new batch came in and rest, but during March and April we had no time to rest. I never felt afraid of getting sick, because I trusted the precautions I was taking. I knew it was important to do this job during this scary time, because a lot of our customers are seniors and single moms who may not have the time or opportunity to go to the grocery store. I made more money in those first two months of the pandemic than I ever had working for Instacart. We were making good money, but we aren't making that kind of money anymore. Maybe it will pick back up in the winter, when the weather gets worse, but I don't know. <h2>My overall experience working for Instacart has been great, but it does take a toll on your body. I love working with customers because I am a people person and want to serve my community. </h2>This job has been more fulfilling than my career in the corporate world, just not as stable. I may slow down working in the next couple years, but I like the flexibility of working when I want to. Working in the corporate world, it is hard to take time off. I have six grandchildren so I want to take days off and spend time with my family. I take screenshots of all the nice things customers have said about my service. Some reach out to me and say they appreciate me taking the time to call them and make sure their orders were right. Tips make up about 95% of what we make shopping for Instacart, so I take those relationships with customers seriously. I never want to over promise and then under deliver. A major US publisher linked to Trump allies has put out a 97-page propaganda spread on the Saudi crown prince

That's why each November, Victory Media, the publisher of <a href="http://www.gijobs.com/">G.I. Jobs</a>, releases its annual list of the 100 <a href="http://militaryfriendly.com/">most military-friendly employers</a>.
The ranking, now in its twelfth year, is compiled using results from a comprehensive, data-driven survey among approximately 5,000 companies (a minimum of $500 million in annual revenue was required to be eligible for the list).
The survey asked these employers more than 100 questions, which assessed their long-term commitment to recruiting and hiring former military personnel, policies for Reserve/Guard members called to active duty, the presence of special programs, and retention rates.
With help from an independent advisory board of industry experts, Victory Media developed the <a href="http://militaryfriendly.com/methodology">methodology</a> and criteria for the survey, and the results were tested by Ernst &amp; Young.
"It's critical to isolate and distinguish those companies with the strongest job opportunities, hiring practices, and retention programs for transitioning service members and spouses seeking civilian employment so that candidates are able to conduct an efficient and effective job search," says Sean Collins, vice president of Victory Media and a nine-year Navy veteran. "Our list serves as the defacto post-military employment guide for transitioning service members and their families."
<a href="https://www.combinedinsurance.com/">Combined Insurance Company of America</a>, a frequent top performer with more than 40% of its recent hires representing veterans or military spouses, tops the 2015 list of military-friendly employers. 
In a press statement released by G.I. Jobs, Brad Bennett, president of Combined Insurance, said that being named the No. 1 military-friendly employer "is a tremendous privilege, and we are honored to be recognized for our initiatives. But more importantly, not only does it mean we are doing things right, it also means we are doing the right things to help our nation's veterans find meaningful employment."

Key European indicators measured by the Flash Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) will be released tomorrow. In The U.S., we'll get some key housing indicators and another read on jobs.
Several top U.S. companies are posting earnings reports tomorrow, like Wal-Mart and Safeway.
Here's what you need to know (all times ET, consensus estimates from Bloomberg):

<li>At 3 am, the French Flash PMI manufacturing and services index numbers will be released. Analysts expect the manufacturing index to have risen by almost one point, from 42.9 in January to 43.8 in February. Analysts expect the services index to rise by 0.8 points, to 44.4 in February, from 43.6 in January.</li>
<li>At 3:30 am, German Flash PMI manufacturing and services index numbers will be released. Analysts expect the manufacturing index to have risen by 0.7 points, from 49.8 in January to 50.5 in February. Analysts expect the services index to fall by 0.2 points, to 55.5 in February, from 55.7 in January.</li>
<li>At 4 am, the PMI composite for the European Commission will be released. Analysts expect the composite index to rise by 0.4 points, from 48.6 in January to 49 in February. The PMI manufacturing index for the EC is expected to have risen by 0.6 points, from 47.9 in January to 48.5 in February. Analysts expect the services index to rise by 0.4 points, to 49 in February, from 48.6 in January.</li>
<li>At 8:30 am, U.S. initial jobless claims for the week preceding Feb 16 will be released. Analysts expect workers will have made 355,000 claims in the second week of February, slightly up from the 341,000 in the first week.</li>
<li>At the same time, U.S. CPI number will be released. Excluding food and energy, analysts expect inflation to have risen by 0.2 percent in January, compared to a 0.1 percent rise in December. Including food and energy, inflation is expected to have risen by 0.1 percent in January, compared to 0 percent in December.</li>
<li>At 10 am U.S. existing home sales numbers will be released, and analysts expect that 4.9 million homes were sold in January, slightly down from 4.9 million in December.</li>
<li>At the same time, the U.S. leading indicators number will released, and analysts expect it to have risen by 0.2% in January, a slower pace than 0.5% in December.</li>
<li>At at 10 am, the results of the Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook Survey will be released. Analysts expect it to rise by 6.9 points in January, to 1.1, from -5.8 in January.</li>
</ul>

Abercrombie has floundered since 2009, when it nearly didn't turn a profit. Since then, the preppy clothing company has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/abercrombie-attempts-to-be-hipster-2013-6">struggled to connect</a> with increasingly alternative customers. 
But through the downturn, Abercrombie has continued giving Jeffries insane perks. 
In 2011, it paid him $4 million to stop using the company jet, according to the report. This year, his compensation package was padded with access to lucrative stock appreciation rights. 
Shareholders are disgruntled about his insane pay—only 23% approved his compensation package at the annual meeting in June. He earned <a href="http://consumerist.com/2013/06/25/abercrombie-fitch-shareholders-vote-against-ceos-xxl-pay-package/">$8.16 million</a> in 2012. 
So how does Abercrombie justify padding Jeffries' benefits, even while the company flounders under his leadership? 
By citing the incredible impact he's had on Abercrombie &amp; Fitch as we know it. 
Jeffries, who has been CEO for about 20 years, is “effectively the founder” of modern-day Abercrombie, the compensation committee said at the meeting. 
Before he took over, Abercrombie <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-rise-and-fall-of-abercrombie-and-fitch-2013-7#af-started-as-a-store-for-outdoorsmen-1">was known as</a> a store for outdoorsman. Jeffries transformed it into a sexy teen destination that was constantly making headlines. 
Still, it's been well over a decade since Abercrombie experienced its heyday.
Most recently, Jeffries has been criticized for his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/abercrombie-is-in-trouble-2013-2">flailing international expansion plan</a>, and for hurting brand perception by saying <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/abercrombie-wants-thin-customers-2013-5">he only wants beautiful people</a> to shop there. 
Abercrombie's compensation committee has given no indication that Jeffries' pay will take a hit as a result of these missteps.
His pay package shows the power he still wields over the brand.
