Maggi is in trouble. Governments across the country are filing cases and deploying food inspectors to test Maggi samples. Some are fawning to fine Nestlé for misbranding the noodles brand as a healthy food alternative. 
 
The company recently released an official statement saying, “People can be confident that Maggi Noodle products are safe to eat. The quality and safety of our products are the top priorities for our Company.” 
 
Most find it hard to believe that a world class brand like Nestlé would not comply with industry norms. Some argue that a company as blue chip as this one has more at stake than anyone else. 
 
That didn’t stop the Delhi government from banning sales of Maggi noodles today. 
 
What if this leads to a chain of bans across India till it wipes our favorite ‘two minute snack’ off the map? 
 
The only way to realize the worth of the brand is to witness a market without it. How much exactly would the brand be set back for? What would the market look like without India’s leading noodles seller? Let’s find out. 
 
Enter a world without Maggi. 
 
It’s impossible to quantify the exact amount of losses the parent brand would incur. Considering that Maggi accounts for around 15-16,000 Crores of Nestlé’s turnover one could guess it’s surely not in pennies. 
 
Industry experts project that the brand would suffer a three stage hit. 
 
“If Nestlé can’t sell Maggi at all, that in itself will be a big setback for the brand. It’s also a brand for ketchup and other condiments. The whole brand will get impacted because of this, even when the ban would be on Maggi noodles. More than the money, Nestlé’s reputation in India will go for a big hit”, Arvind Singhal, Chairman at Management Consulting firm Technopak predicts. 
 
Maggi currently sells instant soups, ketchups, seasonings and instant noodles in India. 
 
What’s the way forward if it does get banned? 
 
“Maggi as a brand has not been banned. It’s just one product. The company can still have a product recall and re-launch it by saying it’s totally compliant”, Singhal says. 
 
While there is no use crying over spilt Maggi, looks like it’ll take more than a few bans to wipe out your favorite midnight snack.

From June, even local sweet shops will have to display the 'best before <keyword id="14345" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Date">date</keyword>' and 'date of manufacturing' on non-packaged or loose <keyword id="1391" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sweets">sweets</keyword> kept in a container or tray for sale at their outlets. At present, it is mandatory to mention these details on labels of pre-packaged/pre-packed sweets. The <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and Standards <keyword id="188818" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Authority-of-India">Authority of India</keyword> (FSSAI) has issued a direction in this regard after reports of instances of sale of stale/expired sweets to consumers posing potential health hazards. "In public interest and to ensure food <keyword id="46574" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="safety">safety</keyword>, it has been decided that in case of non-packaged/loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should display the 'date of manufacturing' and 'best before date' of the product," the FSSAI order stated. This will be effective from June 1,2020, it added. The regulator said that food business operators (FBOs) should decide and display the 'best before date' of sweets depending upon the nature of the product and local conditions. Food safety commissioners of states have been asked to ensure compliance to these directions, the order added.

Last year, transport minister Nitin Gadkari said that road accidents are “more serious than the COVID-19 pandemic," and this is corroborated by the data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau. Now, after Mistry’s demise has sent shockwaves across the country, Gadkari said that even chief ministers don’t follow safety rules. Some ministers even use a clip so that the alarm does not make any sound, said Gadkari, when there is no belt. After the incident, Gadkari also said that the ministry is now working towards making six airbags compulsory in all cars. It was not too long ago, just in February 2022 that the Indian <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/auto/cars/govt-makes-three-point-seat-belts-mandatory-for-all-front-facing-passengers-in-car/articleshow/89501540.cms">government </a>had also made it mandatory for automakers to provide three-point seat belts for all front-facing passengers in a car, which is also applicable for the middle seat in the rear row of a car. It is also stated in the rules Motor Vehicles Act 138(3) that fastening seat belts is compulsory for passengers sitting in the front as well as the rear seats. However, India fails to follow the law of its land. As per a 2019 report by SaveLIFE Foundation, less than 1% of people in India use rear seat belts. 37.8% of all the people surveyed didn’t even know that any such legal compulsion existed. While 23.9% of people didn’t even know that rear seat belts existed. The centre has also made it compulsory for all cars to have six airbags across from October 1. After losing his ‘good friend,’ minister Gadkari said that all cars exported out of India have 6 airbags and asked then why Indian cars have only four airbags. What India can learn from other countries In 1997, Sweden adopted a ‘Vision Zero’ policy based on the idea that “no loss of life was acceptable.” The policy did not focus on changing human behaviour, the emphasis was on designing a better system of roads and other infrastructure, vehicle technology and enforcement. On the other hand, Singapore uses advanced warning lights that alert drivers about the upcoming signal and vehicle speed. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/peterlyon/2020/08/27/frightening-consequences-for-drink-drivers-in-japan/">Japan </a>also has a strict policy for drunken drivers. It has a zero percent blood-alcohol level standard for drivers and individuals caught driving under the influence can face imprisonment for up to 15 years. In Switzerland, passengers travelling in the same car as a drunk driver are also considered liable and can lose their own licenses. Apart from strictly enforcing speed limits and other road regulations, Norway has found a unique approach to reduce its fatalities. It has made it mandatory for drivers to always have their headlights on while driving. Safety measures taken by automakers From installing airbags and adding stringent seatbelt alarms to running awareness campaigns, automakers have been trying to up safety for India’s car passengers. Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors offer six airbags across some models. Luxury car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo are also offering six airbags and the number increases on the higher-end models. Safety rules you must follow To stay safe, one must <a href="https://highwaypolice.maharashtra.gov.in/en/road-safety-guideline/#:~:text=Always%20obey%20Road%20safety%20rules,as%20markets%20and%20residential%20areas.">obey </a><keyword id="1501776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety-rules" source="Orion">road safety rules</keyword> and regulations of India. <ul><li>Look for the traffic signs before you cross signals. </li><li>Drive within the speed limits prescribed. Ideally one should drive at approximately not more than 30 kmph near busy places such as markets and residential areas.</li><li>Keep vehicle oiled and serviced. A sudden breakdown of the vehicle on the road can cause hardships not only to you but also to fellow drivers and traffic personnel. </li><li>Stop or slow down your vehicle and allow the pedestrians to crossroads at unmanned/signalled Zebra crossings.</li><li>Always wear seat belts while driving four-wheelers.</li><li>Avoid rash or negligent driving.</li><li>Do not drink and drive.</li><li>Avoid using mobile phones while driving. New Delhi, Feb 17 () Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will represent India at a two-day global conference on road safety in Stockholm on February 18 and 19. The objective of the conference is to bring road safety on the global agenda and renew the world community's commitment to safer roads, the highways and road ministry said in a statement. "Road Transport &amp; Highways and MSMEs Minister Nitin Gadkari reached Stockholm today to represent India at the '3rd High Level Global Conference on Road Safety for Achieving Global Goals 2030'," the statement said. Leaders from participating countries will draw up a road map for reaching the goal of reducing road crashes by 2030 set under the 'UN Decade of Action'. The conference, a follow up of the 2nd High Level Global Conference on "Traffic Safety-Time of Results" in 2015 in Brazil, is being organised in collaboration with the World Bank, World Health Organisation (WHO) and other agencies. A significant highlight of the conference will be sharing of the expertise by the nations which have gained experience in road safety management with those who are behind in the learning curve, the statement said. Emphasis will also be on adopting best practices that are emerging in different parts of the world. It said developing countries, particularly in the South Asian and the South East Asian region, including India, are expected to focus on certain specific issues and challenges facing them on account of a significant number of their motorised vehicles consisting of two-wheelers. India alone accounts for about 5 lakh road accidents every day in which 1.5 lakh people die. India has signed the Brasilia Declaration in 2015, which committed the world community to reducing the number of deaths in road accidents. During his stay at Stockholm, Gadkari will have bilateral dialogue with Swedish Minister for Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth, Minister for Foreign Trade Anna Hallberg, Minister for Business, Industry &amp; Innovation Ibrahim Baylan and also with the British Minister for Road Safety Baroness Vere. New Delhi, May 13 () Automaker Volkswagen India on Wednesday said it has introduced a comprehensive programme to implement safety and sanitisation standards across its facilities amid coronavirus pandemic. Under the #VWellnessIndia programme, company's 137 sales and 116 service stations will be covered across the country, Volkswagen India said in a statement.Through the programme, the company aims to provide and maintain health, hygiene and sanitisation standards across its facilities, it added.It is aimed at ensuring employee safety and re-building customer confidence and providing peace of mind when a customer decides to visit a Volkswagen dealership or service workshop, the company said."At Volkswagen, safety is in our DNA, which isn't limited to our vehicles but also extends to human well-being. COVID-19: Volkswagen India initiates safety programme across facilities

<keyword id="14678" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Mallya">Vijay Mallya</keyword>, who is under immense pressure from Indian state-run banks to repay the loans worth Rs 9000 crores that he had taken for the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, has stated that he wishes to honour his commitments, and has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vijay-Mallya-makes-another-attempt-this-time-he-is-offering-Rs-6000-crore-settlement/articleshow/51822342.cms">offered a new settlement</a> to the main lender SBI. "Performance of the company has been extremely good and there is no corporate governance issue that has impacted it owing to Mallya," he added. 
 
Executives aware of the matter said that Heineken has chosen to stand by Vijay Mallya in his tough times. 
 
"Mallya told us he has been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vijay-Mallya-safe-in-UK/articleshow/52041381.cms">wrongly accused</a> and has every intent to repay loans," said Sunil Alagh, also an independent board member. "For now, the board stands by him and sees no corporate governance issues and would monitor progress until the next (board) meeting in August." 
 
Mallya told the board he had been wrongly accused of money laundering and there was no evidence to justify the allegations. He said he was willing to return immediately if he was assured of<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/SC-says-Vijay-Mallya-will-have-to-declare-all-his-assets-to-the-Banks-including-that-of-his-wifes-and-childrens/articleshow/51994174.cms"> safe passage</a>. "We all unanimously expressed our concerns to Mr Mallya and he told us that he is making serious efforts to repay the banks," said CY Pal, independent board member. 
 
"He also told us he had tried to repay Kingfisher Airlines' employee dues through United Breweries Holdings but was delayed since the Karnataka High Court has frozen accounts and assets." He expressed his keenness to return to India if safe passage was assured, Pal added.

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Ride hailing platform Ola on Monday said it will expand its AI-enabled safety feature 'Guardian' to 17 cities across India and Australia.
 The 'Guardian' feature uses real-time data from rides to automatically detect irregular trip activity, including prolonged stops and unexpected route deviations.
 These alerts are flagged off in real-time to Ola's 24x7 Safety Response Team that immediately reach out to customers and drivers to confirm if they're safe and offer on-the-call assistance until ride completion.
 "After running a successful pilot across multiple cities in India and international markets, the 'Guardian' feature is going live in 16 Indian cities as well as Perth in Australia. Ola aims to take Guardian to more cities in the coming quarter," Ola said in a statement.
 It added that Ola Guardian is built on artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities on the Ola platform which enables it to continuously learn and evolve from millions of data points to improve risk signalling and instant resolution.
 Apart from the four metros, the feature will be available in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Indore and Trichy.
 "Our safety initiatives such as emergency button, facial recognition system for driver authentication, and one-time-password (OTP) system, are innovations that have all been built in India and now lead the global benchmarks for the mobility industry," Ola Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Arun Srinivas said.
 Ola said it also conducts mandatory verification through stringent criminal records checks as well as mandatory online training for drivers that includes modules like customer service and etiquette, platform usage, partner support, defensive driving amongst others.
 "To prevent driver impersonation, Ola has put in place a facial recognition system in place, which prompts on-duty drivers to upload a selfie and authenticate themselves multiple times in between rides. This feature is live across India and is also being piloted in various international markets," it added. SR SHW

We in Delhi NCR, witnessed first hand, in the last week of July, what chaos a downpour of rain can create, in an already faltering infrastructure. Stories of people actually being stranded in their cars from the previous evening to the next morning do exist!

Be self-sufficient: During monsoon one may get stuck on the road for long hours. It is advisable to carry your essential medications, first aid kit, flashlight, torch light, bottled water, dry food &amp; snacks, tissues, mobile charger/phone back-up, umbrella etc. in your car for dealing with such situations. 
 
Spare set of clothes/footwear: A spare set of clothes, towels, footwear are incredibly valuable in cases one gets totally drenched in the rain and has to drive back a long distance. Sitting/driving wet is never a good idea, as that can lead to infection or fever. A good practice is to also always keep an umbrella in the car too. 
 
Keep your friends and family well informed about your whereabouts: Driving in the monsoons entail long stretches of traffic jams and snarls that can last from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Whatever the case may be, it is always a advised to keep your family, friends, and colleagues informed of your situation so that they are prepared for any delays, and to mobilize help that might be needed depending upon the situation.

In a report by IndiaSpend in 2017, India recorded a sharp 36 percent spike in crimes against women passengers reported on Indian trains, according to <a href="http://164.100.158.235/question/annex/243/Au1584.docx" target="_blank">data </a>submitted by the railway ministry to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. It seems that the Indian Railways' Northeastern division has decided to counter the rising spate of brutalities and make its trains safer for women by installing panic buttons in coaches. The North Eastern Railways (NER) also plans to deploy women police personnel on suburban trains travelling during the night and to recruit women in the Railway Police Force (RPF), according to Sanjay Yadav, the chief press officer of the NER. The proposed panic buttons will accessible throughout the coach and will be directly connected to the guards' compartment. “These buttons, placed at convenient spots for the easy reach of women travelers above the electric switches, when pressed will denote the coach where there is emergency and the railway staff present in the train will be informed to promptly attend to the emergency,” Yadav said. At present, the only options women have is a stop-chain in coaches or a helpline number, via call or message, when faced with uncomfortable situations during their journey. Yadav also said that some other measures – colour-coding the coaches marked for women, installation of CCTV cameras with live feed to the authorities, and installation of wire mesh on windows – were also proposed and that the work on these proposals is “going on”. The panic button in coaches, however, may become a reality this year itself, Yadav said.
