New Delhi, The JEE mains examination have commenced from Tuesday. This is the first time that JEE examinations are being conducted under the country's <keyword id="2450716" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-education-policy">new education policy</keyword>. Under the new education policy, this time round, students are also appearing for the JEE mains examinations in Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Urdu, Odia, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati languages, besides English and Hindi. For the first time, students have got an opportunity to appear for exams in <keyword id="380963" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="13">13</keyword> <keyword id="475721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-languages">Indian languages</keyword>. These examinations are being conducted only in computer-based test CBDT mode. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has set up 852 examination centres across the country. During the examination held in September, 660 examination centres had been set up. 6,61,761 lakh candidates are appearing for this coveted computer-based entrance exam. Online examination for BE and B.Tech will be conducted in two shifts from February 24th to 26th. According to the National Testing Agency, the examination centre is also being fully sanitised between the two shifts. In the examination centres, face masks and sanitiser have been provided for students. The body temperature of students will also be checked with thermal guns before going to the examination centre. According to Vineet Joshi, Director General, National Testing Agency, all state governments and the police have appealed for a safe transport facility for students keeping in view the examination. The guidelines of the Union Health Ministry to prevent Coronavirus infections are being strictly followed. Students have been called to the examination centres two hours before the exam. The distance between two computers and between students will be maintained during the examination. The NTA has also conducted mock drills at the examination centres on Monday before the examination. "In view of the Corona epidemic, the eligibility criteria for obtaining 75 percentage points in class XII for admission to IITs this year has been done away with," said <keyword id="19402" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sadhana">Sadhana</keyword> Parashar, senior examination director of the National Examination Agency, which is conducting the JEE examinations. JEE Exam to be conducted in 13 Indian languages for the first time under the New Education Policy

<ul><li><keyword id="8883425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="savita-jadhav">Savita Jadhav</keyword> was an army kid but realised ‘the help’ in India’s former army areas doesn’t have equal rights when she returned to civilian life. </li><li>In 2001, she founded the <keyword id="8883423" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sadhana-institute-for-sustainable-development">Sadhana Institute for Sustainable Development</keyword> (SISD), to fight for change but no level of government wanted to take responsibility for this segment of the population. </li><li>There are over 62 cantonments areas all over India, with at least five million people excluded from basic rights because of mixed governance. </li></ul>India’s cantonment areas were set during the British era as temporary shelters for the soldiers. Over a hundred years down the line, the country’s gained independence and India’s in control of its own armed forces — yet these areas still struggle of human rights and remain sequestered from the constitution. "Even after independence, the governance in these areas stayed as when they were formed by the British Government," Savita Jadhav, founder of Sadhana Institute for Sustainable Development (SISD), told Business Insider in an interview. <div type="image" title="SISD" msid="74533963" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Community girls in Dehu Road cantonment at a meeting about protecting their rights&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

 These former army areas don’t have the same governance structure as the rest of India and the same rights don’t apply. The ‘help’ brought in to service the British — to help with sweeping, cleaning, washing, milk rearing and other tasks — is now isolated in slums without access to the most basic of welfare schemes. "Now, that these things are being taken care of by the government — they no longer want these communities staying here and they’re being called encroached people," explained Jadhav. To make matter worse, people within the community aren’t aware of their rights, or where to go to speak up on issues. While Jadhav’s work focuses on the cantonment area in Pune, there are over 62 cantonments areas all over India. Official data states that there are around 2.1 million people living there, however Jadhav believes at least five million people are being excluded because of convoluted governance. "People within the cantonment are not aware of the situation. It’s difficult for them to see that there are still pockets of people who are being treated unconstitutionally and discriminated against," she said. It’s dangerous work Born and brought up in the cantonment area, Jadhav enjoyed the luxuries of army life as a child when her grandfather was working at one of the army depots. But, when she returned to being a civilian, a grim reality came to light — that the community was clearly divided into two different strata. If you weren’t army personnel, you had no services or entitlement. Studying at schools set up by her grandfather, Jadhav studied psychology and worked in different areas of community developed. In 2001, she set out to solve the problem by setting up the SISD.  "In 2003, I was strategically working with children and people in the community. But there was a threat to me as well because it’s an army area. It’s difficult to work with a free mind since are limitations to what we can do in a defence area," said Jadhav. She wasn’t the only one who had to be careful. The people within the community were afraid to speak up about their own human rights for fear of the consequences. Even if they did gather the courage, they wouldn’t know where to go. "For local governance, in villages and other operations, people at least know where to go if they have a problem. Here, there is local governance in the form of cantonment boards, but there’s a big gap. People aren’t aware that they exist and don’t dare to go and speak about their situation, thinking that this is the army and nobody can do anything," explained Jadhav. Who’s responsible for the cantonment areas? When she started out, Jadhav didn’t know who to approach. SISD knocked on all doors to find try and find out who was responsible for this segment of the population and nobody seemed to want to step up. After conducting a number of activities — like studying malnutrition, hosting numerous press conferences, and putting pressure on all central, state and local governance — the state government finally agreed to put in some effort. In 2012, the Integrated Child Development Service Scheme (ICDS) — the biggest scheme in India for the welfare of children — was made accessible to the people living in the Pune cantonment area. "If the state government can implement one scheme, then they can implement other schemes as well. If they can implement in one cantonment, they can do in other cantonments as well," said Jadhav. Since the defence industry falls under the unplanned sector, there is no allocation of this segment of the population in any of India’s development plans. And the government believes that since defence is a strategic sector, it’s governed by national interest and security. Hence, they are reluctant to interfere. However, things are changing are more representation comes to the surface. People have more say in governance but it’s still a ways to go before their rights are at par with the rest of the country.

Despite the dangers, a woman is fighting for the rights of civilians in India's former army areas

The <keyword id="6356037" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="white-house">White House</keyword> has chosen an Indian-American woman to be honoured as "Champions of Change" for her efforts to protect environment and communities from the effects of climate change. 

	She is among 12 faith leaders selected for the honour, reported PTI. 
 

	Viswanath is the only Indian-American in the list and has been selected for her work to encourage Hindus to take care of the environment.
 

	She worked with women's and human rights organisations for almost three decades. Viswanath is co-founder and active board member of the 14-year-old front-line women's human rights organisation, Women for Afghan Women.
 The White House said: "Viswanath is also co-founder and board member of <keyword id="19402" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sadhana">Sadhana</keyword>: Coalition of Progressive Hindus, living and building a Hinduism that prioritises social justice, and upholding the Hindu principles of ekatva (oneness), ahimsa (non-violence) and sadhana (faith in action)." 

	It added that she is being honoured for her work with Sadhana. 
 

	Born in Chennai, Viswanath says her childhood was steeped in ritualistic practice of Hinduism.
 

	She added: "I have always been secure in my identity as a Hindu. Growing up, I thought a lot about faith and religion, but I also had a very strong sense of social justice-what was fair." 
 

	"I imbibed profound lessons of love and justice from my religious upbringing, from the stories we were told, the prayers we learned, the texts we read. I went on as an adult to devote my life to advancing social justice causes, particularly women's human rights," she said.
 

	"If Hinduism cares deeply about all people and all living beings, then there must be an active, vocal Hindu movement for social justice and human rights today," she said, adding that a small group of like-minded individuals got together to explore this question and Sadhana was born.
 

	One of the project of Sadhana is Project Prithvi - a grassroots green project, which mobilise Hindus, especially the youth, to live out the principle of ahimsa by taking care of the environment.
 The organization is presently working on a project to clean up specific beaches in <keyword id="627536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jamaica-Bay">Jamaica Bay</keyword> where Hindus worship and litter the place.

"From the energy sector, we continue to remain bullish on ONGC and Reliance. With gains of over 1.60%, the FMCG sector has given a highest-ever closing which resulted in a fresh all-time high breakout but for confirmation, follow-up buying is a must. Selective buying was witnessed in the metal segment where HindCopper and Nalco have provided a firm breakout. Some stocks from mid and smallcap segments look strong namely, Kopran, Olectra Greentech, Sadhana Nitrochem, Sunteck Realty, and Ultramarine Pigments", he notes.

Five AR Rahman songs that went on to become global hits

The villagers of Hirpodi in Velhe taluka of Pune district are making steady progress in turning a barren hill into a forest with the help of contour trenches and drought-tolerant trees. Janabai Laxman Kuditkar (70) points to the hill behind her newly-built pucca house while explaining how barren it was when they started off. "There were only a few scattered trees on the top. Until about 10 years ago, we were cultivating ragi and sesame. But long summers and water scarcity made everything difficult," she says. Consequently, she sold that piece of land to an NRI couple. The hill covering about five acres along the slope now belongs to Ravindra and Sadhana Swar, who approached <keyword id="339271" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="forrest" source="Orion">FORREST</keyword> (Forest Regeneration and Environment Sustainability Trust) - an <keyword id="6366591" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ngo" source="Orion">NGO</keyword> dealing in biodiversity - to restore it in a way that would benefit the village that sits along its lower reaches. Responding to 101Reporters by email, the Swars said that they bought the land, sight unseen, to help the owner who was deep in debt. "The original purpose was to build an old age home. But when we finally visited the site ourselves, we found there was no proper access road or any facilities nearby. It was just a barren hill." And Sadhana Swar, having something of a green finger herself, decided to spend some money to develop this into a green zone, even a sanctuary for birds. "This land is located half a kilometre from the village, at an elevation of 760m from the mean sea level. Except for some non-native Eucalyptus trees planted near the peak by the forest department, the slopes were denuded of any vegetation. There was just some seasonal grass and a few shrubs," says Neha Singh, the founder and director of FORREST. Located 60 km from Pune, Hirpodi is home to about 900 people. Singh and her team decided to work on two fronts - water and forestry. "We planned to dig contour trenches and plant drought-tolerant native species on their bunds. The first step of marking trenches all over the hill began in July 2019," she tells 101Reporters. Trenching is one of the major environmental engineering measures for conserving water and controlling soil erosion in non-arable lands. Areas with steep slopes are more prone to soil erosion, particularly if they lack vegetative cover. "Velha gets good rainfall, but the water drains out very quickly due to the slope. Almost no water percolates in the soil. Contour trenching solves this problem," explains Singh. "We found a part on the slope where soil erosion was much more pronounced. Hillsides are more prone to gullying (the process by which deep channels or gullies are created by flowing water) when they are cleared of vegetation through deforestation, overgrazing or forest fires. To arrest soil erosion, we covered a small patch with dense plantations." The restoration plans began when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. Holding meetings with villagers was not even a possibility then. So, her team tried different methods to increase local participation. "We decided to involve villagers by appointing a local project coordinator for the work, and <keyword id="14981722" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vitthal-rajiwade" source="Orion">Vitthal Rajiwade</keyword> was keen on helping us when he realised how much the village will benefit," says Prachi Pawar, assistant director, FORREST. Anything related to water usually piques the interest of people here. The promise of improvement in groundwater levels, prevention of flooding during monsoons, and the prospect of income from minor non-timber forest produce was enough to convince them to join hands. "The NGO provided us with trenching tools and we got the bamboo supplied from the village," adds Reshma <keyword id="213779" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sonawane" source="Orion">Sonawane</keyword>, <keyword id="14981721" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajiwade" source="Orion">Rajiwade</keyword>'s neighbour. The locals were paid in cash for all the materials and the strenuous work of walking uphill with tools, plants, compost, soil nutrients and bamboo. "We had to make several trips along with the NGO volunteers, and they offered us money that helped us get through those pandemic-weary days," Sonawane gratefully remembers. The joint team of volunteers and villagers built around 250 contour trenches and planted 530 trees over their bunds. "We felt that native forest trees are stronger and they adapt easily to adverse climatic conditions. Most of them have medicinal properties and are fruit-bearing, like say Reetha (soapnut), Baheda (Terminalia bellerica) and Harad (Termialia chebula)," informs Pawar. The trees coming under the ficus genus were chosen to enhance the green cover, as their fruits cater to both birds and mammals even during drought. "About 200 ficus trees have been planted to this end," Pawar says. Once the trenching and planting were done, 40 villagers collected thorny bushes from nearby hills and carried them to the site to build a fence that would protect the plants from free-grazing cattle. Only 300 of the total 530 trees remain, with the rest lost in forest fires. Rajiwade, a wrestler and rice cultivator, understands the importance of maintaining sources of irrigation. "When we started planting trees, I did not realise how important it was. But now, we have pits filled with enough water for our crops," he beams. The Rajiwades have assumed the role of overseeing the maintenance of the young trees, which includes watering them at least four times a month during non-monsoon months with the help of the community. "The trees are still small and need at least three years to grow. Once they grow tall, I hope there will be even more rainfall in the area," Rajiwade says. He and his family - comprising his wife and three college-going children - had motivated many to join the project in its early days. Sonawane, on her part, exhorted women to lend a helping hand. Singh believes that her NGO is no longer needed here. "The point of conservation is that it should be self-sustaining. Even in the absence of any monetary benefit, the community should take care of their environment. And I think this has already happened here," she concludes. The <keyword id="37102" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="Orion">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> government on Friday decided to rename <keyword id="13543161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="konaseema-district" source="Orion">Konaseema district</keyword> as Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district, a month after the district was rocked by violence protesting against the proposal. The state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister <keyword id="12659379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="y-s-jagan-mohan-reddy" source="Orion">Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy</keyword> approved the gazette notification issued on May 18 to rename the district. Police have stepped up security across the district, especially district headquarters Amalapuram which witnessed mob violence on May 24 against the government's move. Dozens of people, including 25 police personnel, were injured in the violence. Protesters opposing the proposal to rename the district set afire houses of state minister P. Viswaroop and MLA P. Satish and also torched a few police and private vehicles. In view of the Cabinet decision, police made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any protests. Additional forces were deployed in the town and in other parts of the district to prevent any untoward incident. A tight vigil was being maintained on the organisations which had organised massive protests leading to the violence last month. The state government on May 18 issued a notification inviting objections and suggestions on the proposal to rename the Konaseema district as Dr Ambedkar Konaseema district. It sought suggestions and objections from the people residing within Konaseema. The 30 days period to send objections and suggestions came to an end last week. The Konaseema district was carved out from East Godavari with Amalapuram as its headquarters. It was one of the 13 districts created on April 4, taking the total number of districts in the state to 26. The government had named some of the districts after prominent personalities like freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, former chief minister and TDP founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who was popular as NTR. Similarly, two new districts were named after saint composer Tallapaka Annamacharya (Annamayya) and Satya Sai Baba (Sri Satya Sai). The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy had come under criticism from Dalit groups and others for not naming a district after Ambedkar. However, the decision by the government to rename Konaseema district drew flak from some groups. Hundreds of people had participated in the protest called by Konaseema Sadhana Samithi (KSS) on May 24 and this led to violence. Investigation by the police has revealed that two dominant castes in the district -- Kapus and Setti Balijasa -- came together to oppose the move to rename Konaseema district after Ambedkar. According to police, the coming together of these communities intensified the protests against the renaming of the district as more people participated in the agitation. Andhra Pradesh government renames Konaseema district after Dr B R Ambedkar

He was known as '<keyword id="2986120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhartiputra" source="Orion">Dhartiputra</keyword>' and remained a true son of the soil. His style of politics was firmly grounded and success and failure did not affect him. <keyword id="6357168" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mulayam-singh-yadav" source="Orion">Mulayam Singh Yadav</keyword> was one of the last of his generation of politicians who kept his values intact and did not corporatize his politics. For him, the last man in the line remained important - whether it was from his family, his village or his state. He was a friend of friends and even turned his foes into friends. <keyword id="25541" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mulayam-singh" source="Orion">Mulayam Singh</keyword> had first contested the Assembly election from Karhal in 1967 on Ram Manohar Lohia's Samyukta Socialist Party ticket. Groomed by the likes of Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain, Yadav served eight terms as the member of the state Assembly. In 1975, during Indira Gandhi's imposition of the Emergency, Yadav was arrested and kept in custody for 19 months. He first became a state minister in 1977. Later, in 1980, he became the president of the Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh which later became a part of the Janata Dal. In 1982, he was elected leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and held that post until 1985. When the Lok Dal party split, Yadav launched the Krantikari Morcha party. <keyword id="42422" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mulayam" source="Orion">Mulayam</keyword> Singh Yadav first became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989. Being a shrewd politician, he had the uncanny knack of sensing the upheavals in politics. After the collapse of the V.P. Singh national government in November 1990, Yadav joined Chandra Shekhar's Janata Dal (Socialist) party and continued in office as the chief minister with the support of the Congress. His government fell when the Congress withdrew support in April 1991 and Mulayam Singh lost to the BJP in the midterm elections. In 1992, Yadav founded his own Samajwadi Party and then allied with the Bahujan Samaj Party for the elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, held in November 1993. The alliance between the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party prevented the return of the BJP to power in the state and Yadav became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh with the support of Congress and Janata Dal. Mulayam's stand on the movement for demanding separate statehood for Uttarakhand was as much controversial as his stand on Ayodhya movement in 1990 was. The firing on Ayodhya activists and then Uttarakhand activists at Muzaffarnagar on October 2, 1994 remained black spots of his regime. In 1995, the SP-BSP alliance broke with the infamous State Guest House incident but Mulayam Singh Yadav made sure that his party bounced back to power in 2003. He was sworn in as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the third time in September 2003. Yadav contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Mainpuri while he was still Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. However, he later resigned from the Lok Sabha and continued as chief minister till 2007 when the SP lost to the BSP in the state elections. Mulayam Singh Yadav was one of the few politicians who blatantly promoted nepotism and had no qualms about it. At any given time, there were about a dozen family members in politics in Uttar Pradesh. "He always pushed us into politics and asked us to make a career for ourselves. It was always he who decided what was best for us and took keen interest in our careers," said one of his nephews. Mulayam Singh valued his friends deeply. Whether it was Beni Prasad Varma, or Azam Khan or Mohan Singh or Janeshwar Mishra - each one had a special place in his life. His war with Balram Singh Yadav and Darshan Singh Yadav in Etawah had acquired legendary proportions, but Mulayam, over a period of time, managed to change his equations and both became his friends. Mulayam shared a love-hate relationship with the media. His famous 'Halla Bol' agitation against some newspapers grabbed national headlines. However, Mulayam made sure that his individual relationship with journalists never deteriorated. Even if he ticked off a scribe for his writing, he made sure to call out to him and mend fences at the earliest. For party workers, he remained their beloved 'Netaji' - one who was always approachable and available. "I do not remember a single occasion when I went to meet Mulayam Singh and came back without doing so. He remembered even the smallest party worker by name and it was this that endeared him to everyone," said a senior party MLA. Mulayam Singh Yadav was one chief minister who enjoyed full loyalty from his bureaucrats. He took tough decisions and his officers implemented them. In fact, many claim that the politicisation of bureaucracy began only after Mulayam became the chief minister. In the past five years, after Akhilesh Yadav took over the reins of the party, Mulayam had withdrawn into a shell. The changing dynamics in the party reduced the stream of visitors into a trickle and Mulayam - for the first time, became a lonely man. "He would often ask us if there was anyone waiting to meet him. He loved going to the party office and relished the hustle-bustle there. At home, he had almost nothing to do and this bothered him," said one of his close staff members. Mulayam was disturbed by the recent happenings in his family -- daughter-in-law Aparna joining the BJP, the split between son Akhilesh and brother Shivpal. He made no public mention of it but it was clear that he was deeply affected by what was happening. The demise of his second wife Sadhana Gupta Yadav in July this year, sources say, left Mulayam distressed and lonely and this led to a deterioration in his physical condition. Mulayam Singh Yadav: The Dhartiputra of national politics

The prestigious Joint Entrance <keyword id="49591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="examination">Examination</keyword> (<keyword id="6392660" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE">JEE</keyword>) Advanced 2021 test has been postponed in view of the coronavirus situation in the country. Since the <keyword id="9859756" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Mains-Examination">JEE Mains examination</keyword> could not be held at the scheduled time (May 24-28), so the <keyword id="1126172" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Advanced">JEE Advanced</keyword> examination, which was going to be held on July 3, has also been postponed, the <keyword id="55119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword>, <keyword id="6357441" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kharagpur">Kharagpur</keyword> announced. The Union <keyword id="181369" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Education-ministry">Education Ministry</keyword> had decided to conduct the JEE Mains examination four times in the current year. Candidates can appear in all four examinations of which their best test scores will be considered for appearing for the JEE Advanced exam. However, only two of the four sessions of JEE Mains examination have been conducted till now. <keyword id="581232" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword>'s Senior Examination Director, Sadhana Parashar, said the first session of the JEE Mains examination was held in February this year and more than 6,20,000 students appeared. The second session was held in March with more than 5,56,000 students appearing. The third session of the JEE Mains examination was scheduled to be held from April 27 to 30, but had to be postponed in view of the second wave of pandemic. In the sane way, the fourth session to be held on May 24-28 was also postponed. According to the Education Ministry, students will be informed 15 days in advance before the test is conducted. The results of the JEE Main Exam Session 2 which were held in March have been already declared. These exams were conducted in 12 foreign cities and 334 Indian cities. Due to the second wave of Covid-19, the Union Education Ministry had decided to postpone all offline examinations scheduled in the month of May. This decision will be applicable to all central higher educational institutions across the country. Such higher educational institutions, which receive financial aid from the government, will also have to postpone these too. JEE Advanced exam postponed due to surge in COVID-19 cases in the country

Though anticipated, when it became official that the Melody Queen of India, <keyword id="31278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lata-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Lata Mangeshkar</keyword>, is no longer among us, it hit the collective consciousness of the nation like a sledgehammer. The only consolation was that she may have passed on, but her voice, which moved our hearts and provided succour to our souls for more than seven decades, will forever be with us. Like all inspirational stories, Lataji's early struggle to establish herself in the 1940s is one that we cannot ever forget. In those days, she would take a BEST bus and travel from her south Mumbai home regularly to meet Naushad Ali at his Khar West bungalow or in the studios, hoping for a 'singing break' under the legendary music maker's baton. In the vicious Mumbai monsoon, she would come to Naushad's home, wearing her trademark sari, carrying an umbrella but totally drenched, shivering and barely able to speak, let alone sing. The music director would offer her piping hot tea and cookies to soothe her, but no songs ... yet ... . "I felt her voice was not yet 'ripe' for my style of music," said Naushad, the perfectionist, in a conversation with this writer. He was trying to justify not giving her an early break. "To improve her diction and control over words, I advised her to learn and practice Urdu, which she did ... and finally, she was ready to record for me." The first choices of Naushad were the reigning stalwarts -- Noorjehan, Suraiya, Shamshad Begum, Zohra Ambalewali, to name a few. With time, trained by her father, Dinananth Mangeshkar, Lataji grasped the maestro's advice and got her first major hit -- 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949) -- composed by her mentor Naushad. With it, she 'arrived' in the film industry. Thereafter, top music directors of the era wooed her, and they included Sachin Dev Burman, Husan Lal-Bhagat Ram (brothers), Ghulam Haider, Sardar Malik, Ghulam Mohammed, Jaidev, Salil Chowdhary, C. Ramchandra, Shankar-Jaikishan (partners), Roshan, Madan Mohan, M. Zahur Khayyam, Kalyanji-Anandji (brothers), Laxmikant-Pyarelal (partners), Sonik-Omi (uncle-nephew), Ravi Kumar Sharma or 'Ravi', Sudhir Phadke, Sajjad Hussain, Usha Khanna, and even A.R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan, Anand-Milind and Jatin-Lalit, among the younger crop of baton wielders. Producers and directors vied for Lataji's unique voice and style for their top heroines, especially because she could 'mould' her voice to suit most heroines. Without doubt, she had become the first among women singers, a position that Mohammed Rafi enjoyed among the men. Yet, there was a music director who remained aloof from Lataji -- with haughty pride -- and yet rose to the top echelons of the music industry -- the incomparable O.P. Nayyar. "I found Lata's voice too thin, too shrill, which did not suit my compositions," Nayyar had once said, claiming he was "the only music director who succeeded in Bollywood without Lata's voice". He added: "I needed a more vivacious, richer, healthier voice of, say, Shamshad Begum, Geeta Ghosh-Dutt, Asha Bhosale." One woman singer, Suman Kalyanpur, was blessed with a voice rivalling that of Lataji's, but she was content being in the shadows, yet she thrived on enduring masterpieces composed by some of the music directors. As Lataji's singing style matured under master music directors, her voice helped heroines who acted or danced to her tunes catapult to stardom, such as Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Ameeta, Beena Rai, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Tanuja, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Nutan, Saira Bano, Sadhana Shivdasani, Babita Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi, Neetu Singh, Madhuri Dixit, and many others in the post-1980s, right down to the youngsters, notably, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Karisma Kapoor. After the exit of Noorjehan from India and the fading away of other stalwart female singers, by the late 1950s/early 1960s, Lataji was firmly perched on the top of the heap and brooked no nonsense from anyone -- producers, directors, composers, siblings or contemporaries -- attempting to clamber anywhere close to her roost. Bollywood is full of stories of how Lataji ring-fenced her position till the very end, often raising the hackles of her female peers, although male singers, such as Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Manna Dey (all deceased) and others, chose to maintain a professional rapport with her. Nevertheless, there were tales of how Rafi once bore the brunt of her "other side", or certain composers quivering as she gently declined to sing for them after they allegedly dared to commission some other female singers, for whatever reason. Of course, powerful filmmakers such as Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Kamal Amrohi, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra and the likes had no time for tantrums. Born on September 28, 1929, as the oldest child of a musically inclined family in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) -- comprising father Dinanath, Lataji, Meena (Khadilkar), Asha (Bhosale), Usha and sole brother Hridaynath -- she was tutored by her dad from the age of five and also acted in his musical stage plays, till death in 1942. Helped by a close family friend, Master Vinayak D. Karnataki, she got a foothold in singing and acting that year with a first Marathi song and a maiden Hindi song in 1943 before shifting to the film industry capital in 1945. In Bombay (now, Mumbai), she learnt classical music and continued singing the odd songs, till her big break with 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahinka Na Chhoda' ('Majboor', 1948), with full help from Ghulam Haider, whom she later described as her "godfather". With a colossus such as Noorjehan still around, Lataji continued her with a few more hits -- 'Aayega Aanewala' ('Mahal', 1949) and 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949), heralding her entry with a bang in big-time Bollywood. Simultaneously, she sang in different Indian languages with aplomb, non-film songs, with her range encompassing classical, tragic, melodious, erotic, melancholic, light, mischievous, depending on the composer, or the heroine, or the song situation. After the seniors passed away or faded out, Lataji sang expertly and easily with the gen next of male singers such as S.P. Balasubramaniam, Amit Kumar, Shabbir Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Anwar, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam, and astounded her listeners with the seemingly "undying" power and youthfulness of her golden voice. Over the decades, she was decorated with a multitude of rewards and honours -- three Padma awards, five Filmfare Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award -- capped by the Bharat Ratna in 2001. More than that, state governments named awards and institutions after her. Lataji sang at prestigious live concerts or charitable events, enthralling global audiences, picked up more overseas accolades, such as France's highest civilian honour, Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007, briefly dabbled in high-end merchandise, such as signature jewellery and perfumes, launched a production and music house, and entered into international music collaborations. Death has only removed her physically. The legacies she leaves behind will outlive her for decades. What answer does a father have when his son asks whether he will be able to celebrate his birthday in June. Then there is the kid who is competes with his parents for TV time – cartoons or grim news programs? And perhaps not surprisingly many want to beat up China .Parents across the country, and the world, are grappling with an unprecedented challenge of dealing with their children who are too old to be shushed or placated and too young to understand the inexplicable situation the world has found itself in. journalists across India shared experiences and conversations with their children aged 2 to 13, which ranged from cute to poignant and heart-wrenching to humorous, and some with sagacity far beyond their age. Here are some of the experiences from around the country: Niheer Waghmare, all of 2 years 4 months, is a diehard fan of his father Aditya's Royal Enfield motorcycle. A short ride around Aurangabad is mandatory every day. When the lockdown started, this practice stopped. Now the bike engine is started every morning for him to sit on its petrol tank and drink his milk. His mother told him: "There is a threat called corona on roads outside. It will attack and injure us". He understood it's something dangerous. "He said, 'once corona ends, I will go to the hills'. For now, I show the hills to him from the roof of my house," said Waghmare. ---- Three-year-old Ira was never too keen to go to playschool. But since the lockdown she's been insisting on being with her playgroup. So her mother, Arundhati Pattabhiraman, dresses up Ira every morning and lines up her toys to create an environment similar to her play school. To make her understand about coronavirus, "we made it into a story that it is a monster which will catch her if she steps out of the house or if she doesn't wash her hands. So now every time she speaks to her grandparents, she ends the conversation with 'wash your hands or coronavirus will get you'." ----- Anvay Deshmukh, 4, believes he can beat the "Corona-demon" in a fist fight. He also checks out the main gate of the house a couple of times in a day, thinking he may spot the demon so that he can fight with him. "We have informed him that he is not supposed to touch him and keep his hands clean so that coronavirus will not recognise him. He has started joyously clapping every time after washing his hands" said his father Nikhil Deshmukh in Mumbai."We had to come up with a story of Corona-demon who is on the loose and is wandering on the streets," said Deshmukh. "He at times believes that." ----- Ananya Jaiswal, who is 5, used to go on a horse cart ride every weekend, followed by her favourite cheese dosa and watermelon juice. Accepting that the horse cart ride is not possible now, she has found an alternative -- her soft toy, a huge Winnie the Pooh, on which she sits and pretends to be on a horse. As for the cheese dosa, "we try to make her happy by making her favourite delicacies," said her mother Komal Panchamatia in Mumbai. The other day, she chose to wear her party dress and got ready with matching accessories. She wore it throughout the day, said Panchamatia, who like everyone else is working from home. "Ananya has by now understood that I have a teacher and I have been given homework to do every day." ____ Mihika Menon, 8, is disturbed every time her father talks about the rising number of coronavirus cases. Unable to keep up her routine of visiting the British Library every two weeks, she is re-reading old books, especially the Thea Stilton series. ----- Shaalvi Kolhatkar in Pune turned three on March 20 and celebrated her birthday without a party or friends. She insisted on going out but her parents keep her at home by engaging her in producing colourful decoration, cake baking and photo sessions. "Her non-stop chatter keeps us refreshed and motivated in this hard time," said her father, Sandip Kolhatkar. ----- Airah Zaidi, 7, whose school in Ghaziabad broke for the two-week recess on March 9 before the start of new session, is bored to death and now longs to go to school. So what does she miss most about school? "Seeing teachers get angry and students being naughty," said Airah. She tells her dad that Chinese people should not be eating "bats and insects" which she believes is the reason for the spread of coronavirus. "Chinese people should spread whatever disease they want in their country but not in India." "I want to hit the Chinese people on their head," says her brother, Wali Zaidi, 4. ----- It has been difficult for Sanjay Ganjoo in Chandigarh to restrict his younger son Saiyam, 8, indoors. A family trip to Mumbai planned for March 23 was cancelled and Saiyam doesn't understand why. Ganjoo has no answer when Saiyam asked him: "Will the lockdown last till June and will I not be able to celebrate my birthday?" ----- On March 15 when the Maharashtra government ordered all schools to shut, five-year-old Arjun Tiwari was excited, no questions asked. Now his only concern is will normalcy return before his sixth birthday in June. ----- Alya Srivastava, 13, is sad that the celebration of her best friend's birthday on Monday, has been cancelled. "Why are we being deprived of this little fun and enjoyment. Why there is no cure for the disease? When will I be able to go to school?" ----- Anushka Makne's virtual school session began from April 1. On March 31 night, she refused to go to sleep early. He has decided to break his piggy bank and donate coins in the CM Relief Fund to fight COVID-19. ----- Ten-year-old Kartik Mehra, a student of Gyan Bharti School in New Delhi has clear ideas about coronavirus. "Coronavirus is made in China. I have seen in news, it got leaked when people were shot in a market in China. I know it is dangerous so I don't go anywhere." ---- For Dahliya Tyagi, 13, being with parents at a stretch for days is new is to her as she is used to one of them being absent. Her mother Richa Tyagi keeps her and her son Kayan, 10, busy by making them take care of their clothes and keeping the rooms clean. Initially they rebelled an accused the mother of tormenting them but have gradually come around. Now, Dahliya says she is "really thankful" for what the domestic help does in normal times. "I was happy that she has started valuing people around her and has learnt to show gratitude.
