Mid-tier IT companies expected to outperform the big guns

According to the post, the SWC reached out to the e-commerce giant via email on Wednesday requesting the company "immediately put in place systems that will end the monetization of hateful products."The human-rights organization said Amazon allowed various businesses to market and sell items associated with neo-Nazis, including swastika necklaces and face masks. "Money is a lot more tight these days with all our upfront expenses," Nick Olsen, a doctoral student in chemical physics, said.In a survey conducted by Columbia's Arts and Sciences Graduate Council last year, 54% of respondents said they spent more than 50% of their income on rent.Graduate student workers also told Insider the school provided a schedule for when they would be paid via the new system. Seven students provided pay stubs and emails showing that the school had been late on payments based on that schedule - one of those workers said they'd received only one of the four checks promised to them so far.Mandi Spishak-Thomas, a social-work doctoral candidate and member of the bargaining committee, showed Insider emails between her and an administrator in June 2020 in which the admin offered to send a loan via Venmo to Spishak-Thomas after the admin had submitted a timesheet late. (Social-work doctoral candidates were paid semimonthly at the time.)"So many of us in my department are paid late every semester, it's just become something we assume will happen at this point, and many of us have zero cushion to handle these late payments," Spishak-Thomas said. The SWC has said dozens of faculty members have committed to either canceling classes or holding them off-campus or online to respect picket lines."Generally, the students I talk to are really supportive because they are aware of the difficulties graduate students are facing," Olsen said."We get characterized as irrational, but we're really just asking to survive in New York City," Ethan Jacobs, a philosophy doctoral candidate and member of the bargaining committee, added.Columbia declined to offer comment on the strike and bargaining sessions. The Warriors won the game 113-111, outscoring the Spurs by 25 points without Leonard for most of the second half.While it was unclear whether Pachulia's foot placement was intentional, Popovich said it was "a totally unnatural close-out" and listed past incidents he considers dirty plays by Pachulia:"A two-step, lead-with-your-foot close-out is not appropriate. It's dangerous. It's unsportsmanlike. It's just not what anybody does to anybody else."And this particular individual has a history with that kind of action. You can go back and look at Dallas games where he got a flagrant two for elbowing Patty Mills. The play where he took Kawhi down and locked his arm in Dallas and could have broken his arm. Ask David West, his current teammate, how things went when Zaza was playing for Dallas and he and David got into it."And then think about the history he's had and what that means to a team, what happened last night: a totally unnatural closeout that the league has outlawed years ago and pays great attention to it."Popovich then angrily broke down how Leonard's injury could affect the Spurs' title chances:"You wanna know if that lessens our chances or not? We're playing very possibly the best team in the league. We don't know what's gonna happen in the East. And 9.75 people out of 10 would figure the Warriors would beat the Spurs."Well, we've had a pretty damn good season. We've played fairly well in the playoffs. I think we're getting better. Popovich said the Spurs expected Leonard to miss Game 2.As many people pointed out, Pachulia's so-called foot trick has been around the NBA for years. Former Spurs wing Bruce Bowen was perhaps the player most known to slide his foot under jump shooters, risking potential injury. The Spurs retired Bowen's number, leading some to say Popovich's rant was hypocritical.After Game 1, Leonard said he didn't think Pachulia was trying to intentionally hurt him. Pachulia also defended himself, saying big men often get called for many unintentional fouls.Popovich, however, brushed that aside."I don't give a damn about intent," he said. "You still go to jail for manslaughter."Here's the play:Popovich likely was trying to draw the league's attention to other fouls the Warriors may have committed during the game, perhaps even trying to get it to punish Pachulia. Gregg Popovich slams Warriors' Zaza Pachulia for controversial foul that injured Kawhi Leonard in Game 1 of Western Conference Finals

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Wikimedia CommonsReception Center of the "Blue House," the South Korean presidential residence in Seoul.</div></div></div>Although North Korea may bear the brunt of the jokes on the international stage, it wasn't always like this.On January 21, 1968, 15 years after the Korean War, North Korean commandos were <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/18/world/asia/18seoul.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0" target="_blank">caught</a> attempting to assassinate South Korean President Park Chung-hee.Dressed as South Korean soldiers, these operators managed to cross the border and come a few hundred yards shy of the Blue House, the traditional residence of South Korea's presidents.After an intense <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/15/world/south-korean-movie-unlocks-door-on-a-once-secret-past.html" target="_blank">firefight</a> with US and South Korean troops, 29 of the 31 commandos were either killed or committed suicide. Of the surviving two, one escaped back to North Korea to eventually become a general, while the other one was captured, pardoned, and eventually became a Presbyterian minister in South Korea.In retaliation for North Korea's attempts, South Korea <a href="http://foreignpolicy.com/2014/12/24/north-korea-the-assassination-nation-the-interview-sony-hack/" target="_blank">devised</a> their own assassination plot three months later. After assembling 31 of their own recruits, most of them petty criminals, Seoul created Unit 684. The unit was tasked with traveling to Pyongyang to kill North Korean President Kim Il Sung - a claim that South Korea in the past neither confirmed nor denied.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Silmido_map_nasa_world_wind.jpg">Public Domain</a></div></div></div>The rag-tag band of recruits, who were taken from prisons and the streets, were shipped off to the island of Silmido in the Yellow Sea after being promised wages and jobs should they accomplish their mission, sources <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/15/world/south-korean-movie-unlocks-door-on-a-once-secret-past.html" target="_blank">claimed</a>.''They were the kind who would get into street fights a lot,'' explained Yang Dong Su, one of the guards, in a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/15/world/south-korean-movie-unlocks-door-on-a-once-secret-past.html" target="_blank">New York Times interview</a> from 2004.The unit's training regimen was supposedly intense: over 20% of the recruits died during training, and South Korean courts later <a href="http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2920722" target="_blank">ruled</a> that it had "violated their basic human rights."However, all that training eventually came to naught. Yang claims that in the morning of the mutiny, much of the training cadre were still intoxicated from drinking for the first time in three years on the island. "For the first time, the night before the uprising, about 10 of us left the island and brought large quantities of alcohol back to the military compound," he <a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/common_prog/newsprint.php?ud=20050824000044&amp;dt=2" target="_blank">said</a> in The Korea Herald. "And we drank with ... permission."After breaking into a captain's room, the recruits killed their officer by hitting his forehead with a hammer before continuing to kill all but six of the training officers. Eventually, the renegade unit got off the island and hijacked a bus to head towards Seoul; however, after being stopped by authorities, they blew themselves up with hand grenades.''They revolted because they felt that they were never going to get the chance to go to North Korea and that they would never be allowed to leave the island,'' <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/15/world/south-korean-movie-unlocks-door-on-a-once-secret-past.html" target="_blank">said</a> Yang, who was shot in the neck during the revolt. For decades, South Korea has denied claims of the unit's existence and there were even reports that the government <a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/common_prog/newsprint.php?ud=20050824000044&amp;dt=2" target="_blank">labeled</a> the recruits "armed communist agents" after their revolt. It was not until 2006 that the government <a href="http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2920722" target="_blank">finally released</a> an official report of the unit and their training program. And it wasn't until 2010 that the Seoul Central District Court <a href="http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2920722">ruled</a> that the family members of Unit 684's recruits were entitled to an equivalent of $217,000 in damages, down from their original claim of $574,000, for the deaths of the recruits and the subsequent emotional suffering."The Silmido agents were not informed of the level of danger involved with their training …," the ruling <a href="http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2920722">stated</a>.But there exists some skepticism behind the alleged harsh treatment of the recruits. Kim Yi-tae, the longest serving platoon leader at Silmido, recounts his tenure on the island."We never treated [them] badly," Kim <a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/common_prog/newsprint.php?ud=20050824000044&amp;dt=2" target="_blank">said</a> to The Korea Herald. "They were not there by force. South Korea once trained a secret unit to assassinate the North Korean president - but it backfired completely

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.crowdstrike.com/sites/all/themes/crowdstrike2/css/imgs/platform/CrowdStrike_Global_Threat_Report_2013.pdf">via Crowdstrike</a></div></div></div>US cyber security firm Crowdstrike <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/countries-targeted-by-russia-hack-2014-1">recently released</a> its 2013 <a href="http://www.crowdstrike.com/sites/all/themes/crowdstrike2/css/imgs/platform/CrowdStrike_Global_Threat_Report_2013.pdf">Global Threat Report</a> on state and non-state sponsored cyber espionage campaigns, and it has some scary implications.
In short, if the last handful of years were about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-protect-against-chinese-hackers-2013-2">spearphishing attacks</a>, the next few will be about "Strategic Web Compromises."
SWCs function completely different from spearphishing attacks.
Spearphishing is essentially an email that looks like it comes from a legit source - a coworker, an Internet company, or a friendly professional. Inside the email is either a link or an attachment.
That attachment/link is often titled something hyper-relevent - like "2014 W2," or, in the case of a bunch of diplomats attending a G20 in Paris, "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nicolas-sarkozys-naked-wife-used-as-bait-by-g20-hackers-2013-12">Naked Pics Of Nicholas Sarkozy's Wife</a>."
An SWC - what IT pros call a "watering hole" attack - is a much more passive attempt at getting malware onto the target computer.
Justin Seitz, senior security researcher at Immunity Inc., equated it to dumping sugar into the underground tanks at the gas stations your target most loves to patronize.
Just like spearphishing attacks, SWCs require the adversary to know their target well. But instead of emailing the targets - heading to the parking lot and trying to dump it right into their car - hackers place the malware on a website they know the target is likely to visit.
"Car drivers inherently trust that the gas stations are providing good fuel to them, and don't think twice about filling up," he concluded.
But the analogy isn't quite the same, Seitz noted, because a lot of these compromised sites offer subscription PDF downloads or other services that "regular Internet users" are unlikely to frequent.
In the report, Crowdstrike details the advantages to this type of attack:
- Now that it has been thoroughly reported on in the media, employees at these companies are less likely to click on malicious/suspicious links or attachments.
- Increasingly agile email filters block spearphishing attempts.
- Spearphishing leaves more of a trace, so attribution to the attacker is much easier. SWCs don't leave as many "marks on the tools" that would identify the makers.
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said at Davos that <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/24/5340488/eric-schmidt-google-chairman-says-encryption-could-give-people-voice">he suspects 85% of all industry</a> cyber espionage emanates from China. Crowdstrike details an increasing amount of Russian attempts to hack energy companies.
Crowdstrike also predicts that SWCs will become increasingly popular in the next year, which begs the question, is there anything companies can do to protect themselves?
"Short answer? No," says Seitz. "Stay up to date with your patches and signatures. If they are using Zero Day attacks [previously unseen, unpatched software exploits], then neither will help you unfortunately. This is also why more and more tooling is not looking at prevention, rather, they are looking at detecting a successful compromise as early as possible. The compromise still occurs however."
The game has officially become how quickly a Chief Technology or Chief Information Officer can detect that his network has been breached.

Companies Can Do Little To Avoid The Next Wave Of Cyber Attacks

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>There's a good chance that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sweet-briar-college-virginia-lawsuit-2015-3">a bombshell lawsuit from a local Virginia county attorney</a> on behalf of the state will be the lifeline the imploding Sweet Briar College needs."I believe that because this lawsuit has been brought by the Commonwealth attorney, Sweet Briar College has a much higher chance of staying open," attorney Gretchen Van Ness told Business Insider."When a Commonwealth attorney appears, he or she has amazing credibility," she added.Van Ness has an interesting perspective on the lawsuit filed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sweet-briar-college-closing-2015-3">to halt the abrupt closure of Sweet Briar</a>, an all-women's college that has struggled with declining enrollment. She was a plaintiff in an eerily similar lawsuit in the 1970s.That 1979 lawsuit was filed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sweet-briar-college-staying-open-wilson-college-lawsuit-2015-3">against a then-100-year-old all-women's college</a> whose board voted for it to close following declining enrollment and a dwindling endowment. However, the school's alumnae and students sued and won after a judge ruled the board hadn't done enough to try to save the school. The school, Wilson College, is still open today.Rather than coming from the state, the lawsuit against Wilson was brought by the "Save Wilson Committee" - a coalition of students, alumnae, and faculty.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>While the SWC was initially skeptical of their chances to actually reverse the college's decision, the lawsuit received support from the Pennsylvania attorney general, which Van Ness credits in part for helping to turn the tide in favor of the plaintiffs. Because the Sweet Briar lawsuit is already coming from the state, she said, it may be starting off on a stronger foot.The lawsuit alleges Sweet Briar's administration did not seriously attempt to keep the college open, either by fundraising, lowering tuition, or targeting wealthy and foreign students.The lawsuit involving Wilson involved similar issues.Van Ness, then 20 years old, was Wilson's student body president and had been in office exactly three weeks when the college announced it was closing. She sees many similarities between Sweet Briar in the 2000s and Wilson in the 1970s - a board that that allegedly used funds raised for the college to shut down school and allegedly failed to change the way it managed its endowment.Van Ness explained that Virginia, as the plaintiff, will face a high burden of proof in court to try and freeze the status quo of the school while the case is being decided on its merits. The plaintiff also faces a further burden to win a preliminary injunction or temporary restraining order, which would prevent Sweet Briar from closing while the case is pending.These are "really high tests" for the plaintiffs to pass, which may be made easier by Bowyer's role as county attorney, Van Ness aid."The burden of proof is still on the Commonwealth - the attorney has made allegations in the complaint that she is confident she can prove," Van Ness said. "But she also has enormous credibility because of her role as a Commonwealth attorney."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Despite the apparent strength of the state's position, the case will likely go to trial rather than settle. Van Ness said that in her opinion, the Sweet Briar Leadership is "absolutely going to defend this.""From everything that I've been reading, they're convinced they've done the right thing and the only possible thing," she explained. "I would fully expect that they were expecting to be sued and have to fight this."Sweet Briar College released the following statement about the lawsuit on Tuesday:Sweet Briar College has the utmost respect for the Office of the County Attorney of Amherst; however, the claims asserted in the County Attorney's Complaint are contrary to well-established Virginia <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> as expressed by both the General Assembly and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
