Alibaba backed Paytm too, silently pulled off its grocery app Paytm Zip from App stores within three months of its launch in 2015. “The reason for shutting down these e groceries is because Indian customers are still more of a Do-it-for-me rather than Do-it-Yourself. The mindset in India to shop for groceries only online will take some time to convert,” said Pratik Jindal, MD, e-retail of <keyword id="3371689" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="SRS-Grocery">SRS Grocery</keyword>, one of the first industry players to embrace the hybrid model. 

	In order to cater to a mixed crowd and demand there is a strong need of both an offline and online presence in this market, he explained.
 

	Besides mindset shift, technical faults in the design itself lead to their downfall.
 

	Localisation factor
 

	With respect to groceries, offline models have always worked because of the localisation factor involved. Consumers went to inventories and supermarket to fetch veggies and fruits.
 

	“The change in mindset is not easy enough. We overwhelmed the customer with too many online strategies just when they started to accept it. Not much time was given to adapt,” said Pratik.
 

	Delivery cost
 

	The delivery cost was always higher in the models designed. 
 

	“Delivery costs for e-grocers vary between 8 to 11 % while the offline margins of retailers are 15% to 20%. Since one cannot do away with retailer margins and delivery cost both pure play online groceries have very less margins and it is hard for them to drive profitability let alone break even. Given the low operating margins and the challenges of offering better deals omni-channels is a safer bet when it comes to sustaining our business in this space” he remarked.
 

	Yes, offline model solely won’t survive the digital wave either, for obvious reasons. 
 

	“Offline and Online channels are two different entities and will continue to co-exist depending on the mood of the customers. Industry players have now started recognizing the potential of the hybrid model as Big Basket is planning to expand its presence offline in order to stay in the competition,” he concluded.

As City Center mall's largest tenant, Target had a say over changes to the property. According to people familiar with the lease discussions, Target balked at sharing the mall with Whole Foods because it feared competition from the grocery chain's new owner, Amazon.Early attempts to persuade Target failed, and Whole Foods may now have to concede certain Amazon initiatives - such as lockers where customers can pick up goods ordered online - if it wants the location, the people said. Talks are ongoing.A Reuters examination of real estate agreements and interviews with 20 retail landlords, lawyers and brokers show that the strings attached to operating in malls like City Center present an emerging and little-scrutinized challenge to Amazon's quest to re-shape Whole Foods.Across the United States, large retailers including Target, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, and Best Buy have legal rights in many lease agreements that allow them to limit what Amazon can do with nearby Whole Foods stores, and where it can open new ones.Documents reviewed by Reuters show bans on Amazon lockers and delivery operations near a Target store in Illinois and also in Florida, where a new Whole Foods is set to open. Lockers for retrieving online orders are a way for Amazon to spur sales through the grocery chain.In Manhattan and other locations, the leases of Whole Foods' big box neighbors bar it from selling a range of goods that Amazon has in its massive online inventory, from electronics to toys to linens.Even Whole Foods stores that do not share space with major rivals can face constraints imposed by local governments. A city council resolution in White Plains, New York, restricted the hours when Whole Foods can use a loading dock prior to the grocer locating in the mall.Amazon declined to answer questions about how these restrictions across the country impact its plans.In a statement, Target said it is "focused on what's best for the company and delivering on the reasons our guests love Target. Our more than 1,800 stores across the country are a strategic asset and a vital part of Target's future."The company did not discuss details of the restrictions reported by Reuters, but said, "It's inaccurate to characterize lease agreements as our corporate strategy."Reuters could not determine the full extent of limits on Whole Foods stores because lease deals vary from mall to mall, and many are not public. While restricting how neighbors operate is a standard practice in retail, Amazon is new to feeling the heat.Some mall owners and real estate brokers say Whole Foods will still find landlords who are eager to have the high-profile tenant driving traffic in their malls, and see rivals trying to keep Whole Foods out as short-sighted.But with nearly all of Whole Foods' 473 stores subject to lease agreements and plans to add up to 85 stores, according to regulatory filings, Amazon has launched into brick-and-mortar with more constraints and entrenched enemies than in the online world it dominates."Many people assume this big, 800-pound gorilla is going to come and beat up all of these retailers," said Terrison Quinn, a senior vice president at brokerage SRS Real Estate Partners. "I just don't think that's going to be the case."<h3>DOZENS OF RESTRICTIONS</h3>Amazon wasted no time in making changes when the $13.7 billion Whole Foods deal closed in August. The world's largest online retailer cut grocery prices, started selling its Echo home speaker in stores and disclosed plans to add lockers to some locations and Whole Foods items to Prime Now, its two-hour delivery program.Analysts expect such moves will boost online orders and revenue for Amazon. But big box rivals have a number of ways to fight back.Retailers routinely negotiate guarantees that their landlords will not alter malls in a way that hurts sales, whether leasing to a strip club or starting construction projects without approval, real estate lawyers said.These leases, which often last 10 to 20 years with options to renew, may even name competitors barred from opening a store.A 16-page memo in July detailing the lease restrictions governing Miami's Pinecrest Place mall, obtained by Reuters, offers a glimpse of the legal protections retailers are securing.Target required an affiliate of national landlord Regency Centers to bar "Any lockers, lock-boxes or other type of storage system that is used to receive or store merchandise from a catalog or online retailer."The document then specifies more than a dozen other restrictions for the mall, from leasing space to a pet shop or toy store to operating "a fulfillment center in connection with receiving, storing or distributing merchandise from a catalog or online retailer."Regency announced in April that Whole Foods will open in the center, meaning the store cannot have Amazon lockers or fulfill orders for Prime Now.A May memo of lease for a Target in Evanston, Illinois, obtained by Reuters, contains similar prohibitions against lockers and online fulfillment.In another case, Target raised similar concerns about Amazon for a prospective Whole Foods location at the Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco, people familiar with the matter said.A Reuters analysis showed that 7 percent of existing Whole Foods' U.S. stores are within a quarter mile, or roughly five-minute walk, of a Target. <div class="margin-top"> <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-can-overwhelm-competition-with-brute-force-2017-10">Amazon can 'overwhelm the competition with brute force'</a></h3> <div> </div> </div>

I was told she was adhering to the state's mandates and began social distancing. Outside the office, it was a ghost town.The streets that are normally filled with halal trucks and people selling knockoff purses were nearly empty. And then there was me: a guy who left his house and essentially risked coming in contact with coronavirus for no reason.This was one of the last letters I need for Medicaid to begin approving my gender-affirming procedure - more simply known as bottom surgery. Without these letters, my health insurance will not deem the surgery "medically necessary." And as a result, I will not be able to afford it. This comes just a week after the US Surgeon General <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-pandemic-hospitals-postpone-elective-procedures-2020-3">requested that health systems consider pausing elective surgeries</a>. Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-hospitals-broke-without-federal-help-de-blasio-2020-3">ordered that medical centers pause elective surgeries</a>. What's more, a staff member at the health center warned me that because of the outbreak my surgery could be postponed.I am not alone: Transgender and nonbinary people face many barriers when it comes to finding access to gender-affirming healthcare. In 2015, the <a href="https://www.transequality.org/sites/default/files/docs/usts/USTS%20Full%20Report%20-%20FINAL%201.6.17.pdf">US Transgender Survey</a> found that one-third of trans and nonbinary people face discrimination at the doctor's office. <a href="https://www.transequality.org/sites/default/files/docs/usts/USTS%20Full%20Report%20-%20FINAL%201.6.17.pdf">Their findings also show</a> that 33% of trans people postponed medical care because of the cost. On the other hand, research shows gender confirmation surgeries<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/sex-reassignment-surgery-yields-long-term-mental-health-benefits-study-n1079911"> improve the overall mental health</a> and wellbeing of trans and nonbinary people.For many people, when they hear "elective surgery" they assume cosmetic surgeries. I've waited nearly a year for SRS and now the growing coronavirus pandemic is threatening to take it away.<h2>Trans and nonbinary people face barriers in healthcare</h2>I am scheduled to have bottom surgery or metoidioplasty in July 2020, but because of the delay in elective procedures, it's likely that my pre-op appointment and surgery will be rescheduled. Before then I've had to go through a number of psychological evaluations to be deemed "sane" for the procedure.<a href="https://www.wpath.org/media/cms/Documents/SOC%20v7/Standards%20of%20Care_V7%20Full%20Book_English.pdf">According to national trans health guidelines</a> from <a href="https://www.wpath.org/">WPATH</a> (The World Professional Association of Transgender Health), trans and nonbinary patients who want bottom surgery must have gender dysphoria, have their mental illnesses under control, receive hormone replacement therapy for a year, and live consistently as their gender (whether male, female, or nonbinary). Also, you need letters from a doctor, psychiatrist, and counselor that prove this procedure is medically necessary.Not only do we face strict requirements for treatment, but this system is backlogged with patients. Last September, I called Mount Sinai's Transgender Health Clinic, was put on a waitlist, and then scheduled for my first appointment in November.At the appointment, I didn't make the weight requirement. All transgender and nonbinary patients are required to have a BMI of 33. At the time, my BMI was closer to 34. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmi-is-bogus-best-way-to-tell-if-youre-a-healthy-weight-2016-9">Business Insider has previously reported</a> that BMI is an outdated system that doesn't measure body fat. According to health experts, physicians can yield a more accurate result of your health by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmi-is-bogus-best-way-to-tell-if-youre-a-healthy-weight-2016-9">measuring your waist circumference</a>. Yet, the facility did not allow me to schedule surgery until I lost the weight. I lost 10 pounds through a crash diet. Hours before I graduated from the Craig Newmark School of Journalism, I weighed in at Mount Sinai's Transgender Health Clinic. Then, I had my first consultation with the doctor in January.I also faced bias from mental health counselors who could write a letter. The first therapist I went to for a letter for bottom surgery told me she didn't feel comfortable advocating for me to get surgery. So, I had to look elsewhere. And my former psychiatrist who is covered under Medicaid calls me "Mrs." at every appointment, despite knowing I am male. Therefore, receiving a letter from him was not an option. Now, social distancing has delayed me even further. To this day, I have not received a letter. <h2>The surgery isn't elective - it's lifesaving</h2>In August of 2018, a doctor officially diagnosed me with gender dysphoria, the debilitating distress I feel because of a disconnect between my brain and how the world perceives my body. Since then, I've received treatment through hormone replacement therapy or injecting my stomach every week with testosterone. This has relieved a lot of my symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Much of my dysphoria comes from not feeling socially included in male spaces. On a day-to-day basis, this means finding another bathroom at work because there are no open stalls. At a former internship and graduate school, this meant people intentionally calling me by my dead pronouns and grouping me in with "women" or "ladies." It's only recently that I've started to be read as male in public (for example, grocery store cashiers calling me sir, people on the street calling me brother and guy). While this is a relief, it's also scary. I avoid public gyms because I fear the potential violence and stigma I'll face in the men's locker. Receiving this surgery as soon as possible will allow me to avoid potential violence and live my life safely. Now, I am waiting for a call from my surgeon's office on whether or not my surgery and pre-op appointment will be rescheduled or canceled. Bottom surgery is one of the final steps I'm taking in my gender transition. Most of my legal documents are male. My mail is addressed to "Mr. Tatyana Bellamy-Walker" and I have an "M" on my driver's license, social security records, and birth certificate.And<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-a-breakdown-of-trump-administrations-transgender-military-ban-2019-1"> although transgender people are banned from the US military,</a> I managed to be registered into the US Selective Service System, a military draft system for all males under the age of 26.Yet, somehow, the pandemic is becoming my latest obstacle to participating in public life.
