India will need 2.7 million digitally-skilled people by 2023 across sectors, not just in IT

A National Research Foundation (NRF) will be set up for invigorating innovation and research under recently released Nation Education Policy (NEP)," he said. The minister said this year, the category of women only higher educational institutions was introduced to encourage women and bringing gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship. Releasing the ranking, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said, "Innovation has always been key defining feature of human progress. We must regain that intellectual leadership, we must again emerge as a global hub of learning and innovation." They need encouragement, facilitation and recognition, they must be given needed guidance and freedom to explore new frontiers," Naidu added.

Though, no Indian institute has yet broken into the top 200, IISc holds a rank in the 201-250 band. The last time around it was in the band of 251-300. 	 "India has four new entries in the top 800, the country's strong performance is partly thanks to the country recognizing the importance of participating in global benchmarking exercises; just last month the government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> to the top of world university rankings, " said Phil Baty, editor of <keyword id="1161482" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Higher-Education-World-University-Rankings">Times Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> in a statement. 
	 "The government's focus on improving India's standing in global rankings - and even the introduction of the India-specific rankings - has started to yield results. Going forward, there needs to be discussions between ministries to facilitate free flow of students and faculty “Rohin <keyword id="53" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kapoor">Kapoor</keyword>, director at <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> in India, told ET.”Once internationalization and globalization happens, India's rankings will improve significantly. This is one of the critical areas where India is lagging behind," Kapoor further added. 
	 This year Times <keyword id="3676089" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-world-university-rankings">Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> expanded their rankings to 980 as compared to 800 last year. Institutes ranked in the 801+ bandare Acharya Nagarjuna University, Amity University, Amrita University, <keyword id="6386394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-University">Andhra University</keyword>, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University, Osmania University, SASTRA University, Sathyabama University, SRM University and Vellore Institute of Technology. 
	 
	 Amrita University and Andhra University slipped down to the 801+ group. However, on the brighter side NIT Rourkela, Sri Venkateswara University, TIFR and Tezpur University made their way in the top 800 list. 
	 “This year's expanded list is a testimony to how competitive global <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> has become. The 980 universities come from 79 different countries,” <keyword id="3660284" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="batty">Batty</keyword> told ET. 
	 US for the first time in 12 years lost the first rank in the list with <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> becoming the world's top university. Others in the top five include California Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

There’s been an on-and-off debate around employability of Indian engineering graduates, with a recent report suggesting that as much as 95% of Indian engineering graduates are unfit for programming jobs. As per IIT directors that ET spoke to, the concern arises because of the large number of engineering students that graduate from Indian colleges every year, outdated curriculum that they are made to study, as well as poor teaching infrastructure and shortage of good faculty in institutes that are not premium or much reputed. "The country is producing as many as 10 lakh engineers a year. There needs to be a serious review," said Indranil Manna, director at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/companies/iit-kanpur-joins-hands-with-paytm-to-become-a-completely-cashless-campus/articleshow/57572069.cms">IIT-Kanpur</a>. "Do we really need so many engineers? Are there that many jobs?" However, several institutes lack good teachers, good labs and infrastructure. For this, the system needs to be blamed, which allows so many institutes of questionable quality to blossom. V Ramgopal Rao, director of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/tech/ericsson-has-set-up-a-5g-for-india-program-in-iit-delhi-heres-why-/articleshow/58402112.cms">IIT Delhi</a>, shares Manna’s view, agreeing that India is seeing an overproduction of engineers, but an overwhelming majority of them can’t be called unemployable. Not to be so narrowly focused that they can only do one kind of job. We must strengthen our ITI and polytechnic diploma education by incorporating a significant hands-on training component," Rao suggested. One can also think of Indian parents’ fascination to see their kids becoming engineers as the reason behind the overproduction of engineers. While some high-performers from top IITs get high packages, the same is not the case with most fresh graduates from institutes not counted as premium. This also forces many fresh engineers to take up jobs unrelated to engineering. "There is no doubt that this (debate over employability) is not applicable to IITs, NITs, some notable CFTIs such as the IIITs, IIEST, IIST, etc. Some leading state universities including <keyword id="6361218" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jadavpur-University">Jadavpur University</keyword> and Anna University colleges are imparting very high-quality education as are private institutes such as BITS, VIT, Amity and SRM, among others," said Gautam Biswas, director at <keyword id="6399339" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Guwahati">IIT-Guwahati</keyword>. He added that there are concerns about some colleges that are not able to raise their qualities and standards. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/careers/iit-bombay-students-channel-educating-rural-youth-in-local-languages-becomes-a-huge-hit-on-youtube/articleshow/57495768.cms">IIT-Bombay</a> director Devang Khakhar said that no student is ready to immediately join the industry right from the campus. They need to be trained before they can be sent to work. On the surveys claiming 95% of <keyword id="729521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Engineers">Indian engineers</keyword> unfit for jobs, he said, "if the situation was that dire, so many IT companies wouldn't be recruiting in such large numbers."

Employability of engineers exaggerated, but still a concern, says IIT directors

Chennai, <keyword id="116095" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> Chairman K Sivan on Saturday said the space agency was developing '<keyword id="9090354" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-propulsion">green propulsion</keyword>' for its <keyword id="10498627" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambitious-human-space-flight-mission">ambitious human space flight mission</keyword>, 'Gaganyaan'. He also said it may be adopted for use in every stage of a rocket. He was speaking at the 16th convocation of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, near here. Sivan, also the Secretary, <keyword id="245720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Space">Department of Space</keyword>, advised the new graduates to take up 'calculated risk' in their life as it may safeguard them from 'absolute failure'. "As India continues to focus on economic growth, it needs to ensure that environmental damage is limited by adopting green technologies. ISRO has made space grade lithium-ion batteries and this technology is useful for mass adoption of electric vehicle", he noted. On the green propellant, Sivan said, "Even in the rocket propulsion, ISRO is developing green propulsion for its human space flight mission. In future, all the propulsion stages may adopt green propulsion," he said. According to ISRO, <keyword id="622933" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Polar-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">polar satellite launch vehicle</keyword> (PSLV) a trusted workhorse of the space scientists -- is a four stage rocket filled with fuel which pushes the rocket to ensure that the satellite it carries is placed in the intended orbit. GSLV or a geo-stationery launch vehicle (GSLV) is a three stage rocket with a cryogenic upper stage. The Bengaluru-headquartered space agency had planned to launch its maiden human space flight mission 'Gaganyaan' by December 2021. But early this month, ISRO indicated that it is likely to be delayed by one year due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing students through virtual platform, the ISRO chief encouraged them to take up calculated risk as it would safeguard them from 'absolute failure.' "You may fail, but each failure would provide a valuable lesson. I can say with great confidence that India's space programme has been built on spectacular failures and each failure has resulted in improvements in our system", he said. Asking the students to innovate, Sivan said, innovation was not just having great idea on paper. "Innovation comes with a high risk of failure. You may be called crazy. Initial outcome of innovation may be imperfect. You must realize that you are not failing means you are not trying anything hard", he said. Referring to the space sector reforms announced by the Centre in June, he said, "the government has already announced space sector reforms for greater participation of non- governmental entities in space activity". "Our next PSLV (polar satellite launch vehicle) launch will have satellite from start-up agencies which will be the first product of this reform." he said. On the SRM Satellite 'SRMSAT' launched by ISRO in 2011, he said it was in 'healthy condition' and urged the university to come forward and make use of the space sector reform as announced by <keyword id="1576501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Government-of-India">the government of India</keyword>. "ISRO is very much open to you all. I request SRM to come forward with their innovative idea of making space activities as required by the Government of India. I am sure that SRM will do this work", he said. The Digital India initiative by the Centre was a key area to leverage and ISRO has already initiated reforms to make digital assets available easily to industry as well as for startups for making innovative applications in navigation, earth observation as well as disaster management, he said. ISRO developing green propulsion for human space mission 'Gaganyaan', says Chairman K Sivan

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) To help develop the next generation of Cloud professionals, seven higher education institutions in India will adopt Cloud computing curricula from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Educate global initiative into their mainstream college syllabus, the Cloud arm of ecommerce giant Amazon said on Friday. The Cloud computing content will be offered as part of undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma programmes starting in September this year. Cloud computing is a top workforce skill sought by companies, as reported by a LinkedIn study conducted annually over the last five years. This new effort is aimed at providing students with knowledge and competency-based credentials in skills such as Cloud architecture, data analytics, cybersecurity, Machine Learning, and software development. "Building a cloud-ready workforce is key to enabling technology-led growth in India that will drive innovation at speed and create impact at scale," Rahul Sharma, President, India and South Asia Public Sector, Amazon Internet Services Private Limited, said in a statement. "Integrating cloud curricula as part of mainstream college education represents a shift in the way the industry and academia can come together to build the next-generation of highly-skilled Cloud professionals." The education institutions offering the newly-designed Bachelor of Technology degree programs in Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science are -- Chitkara University, Punjab; Galgotias University, Uttar Pradesh; Manav Rachna University, Delhi and NCR; Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology, Uttar Pradesh; Sharda University, Delhi and NCR; and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu. The ASM Institute of Management and Computer Studies in Maharashtra will offer syllabus combined with the AWS Educate Cloud curricula for its Post Graduate Diploma in Management -- Emerging Technology. All students participating in the degree and diploma programmes will be enrolled in AWS Educate, Amazon's global initiative to provide students comprehensive resources for building skills in the Cloud, and provided with AWS Promotional Credits to gain real-world, hands-on experience using AWS Cloud technology. Supporting this effort is IT industry body Nasscom which will facilitate greater industry participation by engaging key employers in information technology (IT) and information technology enabled services (ITES) segments in India, to build a talent pipeline equipped with cloud skills.
