Australia emerges as the hottest employment destination for Indian graduates seeking overseas jobs

Many top universities have turned flexible with student intake, and lowered criteria to increase the number of falling foreign students. “A lot of top schools have lowered the eligibility criteria slightly. They are giving GMAT, GRE waivers in terms of scores, extending deadlines etc. And this has never happened before in the last 20-25 years,” Akshay Chaturvedi, founder and CEO of online higher education platform Leverage Edu told Business Insider in an interview. ‘Nearly 50% of the students look to defer foreign university admission’ This year, half of applicants received a seat and most of them had even paid admission fees, according to a recent survey by Shiksha. But now these students are having second thoughts. They are concerned about health and other restrictions and choosing to delay plans to travel abroad for education, due to the Coronavirus scare. Nearly 50% of the students are considering the possibility of deferring to the future. Ravneet Pawha, deputy VP at Deakin University Australia believes that while the students are considering deferring their international study plans, the sentiment is ‘okay’. “Around the world, this is the time that students are finalising their destination, applying to universities. But this whole lockdown situation has changed the mindset of parents and students to think of international education. Having said that, students are wanting to defer but not cancel plans,” she said. The Great Lockdown effect The delay in admissions and classes at the university level is not encouraging either. While many universities have shifted to <keyword id="977497" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-classes">online classes</keyword> for even full-time courses for the current semester, students are preferring to defer to next year to enroll in the January 2021 batch because they are still unsure of the online model. “There will be a downturn in international students this year. Universities have already delayed the start of the September cohort. At this juncture, nobody would want to go,” Nitish Jain, President at SP Jain School of Global Management told Business Insider. To attract international students, higher education platforms and universities are now teaming up to conduct webinars, virtual university tours — allowing students to meet the school representatives for one-on-one conversations. “We are getting universities to do webinars every single day and we are directly connecting the applicants to the universities. Universities are also playing on frontfoot. They are ensuring students that, if for the worse the situation does not get better anytime soon, the classes would be conducted online throughout,” Akshay said. Universities extend provisional offers - before entrance exams For those applying to undergraduate colleges, the hurdle has come from exams itself, which have been delayed. And, final year students are awaiting their results. Students are not preparing for any exam that cannot be given online, and they are definitely not sitting for the international entrances like GMAT, GRE or TOEFL. In fact, many test centers across the globe have also closed down in the wake of Coronavirus. These test scores are necessary for graduate school admissions. Universities are now going the extra mile to woo students back. Pawha says that most universities are giving provisional offers, allowing the students to enroll fully once the entrances and other exam results are out. “You can start studying online, paying for one or two subjects for now and by August end, you can submit their final results,” she added. For instance, INSEAD recently became the first B-school that allowed aspiring MBAs to apply without test results. The Indian government’s historic changes to the National Education Policy, which has many welcome steps for students in the country, also allowed foreign universities to set up campuses in India. With this, India has opened the doors for the world’s top 100 universities to operate in the country. “A legislative framework facilitating such entry (of foreign universities) will be put in place, and such universities will be given special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India,” says the policy. The latest policy will also facilitate Indian colleges to set up campuses abroad and has also encouraged student exchange programs between Indian and established institutions abroad. “"Research/teaching collaborations and faculty/student exchanges with high-quality foreign institutions will be facilitated, and relevant mutually-beneficial MOUs with foreign countries will be signed,” said the policy. The move from the government has been appreciated by many as it will boost India’s image as the centre of education. “Allowing Indian universities to set up offshore campuses as well as facilitating foreign universities to operate in India, will not only increase the quality of education, but also strengthen India’s position on the map as a global education destination,” said Nitish Jain, President, SP Jain School of Global Management. India’s new education policy to bring top global universities closer home for students

A Polish student pursuing his masters degree at Jadavpur University (JU) here has been asked to leave India by the <keyword id="65242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-home-ministry">Union Home Ministry</keyword>, purportedly over his presence in a rally opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, a teacher said on Sunday. Kamil Siedcynski, now in the final semester of the comparative literature course, was slapped a notice by the local Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) - an arm of the Home Ministry - about a week ago, Partha Pratim Roy, General Secretary of the <keyword id="1951941" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jadavpur-University-Teachers-Association">Jadavpur University Teachers Association</keyword>, told IANS. The FRRO ordered him to leave India within 15 days of receiving the notice for his involvement in "anti-government activities", saying it amounted to a "visa violation". The notice did not, however, give any details of the "anti-government activities" he has participated in, but warned that he would be prosecuted under the <keyword id="6366165" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreigners">Foreigners</keyword> Act, 1946, if the deadline was not adhered to. Roy said Siedcynski had been present during a rally organised in the Ramlila Maidan in the city by intellectuals, artists and students against CAA on December 19. "Kamil appealed to the FRRO to reconsider its decision, saying he had gone to the rally out of curiousity and also to click images. But the officials here said they were helpless and the decision has been taken in Delhi," Roy told IANS. Siedcynski is likely to move the court on Monday against the order. He earlier studied Bengali literature at Visva Bharati, a Central university, and can write and speak in the language fluently. He has also translated a Polish fairy tale into Bengali. "He comes from a poor financial background. So the university has waived his fees. He is a very serious student and not associated with any student organisation," said Roy. Siedcynski was not available for comments. The FRRO earlier issued a similar order against <keyword id="8854172" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="afsara-anika">Afsara Anika</keyword> Meem, a first year Bangladeshi undergraduate student at the Visva Bharati University's Fine Arts department. Meem had posted on social media photos of an anti-CAA agitation. Last December, two other foreign nationals - Jakob Lindenthal, a post graduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and Norwegian woman Janne Mette-Johannson received similar orders for taking part in protests against the law. The CAA, passed by parliament in December, seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists who fled religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh till December 31, 2014.

Here are the highlights of the ‘simplified’ visa rules: <ul><li>The Student Route and Child Student Route — for students aged 4-17 who want to study at an independent school in the UK — will open on 5 October for international students. </li><li>Students will require a total of 70 points to be successful. Points are non-tradeable and will be awarded for meeting the requirements set out here.</li><li>Students who were issued an offer for study under the Tier 4 system and make an application before 5 October will be considered against the current rules for that route. </li><li>Those applying from 5 October will be considered against the new, simplified rules.</li><li>Students will require an appropriate level of English to engage with their course, as they do under the current Tier 4 system. The level of English required will remain the same.</li><li>Students will also now be able to make a visa application up to 6 months before their course starts (up from 3 months under Tier 4), and they will not be required to resubmit proof of academic qualifications with their visa application.</li><li>There will continue to be no limit on the number of international students who can come to the UK.</li><li>The Graduate Route for international students will open in summer 2021. This will allow eligible international students – including those from India – who have completed undergraduate and master’s degrees to stay for two years and those who have completed a PhD to stay for three years to work or look for work.</li></ul>“India accounts for one of the UK’s largest groups of international students and our world-leading education system has always been a key part of our bilateral relationship. Last financial year, nearly 50,000 Indian nationals were granted a study visa – they are the ambassadors of the Living Bridge that connects our countries, ”Jan Thompson, Acting High Commissioner to India, said. “The new student route also simplifies the application process for international students who will be applying to study in the UK. It will be bonus points for them if they can show as a proof that they have an offer letter from an accepted educational institution, know how to speak English, and are going to be self-dependent during their UK studies and this may be the reason why more and more Indian students will choose the UK for postgraduate programs in the near future,” Geeta Jain, Founder of Mediconation told Business Insider. He introduced Ascent Foundation seven years ago to promote entrepreneurs and help women entrepreneurs wade through the challenges of businesses, and grow. After all, he nurtured popular brands like Saffola and Revival. However, Mariwala had to rework his cause soon after as there just weren’t enough women entrepreneurs to work with. He turned his not-for-profit venture into a grooming ground for all entrepreneurs-- not just women. "I wanted to impact entrepreneurs in larger numbers. I started this to promote entrepreneurs. But there weren’t many women entrepreneurs,” Mariawala told Business Insider. Today, seven years later, the foundation has 500 entrepreneurs taking part in the peer group discussions but less than 50 of them are women. "Women's take on anything additional to office is very different and they consider it a tradeoff with their time with family" Archanna Das, Head ASCENT Foundation. Ascent is a peer-to-peer network that helps women entrepreneurs troubleshoot their problems through events and workshops. It periodically organises exciting, highly content-driven events like the flagship annual Conclave, Mixers, Workshops, Huddles, etc. They charge an annual fee of ₹10,000 from all the members to attend these events. “SMEs have a learning curve and we offer is a peer learning platform. We are playing a catalytic role,” Mariwala said. Right now, they have people with an annual turnover of up to ₹2,000 crore who are taking part in these peer groups. And only 10% of them are women. Mariwala still wants to help those who need help the most. He understood the issue and roped in Archanna Das (who is brand and communication management professional), and Shivani Divecha (who had curated events at TedxGate) for course correction. The team brought in stricter eligibility criteria and introduced the concept of initiator — a person who would initiate the talk for the first four months. The entrepreneurs — who want to become a member are required to have a turnover of ₹5 crore for product business or ₹1 crore for service business. They get access to the annual Ascent Conclave and other smaller events that happen from time to time. They also get access to a list of 30 mentors across industries who can guide them in dealing with their challenges including ex CEOs of prominent companies Ascent Foundation has also partnered with Stanford University and SP Jain to give their members access to certain courses on entrepreneurship. About 45 million Americans hold student loan debt with a total national outstanding amount over <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/SLOAS">$1.7 trillion</a>. Borrowers with outstanding education debt typically hold between $20,000 and $24,999, according to the <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/2020-economic-well-being-of-us-households-in-2019-student-loans-other-education-debt.htm">Federal Reserve's 2020 US households report</a> using 2019 data.To determine the economic impact of student-loan debt cancellation, Insider spoke with six experts and economists, parsed through non-profit and government studies and reports, and dove into the data of national student debt.<h2>Just $10,000 in forgiveness could wipe out debt for millions</h2>Eliminating $10,000 of debt would help 15.3 million borrowers completely wipe out their outstanding federal student debt. The <a href="https://studentaid.gov/data-center/student/portfolio">US Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid</a> has outstanding debt figures for federal debt borrowers, those who took out Direct Loans, Federal Family Education Loans, and Perkins Loans.Based on <a href="https://studentaid.gov/data-center/student/portfolio">fourth quarter 2020 data</a>, loan forgiveness of $10,000 would mean complete debt cancellation for 33.6% of borrowers, who have an outstanding debt of less than $10,000 in federal student loans. It would also benefit the 9.6 million who owe between $20,000 to $40,000, the debt group with the largest number of borrowers.However, researchers from the <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/education-postsecondary/reports/2019/06/12/470893/addressing-1-5-trillion-federal-student-loan-debt/">Center for American Progress</a> noted in their own analysis of how many borrowers would have their debt completely eliminated using last year's figures that these shares may actually be lower "because some individuals who currently appear to have low debt levels are in school and are thus likely to end up with higher loan balances as they continue their studies." <h2>Student-debt cancellation could boost the economy</h2>Bharat Ramamurti, a member of the Congressional Oversight Commission, recently <a href="https://twitter.com/BharatRamamurti/status/1328386696296222720">tweeted out a thread </a>that argues the benefits of cancelling student loan debt for these millions of borrowers based on previous studies and government data."The bottom line is that broad debt cancellation via executive order is popular, economically potent, and - most importantly - life-changing for millions of Americans struggling through this crisis," Ramamurti wrote on <a href="https://twitter.com/BharatRamamurti/status/1328386696296222720">Twitter</a>.One of the studies Ramamurti shared is a 2018 paper from the<a href="http://www.levyinstitute.org/pubs/rpr_2_6.pdf"> Levy Economic Institute of Bard College</a> using 2016 data that looks at the effects of student loan debt forgiveness. The authors write that a one-time cancellation of the $1.4 trillion outstanding student debt held would translate to an increase of $86 billion to $108 billion a year, on average, to GDP. Cancelling student debt could also mean current monthly payments could go toward savings or other spending. Per the <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/2020-economic-well-being-of-us-households-in-2019-student-loans-other-education-debt.htm">Federal Reserve report</a>, those who make payments usually pay about $200 to $299 per month. Ramamurti tweeted that this "is like sending those people a check every month." <div type="image" title="college graduates rutgers" height="2938" width="3917" msid="79583727" hostid="261"></div>He told Insider that with student loan forgiveness, that is essentially putting almost $3,000 back in Americans' pockets each year, which as a result could help boost the economy. Indeed, forgiveness would benefit younger Americans who have been putting off milestones. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-delaying-homeownership-student-loan-debt-2019-9">SoFi survey</a> of 1,000 Americans ages 22 to 35 found 61% of millennials said they've delayed buying a house because of student-loan debt.The Levy Institute also noted that beyond the effects seen in their models, forgiveness would help with both business and household formation. "Of course, starting a small business means that there's going to be more jobs available. Buying a home means there's more demand for home construction and so on," Ramamurti said. "And so it has all of these positive ripple effects throughout the economy." <h2>Affluent households won't be the only ones who benefit</h2>One of the biggest arguments against forgiveness is that it would mainly help higher-income households since they typically have more student loan debt. Lowell Ricketts, lead analyst for the Center for Household Financial Stability at the St. Louis Fed, agreed that affluent graduates would disproportionately benefit from student loan forgiveness. "Most borrowers typically have low balances under $10,000 or $20,000," he told Insider in a November 23 interview. "Most of the total balance outstanding is held by high-balance borrowers."This cohort, who are typically in high-earning professions, hold two-thirds of all student debt, Ricketts said. For example, he added, students who owe over $100,000 make up just 7% of student loan borrowers but own 37% of all student debt out there.But that's not to say low-balance borrowers wouldn't benefit, Ricketts said. Forgiving $10,000 worth of student loans would resolve the serious delinquency that 19% of this cohort has, he said. It would even "carve out an income-based repayment plan or a payment plan that is more workable" for borrowers with $20,000 in debt, he said.<div type="image" title="college grad graduation happy" height="2240" width="2987" msid="79583729" hostid="261"></div>Based on 2016 Consumer of Survey Finances data, Matthew Chingos, vice president for education, data, and policy at the Urban Institute, <a href="https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/what-does-covid-19-fiscal-relief-package-mean-student-loan-borrowers">wrote</a> "the benefits to lower-income households would come almost entirely in the $10,000 reduction in their loan principal, which will reduce their future loan burden but have a much smaller effect on their monthly cash flows. This is because they are less likely to be making payments on their loans, and payments made tend to be smaller."But debt cancellation for low-income borrowers as a share of their income is much higher than for wealthier individuals, Laura Beamer, lead researcher at the Jain Family Institute (JFI), told Insider.Beamer has spent the past year studying inequality in student access to higher education in the US for JFI's <a href="https://www.jainfamilyinstitute.org/projects/millennial-student-debt/">Millennial Student Debt Project</a>. Her research found that in 2009, the lowest income zip codes across the country saw their student debt burdens go to 56% of their income; by 2018, it had risen to 94%. "People who are low-income are going to be benefiting the most, even just looking at their debt-to-income ratios before and after debt cancellation," she said. "Those getting $10,000 in student loan relief, the impact for households as a portion of their income that would be freed up is dramatically greater for lower income households."<h2>Forgiveness would help narrow the racial wealth gap</h2>It's these lowest-income households, and communities of color, that will gain the most from cancellation plans. Beamer said: "Progress on mitigating wealth inequality is one of the biggest effects of student debt forgiveness."Black students shoulder a heavier debt burden than their white peers: About <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-americas-student-debt-crisis-impacts-black-students-2019-7#1-866-of-black-students-borrow-federal-loans-to-attend-four-year-colleges-compared-to-599-of-white-students-1">87% of Black students attending four-year colleges</a> take out student loans compared to about 60% of white students. They also owe $7,400 more on average than their white peers after graduating, per <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-americas-student-debt-crisis-impacts-black-students-2019-7#3-an-average-black-graduate-has-7400-more-in-student-debt-than-his-or-her-white-peer-3">Brookings</a>. Post-college, it's difficult for workers of color to financially catch up. As the <a href="https://www.epi.org/publication/swa-wages-2019/">Economic Policy Institute</a> wrote in its latest wages report, "average wages grew faster among white and Hispanic workers than among [Black] workers for all education groups from 2000 to 2019."Black borrowers under the age of 40 were also more likely to be behind on payments in 2019 than white or Hispanic borrowers: 26% for Black borrowers, 19% for Hispanic borrowers, and 7% for white borrowers, according to the <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/2020-economic-well-being-of-us-households-in-2019-student-loans-other-education-debt.htm">Federal Reserve</a>.<div type="image" title="college student" height="1143" width="1524" msid="79583732" hostid="261"></div>A paper by <a href="https://rooseveltinstitute.org/publications/student-debt-forgiveness-options-implications-for-policy-and-racial-equity/">The Roosevelt Institute</a> using data from the Fed's Survey of Consumer Finances looked at what different levels of forgiveness would mean for debt relief for white and black borrowers.The researchers found that if anything, $10,000 is not enough, according to Suzanne Kahn, the director of education, jobs, and worker power and the Great Democracy Initiative at Roosevelt Institute, told Insider that the think tank.While Kahn said the think tank doesn't have a certain amount they suggest for debt forgiveness, an updated <a href="https://rooseveltinstitute.org/2020/10/29/student-debt-is-a-racial-equity-issue-heres-how-mass-debt-relief-can-address-it/">paper</a> based on the latest data suggests that forgiveness of $75,000, "would be a more appropriate level to increase household wealth, help close the racial wealth gap, and boost our struggling economy." It all ties back to Ramamurti's argument that forgiveness wouldn't just benefit the individual borrower, but the economy as a whole. A threshold could pull lower-end borrowers out of default and restore their credit scores and even help those not in default delaying the aforementioned life milestones.Consider Layla, who said she's had to weigh life decisions like buying a home, having a kid, and accepting a job against her debt. "Before any major or minor decision is made, I have to consider my student loans," she said.She said debt relief would open the door for countless opportunities and the hope that she could still create a viable future for herself and her family. "I would feel like I could breathe a little easier. Almost as if I had a second chance at my financial life to do things better."

The 10 Best Business Schools in India

The launch of <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">amazon</keyword> go, has brought the conversation back to <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword>. For the last one month, India has been talking about de-monetisation; which in itself is a fillip to digital buying. But when global technological breakthroughs like amazon go, change the paradigm, and challenges a whole industry- how do local players cope? 
 Theres no denying that Amazon and <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> are global commerce brands. Theres also no denying that they have major advantages, when they enter new markets; especially as they have operated successfully in various geographies have some unique advantages while entering into new local markets. 
 And free markets are good news. Most developing counties are now easing the Foreign Direct <keyword id="6355120" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investment">Investment</keyword> routes and with the western markets maturing, <keyword id="2801312" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="global-e-commerce">global e-commerce</keyword> firms are constantly looking more attractive markets elsewhere. Euromonitor estimates that Global e-commerce sales went up from US$ 994 Billion in 2015 to US$ 1155 Billion in 2016 and is expected to touch US$ 1506 by year 2018. 
 
As more and more e-commerce firms get the global tag, lets look at factors that give global commerce firms an added edge. 
 
1. Proven customer value preposition: Global e-commerce companies know how to capitalize on their distinct customer value preposition well. This also helps in fast and effective positioning of the company as the new customers would know what to expect. If handled suitably this can be a great advantage as the company need not invest more resources in customer education and can benefit immensely from the existing awareness and image even while entering in the new local markets. 
 
2. Time-Tested portal and logistics operations: The success of an e-commerce enterprise depends on how well the company handles and integrate the web portal operations with fulfilment and logistics. Global companies have tried and tested approaches that help them to scale up operations effectively. Their pre-existing Information systems and business process alignment is a major strength. They can replicate their best suited practices in the new local markets while a new local player has to go through this critical cycle of learning which can put the local player in a stark disadvantage. In the context of global e-commerce, perfection in the alignment of IT and business process is indeed the ‘silver bullet’. 
 
3. Knowledge and know-how: Global e-commerce companies also come with a vast knowledge and experience of previously entered markets. This provides valuable customer insights and companies develop their intellectual property which helps them in serving newer markets swiftly as compared to new local players. 
 
4. Minimal Investment in additional e-commerce infrastructure: Technically it is possible for global e-Commerce companies to roll out their new country specific e-commerce portals on the fly. As they have already dedicated e-commerce infrastructure for their existing operations across geographies, it is not difficult to set-up fully functional country specific web portals. Of course this has to be adequately supported by local business operations as is needs the actual ‘boots on the ground’. However, the IT investments needed for an incremental portion of shared infrastructure is minimal. On the same note, IT security, payment and transaction handling capabilities also need not be reinvented for a new market entry. 
 
5. Diverse international talent pool: Global e-commerce companies also generally have diverse talent pool to handle intricacies of new regional and cultural setup while entering into local markets. Regional and cultural sensitization is extremely important to align well with new local markets. 
 
6. Appetite for acquisitions: Sometimes global firms venture into major acquisitions to support their local market entry; and they know what to look for. They have their global operations to fund or support such strategies. Successful local or small firms often are seen as acquisition targets by such global e-commerce companies. 
 
7. Penchant for diversification and evolving new marketspaces: To support local operations the global players often take a mentor approach; they tend to create new marketspaces to facilitate e-commerce between new stakeholder communities like Business-to-Business, Consumer-to-Consumer, reverse auctions etc. E-Bay is a classic example where they have ventured in to new countries aggressive acquisition during the last decade. 
 
However, it is important to note that there are some exceptions, some peculiar geographies (such as China, Russia etc) where some of the above cited advantages may not be obtained fully. Such countries are peculiar because of various reasons, most notably because of their regulatory restrictions or limited ease of doing business. Multinational e-commerce players successful elsewhere may not get an easy foothold in such countries because of either the governmental control over markets or lack of transparency over economic and market policies. 
 
So if an amazon or flipkart or snapped want to enter these countries, from a cultural, social and language perspective,regulatory perspective; such markets are inherently difficult to enter. Amazon’s typical path to success – buying market share – has been repeatedly blocked since it entered China in 2004. Analysts peg Amazon's share of the Chinese online retail market at less than 1.5 percent. The situation became so bad, that Amazon had to open a store on rival Alibaba’s Tmall platform, where it pays fees to the Chinese e-commerce giant! 
 
Largely, in open economies, advantages such as agility and relatively smaller size that local players have, are edged out by the massive scale of global e-commerce companies. In a nutshell, its all about the batting turf.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Google Finance</div></div></div>Stocks rallied on Monday as markets began to dial down their fears over the coming "Brexit" referendum, or vote for the UK to either remain or leave the European Union, set for Thursday.Equity markets, however, lost considerable momentum in the final half hour of the trading day. <h2>Scoreboard</h2><ul><li>Dow: 17,814, +139, (+0.8%)</li><li>S&amp;P 500: 2,083, +12, (+0.6%)</li><li>Nasdaq: 4,838, +38, (+0.8%)</li><li>WTI crude oil: $49.80, +2.5%</li><li>10-year Treasury: 1.67%</li></ul><h2>Brexit</h2>So, no Brexit?Markets woke up Monday to a huge rally around the world as stocks in Europe ripped higher by more than 3% after recent polls showed the spread between the 'Remain' and 'Leave' camp in the UK's EU referendum tighten in polls out over the weekend.On Thursday, as a quick reminder, the UK will vote on whether to remain a member of the EU or leave.Last week, polls gave the 'Leave' camp as much as a 6-point lead just about a week before Britons took to the polls, which gave financial markets the jitters as the potential for a 'Leave' vote and the unknown knock-on effects this could have on not only the European economy but London's standing as a financial center made investors wary.Betting markets and most of the conventional wisdom on Wall Street has said the 'Remain' camp is most likely to prevail, but the lead taken by 'Leave' last week gave this long-held belief reason to be doubted.This weekend, a poll for the Mail on Sunday by Survation gave the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-uks-in-camp-takes-3-point-lead-after-lawmaker-killed-poll-2016-6">In campaign 45% of the vote against 42% for Out.</a> A separate poll for the Sunday Times by YouGov had Remain at <a href="http://www.thetimes.co.uk/past-six-days/2016-06-19/news/no-turning-back-warns-cameron-pptvdnvxj">44% to Leave's 43%</a>, and an <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/18/eu-referendum-britain-voting-campaign-jo-cox">Opinium poll for the Observer put the two sides neck and neck at 44%.</a>In addition to stocks ripping higher, the British pound <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/eu-referendum-pound-jumps-on-jun-20-after-poll-showing-remain-vote-lead-2016-6">had one of its best days against the US dollar in a decade</a>, rising as much as 2.4% to as high as $1.4705 overnight. In late afternoon trading in New York the pound was up about 2.2% against the dollar to around $1.469. As The Wall Street Journal's <a href="https://twitter.com/Birdyword/status/744925232960417792">Mike Bird noted</a>, some estimates had put a potential move for the pound - which has slid considerably against the dollar for the last month - to as strong as $1.50, which would be a smaller move than what we saw on Monday (2.1% vs. about 2.2%). Said another way: if there's going to be a big relief rally in the case of a 'Remain' vote, we already saw most of it.Elsewhere in idle Brexit commentary, strategists at BNP Paribas asked rhetorically in a note to clients if the strong market move to Brexit polls signals an underlying fragility in the global financial system. I'm inclined to say maybe, as the recent dislocations we've seen over the last couple of years suggest a hypersensitivity to news flow.The question I think BNP might really be probing at is whether liquidity conditions are at fault or whether it's ease-of-trading innovations that make panicky investors more easily able to act on that panic?Among other possibilities, of course.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-oliver-brexit-breakdown-2016-6">And John Oliver said some things</a>.<h2>Real Estate</h2>Pimco says a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pimco-says-theres-a-storm-brewing-in-us-real-estate-2016-6">storm is brewing</a>" in the US commercial real estate market.They go all in on the metaphor:Storms form when moisture, unstable air and updrafts interact. Similarly, a confluence of factors - volatility in public markets, tightened regulations, maturing loans and uncertain foreign capital flows - is creating a blast of volatility for U.S. commercial real estate (CRE) that we anticipate could lower overall private U.S CRE prices by as much as 5% over the next 12 months. For nimble investment platforms, however, these swirling winds should create attractive opportunities over the secular horizon.An impending problem for the commercial real estate market, or more specifically the commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) market, is liquidity.As Pimco outlines, post-crisis regulations have limited the amount of CMBS that sit as inventory on dealer balance sheets leading to periods of stress in markets when hedge funds were forced to sell down their CMBS portfolios to meet redemptions. A sort of textbook example of why people are worried about bond market liquidity. Of course, as Pimco outlines in the chunk quoted above, if you are sitting on a bunch of cash the depressed prices of CMBS should create opportunities in coming year. Pimco also runs through the potentially fickle foreign capital flows that have created considerable demand for CMBS as negative or near-negative interest rates in other markets make what seem like expensive prices for these instruments relatively attractive. Also of note is Pimco's handwave towards the impending rush of non-bank capital onto the market (this could be, for example, pension funds trying to gain more credit exposure by investing in actual commercial mortgage deals, for example), as potentially filling a liquidity gap in the future. As we see banks pull back from a variety of markets someone is going to fill the gap. And pensions have big liabilities to fund. Just a thing I'm seeing. <h2>Federal Reserve</h2>Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen will be on Capitol Hill the next two days talking about monetary policy. Having heard twice from the Chair over the last couple of weeks, not much new is expected. Here's Deutsche Bank's Joe LaVorgna: "The Chair's prepared remarks are likely to mimic those of last week's post-FOMC press conference-we do not expect to learn anything new." So there's that. Most of the excitement around this testimony, referred to as the Humphrey-Hawkins testimony, is the questions Chair Yellen will field for roughly a combined four hours over the next couple of days. Expect questions about negative interest rates, helicopter money, and why interest rates aren't higher since savers are getting crushed. All of these questions, in my humble opinion, are sort of just sideshows, but then again what is the real goal of bringing the most important economist in the world before US lawmakers but to make these officials look smart? The most interesting Fed commentary hitting the inbox over the weekend came from Stephen Stanley at Amherst Pierpont, who was not taken in by the St. Louis Fed's new framework for thinking about policy. I <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/federal-reserve-regime-change-june-2016-2016-6">wrote over the weekend</a> that this changes the way we think about the Fed, which was sort of just taking the St. Louis Fed's suggestion that the economy does not move towards neutral states but exists inside regimes, at face value. Stanley thinks me and others like me who took this literally were sort of duped, writing in a note to clients (emphasis mine):If this new "model" is an earnest effort to provide a realistic forecast, then it is one of the more inane things that I have seen in all my years of Fed watching. I've seen a little Street economist commentary on the paper that seems to take the "model" literally, and my only reaction is to chuckle. I think this is something quite different.
