Most human resources (HR) professionals feel that business schools are not doing enough to address the skills gap facing organisations, a survey said. 
 "Only 29 per cent of the respondents felt that business schools are actually addressing the skills required at the workforce," according to a research on HR and business outlook conducted by <keyword id="1433263" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SP-Jain-School-of-Global-Management">SP Jain School of Global Management</keyword>. 

	A total of 61 per cent of HR professionals across organisations felt that business schools were somewhat addressing the skills gap and 10 per cent felt that B-schools were doing "very little". 
 

	The survey opined that this makes a very strong case for re-imagining management education itself. 
 SP Jain School of Global Management conducted the research across its campuses in Dubai, Singapore, Sydney and India among professionals from various sectors, including HR executives in <keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword>, <keyword id="34583" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceuticals">pharmaceuticals</keyword>, banking and financial services and hospitality sectors, among others. 

	The top skills identified as desirable for B-school graduates were managing complexity, innovative thinking, critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication skills, leadership and interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and diversity, decision making and problem solving, design thinking and dealing with ambiguity, it said. 
 Further, it said that promoting business growth has emerged as the top concern among <keyword id="674268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="HR-managers">HR managers</keyword> across the world, followed by managing costs, enhancing employee engagement and retention, aligning business with HR strategy and attracting talent for key positions. 

	Clearly there is a transformation here as HR has always been seen as primarily only responsible for attracting and retaining key talent, it added. 
 

	HR managers across the world agreed that 'managing employee expectations' was one of the major concerns that they were grappling with. 
 

	This is followed by aligning business and HR strategy, developing effective HR programs, upskilling HR professionals for the future and adopting new technology, the survey said. 
 

	"The importance of HR can never be overemphasised. It is fast emerging as the bedrock on which performance of companies will be benchmarked," said Christopher Abraham, the architect of the survey and HR thought leader at the SP Jain School of Global Management. 
 

	The survey also explored the top five retention strategies. Innovative and engaging work topped the list, which spoke about how the new age workforce is keen to be involved and contribute. 
 

	This was followed by work-life balance programs, meaningful benefits and incentives, competitive remuneration options and leadership development programs.

B-schools not doing enough to bridge skills gap: Survey

Australia emerges as the hottest employment destination for Indian graduates seeking overseas jobs

90 MBA graduates from SP Jain Global bag international offers — with an average salary of ₹20 lakh

<ul><li>Global advertising company Media.net is looking to hire engineering and management graduates across India. </li><li>The company plans to recruit over 60 engineering students from the top Indian institutions — including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). </li><li>The remuneration for engineering job roles will range from ₹15 lakhs to ₹28.5 lakhs and upto ₹34 lakhs for managerial roles.</li></ul>Global advertising company Media.net is looking to hire engineering and management graduates across India. The company plans to recruit over 60 engineering students from the top institutions including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Birla Institute of Technology and Science(BITS)and National Institute of Technology (NITs). These include jobs across software development and DevOps (Site Reliability) domains. According to the company, the remuneration for these job roles will range from ₹15 lakhs to ₹28.5 lakhs, depending on the role. Other than the core software roles, it will also hire nearly 80 freshers as web developers, UI developers, database engineer, business development associates, research analysts, and aata analysts. “With a major share of the marketers’ budget being allocated to digital ads, there is widespread demand for professionals to meet the growing needs of customers. These new hires will bring with them innovative ideas and help us build a next-gen technology platform,” the company said in a statement. While for the managerial roles, it is absorbing talent from top b-schools in India, including Indian School of Business (ISB), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and SP Jain Institute of Management and Research for product management, product analytics, and product marketing roles. A global adtech firm is looking for over 130 new engineering and management freshers in Mumbai and Bengaluru

<ul><li>India’s management schools have this year breached the mark of average salaries for MBA graduates at ₹ 2 million. </li><li>Several non-IIMs including SP Jain Institute of Management and Research and Xaviers School of Management have also been paying over ₹2 million average salaries. </li><li>University Business School (UBS), Punjab University (PU), recorded the highest package at ₹5.3 million this year. </li></ul>Beating the average salary packages offered in India, many top management schools in India have significantly scaled up the starting pay for students graduating in 2019. During the recent placement season, several B-schools — including Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/iit-bombay-placement-rs-32-4-lakh-top-package-for-mba-graduates-5554289/">Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)</a>, Bombay, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Indian Institute of Foreign Technology (IIFT), Delhi and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) — reportedly offered packages of more than ₹2 million to MBA batches. The highest packages were reported at more than ₹3 million, compared to the average at nearly ₹2 million. According to a Campus Salary Hiring and Employment 2018 report by Mettl, the average salary for MBA graduates last year was recorded as ₹930,000 per annum, which has increased to more than a million this season. The trend clearly indicates business school graduates are now commanding better starting pay. As many as 55 companies breached the average salary mark for MDI this year, for instance, according to ET report. And not all are from the prestigious IIMs. In fact, the highest-paid graduates this year are reportedly from the University Business School (UBS), Punjab University, where the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/chandigarh/ubs-touches-new-high-top-package-rs-53-lakh/711070.html">highest package</a> was recorded at ₹5.3 million this year. However, the average remuneration has been at ₹1.17 million for the 2018-19 batch. The average starting salaries for graduates of tier one colleges was recorded as ₹1.5 million, and tier two colleges at ₹534,000, annually, reports ET. The rise in pay may be because companies are now striving to hire quality talent with certain calibre and command, said Ketan Kapoor, Mettl. Startups, consulting firms and multinationals often chase the talent that they apparently find in premium business schools, he added. According to last year stats, the salary packages fetched by participating students crossed ₹2.4 million at the top three IIMs — Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Calcutta. However, several non-IIMs including SP Jain Institute of Management and Research and Xaviers School of Management also have a track of over ₹2 million average salaries by recruiters. Highest paymaster Consulting firms have been paying the highest to the fresh graduates, ET reported citing a senior official at IIM. The budget provides an indication of government’s intent. This was the 85th annual budget, and judging by the reaction of the market, one must certainly underline that it was a growth-oriented one.
 

	It is a welcome relief that the budget steered clear of populism and had a clear focus on fiscal consolidation, infrastructure and the depressed rural economy. Allocations for MGNREGA have been received well because it has demonstrated that the government is willing to support effective schemes, even if they were launched by the previous government.
 The government with its proposals showed its intent to stick to the roadmap for fiscal consolidation with next year’s <keyword id="6365485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fiscal-deficit">fiscal deficit</keyword> target at 3.5 per cent of the GDP. This is excellent from the point of view of how the world views India. 

	Looking to the demand for fiscal reforms on one side and the challenge of global headwinds on the other, the government’s decision to adhere to fiscal consolidation makes the budget pragmatic and prudent.
 Steps the government takes to boost growth would impact how India is perceived. Here the clear focus needs to be on the ease of doing business, providing a predictable tax regime, clarity on retroactive <keyword id="6383566" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Taxation">taxation</keyword>, disinvestment and curbing corruption. Naturally, passing the <keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword> bill would be the game changer. Also, being associated with a management school, I am happy to applaud the need to spread digital literacy in rural areas. Of the 16.8 crore rural households, as many as 12 crore households do not have computers and are unlikely to have digitally literate people. The budget has also announced the setting up of a <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> financing agency, with a fund of Rs 1,000 crore, and we need to wait a while to know what this means. 

	In a budget, one must understand is that it is impossible to satisfy everyone but one has to look to the basics, whether the budget is going to help the economy. However, a criticism could be that one did not see new schemes that could boost economic growth and attract much-needed investment. The budget offered the government an excellent platform to take advantage of the global economic slowdown. However, we don’t see any incentive for NRIs who are the natural resource base of the country.

Steps the government takes to boost growth would impact how India is perceived

Mumbai, Apr 7 () Even before the COVID-19 worries-led market rout dented the value of mutual fund investments, there are chances that the fund was anyways underperforming from a long-term perspective.According to a study by S&amp;P Indices Versus Active (SPIVA), for the five years ending December 2019, a majority of funds were underperforming.Typically, asset management companies say one must invest in mutual funds for the medium to long-term and see through near-term volatilities. However, massive correction of over 25 per cent in the benchmarks over the last two months have made investors worried over the value of their portfolios.The SPIVA study said 82.29 per cent of equity large cap funds, 78.38 per cent of the ELSS (equity linked savings scheme) funds and 40.91 per cent of Mid/Small Cap equity funds underperformed their respective indices in the five years.If one feels that the condition of the portfolio would be better from a longer time horizon, Akash Jain, the associate director for global research at S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices said majority of the actively managed large-cap equity funds in India underperformed the S&amp;P BSE 100 with 64.80 per cent large-cap funds underperforming over the 10-year ending in December 2019.Over the one-year period ending December 2019, the S&amp;P BSE 100 surged 10.92 per cent, while 40 per cent of the Indian Equity Large-Cap funds underperformed the benchmark, it said. Among all the categories evaluated in the SPIVA India Scorecard, the Mid-/Small- category fared the best for active funds with majority of them managing to beat the S&amp;P BSE 400 MidSmallCap Index across different time horizons studied in the report. Most mutual funds underperformed benchmarks during 2014-19 period: Report

In this year's letter, Buffett, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warren-buffett-longest-tenured-ceo-sp500-les-wexner-out-lbrands-2020-2">longest tenured CEO in the S&amp;P 500</a>, took time to discuss the plans for Berkshire Hathaway upon the deaths of himself, 89, and Charlie Munger, the vice chair of the company, 96. "Three decades ago, my Midwestern friend, Joe Rosenfield, then in his 80s, received an irritating letter from his local newspaper. In blunt words, the paper asked for biographical data it planned to use in Joe's obituary. Joe didn't respond. So? A month later, he got a second letter from the paper, this one labeled 'URGENT'," Buffett wrote. He continued: "Charlie and I long ago entered the urgent zone. That's not exactly great news for us. But Berkshire shareholders need not worry: Your company is 100% prepared for our departure."Buffett pointed to Berkshire Hathaway's structure, it's skilled and devoted top managers, and nurturing culture as reasons that he and Munger feel optimistic about the company's future.The letter also pointed to the two key Berkshire Hathaway executives that are thought to be in the running to succeed Buffet, Greg Abel and Ajit Jain. At this year's annual Berkshire Hathaway meeting, which takes place in Omaha, Nebraska, there will be one important change- shareholders will be able to ask Abel and Jain questions in addition to Buffett and Munger. "That change makes great sense. They are outstanding individuals, both as managers and as human beings, and you should hear more from them," Buffett said.

Mumbai, Mar 20 () The RBI on Friday appointed two additional directors on the board of Yes Bank -- former deputy governor of the central bank R Gandhi and Ananth Narayan, an associate professor at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. The appointment, effective March 26, will be for two years, the Reserve Bank said in a statement which comes a day after the private sector bank resumed full operations. March 26 is the day when the new management will take over after the administrator's term ends. Under the reconstruction scheme, which came into effect from March 14, RBI can appoint one or more persons as additional directors on the board of Yes Bank. On March 5, the RBI had superseded the board of Yes Bank and appointed Prashant Kumar, ex-DMD and CFO of SBI, as the administrator. The RBI-imposed moratorium was lifted on March 18. Kumar will take over as the CEO and managing director of the bank from March 26, seven days from the cessation of moratorium. The new board will be led by Sunil Mehta as the non-executive chairman and Mahesh Krishnamurthy and Atul Bheda as non-executive directors. SBI, being the single largest shareholder with almost 43 per cent stake, will have two board members -- deputy managing directors Partha Sengupta, who is also the chief credit officer at SBI, and G Swaminathan. B-school students who have been a part of <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> internships are often seen giving rave reviews about the company, and it's testimony to the fact that this e-commerce company manifests a great work culture for interns and employees alike. 
 We came across one such review by student <keyword id="186315" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="sakshi-singh">Sakshi Singh</keyword> who studies in <keyword id="3860398" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="shailesh-jain-mehta-school-of-management">Shailesh Jain Mehta School of Management</keyword>, IIT Bombay. She has always been "fascinated by the fast-paced, ever-changing world of e-Commerce." 
 
Sakshi got her first chance to experience the inside e-commerce world when she bagged an internship opportunity with Snapdeal during her summer placements. 
 
"I remember, after the selection process was over, HR tweeted a picture of us and since then I was even closely following Snapdeal all over from news feed to social media. I was waiting for my journey to kick-start," she wrote in her blog on Insideiim.com 
 Sakshi went on to explain why she fell in love with this company and is in awe of <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword>, the founder of Snapdeal. This is what her feedback tells us about the company: 
 
It's one hell of an easy going place 
"A day before joining, all interns received a mail stating that we needed to be in formals for Induction. So, we showed up in an exquisite Induction Hall the next day, all suited-booted and set to conquer the e-commerce world. But we soon learned that the HR managers were simply messing with us. Snapdeal doesn’t have a dress code. It’s a very open and informal place to be in. During induction, we learned more about Snapdeal and also about the heads of various verticals. They shared their vision for the organization and their functional expertise, which helped me frame the right approach for my coming days at Snapdeal..." 
 
Snapdeal has interactive, warm and motivating employees "Next day, I was warmly received by my mentor and manager and was introduced to the whole team. I was overwhelmed to know that my project was the key KPI of the whole team. But, it struck me - "What should I do now?" The project title was a 5-word sentence, the meaning of which was a struggle to decipher. Even <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> failed to help me. So, I had no option but to bother my team members on the very first day. After a few hours of discussion, I had a roadmap for me. In the course of the next 7 weeks, I interacted with numerous employees from multiple departments. Everybody I met at Snapdeal was very transparent, receptive and extremely supportive." 
 
It offers great exposure and provides superb mentors 
"The real challenge of my project was - In the current set of resources, the system can’t be optimized anymore. It either needed a lot of money or a lot of time. But the system definitely needed improvement. So, I decided to seek some guidance from my mentor. His simple reply to this was - Think innovative, Something new. You are new to the system, and so you don’t have any bias. So, just forget the system in place and find us a solution. 
 
It was here, Sakshi says, where her quest for innovation began. A comprehensive primary research plan was laid out. Right from visiting third party partners to listening to customer comments, competitor benchmarking, mystery shopping, surveys, understanding other functions inside Snapdeal, Sakshi was at her game in full force. "I used to discuss all my ideas with my team and manager, and almost on daily basis. I learned a lot from them. While research helped me in generating ideas, discussions helped me in full-proofing and validating those ideas." 
 
Interns are like permanent employees 
"At one point in time, I almost felt like a permanent employee, not just responsibility wise, but because I was also given the freedom to make my own decisions. I loved my job, I loved my office and I loved the energy at Snapdeal." 
 
There's opportunity for networking with other B-school students and learning from diversity 
"There was one more dimension to my internship. Snapdeal had interns from 15 different B-Schools in India and we all stayed together. This facilitated networking and knowledge sharing. I learned more about other B-Schools as well." 
 
You don't leave before a crazy and fun party 
"We interns had a super duper active WhatsApp group. You’re stuck with some problem, or just need a foosball partner, simply drop a text on WhatsApp group. Not to mention fun parties, Sunday shopping and late evening gossips. On our graduation day, we received an amazing party, heard straight from thwe founder Kunal Bahl, had good food, played kickass games, clicked a lot of pictures and bid goodbye to Snapdeal. 
 
She concluded saying - "The day I landed in Delhi, I had no clue what to expect but as I was leaving, I had a collection of memories and valuable lessons for a lifetime...."

After Gartner, WorkIndia, ride-hailing platform Uber has revoked job offers extended to the management graduates at premier b-schools like Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Management Development Institute (MDI) and S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). This comes on the backdrop of global layoffs across the company offices. As many as 3,700 Uber employees lost their jobs in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. On May 13, the company told its employees that “today will be your last working day with Uber,” over a Zoom call, IANS reported. A placement head at a top B-school told ET Uber had informed the institute that offers were being revoked. “Students across <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/topic/IIM">IIM</a> Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Calcutta, MDI, SPJIMR have been affected,” ET reported citing the placement head from a top b-school. Several companies have rescinded job offers made to the fresh graduates.That leaves students of premier IIMs and other b-schools that secured thousands of offers, in dire straits. It does not help that most of them bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season. Most of the recruits were top-notch consulting firms, multinational companies, tech majors and more. Lately, the IIMs have been dealing with last minute withdrawals from these high profile recruiters. IIM Bangalore earlier said that it will now reach out to those recruiters who had shown interest in hiring from the top institute earlier but were not a part of the placement drive — to check if they are still willing to hire candidates. At IIM Calcutta, nearly four companies have revoked the job offers and summer internships so far, affecting over 12 students from the current academic year. On the other hand, IITs — where students bagged job offers as high as ₹10 million from Uber — have not been notified of any such decision. The engineering institutions are now considering hosting another placement drive in July-August as the number of offers being taken back have risen. A US-based consultancy firm recently repealed 11 job offers made to students at IIT Delhi, Madras and Kanpur campuses. The situation, the institutes are now figuring out ways to place the students whose offers have been revoked in other companies. They are even reaching out to their alumni network to place students in the less affected sectors.
