<ul class="summary-list"><li>Surfer Ridge Lenny shared a story of his "heaviest wipeout" ever to TikTok in late January.</li><li>In a series of posts, Lenny told viewers about being tossed around like a "rag doll," by "Jaws."</li></ul><p>A 28-year-old surfer called Ridge Lenny has shared the extraordinary story of getting caught in the most dangerous wave he's ever tried to surf.</p><p>In a series of videos posted to TikTok in late January, Lenny described the experience of being pummeled by the ocean as like getting "hit by a freaking train" when trying to surf a wave known as "Jaws" that earned its nickname in 1975 after surfers <a href="https://www.mauimagazine.net/jaws-surfing-history/2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">described</a> it as having the "unpredictability and ferocity of a shark attack." The wave, reported to be the "largest, heaviest, and fastest wave of the Pacific Ocean," by <a href="https://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/jaws-interesting-facts-about-maui-big-wave-surfing-break" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Surfer Today</a> is in Lenny's native Maui, Hawaii, and its waves can reach heights of up to 80 feet.</p><p>On January 23, Lenny shared footage of himself surfing a massive wave with the on-screen caption: "It felt like the whole ocean ate me."</p><p>Viewers could see him race down the dark blue water as the wave crested and sea spray drew closer to him. After a few seconds, Lenny disappeared beneath it as the wave crashed. The video has since been watched more than 3.9 million times. </p> <p>In response to comments asking how Lenny survived, he posted a four-part storytime describing the "heaviest wipeout of my life" on <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ridgelenny/video/7193883240745340206?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7189743907088401966" target="_blank" rel="noopener">January 28</a>, sharing additional footage, which appeared to be shot from a camera placed on him, showing bubbles and swirling water.</p><h2>Lenny said being engulfed by the wave was like being tortured</h2><p>Lenny told viewers that on the day of the incident, he'd already surfed a couple of "sketchy" waves, almost falling off, but said he was still feeling good and wanted to push himself "even further" and get a "really big, good barrel." (In surfing, a barrel refers to when a surfer rides inside the curve of a wave as it breaks).</p><p>He waited, and when a radio call came in alerting him and his companions to a big incoming wave, Lenny got into position, he said.</p><p>As he glided across the water, he said he tried to stay calm, telling himself to "take some deep breaths, and try to focus on what you have to do to make this wave." Quickly, though, he realized how precarious his position was — telling viewers he realized the only way out of the wave was through a barrel.</p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn3Ej0pJkVV/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></p><div type="image" title="screenshot of a surfer riding a massive wave" height="731" width="715" msid="97747648" hostid="261" sizebytes="40292"></div> <p>As the wave began to pitch over him Lenny said he experienced a surreal moment.</p><p>"A wave that big, basically throwing over you — and you're like, sort of in this water tunnel — it's almost a view that is so hard for the brain to understand that you almost start short-circuiting and it just doesn't even feel real anymore," he explained. </p> <p>He said he thought it was going well until the barrel collapsed "like a tunnel caving in" — his "worst fear." All of a sudden, Lenny had no means of escape. He told viewers, in his fear, time slowed down. </p><p>Lenny described being "launched into the air" as a "cavern of water" opened up, and a sense of perpetual falling. Acting out of survival, he kicked his board away before his body made an impact with the waves.</p><p>"I've fallen on big waves before," he said, "but nothing like this." He said he was "engulfed" by the wave, sucked into a swirling avalanche of crushing water. He said he inflated his vest so it would, eventually, help bring him to the surface, and resigned himself to waiting, thinking that if he used his arms it would only waste energy. </p> <p>"It felt like I was hit by a freaking train," he told viewers of what he estimated was about 10 seconds of "utter violence," as the water exploded around him. "All of a sudden, you're just flipping and spinning as if you're a rag doll in a dog's mouth — just getting tortured."</p><p>Staying calm because, "once you panic, you can use a lot of air," he said he waited, lungs burning, until he finally surfaced, feeling "legitimately out of it," and with black spots in his vision.</p><h2>Lenny was rescued by a friend on a jet ski, he said</h2><p>With great relief, Lenny said he saw his friend, Ola Curnan, approaching on a jet ski. But the rescue attempt failed; he couldn't get into place securely and he realized that, unless Curnan left immediately, they would both be swallowed by a wave, with the added threat of a jet ski smashing through the water with them. </p> <p>"So I just start screaming, 'go!'" Lenny said. "I just made that decision, I gotta let go."</p><p>His friend, who Lenny described as "one of the best drivers in the world," did manage to escape. The second time, Lenny said the wave "clocked me in the back of the head" — again like being hit by a train — and the "whole nightmare just started over." </p><p>This time, Lenny told viewers he made a hard impact with the bottom of the reef, which he said was about 20 feet under the surface. "I've never touched it before," he explained. "It's really rare that anybody has and, if you touch it, you know you're fricking under."</p><p>Lenny said he entered survival mode: "This is the moment I need to dig deep," he told viewers, describing going to his "happy place" as the water spun him around.</p> <p>Once he surfaced, he said Curnan was riding to his aid again with a rescue ring outstretched. And, this time, the execution was perfect — enabling the pair to escape before any other wave could crash down.</p><p>Lenny, who said he later discovered he had gotten a concussion, described being "out of it" and "confused," and discovered one of his feet had been injured.</p><p>Beyond the confusion, he told viewers he felt immense gratitude, hugging Curnan. "I was just so grateful for it to be over and really grateful to even just be talking to my friend," he told viewers. </p><h2>Surfers have long expressed concerns about the dangers of taking risks with big waves</h2><p>Over the past decade, the surfing community has engaged in ongoing discussions about safety, rescue, and preparedness. The V1, a wetsuit designed with carbon-dioxide cartridges to inflate like an emergency vest on an airplane, was first developed by Hawaiian surfer Shane Dorian and his sponsor, Billabong, <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/sports/sporting-scene/seeking-safety-big-waves" target="_blank" rel="noopener">after Dorian almost drowned in 2010</a>.</p><p>For almost as long, athletes like Allbee Layer, a surfer known for his skill on Jaws, have feared that such improved life-saving tech, while important, can also lead to "reckless" surfing emboldened by a false sense of untouchability. (In 2016, <a href="https://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/albee-layer-survives-a-dangerous-wipeout-at-jaws" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Layer nearly died on the wave</a>).</p><p>"People of all skill levels are surfing so recklessly these days and going on absolutely crazy, un-makeable waves, myself included," he <a href="https://www.patagonia.com/stories/the-big-wave-safety-paradox/story-103624.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously told Patagonia</a> for a blog post. "I've personally had my worst and dumbest wipeouts in recent years because I feel safer wearing the vest," he later added. </p><p>"It's the nature of big-wave surfers to take risks," surfer Grant Washburn told Patagonia. "They push it as far as they think they can based on the available safety. In the beginning, that wasn't much, so the risks they took were somewhat reasonable. Now, the safety has seemingly eliminated most of the consequences. You can wipeout, inflate, get picked up by the ski, and go right back to the lineup."</p><p>Lenny said that in the aftermath he was resting and "laying low."</p><p>Altogether, Lenny's videos about the story racked up almost 5 million views. Viewers <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ridgelenny/video/7192071515590937899?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7189743907088401966" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> by jokingly telling Lenny "that's a tsunami, bro, that ain't a wave," and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ridgelenny/video/7193885628138966318?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7189743907088401966" target="_blank" rel="noopener">likening</a> his description of the water to that of being "trapped in a huge washing machine."</p><p>In the days since his original video went viral, Lenny has uploaded more surfing content to his <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ridgelenny" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a> (which has over 473,000 followers) and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ridgelenny/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a> (44,000 followers) — both already almost entirely surfing content.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 2020 GT is the "grand touring" model from <keyword id="64813" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="McLaren">McLaren</keyword>, boasting a comfortable ride and ample storage space via two trunks.</li><li>In fact, the combined storage space from its trunks is actually more than a Toyota Camry's trunk capacity.</li><li>The GT starts at $215,500, but my loaner came to $237,930 MSRP after options.</li></ul><p>I'm old enough to remember when there were no McLarens for sale. The only McLaren you could buy for the road was <a href="https://cars.mclaren.com/us-en/legacy/mclaren-f1">the hallowed F1</a>, which <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20070213011041/http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/cars/f1_production.htm">ended production in 1998</a>. Two decades and an exponentially heightened collector status later, most people don't have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/1994-mclaren-f1-auctioned-for-19-million-2019-8#:~:text=Monterey%20Car%20Week%20is%20a,to%20be%20auctioned%20this%20year.">a spare $20 million</a> to blow on an F1 at auction today.</p><p>But now there are many McLarens to choose from. McLarens that cost far less than $20 million. McLarens that have <a href="https://jalopnik.com/give-me-top-exit-exhausts-or-give-me-death-1827201559#_ga=2.237367176.928740838.1546822882-1329287156.1540411326">top-exit exhausts</a> — exhaust tips that point upward, because awesome — <a href="https://jalopnik.com/there-will-always-be-room-for-supercars-1832867383">McLarens without roofs</a>, and utilitarian McLarens with big trunks.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_57" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100038" hostid="261"></div>That brings us to the <keyword id="10238587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mclaren-gt">McLaren GT</keyword>. <h2><strong>The <keyword id="10238588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-mclaren-gt">2020 McLaren GT</keyword>: The one with the big trunk</strong></h2><p>In 2019, McLaren <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-us/releases/703">debuted</a> the new McLaren GT, calling it the "first true McLaren Grand Tourer in the McLaren product family." Yes, there indeed was the comfort-oriented <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-2017-mclaren-570gt-is-a-wicked-supercar-that-you-ca-1778688341">McLaren 570 GT</a> that came before this, but the past is the past!</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_54" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100040" hostid="261"></div>As its name promises, the GT is meant for comfortable long-distance driving with additional room for luggage. Other McLarens have been <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/the-mclaren-720s-is-a-supercar-for-daily-driving-1537898400">widely praised</a> for their everyday comfort, but the GT offers additional storage space not found elsewhere in McLaren's lineup. The car still uses a carbon-fiber monocoque called the MonoCell II-T as a lightweight and rigid chassis, but the "T" here stands for "Touring." <p>Basically, it just means that McLaren <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-us/releases/703#gallery">added</a> a carbon fiber upper structure behind the passenger cabin and made a luggage area above the engine. For anyone who's ever been annoyed that they can't take their McLaren on a cross-country road trip <em>and</em> fit "golf clubs or skis" in the back, this is the solution. We count our blessings in this house. </p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_18" height="1668" width="2500" msid="79100044" hostid="261"></div>Details and safety ratings: More trunk space than a Camry. Really.</strong></h2><p>The GT uses a mid-mounted, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that's good for a claimed 612 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. All of that is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. McLaren estimates the 0-to-60-mph sprint to happen in just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 203 mph.</p><p>It is 15.4 feet long, 6.7 feet wide, and stands about four feet tall. Staggered wheels mean the GT wears 20-inch wheels in the front and 21-inch wheels in the back, both of which are much larger than the 17-inch ones on your Hyundai Elantra. Curb weight comes to 3,384 pounds.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_44" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100045" hostid="261"></div>The McLaren GT's front trunk provides 5.3 cubic feet of storage space, and the rear 14.8 cubic feet. Combined, the two offer 20.1 cubic feet of storage room — which is actually more than the 15.1 cubic feet of space found in the single rear trunk on the <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/toyota-cms-media/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/2021_Toyota_Camry_Product-Information.pdf">Toyota Camry</a>. Huh!<p>The GT is also better on climate guilt than many of its <keyword id="731183" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supercar">supercar</keyword> pals, according to its EPA-estimated fuel economy: 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined. Sure, it's not outstanding. But this is a McLaren, not a Prius.</p><p>As is the case with many sports cars, the McLaren GT hasn't been rated for safety or crashworthiness by the National Highway <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_31" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79100048" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What stands out: Taking flight</strong></h2><p>Driving or riding in a car with a monocoque chassis doesn't feel quite like anything else. Because the structure is one solid piece, the whole car sort of behaves that way too. Going over a bump in a normal car splits the action in two: impact on the front wheels and then, a second later, impact on the rear wheels.</p><p>In the GT, bumps did not feel like this. Whatever affected the front was felt immediately throughout the entire car, similar to how turbulence feels when you're flying. The GT may be the "practical" McLaren, but it's maintained the wonderfully distinctive soaring sensation that other McLaren models have perfected. Your imagination wanders from merely cruising on the highway at 70 mph to gliding along in a low-flying fighter jet.</p><p>But tug on the left-hand transmission paddle — machined magnificently from what felt like a single piece of metal — and the dual-clutch snaps the gears down faster than a whip-crack. Punch in the accelerator and you've punched yourself straight for the horizon, the sound of those twin-turbos whooshing behind your head. </p><p>The GT's pièce de résistance, however, is its steering. It uses a electro-hydraulically assisted steering system, so there's no artificial feel — typically associated with electronically assisted steering — to worry about here. There's weight to it, but it's welcomed weight because you're able to tuck the nose precisely and directly into a corner every single time. Wondering what the front wheels are up to is for the birds, baby.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_19" height="1668" width="2500" msid="79100049" hostid="261"></div>And the trunks. At first, the idea of a McLaren with extra storage room seemed gimmicky to me. But as it turns out, the rear cabin does fit a good amount of stuff. The front trunk eats up your average-sized overhead suitcase. And there's a decent-sized parcel shelf right behind the passengers that fits a larger-sized overhead suitcase. Putting anything there severely restricts your rearward visibility, though.<p>The rest of the storage cabin is admittedly strangely shaped: It slopes over the engine compartment, while the "ceiling" is shaped by the tapered rear glass hatch closure. Whatever you put back there needs to be irregularly shaped or able to be compacted. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_2" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100051" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_4" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100054" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_3" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100056" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_5" height="1870" width="2500" msid="79100057" hostid="261"></div>Don't worry, though: McLaren has a bespoke, four-piece luggage set, exclusively designed to fit in the GT, available for purchase. <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-gb/releases/741">Yours for about $15,000</a>, or nearly the base price of that Elantra.<h2><strong>What falls short: Room for luggage and that's about it</strong></h2><p>There's no denying that the McLaren GT is a huge car. It's long and wide, and the up-swinging dihedral doors add about another two feet of width on either side. Unless you have a very big and tall space, this car will be a challenge to fit in most garages.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_48" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100062" hostid="261"></div>But despite how big the GT is from the outside, there aren't actually a whole lot of places to put loose items — purses, phones, keys, masks — once you're sitting in it. There are small door pockets and a couple of cup holders, but that's about it.<p>The interior layout, while providing ample luggage room and a space-age feel, was not great for small everyday things. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_49" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100154" hostid="261"></div>Did the people who designed the GT <em>not</em> carry loose items with them? Or did they perhaps merely <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/09/the-gender-politics-of-pockets/380935/">have the privilege of owning clothes that come with real pockets</a> and designed the car for this very same demographic? Unclear.<p>There's also the backup camera footage, which doesn't appear in the center infotainment screen as one would expect. Instead, it shows up in the driver information cluster, which is a nice idea until you remember you also need to steer in reverse sometimes.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_19" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100156" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_18" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100157" hostid="261"></div>In the GT, I felt like I was driving on eggshells. This wasn't only because of its $237,930 price, but because I had trouble seeing out of it. <p>Girl, let me tell you: You sit low and those fenders are <em>tall</em>. The hood slopes down and out of your line of sight. The vast rear end stretches out of your eye kingdom. On open stretches of highway, this is no problem at all. But life isn't all big, sweeping roads, Chuck! Sometimes it's tight parking lots and cramped streets.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_51" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79100161" hostid="261"></div>My greatest fear was curbing one of the lovely wheels — giant in diameter and shod with extremely low-profile Pirelli P-Zeros. A rolling risk, a constant test of my depth perception. Half of my driving around town relied on my own estimations, the other on faith alone. <h2><strong>How the GT compares to its competitors: The only one of its kind</strong></h2><p>Because the McLaren GT bills itself as a grand tourer, there is no shortage of competition. Most of it will be cheaper, though, because most of it isn't as cool.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_40" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100163" hostid="261"></div>Base MSRP of the GT comes to $215,500, but after options such as the electrochromic roof ($6,000), the MSO Bright Pack ($5,500; whatever that is), polished brake calipers with a black logo ($1,500), a luggage retention strap ($500; I could make this with a bungee cord), lithium-ion battery charger ($230; why?), warning triangle and first-aid kit ($100), car cover ($600), sports exhaust ($3,500), and Viridian exterior paint ($4,500), the final MSRP came to $237,930.<p>Sure, you've got your Bentley Continental GTs (<a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/bentley/continental-gt">$207,825</a>), Aston Martin DB11s (<a href="https://www.edmunds.com/aston-martin/db11/">$205,600</a>), Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupes (<a href="https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/build/s-class/coupe/s63c4">$171,400</a>), Porsche 911 Turbo S models (<a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/911/911-turbo-models/911-turbo-s/">$203,500</a>), and Ferrari GTC4 Lusso Ts (<a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/ferrari/gtc4lusso">$263,750</a>), but none of them have the same flair as the McLaren. </p><div type="image" title="Large 9 TheMcLarenMP4 12CCarbonMonoCell" height="1574" width="2500" msid="79100166" hostid="261"></div>They don't have swooping doors, the hammerhead-like face, the alien-looking interior, or a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. This McLaren has presence and it's made by people who know how to build fast things. If you're going to drop close to a quarter of a million dollars on a supercar that can <em>also</em> carry golf clubs, you can't really beat this one.<h2><strong>Our impressions: Performance over comfort</strong></h2><p>Thinking about the McLaren a month later, the thing I remember most is how much effort driving it commanded. I don't mean that it's difficult to drive, but rather that everything you touched to get it moving or stopping felt tight and purposeful. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_64" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100171" hostid="261"></div>You had to push a little harder on the brake and throttle pedals. The steering was always heavy, no matter the speed or drive mode, complementing the chassis wonderfully. The GT's exterior design might be a touch mellower, more streamlined, and less holey than the rest of McLaren's cars, but underneath, it's <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/134042/softball-began-play-hardball">soft like softballs are "soft."</a><p>Toss it into tight turns and the suspension staunchly refuses to lean, a mountain that refuses to bow to centrifugal force. The unshakable steering feels out the road like you're sweeping your palm across it.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_55" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100173" hostid="261"></div>I didn't find the sound of the twin-turbocharged V8 particularly beautiful, but it was neat to hear the turbochargers whoosh. Strangely, though, the 612-horsepower GT felt pretty tame. It's not slow by any means, but it doesn't lay into its power as ferociously as other McLarens do. <p>Perhaps this had to do with being turbocharged, as I detected some lag — or maybe the sensation of having your face torn off isn't the GT's M.O. This is the long-distance McLaren, remember, not the face-tearing sprinter. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_36" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100175" hostid="261"></div>But it's clear, especially when you consider everything it's up against, that McLaren still values performance over comfort. Distilled, the GT is a mid-engined car and with carbon-fiber tub — bones that make sense, because it was built by a company that has only ever known race cars and seismically fast road cars. Here are the American goods that will get hit hardest by China's latest round of tariffs

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Inhabitants of New York City know winter. The cold, the snow, the endless muddy slush, and the black ice lying in wait at every street corner - these are the things city-dwellers prepare for each year.</p>
<p>With another freezing February already in full swing, it may seem hard to imagine a winter in the Big Apple without these icy characteristics. But climate scientists from <a href="http://www.climatecentral.org/">Climate Central</a>, a nonprofit organization dedicated to communicating climate <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> to the public, report that milder seasons may be on their way.</p>
<p>Researchers from Climate Central recently compiled <a href="http://www.climatecentral.org/news/winter-is-losing-its-cool-18635">winter projections for 697 US cities</a> and put together a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-will-make-winters-warmer-2015-2">handy interactive graphic</a> to explain the results. In each case, the graphic communicates how many below-freezing nights the city typically experiences in the winter and then tells how many below-freezing nights the city can expect, based on the latest climate models, in the year 2100. Finally, the graphic compares the projected number to another city in the US that already usually experiences that number of below-freezing nights.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>The graphic shows us that, currently, New York City gets 79 nights below freezing each winter. But in 2100, the city can expect only 29 below-freezing nights. That's the same number Killeen, Tex. usually gets today.</p>
<p>To be clear, this doesn't mean New York's average temperature will necessarily become the same as Killeen's. The data only suggest that the number of freezing nights will drop substantially in New York City.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>But speaking of temperature, a separate Climate Central data analysis indicated that the state of New York has been warming for several decades, with an overall increasing trend in its average winter temperature. The analysis also pegs New York as the eleventh-fastest warming state in the country, with temperatures rising at a rate of 0.91 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>For New Yorkers who rejoice at the idea of milder winters, Climate Central has some bad news: "But warmer winters can have negative impacts: ski resorts need freezing temperatures for snow, some crops rely on a chill period, and pests can flourish year-round if winter temperatures aren't cold-enough for them to die off," the researchers write.</p>
<p>Luckily, these winter projections assume that carbon emissions will keep on increasing throughout the century, as they have done for the past several decades, pushing global temperatures skyward. This means if we can cap global carbon emissions soon enough, we might be able to save winter - not just in New York, but around the world.</p>

<p>Metropolitan life is never dull, but not everyone is cut out for a big city. </p>
<p>City data resource <a href="http://livability.com/best-places/top-10/best-small-towns/10-best-small-towns/2014">Livability</a> determined the 10 best small towns in America as part of its <span>2015 list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live.</span></p>
<p>Looking just at "micro<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">politan" areas with populations of fewer than 20,000 people, the folks at Livability factored in cost of living, health care spending, diversity, crime rates, civic engagement, natural resources, as well as visitor and resident opinions of the towns to come up with the ranking.</span></p>

<h3>10. Hailey, Idaho</h3>

It's a <em>memento mori</em> for the former Aetna CEO, a symbol of his mortality. He bought it after waking up from a six-day coma in 2004, when a skiing accident broke his neck in five places and resulted in his left arm being permanently disabled. It happened just a year after his teenage son Eric managed to beat lymphoma. When he looks at the skull, he's reminded that "who you spend your time with and how you spend it every day are the two most important decisions you will make," he told Business Insider.</p><p>We spoke with Bertolini in late February, at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/cecp">CECP</a>'s <a href="https://cecp.co/home/our-coalition/strategic-investor-initiative/">CEO Investor Forum</a>, and ahead of the release of his new memoir, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mission-Driven-Leadership-Journey-Radical-Capitalist/dp/0525572791/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0">Mission-Driven Leadership</a>."</p><p>The exec, who grew up in Detroit, says he was the first member of his blue-collar family to attend college. He worked his way through the healthcare industry before making it to the top job at Aetna in 2010.</p><p>Bertolini's last act as CEO was closing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cvs-pharmacy-aetna-merger-approved-with-some-conditions-2018-10">$69 billion sale of Aetna to CVS Health</a> in a deal that made CVS CEO Larry Merlo the chief executive of both companies and left Aetna president Karen Lynch as Bertolini's successor.</p><p>His time at the health-insurance provider was marked by an average of 20% annual growth of earnings per share, and a revamping of employee benefits that included a minimum wage increase to $16 an hour and the widespread implementation of yoga and meditation classes. He developed a passion for the latter after kicking a painkiller habit that arose in the wake of his accident. These healthier habits also led to the adoption of Buddhism and the abandonment of a ruthless executive persona employees once characterized as "Darth Vader."</p><p>"I often say to people that I've been uniquely prepared to do the work I do given the personal experiences I've had and the things I've had to live with," he said. "And while I wouldn't change a bit of it if I had the chance, I would not recommend it as a developmental pathway!"</p><p>We talked about some of these experiences, and how writing his book gave him a chance to reflect on them.</p><p><em>The following interview was edited for clarity and length.</em></p><h2>Letting go of Darth Vader</h2><p><strong>Mark Bertolini:</strong> It was 2001 when Eric got sick. I'd sold my first company in '94, and my second company in 1998. I got paid a lot of money, and I was living in this mansion on the mountain in Avon, Connecticut. I was just back from Italy, and all of a sudden my son got sick and my money didn't matter, my position didn't matter. What I realized over a period of three or four months is that I had to personally engage. What I realized in that personal engagement is how little time I had spent with him. So I literally lived in his hospital room with him - I even moved a bed in there.</p><p>He was in the hospital about a year, and then in and out for a few months after that. But I just left work.</p><p>I had PubMed on the laptop, "Harrison's [Principles of] Internal Medicine" text with a bunch of little sticky notes, and I grilled the medical team every morning: "What are we doing today? Why does it matter? Where do I read about it?" And it was through that process that we got two drugs approved for him and ultimately, it saved his life and then it was five years later, I gave him my left kidney because his kidneys were damaged by the cure. But all of that was so humbling.</p><p>And then my injury happened. I was the guy that, at 184 pounds, 8% body fat, ran four miles every morning, worked out at the gym. I was in tip-top shape. I was 47 years old and all of a sudden, I hit a tree and none of that worked anymore, and I was like, "Oh my God, what a disaster." After my son's illness and then that, it was like, "OK, this isn't about me."</p><p><strong>Richard Feloni:</strong> Are you referring to life in general?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> Yes, life in general. In the middle of all that, I left the Catholic church over the whole Boston abuse revelations. And so I was all of a sudden non-religious. I was in incredible pain. I was on seven different narcotics, and to come out of that, you have to reinvent who you are. I first tried to get it all back and realized that wasn't going to work if I had my motorcycles, if I had my bicycle.</p><p>I had to reinvent everything, and in that reinvention come face-to-face with the narcissism, the lack of humility, all those other sorts of things.</p><p><strong>Feloni: </strong>Weren't you known as "Darth Vader" before this?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> Yes, yes I was, [because] I was not afraid to make decisions. If you're willing to make [a decision] and you're willing to monitor the progress of the decision you made, you'll make it better as you go along. But most people won't make a decision because they're afraid of being wrong, which most decisions are until you get into it.</p><p><strong>Feloni:</strong> Did thinking about things that were bigger than yourself help you become a more empathetic leader?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> It did. I went through an evolution of having all the answers to realizing I had very few answers, and I started engaging the group and learning from them. I had some brain injury from the accident, so I had to go through all of that realizing who I was and what my role was going to be. Not working was not an option for me - although I could've done that.</p><h2>Investing in employees before it was cool</h2><p><strong>Feloni:</strong> How long from this point did it take you to get to this idea of being (as you've put it) a "radical capitalist"?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> I did things before anybody else was talking about doing them: Raising minimum wage, waiving out-of-pocket costs, paying back student loans, paying people to sleep, investing in the employees. I had come up with the notion that talent was more scarce than capital, and I was asking, "What is it we need to believe in order to take this set of risks and be successful?"</p><p>It was actually the yoga and mindfulness that opened the whole door for the rest of it. I was doing that to deal with my pain. I wasn't taking opioids - I still don't - and I came to work and said to the senior team, "I think we should have everybody learn yoga mindfulness." And they all nodded politely because I was the president at the time, and then about an hour later, the chief medical officer came in and said, "Mark, this is voodoo medicine. You're crazy. We all think you're crazy. Just because you do it doesn't mean everybody else has to do it." And I said, "OK, well what do you need to do to believe it?" And he said, "We need to do a double-blind study."</p><p>So we did, and two months after the double-blind study with Duke was done, he came and said, "You're not going to believe this: It actually works."</p><p>It took a long time, way longer than I wanted to, but it was about a year where I finally said to the team, OK, I'm tired of talking about spreadsheets. We're gonna raise minimum wage from $12 to $16 an hour, and we're going to wipe out healthcare costs for everybody under 300% of the poverty level.</p><p>And when we did that and watched the results, it was amazing. Our employee engagement went up 1,200% not only in those employees, but in the whole company. What happened next was the most profound piece: Everybody started coming back to me with ways we could take care of each other.</p><p>I talk about the four levels of leadership. The first level is your employees hate you. The second level is your employees fear you. The third level is your employees praise you. The fourth level, you're invisible because your organization takes care of itself and that's what happened the last three, four years.</p><p>That's the legacy I want to leave: An organization of people that get it, they make it better, they keep it going. I don't need to tell people what to do.</p><h2>How to know when it's time to move on</h2><p><strong>Feloni: </strong>With the book, you took time to look back on your career. What's next for you, and what do you want to accomplish?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> I don't live the lifestyle of the traditional CEO - I come from a pretty humble background. When the deal closed, I had almost three million shares of stock, and I never used it because I didn't need it. So the vast majority of that has gone into taxes, my family foundation (called Anahata), and then trusts for grandchildren and children. My wife and I kept a little bit of it, but the majority of it is in the foundation.</p><p>The idea there is to use that foundation to create community, and to focus on three things. First, in education. My wife works in the Harlem schools with kids on literacy. Second is the environment, and we've invested heavily in preserving carbon sinks, so buying forest land that will never be built on or chopped down. And then sustainability, how do we create sustainable communities. That will be the work, and I'll be engaged in that because it's interesting to me and exciting for me. I'm on a number of boards of directors.</p><p>So that's sort of occupying my time. I probably won't jump into a full-time job unless I'm dragged back into it. I want a portfolio of interesting things to do. I've been working since I was 13, so it would be kind of nice at 62 not to have to work anymore and make decisions tougher than what kind of coffee do I grind this morning.</p><p><strong>Feloni:</strong> What's your best leadership advice?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> Setting goals only establishes disappointment. The deeper understanding one should have is what is it that you do really well, that you love to do, and look for work that supports that. And if you do that, you'll have an incredible career.</p><p>My proclivities are to fix broken things and build new things. I hate just making sure the trains run on time. I always hire people that can do that part really well, and I've been surrounded by people like that for the last 20 years. I've been able to look at what's next, what can we fix, what can we make better. Because if things are running really well, I'll tinker with them just to see if they can be better than they are.</p><p>I've never looked for a job other than my first job. The phone's always rang to offer me something. People will call me and say [they've] got this issue or that issue. If it's something I like, I'll offer to help. That's how I've gotten every job I've had - and because it's work I love to do and I do it well, I have a lot of fun doing it.</p><p>Probably the hardest part [of retiring] is you should be prepared when you're done to have things you need to do that are just as interesting, otherwise you'll regret the fact that you don't have a job anymore. I think that's where a lot of CEOs in particular fail.</p><p><strong>Feloni:</strong> Did you leave Karen Lynch with strategic insights before departing your role?</p><p><strong>Bertolini:</strong> Oh yeah, Karen worked with me for a long time. It was a very purposeful development process for her, and I think she's going to be in a great place. She has every opportunity to run that company [CVS] one day and I think she can do it, and I'm going to support her in trying to achieve that.</p><p>When I handed her the president's job, I said to her, "At some point you will realize you've been doing the president's job too long because you'll see an issue and you'll go, 'I know how to do that. I did that [back then],' and that's when you make mistakes."</p><p>The leading cause of failure is success. When it became too rote for me, I knew I needed to have somebody else do it. She's taken it to a whole different level. Again, the legacy is that she took things I had figured out and she made them better, and she has built her own things that she'll pass on to somebody else. And that's what [former Aetna CEO] Ron Williams did with me. That's what real legacies are, the work they leave behind. She's got a big job to do.
