A recent report by Axis AMC shed light on the burgeoning Indian mutual fund industry. Since March 2021, the MF industry has grown at a CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) of 23.65%, touching an AUM (asset under management) of Rs 67.25 lakh crore in October 2024. <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Equity-Mutual-Funds" source="keywords">Equity mutual funds</keyword>, which garnered Rs 41,886.69 crore during the month, saw a 58.96% YoY growth. The biggest contributor to the equity segment was sectoral funds, which captured 29.3% of net equity sales in October 2024. In all, they brought in Rs 12,278.78 crore during October 2024. The AUM of <keyword id="20890471" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hybrid-Funds" source="keywords">hybrid funds</keyword> also stood at Rs 9.24 lakh crore during the month, registering an annual growth of 47.8% and inflows worth Rs 16,863.30 crore during October 2024. Amidst this, the arbitrage funds led in net sales, capturing 3.61% of their AUM with monthly inflows worth Rs 7,181.70 crores. There and more people are entering the Indian markets, as is evident in the growing SIP corpus (Systematic Investment Plans), which saw contributions worth Rs 25,323 crore in October 2024, a 54.7% year-over-year growth. In October 2024, about 63,69,919 new SIPs were registered, taking the number of SIP accounts to a record high of 10,12,34,212 The growth in equity investments was largely led by retail investors and HNIs (high-net-worth individuals). Since March 2021, the retail segment in mutual funds has seen a 31.2% CAGR, while banks and foreign investors have recorded a CAGR of 31.8% during the same period. Corporations were the biggest contributors to debt mutual funds. Notably, the AUM of debt funds grew 14.8% over the previous year to stand at Rs 10,65,037 crore as of October 2024. The category saw net sales worth Rs 47,699 crore last month. Also testimony to the growing interest of investors in mutual funds were the figures of <keyword id="23958398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Passive-Mutual-Funds" source="keywords">passive mutual funds</keyword>, which recorded net sales worth Rs 8,025 crore during the month. Out of this, just index funds observed net sales of Rs 7,931 crore in the previous month. AUM from the top 30 Indian cities grew at 22.6% CAGR, whereas other cities grew at 27.8% CAGR since March 2021. FY25 also seemed to be the year where NFOs received an enthusiastic response from investors. So far, a total of 124 NFO schemes have managed to collect a total of over Rs 77,932 crore.

Mutual funds in spotlight: Industry grew at 23.65% CAGR since March 2021

<ul><li>According to AMFI data, <keyword id="19978171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="as-of-early-december" source="Orion">as of early-December</keyword>, the average one-year returns for 23 small-cap funds stood at 32.68%. </li><li>58% of the large cap funds failed to beat their underlying indices in the first half of 2023. </li><li>Contributions to <keyword id="159805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sips" source="Orion">SIPs</keyword> surpassed a record ₹17,000 crores in November. </li></ul>After a brutal 2022, <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">mutual funds</keyword> have had a solid year in 2023 with retail investors having come of age. Moreover, according to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data, mutual funds industry assets under management (AUM) have crossed the ₹50 lakh-crore mark! Investments into equity mutual funds saw an inflow of ₹124,053 crore in the first nine months of 2023 indicating a strong interest and belief in the potential of the equity market among domestic investors. This was not of course without its share of blips. In April 2023, inflows into equity mutual funds stood at ₹6,480 crore, down 68% from March when it was ₹20,534 crore. Last time inflows were lower was in November 2022, when it stood at ₹2,258 crore. Inflows into equity mutual funds again halved in May, probably because high market valuations made investors book profits and stay away from fresh investments. However, ever since then the flows into equity mutual funds have remained steady, reaching a high of ₹19,932 crore crore in October. Small and mid caps steal the show According to AMFI data, as of December 6, 2023, the average one-year returns for 23 small-cap funds stood at 32.68%. In contrast, 28 mid-cap funds delivered average one-year returns of 28.02%, in the same period. By November end, AUM of mid-cap funds had crossed the ₹ lakh crore mark, a 69% rise as compared to last year. In fact, small cap funds registered inflows of ₹3,699.24 crore in November ,slightly lower than the ₹4,495.13 crore recorded in October. Small cap funds had registered a record inflow of ₹5,472 crore in June, with inflow into small cap mutual funds being the highest among all equity fund categories for the third straight month. In August, small cap funds saw an inflow of ₹4,265 crore, with a slight blip in September when inflows fell to ₹2,678.47. This has been driven by the ongoing economic recovery, which has fueled corporate earnings growth, particularly among smaller companies with high-growth potential. Investors are optimistic about the future prospects of these companies, leading them to seek exposure through small-cap funds. AMFI chairman said it was the outcome of a recency bias. The surge in investor interest in mid-cap funds has also been fueled by several factors, including India's robust economic recovery, the inherent growth potential of mid-cap companies, their reasonable valuations compared to large-cap stocks, and supportive government policies. Large-cap funds funds underperform Large cap funds, however, had a rather dull 2023. Large-cap mutual funds experienced significant outflows in June, July, and May, totaling ₹2,050 crore, ₹1,880 crore, and ₹1,362 crore, respectively, making these some of the worst months for large cap funds. However, following six consecutive months of outflows, large-cap funds experienced an inflow of ₹724 crore in October, signaling a resurgence in investor confidence in established companies. November saw an inflow of ₹306 crore. In fact, 58% of the large cap funds failed to beat their underlying indices in the first half of 2023. This can be due to the confluence of factors, including rising interest rates favoring bonds, regulatory changes limiting fund manager flexibility, investor rotation seeking higher growth in smaller-cap stocks, and underperformance in key sectors like technology and consumer discretionary. SIP contributions witness a steady rise One of the biggest trends is the steady increase in monthly SIP contributions. SIP inflows reached ₹1.66 lakh crore in the first 11 months of 2022, higher than ₹1.5 lakh crore in entire 2022. Contributions surpassed a record ₹17,000 crores in November. In November 2022, the SIP contribution stood at ₹13,306 crore. The number of SIP accounts were at the highest ever in November at 744.13 lakh crore, compared to 730.02 lakh crore in October. The total SIP AUM (assets under management) has also shown impressive growth, exceeding ₹6.42 lakh crores in October. Despite facing market fluctuations, SIPs have demonstrated remarkable resilience. The consistent inflows and stable AUM indicate that investors are adopting a disciplined approach and remain confident in the long-term prospects of the market.

Retail investors come of age in 2023 with small and midcap funds outperforming

Amazingly, the drink <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-1-dollar-menu-myth-most-cost-more-2023-8">still only costs a dollar</a>. Otherwise, they'd probably have to figure out a different name. Beginning on Sunday, customers can buy $1 margaritas at participating Applebee's locations."We've got our team members all geared up," Chief Marketing Officer Joel Yashinsky told Insider. "Our franchisees are excited and we're expecting a really great reaction from all of our fans and all of our guests."Applebee's is promoting the drink with a <a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/gslKcMo-jVw.">15 second commercial</a> set to the opening of Ozzy Osbourne's song "Crazy Train," that will air on Sunday."We have a great partnership with NBC, Football Night in America, and Sunday Night Football," Yashinsky said, "and there'll be a lot of attention on that game with the Kansas City Chiefs and their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-economy-nfl-eras-tour-2023-9">new biggest fan, Taylor Swift</a>."This year, Applebee's parent company Dine Brands noticed customers are becoming more cautious in their spending, CEO John Peyton said in the company's August earnings call. The number of guests selecting limited-time and value offers from Applebee's menus increased to 19% in the second quarter, compared to 15% in the first."Across the industry, we noticed our competition leaning heavily into promotions, which also contributed to the headwinds this quarter," Peyton said.With its value pricing, Applebee's is hoping the Dollarita is just one more reason <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-consumer-spending-down-breaking-2023-9">cash-strapped Americans</a> choose the restaurant for a night out."We certainly know at the moment that there's a lot of pressure on our guests and on their pocketbooks," Yashinsky said. "We want Applebee's to be at the top of that list of their selections."<h2>A brief history of the Dollarita</h2>Applebee's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/applebees-1-margaritas-dollaritas-deal-2017-10">introduced the Dollarita</a> in October 2017. At first, franchisees worried that it would discourage food orders and get customers too drunk, Insider reported.But Steve Joyce, who served as the CEO of parent company Dine Brands until 2021, told Insider that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/applebees-dollarita-sparked-turnaround-ceo-says-2018-11">Dollarita helped turn the chain around</a> after it struggled to grow sales. After introducing the drink, Applebee's posted four consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.The company brought the drink back in April 2018 and then introduced a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/applebees-dollaritas-drink-deal-april-2019-4">strawberry flavor Dollarita</a> in August of that year.<h2>Customers requested the $1 marg's return</h2>While October marks the sixth anniversary of the Dollarita's launch, Yashinsky said that customer demand was the main reason for the drink's return."It's the number one thing our guests ask for," he said. "It was certainly one of our biggest fan favorites and so we're just super excited to be able to bring it back."Yashinsky said he's also excited to see how a younger generation, who will be trying it for the first time, responds to the drink. "We're going to be having a lot of new guests that are now 21 or older," he said. "There's that next group coming in that's going to be able to really enjoy this, including my daughter."<h2>How does it still cost a dollar?</h2>While the Dollarita recipe remains the same, the company has made one slight tweak. Along with tequila and lime, the drink will now contain triple sec."That really authentic margarita taste, it comes through a little bit stronger," Yashinsky said.Despite inflation, Yashinsky said Applebee's is able to keep the original $1 offer price because the ingredients have not increased in cost. "The tequila and the triple sec and the lime, it all is relatively stable versus where it was six years ago," he said.The company is marketing the drink as a limited-time offer. Yashinsky did not provide an exact end date, though he told Insider that in the past, Applebee's has run the offer for a month at a time. Applebee's October bar menu also includes two Halloween-themed $5 "spooky sips.""We have a nice balance for whatever type of drink folks want to have," Yashinsky said. "From the Dollarita to the perfect margarita, it's going to be a fun October."

New Delhi, Feb 10 () The mutual fund industry saw its asset base rise to an all-time high of Rs 27.85 lakh crore at the end of January, on the back of inflows in equity and debt-oriented schemes including liquid funds. The 44-player industry logged an assets under management (AUM) of Rs 26.54 lakh crore at the end of December, compared with Rs 27.85 lakh crore by January-end, representing a growth of 5 per cent, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi). At the end of January 2019, the asset base of the mutual fund industry had stood at Rs 23.37 lakh crore. Mutual fund houses witnessed an overall inflow of Rs 1.2 lakh crore last month as compared to an outflow of Rs 61,810 crore in December 2019. Fund managers attributed growth in the asset base to strong inflows of around Rs 1.09 lakh crore in debt-oriented schemes. Among debt-oriented schemes, liquid funds, with investments in cash assets such as treasury bills, certificates of deposit and commercial paper for shorter horizon, received flows worth about Rs 59,683 crore, the highest among the fixed-income segment last month. In addition, overnight funds, invest in securities with a maturity of one day, received flows worth about Rs 22,652 crore. The open-ended equity and equity-linked saving schemes witnessed an infusion of Rs 7,877 crore, while there was an outflow of Rs 330 crore in close-ended equity plans, taking total equity inflows to Rs 7,547 crore last month. In December, net inflow in such schemes stood at Rs 4,432 crore. "Mutual fund industry's AAUMs (average assets under management) stood at an all-time high of Rs 28.18 lakh crore in January, driven by positive flows in all categories of open-ended schemes and growing retail monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP)," Amfi Chief Executive Officer N S Venkatesh said. He added that the SIP's monthly contribution at an all-time high of Rs 8,532 crore AUM in January and its total AUM of Rs 3.25 lakh crore is a recognition of the retail investors' acceptance of mutual funds as a long-term wealth creation avenue, amid market volatility. Besides, gold exchange-traded funds saw an inflow of over Rs 202 crore after witnessing an inflow of Rs 7 crore in the preceding month. Prior to that, the safe-heaven asset saw an infusion of Rs 31.45 crore in October, Rs 44 crore in September and Rs 145 crore in August. Sundeep Sikka, executive director and CEO, Nippon Life India Asset Management said, "With the Union Budget 2020 and subsequent RBI policy leading several structural changes, we will continue to stay optimistic on the market outlook." He also added that the retail investors may continue investing in the markets through SIPs, while staying balanced in their investing approach between different asset classes. Venkatesh said, "We expect this positive growth momentum in mutual fund AUMs to continue, driven by growth-oriented Budget and the RBI's (Reserve Bank of India) stance on continuing benign interest rate cycle, resulting in 15-20 per cent growth for the mutual fund industry this fiscal." He further said the government's decision to withdraw exemptions in the new tax regime will not impact flows into ELSS schemes. People who fall in the higher end of the tax bracket would continue to invest in ELSS and, so, demand may not subsidise, he added. SP HRS
