Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are also a possible investment route for people who want exposure to gold, but they come with their own issues like – tracking errors, management expenses, and they also attract capital gains tax depending on the tenor of holding. SGBs, according to the analysts at ICICI Direct, are the best way to take exposure to gold as an asset. But what exactly are SGBs? Simply put, these are government securities denominated in grams of gold. Like digital gold, investors do not get to see or feel their purchases. However, SGBs have a few advantages over digital gold, including – a 2.5% interest on the amount invested, no capital gains tax on redemption, and no GST on purchases. RBI is also offering a discount of ₹50 per gram of gold in its latest SGB tranche if payment is made via digital means. This brings down the effective price to ₹5,561 per gram, as against the issue price of ₹5,611. It is worth noting that to take full advantage of the benefits of SGBs over other modes of investing in gold, investors will have to hold the bond till maturity, since capital gains tax is exempt only on redemption. Mumbai, Apr 17 () The issue price for the Sovereign Gold Bond has been fixed at Rs 4,639 per gram of the yellow metal, the Reserve Bank said in a statement on Friday. The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2020-21-Series I will be opened for subscription from April 20 to 24, 2020. Earlier this week, the central bank had said the government will issue Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) in six tranches beginning April 20 till September. Sovereign Gold Bond 2020-21 will be issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on behalf of the government. "The nominal value of the bond based on the simple average closing price [published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA)] for gold of 999 purity of the last three business days of the week preceding the subscription period...works out to Rs 4,639 per gram of gold," the RBI said. It further said the government has also decided to offer a discount of Rs 50 per gram to those investors applying online and where payment against the application is made through digital mode. For such investors, the issue price of bond will be Rs 4,589 per gram of gold. The bonds will be denominated in multiples of gram(s) of gold with a basic unit of 1 gram and the tenor of the SGB will be eight years with exit option after fifth year to be exercised on the interest payment dates. The bonds are restricted for sale to resident individuals, HUFs, trusts, universities and charitable institutions. The minimum permissible investment will be 1 gram of gold and the maximum limit of subscription shall be 4 Kg for individuals, 4 Kg for HUFs and 20 Kg for trusts and similar entities per fiscal (April-March). The gold bond will be sold through banks (except small finance banks and payment banks), Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), designated post offices, and recognised stock exchanges (NSE and BSE). SGB is a substitute to physical gold and a paper issued by the government denominated in terms of grams of gold. Basically, SGBs give investors an exposure to gold, but not in a physical form like gold bars or jewellery. The tenor of the SGB is eight years, however, if the investors want to withdraw the bond before this period, then the facility is available after the fifth year from the date of issue on coupon payment dates. Those who hold the bond in the demat account can trade it on National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE. Others can approach their agent, bank, post office or Stock Holding Corporation of India limited (SHCIL) office in case of premature redemption. On Thursday August 5, on the multi commodity exchange, gold futures were down moderately at ₹47,888 per 10 gram. In the last three months from May 3 to August 3, gold futures on MCX have gained 1.05% in rupee terms. Overall, SGBs are backed by the government and hence are considered to be safer for investment. However, commodity experts believe that going ahead gold will continue to gain in value. “A stronger US Dollar ahead of key US economic data due later in the week might continue to weigh on gold prices; however, rising cases of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is expected to keep the demand for the safe haven elevated,” said Prathamesh Mallya, assistant vice president of research, non-agri commodities and currencies at broking firm Angel Broking. When the dollar gains value ⁠— all other factors remaining the same ⁠— the international price of gold, pegged in dollar terms, falls. “Right now there is enough liquidity in the market to sell every <keyword id="1508043" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-bond">gold bond</keyword>. So there is no point selling it prematurely. If one is trying to play the gold market saying if it goes up I will sell and if it comes down I will buy then they are better off in exchange traded funds (ETFs).
