RBI is also offering a discount of ₹50 per gram of gold in its latest SGB tranche if payment is made via digital means. This brings down the effective price to ₹5,561 per gram, as against the issue price of ₹5,611. It is worth noting that to take full advantage of the benefits of SGBs over other modes of investing in gold, investors will have to hold the bond till maturity, since capital gains tax is exempt only on redemption. Although gold has historically given better returns over long time periods, there may be cycles where gold doesn’t perform. For instance, gold bought in 2011 didn’t have much capital gains in the ensuing 8-year period. So was the case for gold bought in the 1980s until the mid-1990s. This lack of flexibility is not only true for selling, but also relevant in case of buying. When gold falls and becomes attractive, there may not be a SGB tranche available for one to invest. In such cases one may lose out on a lucrative entry point for gold. This is not the case with gold ETFs, where you can enter or exit at any point in time taking timely advantage of the price movements in gold to either build your exposure or book profits. Liquidity at fair prices: SGBs have an 8-year tenure with an exit option from 5th year onwards only. Tax benefits are only applicable if the bond is held till maturity, which limits liquidity in secondary markets. Thus, SGBs are usually seen trading at a discount on the exchanges. “So, if an investor wishes to sell the SGB before the 8-year maturity, he may be forced to sell the bond at a discount in the secondary market which would eat into investor’s returns,” says Jain. On the contrary, Gold ETFs offer high liquidity. These ETF units mirror the current market value of physical gold, enabling investors to trade them on the exchange throughout market hours at rates closely aligned with the market price. Consequently, Gold ETFs are viewed as a more effective and efficient addition to a portfolio. Basically, SGBs give investors an exposure to gold, but not in a physical form like gold bars or jewellery. The tenor of the SGB is eight years, however, if the investors want to withdraw the bond before this period, then the facility is available after the fifth year from the date of issue on coupon payment dates. Those who hold the bond in the demat account can trade it on National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE. Others can approach their agent, bank, post office or Stock Holding Corporation of India limited (SHCIL) office in case of premature redemption. On Thursday August 5, on the multi commodity exchange, gold futures were down moderately at ₹47,888 per 10 gram. In the last three months from May 3 to August 3, gold futures on MCX have gained 1.05% in rupee terms. Overall, SGBs are backed by the government and hence are considered to be safer for investment. However, commodity experts believe that going ahead gold will continue to gain in value. “A stronger US Dollar ahead of key US economic data due later in the week might continue to weigh on gold prices; however, rising cases of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is expected to keep the demand for the safe haven elevated,” said Prathamesh Mallya, assistant vice president of research, non-agri commodities and currencies at broking firm Angel Broking. When the dollar gains value ⁠— all other factors remaining the same ⁠— the international price of gold, pegged in dollar terms, falls. “Right now there is enough liquidity in the market to sell every <keyword id="1508043" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-bond">gold bond</keyword>. So there is no point selling it prematurely. RBI’s Sovereign Gold Bonds scheme opens today —  price, how to apply, and more

New Delhi, Jun 22 () State Bank of India (SBI) has mobilised 13,212 kg of household and institutional gold through the Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS), according to the state-owned bank's annual report. It added that the country's largest lender collected as much as 3,973 kg of gold during 2019-20 under the GMS, a programme launched by the government to utilise gold lying idle with individuals as well as trusts. "During FY2020, (the) bank mobilised gold amounting to 3,973 kgs, bringing the cumulative mobilisation to 13,212 kgs," said SBI in the report. The government launched the GMS in November 2015 to mobilise idle gold held by households and institutions. The objective of the scheme was to facilitate use of idle gold for productive purposes, and also reduce the country's dependence on imports. The bank further said that during 2019-20, it mobilised 647 kg (Rs 243.91 crore) through sovereign gold bonds (SGB), thus taking the total gold mobilised since inception of the scheme to 5,098 kg (Rs 1,561 crore). The SGB scheme was introduced by the government during 2015-16 to promote digital gold instead of physical gold for investment purposes. As a primary player in the field of bullion banking, the bank has been making available metal gold loan to jewellers engaged in manufacturing of gold ornaments for the domestic and export purposes. During 2019-20, the bank extended metal gold loan to jewellers to the extent of 22,255 kg and sold 2,522 kg of gold under the 'Sale of Gold' scheme to jewellers and traders. NKD CS HRS

Mumbai, Apr 17 () The issue price for the Sovereign Gold Bond has been fixed at Rs 4,639 per gram of the yellow metal, the Reserve Bank said in a statement on Friday. The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2020-21-Series I will be opened for subscription from April 20 to 24, 2020. Earlier this week, the central bank had said the government will issue Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) in six tranches beginning April 20 till September. Sovereign Gold Bond 2020-21 will be issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on behalf of the government. "The nominal value of the bond based on the simple average closing price [published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA)] for gold of 999 purity of the last three business days of the week preceding the subscription period...works out to Rs 4,639 per gram of gold," the RBI said. It further said the government has also decided to offer a discount of Rs 50 per gram to those investors applying online and where payment against the application is made through digital mode. For such investors, the issue price of bond will be Rs 4,589 per gram of gold. The bonds will be denominated in multiples of gram(s) of gold with a basic unit of 1 gram and the tenor of the SGB will be eight years with exit option after fifth year to be exercised on the interest payment dates. The bonds are restricted for sale to resident individuals, HUFs, trusts, universities and charitable institutions. The minimum permissible investment will be 1 gram of gold and the maximum limit of subscription shall be 4 Kg for individuals, 4 Kg for HUFs and 20 Kg for trusts and similar entities per fiscal (April-March). The gold bond will be sold through banks (except small finance banks and payment banks), Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), designated post offices, and recognised stock exchanges (NSE and BSE).
