<br /> These demands have come in a joint press conference released by leaders from All India Students' Association (<keyword id="202881" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aisa">AISA</keyword>) of CPI(ML), All India Students Federation (<keyword id="340585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AISF">AISF</keyword>) of CPI, National Students' Union of India (<keyword id="6372948" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSUI">NSUI</keyword>) of Congress, Students Federation of India (<keyword id="6373398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFI">SFI</keyword>) of CPI(M) and Student Forum For Swaraj (<keyword id="951603" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFS">SFS</keyword>).<br />
<br /> They also denounced the assault on Left activists, JNU teachers, students and media that was done on February 15 in Patiala court. These attacks were cited as <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword> and BJP’s attempts to "spread a reign of terror against differing voices".<br />

"We condemn the anti-national slogans that were raised during the event but who did that is a matter of investigation. Let the inquiry takes it course. Do not character assassinate the entire university by branding it as anti-national," SFI general secretary Vikram Singh said.<br />

"If the entire University is anti-national, then its alumini including Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, CBI Director Anil Sinha and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman are also anti-national," NSUI leader Kumar Raja said.<br />
<br />
"Slogans cannot be used as an excuse to crackdown on JNU. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of JNUSU President Kanhaiya and the immediate withdrawal of false charges on all JNU students," they said in a joint statement.<br />

The "ongoing assault on JNU is part of a long process by the Modi government to destroy our best educational institutions," the released added. "We are seeing a pattern wherein the Modi government actively intervenes to shove the RSS-BJP agenda down the throats" of the insitutions," they claimed.<br />

Student unions asks people to wait for the inquiry results before assassinating JNU’s character

<p class="drop-cap">My last conversation with Cormac McCarthy, the acclaimed and elusive novelist who died last week at 89, came as unexpectedly as the first. </p><p>Over six decades of winning every major literary award, including the Pulitzer Prize, McCarthy gave notoriously few interviews. But beginning in 2005, much to my amazement, he had several with me — initially for Wired, and later for Rolling Stone. Belying his hermitic and ornery reputation, Cormac proved a spry talker, deeply knowledgeable, acidly funny, and infinitely curious. Especially about his favorite subject, science. </p><p>It was a scientist, in fact, who introduced me to McCarthy. I was interviewing Lisa Randall, a theoretical physicist at Harvard, when she mentioned that the world-famous author of the best-selling Western "All the Pretty Horses" and the brutal masterpiece "Blood Meridian" had edited a draft of her book. I heard a needle scratch in my head.</p><p>"Sorry," I told her. "I thought you said Cormac McCarthy edited your book on theoretical physics?"</p><p>"I got the manuscript back in the mail, and it was marked up on every page," Randall told me. "He essentially copyedited it, getting rid of some of my semicolons, which he really didn't like."</p><p>From "No Country for Old Men" to particle physics — I didn't know what to make of the disconnect. I'd been reading McCarthy since college, when my father, Gil, had urged me to pick up "The Orchard Keeper," his first novel. The dark, taut Southern saga of murder, revenge, and fathers and sons had a deep relevance to both my dad and me. When I was 4 and living in backwoods Florida, my 11-year-old brother, Jon, left for the convenience store to get candy, and was kidnapped and murdered by two drifters, the sort of story that could have sprung from Cormac's pages. I admired how he could look so unsparingly into the darkness, and sear it on the page. </p><p>By the time I interviewed Randall, Cormac was spending his days at the Santa Fe Institute, a theoretical-research institute in the piñon foothills of New Mexico. After receiving a MacArthur "genius grant" in 1981 and meeting Murray Gell-Mann, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and cofounder of SFI, McCarthy had moved from Texas just to be close to the place. He preferred the company of scientists because they were exploring the fundamental questions of nature and complexity. "If it doesn't concern life or death," as he later told me, "it's not interesting."</p><p>I knew the risks of approaching McCarthy. My dad had told me a story he'd heard about a journalist who had supposedly shown up at McCarthy's house in hopes of doing an interview. "Don't do this to yourself," McCarthy told the guy, before shutting the door in his face. Nevertheless, I figured it was worth asking Randall whether McCarthy might speak with me for the story I was doing about her. A little later, she called me back to say — to her shock and mine — that he was happy to do her the favor. Then she gave me his number, and said to call him in fifteen.</p><p>While I waited, I called my dad, who was duly floored to hear the news. Cormac and I ended up speaking for hours. Wry and engaged, he had plenty to say about cosmology, violent video games, and how a vole's trail can lead to its own demise. "Their trails are mostly composed of urine, but there are other substances as well," he told me in his Tennessee drawl. "One absorbs ultraviolet light, which is invisible to us. But guess who can see it? The raptors flying overhead. They have ultraviolet vision. You think about these birds — they're not looking for voles, they're looking for ultraviolet trails through the weeds."</p><p>The more I spoke with McCarthy, the more he sounded like a scientist rather than a novelist. Whenever the subject of writing came up, he'd often turn it back to physics, his major before he dropped out of college. "In physics," he said, "to figure out how things are, you really have to think about how things might be. You have to have a childlike mind, like Einstein thinking about: What would happen if I was suddenly projected at the speed of light — what would I see?" He seemed like a little boy turning over rocks in a stream, just to see what was underneath. When I asked what fascinated him about science, he said simply, "It's interesting to know how the world works."</p><p>Cormac invited me to visit him at SFI to help promote the work of the institute. SFI researchers were pioneering the cross-disciplinary study of the complex and hidden systems that underlie everything from terrorist cells to climate change. Cormac considered them intellectual "outlaws," as he put it. "They're not academics, they're not trying to cover their ass."</p><p>I spent several days milling around SFI's hilltop adobe retreat with McCarthy and an ensemble of ecologists, biologists, and anthropologists like my dad. One afternoon, while Cormac and I were in SFI's small kitchen loading up on enchiladas and beans, he started talking about extinction. A friend of his there, the paleobiologist Doug Erwin, had written a book about it, and McCarthy had grown fascinated by the Cretaceous-Tertiary meteorite that destroyed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. On a trip to El Paso to visit his son, he imagined fires engulfing the horizon. He decided to turn the image into his next book, which he described to me as a "post-apocalyptic story of a father and son." </p><p>"What's it called?" I asked. </p><p>He took a forkful of rice. "The Road," he replied.</p><p>After my story came out in Rolling Stone, McCarthy and I continued to talk from time to time. He became a mentor to me, offering up advice on writing and publishing. "You know what writing is?" he asked once. "Writing is rewriting." Another time, when I asked whether he worked from outlines, he demurred. "If you're writing a novel, the best things just sort of come out of the blue," he said. "It's pretty much a subconscious process — you don't really know what you're doing most of the time." When I got up the nerve to send him a draft of a story I was working on, he proved a gracious but exacting editor, stripping my work of the commas he used so economically in his own writing.</p><p>Eventually, we fell out of touch. Which was why, a few months ago, it was such a pleasant surprise to hear from him. At first he seemed confused, even though he was the one who had called me. "Maybe it's my phone," he said, "but you sound different." We soon sorted out that he hadn't meant to call me. He'd meant to dial David Krakauer, the director of SFI, but had hit my name instead. "You got the next David in the alphabet," I joked.</p><p>Then we spent a few minutes catching up. I congratulated him on his two new novels, "The Passenger" and "Stella Maris," which teem with his wonder for science. I reminded him that when we first met, he told me he was working on five novels at once. (Which, according to my math, means there are still another three in the vault.) He told me he was looking forward to a visit with his family, and that he still hung out at SFI when he could. </p><p>As he spoke, I heard something in his voice I hadn't heard before — age. I'd lost my father by then, and wanted to thank Cormac for the both of us. I told him what a personal and professional thrill it had been to meet him and get to know him and write about him. He'd helped inspire me to write my family's own story of life and death, "Alligator Candy," and for that, I was grateful. I didn't realize it would be our goodbye. </p><p>One night long ago, during my visit at SFI, the writer known for confronting mortality so bluntly in his fiction spoke of his own. We were attending a lecture on climate change, and Cormac was sitting down front in blue jeans and cowboy boots alongside the biologists, physicists, and other brainiac outlaws he considered his close friends. "Eventually, you start to realize that you aren't going to be around for very long," he told me as we prepared to listen to the latest research on how the world might end. "Find work you like and find someone to live with you like. Specifically, the multinational technology company is investing $100 million in modern technology for HBCUs, along with $50 million to help lessen student debt for HBCU students.</p><p>"Their expertise and generosity will ensure that HBCUs are secure and robust institutions that empower Black students," Robert F. Smith, Chairman of SFI, said in a statement. "And Cisco's added financial commitment to students, making them the first anchor corporate partner of SFI, will help liberate students from crushing debt and allow them to make their own life choices."</p><p>SFI's press release added that Cisco's $50 million investment is the first step to helping SFI reach its goal of a $450 million endowment supporting 4,500 students in perpetuity.</p><p>To help students financially at HBCUs and MSIs, the Student Freedom Initiative offers an "income-contingent funding option" for education costs, meaning that in exchange for funding, students agree to make payments to SFI based on what they earn after leaving college.</p><p>According to its website, the program, called the <a href="https://studentfreedominitiative.org/student-freedom-agreement/">Student Freedom Agreement</a>, is available to cover a student's remaining costs after federal aid is taken into account, and it could serve as an alternative to private student loans. Funding for each student is capped at $20,000 a year, and there is no obligation to pay back the full amount of funding received. </p><p>Cisco's $50 million will go toward this program, ensuring students do not have to borrow more student debt than they can pay off.</p><p>Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-debt-cancelation-biden-civil-rights-organizations-loan-borrowers-2021-4">reported</a> last month that Black borrowers typically owe 50% more student debt than white borrowers, and four years later, Black borrowers owe 100% more. That's why 36 civil rights organizations called on President Joe <keyword id="60973" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Biden">Biden</keyword> to cancel $50,000 in student debt per borrower to help close racial disparities that have put those borrowers "on the brink of financial devastation."</p><p>"Student debt cancellation will help Black and brown borrowers build wealth and enable our <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> to move forward as millions of Americans are able to start families, buy homes, and set up small businesses," the organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), said. </p><p>Biden has not yet committed to canceling $50,000 in student debt - he is having the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-wants-to-cancel-student-loan-debt-ron-klain-says-2021-4">Education</a> and <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2021/02/17/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-and-deputy-national-security-advisor-for-cyber-and-emerging-technology-anne-neuberger-february-17-2021/">Justice</a> Departments review his authority to do so - but in his $4 trillion infrastructure proposal, he did include a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-infrastructure-plan-education-free-community-college-universal-prek-families-2021-4">$39 billion program</a> that provides two years of subsidized tuition for those earning less than $125,000 enrolled in a four-year HBCU or <keyword id="6392170" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="msi">MSI</keyword>.</p><p>SFI is planning to launch its programs in the fall, and Cisco's investment is critical in furthering the initiative's goal of ensuring success for students at HBCUs and MSIs.</p><p>"This partnership is an investment in our future workforce, empowering AA/Black STEM students and equipping them with the financial and technology tools to be resilient and successful long term," Maria Martinez, Cisco's chief operating officer, said in a statement. "We remain committed to this community - to be seen, heard, valued, and invested in."</p>

While just about everybody has offered an opinion on the matter, one of the few people we haven't heard from is Kaepernick himself.</p><p>Kaepernick's silence may have changed just a tad on Tuesday when he posted the definition of "Stockholm Syndrome" on his Twitter account, a move that many felt was a response to - and possibly a shot at - Michael Vick.</p><p>On Monday, Vick was a guest on FS1's "Speak for Yourself," when he was asked about his own experience of trying to rehab his image and get back into the NFL after a stint in prison. Vick started by saying the first thing Kaepernick needs to do is "cut his hair" and "<span>just try to be presentable."</span></p><p><span>While Kaepernick's Twitter timeline is typically filled with retweets, on Tuesday he issued just his second direct tweet since the Fourth of July.</span></p><p><span>The tweet certainly fits in with the social injustice themes often seen in Kaepernick's social media and could just be a bigger-picture message about not drinking the Kool-Aid from those in positions of power or authority. However, the timing is certainly curious, coming so soon after the controversial comments from Vick, suggesting Kap was comparing Vick to the Stockholm hostages.</span></p><p><span>Here are Vick's full comments:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"First thing we've got to get Colin to do is cut his hair," Vick said. Previously, the digital versions of the books were only available on author J.K. Rowling's fan site, Pottermore.</p><p>To top it off, they include several enhancements. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>The billing practices of the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital are under fire after a <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/1/7/18137967/er-bills-zuckerberg-san-francisco-general-hospital">Vox article detailed how some privately insured patients</a> have been surprised to receive a bill as high as five figures.</li><li>The public hospital was named after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, after the couple made a $75 million donation in 2015 to build a trauma center.&#xa0;</li><li>Some people are now criticizing Zuckerberg himself on social media, despite the fact that he has no impact on the day-to-day operations of the hospital.</li></ul><p>People are criticizing Mark Zuckerberg for the billing practices of a San Francisco-based hospital named after him that has reportedly left some privately insured patients with five-figure debts.</p><p>Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, formerly called San Francisco General Hospital, was named after the Facebook founder in 2015 after he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, made a $75 million donation. However, Zuckerberg himself has no impact on the day-to-day operations, though it is largely associated with his likeness.</p><p>Emergency room bills <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/1/7/18137967/er-bills-zuckerberg-san-francisco-general-hospital">reviewed by Vox</a> detailed how the hospital is considered "out-of-network" for those with private insurance. <span>This means it doesn't accept the kind of health-insurance coverage that most people get through their jobs, which can leave people with large bills if they visit the hospital for care - for example, one woman ended up with a $31,250 bill for a broken ankle.</span></p><p>On social media, some people have been criticizing the Facebook founder for the hotel's policies, showing just how sticky it can be to have a hospital with your name on it.&#xa0;</p><p>But the crucial context is that Zuckerberg is not currently involved in implementing policy at the hospital. The public hospital, in its own words, is there to serve those who are "underserved" by only accepting public health coverage (i.e. Medicaid, Medicare, and all the programs that fall underneath), according to the Vox report.&#xa0;</p><p>Yes, "the less sexy reality," as one Googler put it, is far more nuanced. But with his name front and center on the hospital, the Facebook CEO has found himself in this position before. Take for example just last month, when a San Francisco politician asked the city attorney <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-supervisor-aaron-peskin-remove-zuckerberg-name-general-hospital-2018-11">to remove Zuckerberg's name</a> from the hospital amid Facebook's latest privacy scandal.</p><p>Though, the fact remains: denying all private insurance is quite rare and, frankly, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/10/29/18018098/hassan-emergency-room-bill">frowned upon</a> by many healthcare advocates.</p><p>The Vox report examines how when someone is involved in a traumatic accident near Zuckerberg Hospital, they are most likely going to be taken there - potentially without recollection or the ability to search for an in-network provider - making it more likely they will be surprised when the bill comes in the mail.</p><p>It's a valid concern, and some politicians are already looking into how to combat these "surprise" ER bills, but that's a different discussion than as to whether Zuckerberg is to blame for patient experiences at the hospital he donated to.</p><p>And finally, in case the answer to that sarcastic question wasn't clear -&#xa0; no, Zuckerberg doesn't control what gets billed and how much.</p><p>Sarah Kliff, writer of the Vox piece, explains in her reporting how she found the city of San Francisco, or more pointedly, the city's Board of Supervisors, <a href="https://twitter.com/sarahkliff/status/1082360904350658560">is the one setting the prices</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;</p><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div>

Is it fair to criticize Mark Zuckerberg for the controversial billing practices of the San Francisco hospital named after him?

<p>In an <a href="https://www.osc.state.ny.us/press/releases/jan13/010713.htm">analysis of the state's debt burden</a>, DiNapoli projects the state will have just <span>$509 million of borrowing capacity by the end of SFY 2013-14.</span></p>
<p>Albany enacted a <keyword id="648838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="debt-ceiling">debt ceiling</keyword> in 2000, at 4 percent of New York State Personal Income.</p>
<p><span>New York’s state-funded <keyword id="44647" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="debt">debt</keyword> totaled $63.3 billion this year. DiNapoli says </span>weak economic conditions have reduced personal income growth, which in turn has driven down available borrowing capacity.</p>
<p>DiNapoli proposes raising all state-funded debt to 5 percent of personal income, with a nine-year phase-in of the cap and a constitutional amendment to restrict the use of long-term debt to capital purposes.</p>
