 India needs a whopping $2.64 trillion investment to meet all of the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs). This provides an investment opportunity of over $1.12 trillion to the private sector by 2030. "India represents $1.124 trillion of SDG opportunity, or more than 10% of the $9.668 trillion opportunity for private sector investors across all emerging markets to help achieve the UN goals," the report said. The Opportunity 2030 study spans 15 of the world's fastest-growing economies and estimates the potential private-sector investment opportunity to contribute to three of the most investment-ready SDGs . The study identified opportunities for the private sector to contribute to three infrastructure-focused goals between now and 2030 - clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and industry, innovation and infrastructure.

It will cost India $701 billion to provide electricity access to 7% of its population

<ul><li>India is going to fulfill the <keyword id="879547" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-development-goals">sustainable development goals</keyword> before 2030. </li><li>The government claims to have reduced maternal and infant mortality rates, and under-five mortality rate, said the minister without giving any figures. </li><li>However, some of Javedkar’s claims conflict with one of a report released by the Indian government earlier this year. </li><li>In July 2019, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India released a report highlighting the gaps in achieving the key objectives of the 2030 Agenda. </li></ul> Environment minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> today said that India will achieve its health-related sustainability goals well in advance. “We are happy to announce that the goals set for 2030 will be achieved much earlier,” <a href="https://twitter.com/PIB_India">said the minister.</a> The goal is to keep maternal mortality rate to less than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births. As per the target, under- 5 mortality should go down to 25 deaths per 1000 live births, <a href="https://data.unicef.org/topic/child-survival/child-survival-sdgs/">according to the UN. And infant mortality rate should go down to zero by 2030. </a> A release by Press Information Bureau also said that mortality of infants, mothers and children under-five is declining. “At the current rate of decline, India should able to reach its <keyword id="620876" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SDG">SDG</keyword> target (MMR-70, U5MR-25) much before the due year i.e. 2030,”<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1587494"> said the release. </a> These claims come two months after Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised doubts that India may fall short in health-related sustainable goals. This is primarily due to inadequate spending on primary healthcare infrastructure. It also cited lack of data to track the progress of SDG as one of the reasons. <a href="http://www.censusindia.gov.in/vital_statistics/SRS_Bulletins/MMR%20Bulletin-2014-16.pdf">According to the Census</a> in 2017, as many as 130 women died per 100,000 live births. Infant mortality and under-five mortality rate was at 33 and 39 deaths per 1,000 live births. As per CAG, spending on healthcare itself is lower than what is budgeted for. It pointed out a massive gap in proposed budget and allocated budget into sprucing up India’s healthcare. The National Health Mission was allocation 13.6% less in 2018-19 than the proposed budget,<a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/india-unlikely-to-meet-health-related-sustainable-development-goals-says-govt-auditor/"> reported India spend. </a> The states are not spending enough either. As per National Health Policy 2017’s recommendations, states should spend 8% of their budgets by 2020. As many as seven states spent anywhere between 3.29% and 5.32% between 2012-2017. Overall, India spends a mere <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-spends-just-1-2-of-its-gdp-on-healthcare-but-a-policy-can-change-that/articleshow/64665303.cms">1.2% of its GDP on healthcare.</a> It ranks lower than Singapore, which itself is known for its low spending on public health.

In the case of the US, it ran afoul of guidelines because it hasn't ratified several treaties such as those involving women's rights and certain kinds of weapons, Bloomberg said.For its part, the US was ranked 38th in the world in the <a href="https://www.equalmeasures2030.org/2022-sdg-gender-index/rankings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 SDG Gender Index</a>, which tracks the empowerment of women and girls.Meanwhile, the US hasn't ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. And then-President Donald Trump said in 2019 that the US had "unsigned" the Arms Trade Treaty.Trump also withdrew the US from the Paris climate agreement, but the US rejoined it when President Joe Biden took office.Arnim Emrich, the head of Baden-Württemberg's treasury and asset management unit, acknowledged to Bloomberg that banning certain investments based on international treaties is "kind of a blunt approach.""But it's the only proxy we have that is simple and objective," Emrich added.Baden-Württemberg isn't the first German state to adopt similar ESG laws. Schleswig-Holstein already has a law that bans US Treasurys. But Germany is unlikely to have much impact on the US bond market. Overall German holdings of Treasurys total $85 billion compared to the $24 trillion Treasury market.

AAHL is leading the Adani portfolio's foray into B2C infrastructure assets. AAHL business is centred around convenience to consumer both via physical and digital channels. "The first phase of our capital management plan is now set in motion with the funding of AAHL, MIAL and NMIAL, and we will now focus on scaling up the airports business into one of the largest airport platforms globally. Earlier this week, MIAL placed $750 million private placement to Apollo, and $1.74 billion financial closure for NMIAL from the domestic banking system. AAHL is now geared for the next phase of its capital management plan which includes tapping the public capital markets and further construction facilities to enable access to long term capital sources for infrastructure development. Adani Airports secures $250 million ECB funding for airport development

Almost 4 lakh diarrhoeal disease deaths can be averted if '<keyword id="7834202" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jal-jeevan-mission" source="Orion">Jal Jeevan Mission</keyword>' meets its target of providing clean water to all rural households, according to a new study by the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>. The government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in 2019, a nationwide programme that aims to provide all houses in rural areas with safe and adequate drinking water through individual tap connections by next year. The <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) was requested by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to conduct a study to assess potential health gains and associated cost savings due to increased access in safely-managed drinking water services in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. The study found that, on an estimate, if the Jal Jeevan Mission provided safely-managed drinking water to all of India, this would result in averting almost 4 lakh deaths caused by diarrhoeal disease. According to official figures, till now 62 per cent rural households have been provided with tap water connection. "With universal coverage of safely-managed drinking water in India, almost 14 million DALYS (Disability adjusted life years) from the diarrhoeal disease are estimated to be averted, resulting in estimated cost savings of up to USD 101 billion," the study said. Also, the study said that providing a tap connection to every household would result in significant time saved on water collection (66.6 million hours each day), especially among women. Presenting the research findings, Richard Johnston, co-lead of WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene, said if the world achieves its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets of drinking water and sanitation, it will be because of India. "There are two reasons for it -- population and size -- as India is the country with the largest population in the world so what happens in India is important for the world but it is also because India is demonstrating what can be done and what is possible when it makes commitments and investments," he said. Dr Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the <keyword id="6364555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-council-of-medical-research" source="Orion">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword>, said these findings are plausible. "We must understand that these are gross underestimates of the total benefits of providing safe water not only because these benefits go beyond health and they affect many communicable and non-communicable diseases. And even malnutrition, which is a big issue for us as they are all also related to water, so we must consider these just modest assumptions and tip of the iceberg," Bahl said. WHO estimation of health impacts is based on comparative risk assessment (CRA) methods, which are used extensively in the burden of disease assessments (Ezzati 2002, Pruss-Ustun 2019). The analysis estimated potential health gains from the Mission by comparing two scenarios. The JJM scenario assumed that coverage of safely managed drinking water services in India increases linearly from baseline levels to 100 per cent coverage at the end of the programme, whereas, the business-as-usual scenario assumed improvements in coverage rates are in line with historical annual rates of 0.5 percentage points change per year. For the economic analysis, the value per DALY averted from the JJM initiative was based on an approach described in the 2001 report of the WHO's Commission on Macroeconomics and Health which assigned each life year a value of three times the GDP per capita. Harawa said the organization educates community organizations, businesses, and individuals on managing and repairing water points to ensure long-term viability and provides assistance in maintaining the water infrastructure and education along the way."We let them understand where their water is coming from, that water is a finite resource that must be taken care of," Harawa said, adding that citizens are also educated on how to reuse water to grow crops and plant trees.Harawa counts her work in Blantyre among her biggest accomplishments. She was instrumental in bolstering the <a href="https://www.bwb.mw/">Blantyre Water Board</a> and helping establish 10 water users associations that manage 1,000 communal water kiosks in the city.Across Malawi, she also led a team that built more than 360 water kiosks and created a sanitation business chain to offer long-lasting sanitation services in Blantyre.In 2021, Water for People's program costs in Malawi totaled <a href="https://www.waterforpeople.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Water-For-People-2020-Consolidated-Financial-Statements.pdf">more than $4.1 million</a>, according to the organization. This involves reaching <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal6">several targets by 2030</a>, including expanding safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene access, reducing water pollution, and restoring water-related ecosystems.The country is now a step closer, she added, after Water for People was involved with developing a resilient financing strategy for the water sector. Harawa was instrumental in the drafting process."We provided technical assistance to the government of Malawi with funding from UNICEF to develop a climate-resilient WASH financing strategy. The strategy identified the WASH finance gap and identified three ways of closing the gap," Harawa said. The government has accepted the plan, but it hasn't yet been adopted, as it's awaiting the minister's signature.While she's not sure of the exact timeline, Harawa believes once the strategy is implemented, Malawi will meet the SDG 6 initiative."If we do business as usual, then we're not going to meet it," Harawa said. "But if we change the way we approach things and do things better, then we will be able to achieve SDG 6 in Malawi."
