It noted that the general elections to the Lok Sabha are to be held on May 7 and 13 and no exam has been scheduled for May 6 and May 12. Altering the examination date would disrupt the extensive arrangements already in place for the conduct of the examination and it could result in "grave injustice for some students", it said. The scheduling of exams pertains to "policy decisions", it said while refusing to entertain the PIL. "But weighing the importance of the right to vote we have examined the position of candidates who shall be appearing for exams and would also need to vote. 591 centres are there and no exams on polling dates. At this stage when 4 lakh plus students have enrolled, any relief at this stage would result in grave prejudice," the CJI said. The Chartered Accountancy (CA) exams are scheduled to start from May 2 and continue till May 17. The plea sought that the exams scheduled for May 8 and May 14 be postponed to other dates as elections are going to be held in some states on May 7 and May 13. The Delhi High Court, on April 8, has refused to postpone the <keyword id="21424300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CA-exams" source="keywords">CA exams</keyword> while dealing with another plea. The high court had said it was surprised that such a request was made before it and termed the petition as "bereft of substance". The counsel representing the ICAI had submitted that rescheduling the exam in the second week of June would throw the exercise into disarray and added that due care has been taken to ensure that no exams are scheduled on the dates when polling will be held. SC refuses to plea seeking postponement of CA exams scheduled in May

The Centre on Thursday told the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> that the decision to give <keyword id="21375140" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grace-marks" source="keywords">grace marks</keyword> to 1,563 <keyword id="20055256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET-UG" source="keywords">NEET-UG</keyword>, 2024 candidates for admission to <keyword id="19968296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MBBS" source="keywords">MBBS</keyword>, <keyword id="20007002" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BDS" source="keywords">BDS</keyword> and others courses has been cancelled and they will be given an option to take a re-test on June 23. A vacation bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was told by the counsel for the Centre and the <keyword id="19904021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Testing Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Testing Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) that the students, who were given grace marks, will be given an option to take the re-test. The court said it will not stay the counselling process for admissions. If the candidates, out of the 1,563, do not wish to take up the retest then their earlier marks, sans the grace marks, will be given for the purposes of the results. The results of the re-test will be declared on June 30 and the counselling for admission in the MBBS, BDS, other courses will start on July 6, the Centre said. Taking note of the submissions, the bench said all the pleas, including the one filed by Alakh Pandey, the chief executive of EdTech firm Physics Wallah over the issue of award of grace marks, will be taken up for hearing on July 8. They also include the petitions seeking cancellation of NEET-UG, 2024 on account of allegation of question paper leaks and other malpractices. The examination was held by the NTA on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates took it. The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4, apparently because the evaluation of the answer sheets got completed earlier. The allegations such as question paper leak and the grant of grace marks to over 1,500 medical aspirants have led to protests and filing of cases in seven high courts as also the Supreme Court. As many as 67 students scored a perfect 720, unprecedented in the NTA's history, with six from a centre in Haryana's Faridabad figuring in the list, raising suspicions about irregularities. Scores of students protested in Delhi on June 10 seeking a probe into alleged irregularities. It has been alleged that grace marks contributed to 67 students sharing the top rank. The NEET-UG examination is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country. As per reports, 10 students accepted offers that fell within this range. These figures are more common in sectors such as education and design, where entry-level salaries tend to be modest compared to other fields. <h2>IIT Bombay 2024 placements: Number of students who got jobs </h2>Out of the 2,414 students who registered for placements, 1,475 students secured job offers, bringing the placement rate to 74.53%. The placement drive saw participation from 364 companies, with 1,650 job offers being made. These offers were largely made after the completion of summer internships, highlighting the importance of these internships in securing full-time positions. <h2>Comparison of the number of students placed in the last four years</h2>IIT Bombay has seen lesser student placement numbers over when compared to last year. However, when we look at the last four years, the numbers have been stable. In the 2020-2021 season, 1,150 students were placed, which rose to 1,441 in 2021-2022. The peak was reached in 2022-2023 with 1,516 placements, while this year saw a slight decrease to 1,475. This slight dip from last year’s record high can be attributed to the challenging global economic conditions. <h2>Number of offers from different programs</h2>Different academic programs at IIT Bombay saw varying levels of placement success. The B.Tech program led the way with 683 placements, followed by the M.Tech program with 415 placements. IIT Bombay 2024 placements: Lowest salary drops to Rs 4 LPA, 22 students get Rs 1 crore package

Around two lakh students from the Scheduled Caste category dropped out of college due to non-payment of dues under a scholarship scheme worth around Rs 2,000 crore by the <keyword id="6354953" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="punjab" source="Orion">Punjab</keyword> government, the <keyword id="516560" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-commission-for-scheduled-caste" source="Orion">National Commission for Scheduled Caste</keyword> said on Wednesday. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant <keyword id="19116" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mann" source="Orion">Mann</keyword> last week ordered a comprehensive probe into alleged irregularities in the post-matric scholarship scheme that had surfaced during the previous <keyword id="1575" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> regime in the state. NCSC chairperson Vijay <keyword id="6391235" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sampla" source="Orion">Sampla</keyword> told reporters that the Commission has sought an explanation from the state government on why the money has not been paid to colleges despite the payment of dues by the Centre. "We have taken suo motu cognisance in the matter. There have been many complaints from <keyword id="104433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SC-students" source="Orion">SC students</keyword> that they are not being allowed in colleges as the government has not paid their fees. "There were around three lakh SC students who benefited from the scheme in 2017 and the number dropped to 1-1.25 lakh in 2020. When we asked the state government, they said these children dropped out," he said. Sampla said that a meeting was held on Monday between <keyword id="112438" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="social-justice" source="Orion">Social Justice</keyword> and Empowerment ministry and Punjab government to discuss the matter. "In the meeting, it came to light that no dues from the Centre are there while the state government has to pay dues worth Rs 2000 crore to pay to these colleges. 2 lakh college students in Punjab drop out due to non-payment of scholarships, says constitutional body

The <keyword id="6356172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> is considering the option of reimbursing fees of students who would have benefited with <keyword id="6389157" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="maratha">Maratha</keyword> reservation in admissions to medical colleges, state minister Amit Deshmukh said on Monday. Deshmukh, who is the state medical education minister, said his department will move a proposal in this regard before the state cabinet. The Supreme Court in September this year stayed the implementation of <keyword id="1643654" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maratha-quota">Maratha quota</keyword> in jobs and education and referred the matter to a larger bench. The Maharashtra government later filed an application before a larger bench of the SC, seeking vacation of the stay on implementation of the quota. The state government is thinking of how students who have been affected by the Supreme Court's interim stay on implementation of Maratha quota can be given relief in admissions to medical education, Deshmukh told a TV channel. Asked if the government will reimburse their fees, he said, "...this (reimbursing fees) could be an option and the proposal will be moved before the cabinet by the medical education department." "Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ji will take a final call on the same after the cabinet discusses it," he said. Deshmukh also said the Maha Vikas Aghadi government -- comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress -- is committed to ensure that Maratha community students do not suffer. The Supreme Court in September stayed the implementation of 2018 Maharashtra law granting reservation to Marathas in education and jobs, but made it clear that the status of those who have availed of the benefits will not be disturbed. The Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018 was enacted to grant reservation to people of Maratha community in Maharashtra in jobs and admissions. The Bombay High Court, while upholding the law in June last year, held that 16 per cent reservation was not justifiable, and said quota should not exceed 12 per cent in employment and 13 per cent in admissions.

The top court asked CBSE and UGC to work in tandem to ensure that the careers of two lakh students giving the compartment exams, from September 22 to 29, are not jeopardized. During the hearing, the top court earlier asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) not to declare the academic calendar till September 24 but was later told that the calendar has been released. Taking a serious view of the release of academic calendar, the top court sought explanation from the UGC, to be given on Thursday, and directed that it be placed on record. "At what time and which date it was released, you will have to show this," the bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna said. "Don't give us vague dates. Give us the date and time when it was released. Whether it was after the order, before the order or when the matter was being heard. We will examine that," it added. The bench posted the matter on September 24 and asked both CBSE and UGC to coordinate to accommodate around two lakh students giving the compartment examinations. At the outset, <keyword id="9913577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-advocate-vivek-tankha">senior advocate Vivek Tankha</keyword>, appearing for one of the petitioners, said that CBSE compartment exams have commenced today and will continue up to September 29 and nearly two lakh students will appear in the compartment exams. Tankha said that UGC is also here and the CBSE should come out with the results at the earliest. "The UGC has to give us (students appearing in compartment exams) a chance to take admissions in universities," he said. Tankha argued that CBSE has to declare results early and UGC has to give us a chance of taking admission in colleges otherwise our one year will be lost. The bench asked Tankha that without CBSE declaring the results how can UGC accommodate the students. The senior lawyer contended that after the results are declared, UGC can give the students a chance to take admissions in colleges as the students are appearing in the exams during the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword> times. The bench asked UGC that because of peculiar situation is it possible for the commission to have some route open for accommodating these students who are appearing in compartment exams. To this, the counsel for UGC said that it can be done, if the seats are vacant but he will have to take instructions. The bench then told the counsel to take instructions and see whether these issues can be taken care of by the commission while asking when UGC intends to keep its cut-off date for admission. The counsel replied that he has to take instruction but it may be October end. Counsel for CBSE argued that there are 1,248 exam centres and answer sheets have to be brought to the regional centres. The top court said that these are not normal times but exceptional times and CBSE has to take steps as the career of two lakh students is too big. The counsel for CBSE replied that it will take 3-4 weeks (for declaration of results of compartment exam). The top court told the CBSE that it has to come out with some date so that UGC can take further steps and observed, "If you (CBSE) will not have the date, then UGC will have difficulty". When counsel for UGC said that it may have cut off date of October end, the bench said, "It could be the first week of November also". He said that UGC has already finalised the academic calendar and was about to release it. The bench asked UGC to not release it till Thursday and would hear the matter on that day to know about the views of CBSE. "Both of you coordinate and have a cut off date so that the other one can comply with it. This is only to accommodate these two lakh students. Two lakh is not a small number. Now the situation is beyond anyone's comprehension," the bench said. The bench observed that CBSE has to work in tandem with the UGC and it should be left to them on how to work it out. When one of the counsels told the bench that they have given a chart of dates given by colleges, the bench said, "We are not going to give directions to individual colleges". After the matter was over, the UGC's counsel mentioned the matter and told the bench that the academic calendar has already been released and the admission process has to be completed by October 31. "We will have it on Thursday. You explain this on that day," the bench said, adding, "You also place it on record." The counsel for UGC said, "I am sorry, I was misinformed about it". The bench said, "That's okay but it has to be explained how this miscommunication happened". On September 10, the top court said that the CBSE would not be able to help much the students taking compartment exams for class XII this month as it would be the colleges and universities which will take their admissions for higher studies. During the Supreme Court hearing, CBSE provided an affidavit stating that the average marks obtained in the best performing subjects will be considered while calculating the result for those exams that stand cancelled now. The board confirmed that the results will be declared by July 15, 2020. How will the marks be calculated? Students are now worried about how will the board decide the final percentage of marks — something they will depend upon for college applications and more. According to CBSE’s affidavit, those students who have completed all their exams will be marked based on their scores in those subjects. It will be the average marks scored in those subjects. “For students who have appeared in exams for more than three subjects, the average of the marks obtained in the best three performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted,” the CBSE circular <a href="https://twitter.com/barandbench/status/1276381053834461185?s=20">said</a>. Similarly, if the students have appeared for only three subjects, the average marks of the best two subjects will be the marks allotted to the remaining subjects. For instance, if you scored 90 marks in english, 70 in mathematics and 85 in biology, then the marks awarded to the remaining subjects (whose examinations have not been conducted) will be 87.5 — that is the average of the marks obtained in english and biology. The bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna, said this after Tankha argued that the CBSE may ask the colleges to give provisional admissions or wait till results are declared for compartment exams. Tankha said that compartment exams are scheduled from September 22 to 29 and by that time, admissions for various undergraduate courses would be over. He said students taking compartment exams would not get admissions in colleges and their whole year would be wasted. The senior advocate argued that the CBSE could not hold main exams due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to declare results based on some "hybrid systems of evaluation" and due to this, many students are facing compartment exams "In the interest of students, who are almost five lakhs, taking compartment exams, something must be done," he said. The bench observed that compartment exams are being conducted "perhaps three times in a year". The top court said around 87,000 students have failed and the solution does not lie with the CBSE. During the hearing conducted through video-conferencing, Tankha said the Centre and states could be served with the copy of petition through standing counsel and attempts could be made to find an acceptable solution for such students. "Don't complicate it otherwise it will not come up for hearing," the bench said. The apex court later asked the petitioners to serve the copy of the plea to the Centre and posted the matter for hearing on September 14. On September 4, the CBSE had opposed in the top court a plea and said all "necessary" safety measures for students are being taken in view of COVID-19 pandemic. The CBSE's counsel had said that board has increased the number of examination centres for compartment tests from 575 to 1,278. "We have taken a decision that in a class where 40 students could sit, now only 12 will sit and we are taking all precautions," the counsel for CBSE had said, adding that all necessary measures are being taken. The apex court had asked the CBSE to file a short affidavit in response of the plea of Anika Samvedi and others. CBSE won't be able to help students taking class XII compartment exams says SC

The students then mailed to the varsity website their answer sheets and got an auto-generated response. </li><li>Pankaj Garg, a professor of Rajdhani College, said that the <keyword id="9732288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="main-problem">main problem</keyword> that students faced was in uploading the answer sheets. </li></ul> <keyword id="6360099" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university">Delhi University</keyword>'s online open book examinations for final-year undergraduate courses began on Monday with many students complaining about receiving two <keyword id="76676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Question-papers">question papers</keyword> and difficulty in uploading answer sheets. The exams began at 7.30 am and are being held in three shifts. Zubair Khan, a student of School of Open Learning (SOL), said, "I had my Hindi exam today according to the date-sheet. When I opened the portal for downloading my question paper, I found that two question papers were uploaded -- one of Hindi and another of the paper scheduled for August 13. I sent mails to the SOL but there was no response. I consulted a professor who advised me to attempt the paper scheduled for today." Another student, Deepak Gupta, said he was not sure if he could successfully upload his answer sheets before the scheduled time of 11.30 am. "It was 11.28 am by the time I finished creating PDF files (of my answer sheets). I tried to upload them but they didn't get uploaded. I have mailed them to the designated ID but do not know whether they will be accepted," he added. A student of B.Sc Physical Science, who did not wish to be identified, said that the paper was quite tough and in a situation, when classes could not happen properly, it was unjust for students. "They faced problems in uploading PDF files and some of the students said that if they could upload answers to two questions, they could not upload the answers to the third. They were not sure whether their answer sheets were uploaded. The college received answer sheets on email post 11.30 am, which was the scheduled time," he said. Garg also said that teachers will face issues while evaluating answer sheets. "There is a fair possibility that there would be swapping of the pages while scanning and uploading, this would disturb the sequence.... Teachers have to be very very careful in connecting all those pages which belongs to the same question," he added. While scanning some pages may be blurred and it would be difficult to read them carefully and it would be more difficult to connect to the next page and hence the continuity of the answer would be lost, he added. For teachers, the most challenging point would be marking of pages, it seems that evaluation would take much longer, he stressed. The exams have been postponed several times.
