Shares of state-owned behemoth Life Insurance Corporation (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) have outperformed rivals like <keyword id="20079495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Life" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Life" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Life">HDFC Life</keyword> and <keyword id="21278696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential-Life" source="keywords">ICICI Prudential Life</keyword>, as it placed bets on India's growth sectors, including infrastructure, while the private sector concentrated its bets on tech, consumer and consumer-related <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword> companies. LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. In contrast, HDFC Life gave a negative return with Tuesday's closing price of Rs 646.55 on the BSE as compared to Rs 666.55 a year back. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

The life insurer had posted a net profit of Rs 777 crore in the year-ago quarter. <keyword id="20840570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-income" source="keywords">Total income</keyword> during January-March FY24 rose to Rs 37,567 crore from Rs 22,805 crore in the same period of FY23, <keyword id="19906098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi-life" source="keywords">SBI Life</keyword> said in a regulatory filing. Net premium income in Q4FY24 stood at Rs 25,116 crore as against Rs 19,897 crore in the year-ago period. For the full year 2023-24, the company's net profit grew 10 per cent to Rs 1,890 crore from Rs 1,720 crore in the previous year. Total income during the year rose to Rs 1,32,631 crore from Rs 81,598 crore a year ago. SBI Life said it registered a growth of 9 per cent in the value of new business (VoNB) to Rs 5,550 crore in FY24. VoNB is the present value of expected future earnings from new policies written during a specified period. It reflects the additional value expected to be generated through the writing of new policies during a specified period. Assets under management (AUM) grew 27 per cent to Rs 3.8 lakh crore as of March 31, 2024, it said. Solvency ratio declined to 196 per cent from 215 per cent in the previous fiscal. Solvency margin represents the additional capital that an insurer must maintain to cover potential claims beyond their expected liabilities. This serves as a financial safety net, ensuring their ability to settle all claims even in the most challenging circumstances. SBI Life Q4 profit rises 4% to ₹811 crore

Recently, <keyword id="472962" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-life" source="Orion">HDFC Life</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=exide&amp;sortorder=score">acquired </a>Exide Life to strengthen its operations while ICICI Lombard General Insurance has received final nod to acquire Bharti AXA General. So, mergers and acquisitions will be a crucial part of the growth journey as there are many insurance companies with less than 1% market share. There are a total 14 life insurance companies and 13 non-life insurance companies with a market share less than 1%, according to a report by ICICI Securities. In the listed space, SBI Life and ICICI Life have performed well with 36% and 43% returns in 2021, so far, respectively. New Delhi, Reliance Capital's (RCAP) expression of interest (EOI) for asset monetisation garnered mega response with 60 bids being received. <keyword id="13222" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword> Life and Apollo are among the 10 new bidders who have submitted expressions of interest for Reliance Capital's assets, taking the total number of bids to 60. December 1 was earlier the deadline for the submission of EOIs. Over 60 different bids have been received with SBI Capital Markets Limited and JM Financial Services Limited, the advisors to the lenders. Later the date for submitting the bids was extended to December 17. Over eight bidders have bid for entire RCAP assets on an as-is-where-is basis. The prominent among them are Oaktree, J.C. Flower and multiple ARCs. For Reliance General Insurance, which is owned 100% by RCAP, there are 18 bidders and prominent among them are, Chryscap, J.C. Flower, Blackstone, KKR, CVC Capital Partners, and Bain Capital. For Reliance Nippon Life Insurance, in which RCAP owns 51% controlling stake, has received 16 bids, including Bain Capital, NIIF, Arpwood Partners, Dabur Investments, Bandhan Bank, and <keyword id="884924" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multiples-Asset-Management">Multiples Asset Management</keyword> among others. For Reliance Securities, there are eight bidders, including Bain Capital, Religare Broking, Edelweiss Securities and other ARCs. For Reliance ARC, there are six bidders, including Bain Capital, International Asset Reconstruction Company and other ARCs. For Reliance Health, there are eight bidders - Blackstone, Bain Capital, Arpwood Partners, and other ARCs. There are also multiple bidders for RCAP's stake in ICEX and Paytm E-commerce business. Reliance Capital asset monetization process, to unlock value of its underlying businesses and to make RCAP debt free, was launched on October 31, 2020. The monetization process being run under the aegis of Committee of Debenture Holders and <keyword id="10477607" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-debenture-trustee-vistra-itcl-india-ltd">the Debenture Trustee Vistra ITCL India Ltd</keyword> - which represents 93% of total outstanding debt of Reliance Capital. EOIs were invited for all or part of RCL's stake in the following key subsidiaries and assets individually or in any combination thereof. This includes 100% stake in Reliance General Insurance Company Limited (RGI). It has a paid up capital of Reliance General Insurance is ₹252 crore as of September 30, 2020. It is the 4th largest <keyword id="10477608" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-general-insurance-company">Private General Insurance Company</keyword> with market share of 4.5% as of March 2020 in the General Insurance category. It has shown consistent growth in AUM Year-on-Year with investment book of ₹12,315 crore as on September 30, 2020. The company performed its best even during COVID times with Gross Direct Premium Income of ₹4,501 crore during the first six months of FY20- 21. It has a strong distribution network of 134 branches with amongst largest agency force of 46,742 as of September 30, 2020 across the country. Bids have been invited for 51% stake in <keyword id="10203731" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-nippon-life-insurance-company-limited">Reliance Nippon Life Insurance Company Limited</keyword> (RNLI). The paid up capital of Reliance Nippon Life Insurance is ₹1196 Cr. as of September 30, 2020. RNLI is a joint Venture with Japan's largest life insurer - Nippon Life which holds 49 % shareholding. It is the 10th largest <keyword id="10203730" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-sector-insurer">Private Sector Insurer</keyword> (in terms of Individual WRP) and amongst largest Non-Banca company with a network of 717 offices. It witnessed sharp turnaround in performance during FY19-20 with a profit after tax of ₹35 crore and 75% growth (12% CAGR) in embedded value over last four years. It has an impressive claim settlement ratio of 98.1% in FY19-20 and a higher Solvency ratio of 207% (as against regulatory requirement of 150%). As on September 30, 2020, the AUM was ₹21,912 crore and an individual premium market share of 2.20% amongst private insurers. Bids have been invited for 100% stake in Reliance Securities Limited - Broking &amp; distribution company offering services across asset classes including equities, commodities, derivatives, currency, mutual funds, bonds and corporate FDs. Also on offer is a 100% stake in Reliance Financial Limited - RBI registered NBFC, engaged in the business of financing, money lending, capital market linked financing activities, 49% stake in Reliance Asset Reconstruction Limited which manages portfolio of ₹1,996 crore as on September 30, 2020. A 20% stake in Indian Commodity Exchange is also being bid. Other key shareholders in ICEX are Central Warehousing Corporation, MMTC Limited, Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, Indian Potash Limited and Bajaj Holdings and Investments. ICEX is a SEBI regulated commodity derivatives exchange. There is also 100% stake in Reliance Health Insurance Limited. Other PE investments like Naffa Innovations Private Limited, Paytm E-Commerce Private Limited. RCL's key businesses and subsidiaries are performing well and business will continue as usual. The management, professional team, customer and partners will be unaffected by the proposed asset monetisation programme of RCAP. Reliance Capital asset sale: SBI Life and Apollo join the race, nearly 70 bids received so far

<keyword id="12760343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highways-Infra-Trust" source="Orion">National Highways Infra Trust</keyword> (<keyword id="49448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NHAI" source="Orion">NHAI</keyword> InvIT), the infrastructure investment trust sponsored by <keyword id="83263" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highway-Authority-of-India" source="Orion">National Highway Authority of India</keyword> (NHAI) to support the Central government's <keyword id="11929270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Monetization-Pipeline" source="Orion">National Monetization Pipeline</keyword>, has raised a sum of ₹1,430 crore from domestic and international investors through placement of its units, for part funding its acquisition of three additional road projects from NHAI. The placement of units with institutional investors, witnessed strong demand from both existing investors, who reposed their commitment by participating in the process, as well as new investors. The units have been subscribed by a gamut of institutional investors including Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, State Bank of India, SBI Pension Fund, SBI Mutual Fund, IOCL Employee Provident Fund, L&amp;T Staff Provident Fund, Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Karamchari Pension Fund, TATA AIG and <keyword id="5050251" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="star-union-daiichi-life-insurance" source="Orion">Star Union Daiichi Life Insurance</keyword>. NHAI subscribed to the units through preferential allotment to maintain its unitholding of at least 15 per cent. The units were subscribed through a book build process at Rs 109 per unit, at a premium over floor price of Rs 107.12 per unit. In addition to the above, NHAI InvIT has also filed a prospectus with SEBI for issuance of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) to raise Rs 1,500 crore. The NCDs would carry a coupon of 7.90 per cent payable semi-annually and would be available for subscription by both retail and institutional investors.
