<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Courtesy of IntuitIntuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Sasan Goodarzi stepped up as CEO of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/intuit">Intuit</a> - the company behind products like Intuit and TurboTax - in January, replacing 11-year chief exec Brad Smith. </li><li>Smith gets a ton of credit from parties inside and outside Intuit for helping the company successfully navigate to a largely cloud-based, subscription-based software model. </li><li>To prepare to replace such a prominent figure, Goodarzi spent much of last year shadowing leaders like NFL legend Steve Young and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/satya-nadella">Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella</a>, trying to glean their wisdom for how to be a strong leader. </li><li>Now, Goodarzi says, his biggest challenge will be helping Intuit become an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ai">artificial intelligence</a>company, the same way that Smith led Intuit <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/cloud-computing">to become a cloud company. </a></li><li>Intuit has already begun working AI in to many of its products - and says that it's on the roadmap to make TurboTax a totally free product that uses AI to match users up with pre-vetted offers for credit cards, loans, and other financial products.</li></ul>Sasan Goodarzi has some big shoes to fill, three months or so into his reign as CEO of $66.5 billion Intuit.His predecessor<a href="http://fortune.com/2018/08/23/intuit-ceo-brad-smith-departs/">, Brad Smith, successfully shepherded Intuit into the cloud computing era </a>during an 11-year tenure, delivering huge growth in the subscription-based online versions of Intuit's flagship TurboTax and QuickBooks products. Smith's success endeared him to Wall Street, which propelled shares of Intuit to all-time highs. Goodarzi knows he inherited a good situation. But he also sees something on the horizon that could be as difficult, and potentially as lucrative, as anything faced by Smith. To Goodarzi's mind, he told Business Insider earlier this month, the rise of artificial intelligence represents a big opportunity for a company like Intuit - including the chance to adopt a new business model. He foresees a future where users don't pay for many of Intuit's products, and the company instead makes money on products like TurboTax by presenting customers with fine-tuned, personalized offers for other financial services. But Goodarzi says that even that potentially huge shakeup to its business model is secondary to the broader implications of applying artificial intelligence to the world of personal and business finance, where livelihoods literally hang in the balance.Goodarzi says that there's a lot of societal upside here: Already, Intuit is using AI to vet applicants for small-business loans. Applicants who would have been rejected by more established lenders are now getting approved thanks to the technology, he says. And the borrower default rate is lower.But there are lots of potential hazards and pitfalls, too. "It's actually a cultural change that we have to go through internally to understand the impact of artificial intelligence," Goodarzi said. "Right now, I would say that for the first time in a very long time, the technology can do things that our employees don't yet understand what it's capable of." We spoke with Goodarzi about how he prepared himself to take over from such a distinguished predecessor, and his philosophy on running a company as it faces the unprecedented challenge ahead. <h2>Shadow boxing</h2>Last August, it was announced that Smith would be stepping down as CEO, with Goodarzi on deck to replace him. Goodarzi had been with Intuit for about 14 years at the time of the announcement, including stints as the leader of both TurboTax and QuickBooks, so he was no stranger to the company. Still, he wanted to prepare. "It's an enormous gift to step into this role having been with the company for 15 years," says Goodarzi. "But there's a shadow, and the shadow is that you make assumptions that you know everything about the company."And so, Goodarzi spent some time with about a dozen CEOs and other leaders he admires, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, and even NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young. He shadowed them in their daily duties, asking questions and getting their perspectives on the world of business. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">REUTERS/Staff PhotographerFormer NFL quarterback Steve Young took over for the legendary Joe Montana - much in the same way that Sasan Goodarzi had to take over Intuit from Brad Smith.</div></div></div>From Nadella, he learned that a CEO has a truly unique perspective: The CEO knows more about the day-to-day operations of the company than the board of directors; and the CEO knows more about the inner workings of the board than anyone involved in the company's day-to-day operations. Nadella's advice, then, was to always keep this "asymmetry" in mind, and consider those perspectives when you run into disagreement on one side or another. Butterfield's advice was simple, says Goodarzi: "Best product wins." Being a CEO is complicated, and requires a leader to pick up a lot of new skills. But if the product isn't any good, it's all for naught, says Goodarzi. He went to Young for a different perspective. In the same way that Goodarzi was preparing to replace Brad Smith, Steve Young had replaced the legendary Joe Montana as the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. Young's advice to Goodarzi on following such a tough act: "Be yourself, don't be Brad." In January, Goodarzi kicked things off with a series of meetings and events with Intuit's 9,000 employees around the globe. Now, a few months later, Goodarzi is settling in for the long haul.<h2>Rethinking everything</h2>The thing that makes Goodarzi's "heart beat fastest" - the very reason why Intuit exists - is the idea that technology can help people be more prosperous, he says. Artificial intelligence is a powerful lever to making that happen, says Goodarzi, and the company is working hard to integrate it into its products. As with cloud computing, AI is forcing Intuit to rethink and reorganize its approach to products, even its most successful products. It's early yet, Goodarzi says, but there are already signs of how AI is shaking up Intuit's business."We're gonna have to reimagine ourselves and not be afraid to disrupt ourselves once again," Goodarzi says. Goodarzi says that for TurboTax, its popular tax filing tool, this is most dramatically manifesting in the transition to an "AI-driven expert platform." The idea is that TurboTax's algorithms will work in concert with human financial experts: When the system finds a tax question it can't answer, it connects you with its network of CPAs and tax attorneys. He doesn't see TurboTax, then, as a replacement for humans, but rather a new way of interacting with them.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Courtesy of IntuitTurboTax connects users with real human experts to answer tricky tax questions.</div></div></div>"[Customers] actually want to talk to an expert, a human being, to get their questions answered, and so in essence what we are focused on is connecting experts with those that we serve on our platform and fundamentally digitizing the entire service industry - which, by the way, lags behind the technology industry," Goodarzi says. More futuristically, Goodarzi praises recent Intuit efforts like QuickBooks Assistant, a voice assistant that lets small business users sift their data and turn up information on accounts payable and received.He also says that he's proud of QuickBooks Capital, which weighs the creditworthiness of small business applicants - its algorithm looks at non-traditional factors to help candidates who might otherwise have trouble getting a loan, either because of their background or their lack of a strong credit history."We're able to crunch billions of data using decision engines and artificial intelligence to give you a loan that nobody else would give you," Goodarzi says. <h2>Away from 'user-paid'</h2>Looking forward, Goodarzi says that there's a huge opportunity to use AI to make products like TurboTax free to users. Rather than pay up front, you might give your consent (Goodarzi says that consent is an important part) to have Intuit analyze your data to match you up with a vetted selection of financial products from partners that might include Roth IRAs and credit card offers. <a href="https://turbo.intuit.com/">Turbo</a>, a new, free Intuit personal finance product, does some of this already.While everybody likes getting things for free, this plan might raise some eyebrows - <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/03/07/when-tax-prep-is-free-you-may-be-paying-with-your-privacy/?utm_term=.a2f4287e53da">Geoffrey A. Fowler of the Wall Street Journal recently called Credit Karma Tax</a>, a similar AI-powered product to what Goodarzi is proposing for TurboTax, a "bold grab for personal data" that's "taking a business idea that hasn't worked out well for us with Facebook and applying it to even more sensitive information."Goodarzi acknowledges that AI has its downsides, and that constant vigilance is required to guard against unwanted outcomes. He says that the company's algorithms include data from 26 billion sources, helping the company work to average out the kinds of bias that can sometimes pop up in AI systems. Still, he says, the company's engineers are always on the lookout to make sure that the systems are working for, not against, its users."For the first time in a very long time that technology can do things that our employees don't yet understand that it's capable of," Goodarzi says. Ultimately, it's important to learn from both the good and the bad, he says, and Intuit has to be willing to change its approach as results come pouring in, he says. Since February 24, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy has led his people through one of the biggest land invasions in recent memory. And he hasn't lost. He's inspired <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ordinary-ukrainians-take-up-arms-defend-kyiv-from-russia-2022-2">thousands of civilians to fight for freedom</a>, welcomed <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-recruiting-foreign-fighters/31737766.html">emboldened foreigners</a> who've joined his ranks, and led an international campaign to garner monetary and military support. Time magazine named Zelenskyy its "Person of the Year" for 2022, in part, because of the courage he showed in leading his country. "Zelensky's success as a wartime leader has relied on the fact that courage is contagious. It spread through Ukraine's political <keyword id="11893566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="leadership" source="Orion">leadership</keyword> in the first days of the invasion, as everyone realized the President had stuck around. If that seems like a natural thing for a leader to do in a crisis, consider historical precedent," Time's Simon Shuster <a href="https://time.com/person-of-the-year-2022-volodymyr-zelensky/">wrote in the profile</a>.Since February 24, the leader has waged an impressive defense against Russia and Vladmir Putin, who has ruthlessly targeted Ukraine's infrastructure for months, leaving many without heat or water as the nation moves further into winterZelenskyy continues to show fearlessness, making frequent visits to troops and civilians who've lost their homes. On Tuesday, he<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63881095"> spent time with troops in the eastern Donetsk region</a>, around the town of Bakhmut, which is now a focus in the war. Zelenskyy's words, continue to inspire his fellow Ukrainians and others. "You can temporarily occupy the territory of our state. But you definitely cannot occupy the Ukrainian people," Zelenskyy said in September at a visit to the recaptured city of Izyum in northeast Ukraine. His resilience is just one of several effective leadership traits the Ukrainian chief possesses, according to business consultants who focus on management.And while leading a country is certainly different from leading a company, there are similarities. Like presidents, <keyword id="11915157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ceos" source="Orion">CEOs</keyword> are responsible for overseeing and taking care of people. Many oversee budgets that are comparable to, or even larger than,<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/25-giant-companies-that-earn-more-than-entire-countries-2018-7"> some countries' gross domestic product</a>, its total economic output. CEOs are responsible for delivering on certain goals, are in the public eye, and are increasingly being asked to make decisions on global issues like the climate crisis and discrimination.Throughout the war, which began in February with Russia's invasion of its neighbor, Zelenskyy — often dressed in camo-green T-shirts and zip-up sweaters — has been visible. He's posted videos from the streets of Kyiv, his country's capital, and repeated clear messages in media interviews. He's given emotional speeches to world politicians, spoke virtually at the Grammy Awards in April, and more recently, pleaded for more support at the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-63632161">G20 summit in Bali</a> in November. "Russia wants war. It's true. But Russia will not be able to stop the course of history," he said, declaring that "mankind and the international law are stronger," in a virtual speech to the <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/watch-live-ukrainian-president-zelenskyy-addresses-the-2022-united-nations-general-assembly">2022 United Nations General Assembly</a> in September. Zelenskyy represents a new era of crisis leadership, according to professors of international relations and business. CEOs have the opportunity to learn from him."History will look highly favorably upon Zelenskyy," William B. Eimicke, a professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, said. "Good leaders recognize that they're only as good as the people who follow them. And they are, in fact, a personification of the team of the organization, of the company they represent. You're talking about people who are under great stress, people who are evacuating, people who lost their homes, who lost their businesses," she said. That's all I wanted to tell you. Glory to Ukraine."Zelenskyy teaches us that effective messaging is clear and concise. We see this in the business world, too. In <a href="https://www.nestle.com/media/news/covid-19-ceo-message-to-employees">a memo</a> Nestle CEO Mark Schneider sent out during a peak in the pandemic in 2020, he outlined three clear points he wanted employees to take away. Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi's <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=624db40d7860f167482ded4e&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fpulse%2Ftime-stand-together-sasan-goodarzi%2F">2020 memo</a> after the murder of George Floyd was written in plain language. Indeed, the most successful memos after Floyd's murder invited difficult conversations, outlined concrete plans, and appealed to emotion, public-relations experts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/corporate-responses-to-george-floyd-death-analysis-racism-diversity-inclusion-2020-6">told Insider</a>.<h2>Lead from the front lines </h2><div type="image" title="Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivering a video address" height="939" width="1820" msid="90708103" hostid="261"></div>Zelenskyy had an opportunity to escape hardship when President Joe Biden offered to help him leave Ukraine as Russia began its assault. But the Ukrainian leader stayed.Experts likened the decision to a CEO deciding to go to the scene of a disaster or crisis, rather than hunkering down in their office or at home. A 2021 research paper published in the <a href="https://journals.aom.org/doi/10.5465/amj.2018.0706">Academy of Management Journal</a> found business leaders who led by example boosted productivity in their businesses."Zelenskyy put himself in the forefront, despite the fact that the ultimate cost in his case could be his own life," said <a href="https://www.bu.edu/pardeeschool/profile/vesko-garcevic/">Vesko Garčević</a>, a Boston University professor who previously served as the ambassador of Montenegro in Brussels for NATO. "He doesn't hide behind the thick walls of the presidential palace or humiliates his subordinates in front of cameras to show his power."The most effective leaders don't lead crises from boardrooms or corner offices, <a href="https://www.gram.edu/academics/majors/pro-grad-studies/mass-comm/faculty/">Ceeon D. Quiett Smith</a>, a professor of communications at Grambling State University, said. "President Zelenskyy understands that the people — children, families, men, and women — are Ukraine and that freedom is the heart of Ukraine," she said. This garners support. A significant number of Ukrainian <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/03/19/1087712539/ukrainian-women-are-volunteering-to-fight-and-history-shows-they-always-have">women</a> are refusing to leave, per government orders, and are taking up arms instead. And international volunteers, including <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/russia-ukraine-invasion-battle-us-military-veterans-volunteer-rcna19697">American veterans</a>, are traveling to Ukraine to help in the fight."Zelenskyy shows that CEOs and other leaders should not shy away from emotion when it is warranted," Griffin, who was the White House strategic-communications director for President Donald Trump, said.Some of the most convincing business leaders of our time have leaned into emotion when making key arguments. Think of Steve Jobs, a cofounder and former CEO of Apple, when he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnrJzXM7a6o">unveiled the first iPhone</a>. He spoke about unleashing the future and the power of technology. Consider <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/corporate/story/indra-nooyi-writes-emotional-letter-to-staff-after-stepping-down-as-pepsico-ceo-152207-2018-10-11">PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi</a>, when she announced she was stepping down from her post. She described a "surge of emotions" and made employees feel connected to the brand she was leaving.Emotion is a cunning rhetorical device to connect with audiences and drive buy-in for one's goal, <a href="http://people.umass.edu/jra/studiesofemotion/articles/creativity/RhetoricofEmotion.pdf">scholars</a> and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6002292/">researchers</a> said.<h2>Dress the part</h2><div type="image" title="Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy." height="853" width="1280" msid="90708107" hostid="261"></div>Though the pandemic has bent the rules of formality, starched suits are still the go-to for world leaders. In April, the Ukrainian leader also <a href="https://egyptindependent.com/zelensky-removes-two-top-ukrainian-generals-says-he-does-not-have-time-to-deal-with-all-the-traitors/">removed</a> several top generals, calling them "anti-heroes.""Now, I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually, they will all be punished," <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/international/3256034-zelensky-two-ukrainian-generals-dismissed-for-being-traitors/">he said</a> in a speech."Every CEO has one core assignment," Derrick Anderson, assistant professor of public affairs at Arizona State University, said. "President Zelenskyy remains focused on his core assignment. He has already demonstrated a commitment to prioritize loyalty and is starting to move key leaders in and out of critical roles." Zelenskyy is also unafraid of taking nontraditional media opportunities to make his plea for support. His somber, serious plea during the Grammy Awards in April was in stark contrast to the event's tradition of being celebratory, but the president knew many people were watching and seized the opportunity. The president prompted a standing ovation, more news coverage, and a wave of tweets.

"Endometriosis doesn't mean you can't get pregnant on your own, however, it can increase your chances of infertility.If you have <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-i-have-endometriosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endometriosis</a> and are interested in starting a family, here are some helpful steps you and your partner can take. <h2>What is endometriosis? </h2>Let's start with the basics. Endometriosis is when <a href="https://academic.oup.com/humrep/article/20/10/2698/603564" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endometrial-like tissue</a>, also known as implants, grows outside of the uterus resulting in chronic inflammation, scar tissue, and adhesions. "Endometriosis is a highly variant disorder from mild to severe presentation," says <a href="https://kindbody.com/team/dr-fahimeh-sasan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fahimeh Sasan, MD, founding physician and OB-GYN of Kindbody</a>. "Depending on the severity of the disease and extent of pelvic and abdominal organ involvement, the level of pain will vary from woman to woman." It's also important to note that the amount of pain one feels does not necessarily correlate to the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/endometriosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354656" target="_blank" rel="noopener">severity of the condition</a>. Here are the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK536053/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four stages of endometriosis</a> that describe the severity of a patient's condition: <ul><li>Stage I endometriosis. Stage I endometriosis is considered "minimal". During this stage, implants are small, shallow, and few in number. </li><li>Stage II endometriosis. Stage II endometriosis is considered "mild". During this stage, doctors may find more implants that are deeper than the implants found in Stage I patients. </li><li>Stage III endometriosis. Stage III endometriosis is considered "moderate". During this stage, patients may experience a combination of deep implants and endometrial cysts on one ovary. Stage III patients may also have filmy adhesions or thin bands of tissue that have bound their organs together. </li><li>Stage IV endometriosis. Stage IV endometriosis is considered "severe". During this stage, patients will have deep implants, large cysts, and several dense adhesions throughout their pelvic region. </li></ul>Endometriosis is persistent and can cause the tissue to grow where it doesn't belong, including the intestines, rectum, and bladder. The most <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/endometriosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">common sites of endometriosis</a> include: <ul><li>Ovaries </li><li>Fallopian tubes </li><li>Ligaments that support the uterus </li><li>Posterior cul-de-sac (i.e. the space between the uterus and the rectum)</li><li>Anterior cul-de-sac (i.e. the space between the uterus and the bladder)</li><li>The lining of the pelvic cavity </li></ul>Because every woman's body is different, not every person will experience the same symptoms. In fact, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2941592/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20%-25% of women with endometriosis are asymptomatic</a>. Some of the common <a href="https://www.womenshealth.gov/a-z-topics/endometriosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">symptoms of endometriosis</a> include:<ul><li>Debilitating pain in the lower back or abdomen </li><li>Abnormal or heavy menstrual flow </li><li>Pain during intercourse </li><li>Pain with urination during menstrual periods </li><li>Pain with bowel movements during menstrual periods </li><li><a href="https://www.drseckin.com/endometriosis-sciatic-region" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leg pain</a> </li><li>Chronic fatigue </li><li>Gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation, diarrhea, and nausea </li></ul><h2>Can you get pregnant with endometriosis? </h2>Endometriosis is considered <a href="http://www.idph.state.il.us/about/womenshealth/factsheets/endo.htm#:~:text=Does%20endometriosis%20make%20you%20infertile,women%20with%20endometriosis%20are%20infertile." target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of the three major causes of female infertility</a> — even so, it's not impossible for a woman with endometriosis to get pregnant. "It's definitely possible to get pregnant with endometriosis," says <a href="https://www.greenwichivf.com/blog/doctors/barry-r-witt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barry Witt, MD, Director of WINFertility and Greenwich Fertility &amp; IVF Center</a>. "Some will conceive with no problem, while others will require treatment in order to conceive." <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-get-pregnant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Natural pregnancy</a> occurs when an egg travels from the ovary, past the fallopian tube, and to the uterus for fertilization before <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-does-implantation-occur#:~:text=Getty,day%2025%20of%20your%20cycle." target="_blank" rel="noopener">implanting</a> into the uterine lining. How endometriosis affects fertility is unclear, but researchers believe that scar tissue has a lot to do with it."Some severe cases of endometriosis result in significant scarring around the ovaries and fallopian tubes — this can either block the tubes or make it difficult for them to function normally," Witt tells Insider. "Multiple surgeries for endometriosis can be associated with scarring and can affect ovarian function."Endometriosis can also damage a woman's egg or a man's sperm, ultimately preventing <keyword id="6357793" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pregnancy">pregnancy</keyword>. Laparoscopy is the only way to <a href="https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/endometri/conditioninfo/diagnose#:~:text=Surgery%20is%20currently%20the%20only,slightly%20with%20a%20harmless%20gas." target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirm an endometriosis diagnosis</a>. Pregnancy can still occur, depending on the severity of endometriosis found at the time of laparoscopy. According to <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/obgyn/infertility-reproductive-surgery/endometriosis/endometriosis-and-fertility#:~:text=Endometriosis%20is%20associated%20with%20an,is%20linked%20to%20future%20fertility." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brigham Women's Hospital</a>, pregnancy rates may improve if Stage I or II endometriosis is removed surgically. "I was diagnosed with Stage IV Endometriosis and wound up losing both of my Fallopian tubes," says Melissa Randazzo, a mother of two who has endometriosis. "After two rounds of IVF, I was able to get pregnant with my first little miracle, Gaspare." She later gave birth to her daughter, Lucy. <h2>How to get pregnant with endometriosis </h2> If you have endometriosis and are interested in starting a family, it may help to speak with your endometriosis specialist or OB-GYN first. This is particularly true for women who have had multiple surgeries for endometriosis. "Women with endometriosis who are trying to conceive should see a reproductive endocrinologist," says Witt. "A fertility specialist can evaluate the woman's individual case based on her symptoms, ultrasound findings, age, and other fertility factors in order to determine the best course of treatment." A reproductive endocrinologist can also conduct blood tests, such as an anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) test. This test can help determine a patient's remaining egg supply or <a href="https://www.endofound.org/can-endometriosis-cause-diminished-ovarian-reserve" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ovarian reserve</a>.Endometriosis isn't a one-size-fits-all condition, but taking the time to speak with your doctor, limiting your intake of inflammatory foods, and engaging in moderate physical activity can improve your chances of natural conception. If after six months you and your partner are unsuccessful conceiving naturally, you may want to consider an endometriosis-related infertility treatment option, like the ones listed below.<h3>Superovulation and Intrauterine Insemination (SO-IUI)</h3>Superovulation and intrauterine insemination (SO-IUI) is a viable option for women who have normal fallopian tubes. SO-IUI is a two-step process that combines either injectable or oral fertility medication and sperm insemination. Once the patient's follicles are ready to ovulate, her partner will be asked to provide a fresh sperm sample to the doctor or clinic. This sample is then prepared, "washed," and <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/pregnancy/fertility-treatments/what-iui" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inserted into the woman's uterus</a> via a catheter. In some cases, this sample may be provided by a donor. <h3>In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) </h3>In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complex combination of procedures used to help with fertility. One <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/in-vitro-fertilization/about/pac-20384716" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IVF cycle</a> involves five steps: <ul><li>Ovarian stimulation. If using your own eggs, your doctor may recommend taking a variety of medications, including synthetic hormones to stimulate the ovaries, one or more medications to prevent premature ovulation, and progesterone supplements to prep the lining of the uterus for implantation. </li><li>Egg retrieval. To determine whether eggs are ready for retrieval, your doctor will perform a vaginal ultrasound and a blood test. Once cleared for retrieval, patients are sedated and given a transvaginal ultrasound. During the ultrasound, a thin needle is inserted into an ultrasound guide — this needle is inserted into the follicles to retrieve the eggs. The eggs are then removed from the follicles. Mature eggs are collected and placed in a nutritive liquid and incubated. </li><li>Sperm retrieval. If using your partner's sperm, he'll need to provide a semen sample via masturbation the morning of egg retrieval. Donor sperm can also be used. </li><li>Fertilization. Fertilization can happen in one of two ways: <a href="https://www.fertilityiq.com/ivf-in-vitro-fertilization/conventional-insemination-or-icsi#fertilization-with-conventional-insemination-vs-icsi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Conventional insemination</a> or <a href="https://americanpregnancy.org/infertility/intracytoplasmic-sperm-injection-70970" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intracytoplasmic sperm injection</a> (ICSI). During conventional insemination, healthy sperm and mature eggs are combined in a petri-dish and incubated overnight. ICSI involves injecting one single healthy sperm into each mature egg. </li><li>Embryo transfer. Two-to-five days following egg retrieval, you'll go through the embryo transfer process. During this procedure, the doctor will insert a catheter into the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterus. Using a syringe, the doctor places one or more embryos into the uterus. If successful, implantation will occur six-to-10 days following egg retrieval. </li></ul>"If there is tubal involvement, such as a blocked tube or scarring in the tube, the treatment typically recommended is IVF, because with IVF you can bypass the tubes completely," says <a href="https://weareuprooted.org/about-us/uprooted-team/https://weareuprooted.org/about-us/uprooted-team/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dori Gelfman</a>, RN, infertility specialist and Community Manager at <a href="https://www.fruitfulfertility.org/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fruitful Fertility</a>. "By retrieving the eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them, and placing them directly in the uterus, you have created a detour where the tubes are no longer needed." "Pregnancy may actually alleviate some of the symptoms experienced for patients with endometriosis," says Luk. "For approximately nine months, the patient may experience minimal pain related to the endometriosis."<h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Women with endometriosis can get pregnant, naturally or with the help of fertility treatments, depending on the severity of their condition, age, and overall health. Endometriosis is an intrusive, incurable, chronic illness. "Between the bloating, pain, and general malaise, completing normal tasks can be almost impossible." As a primer to the discussion you should be having with your doctor, there are several key changes you can make to your daily routine to <a href="https://www.insider.com/cholesterol-levels-by-age" target="_blank" rel="noopener">keep your cholesterol levels at a healthy range</a>.According to<a href="https://newyorkcardiac.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Steven Reisman</a>, MD, a cardiologist and director of the New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center, the best way to lower cholesterol is with lifestyle modifications through diet and exercise. <h2>Understanding "good" and "bad' cholesterol</h2>Cholesterol has a bad reputation, but the truth is it is <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/about-cholesterol" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an essential part of the body</a> that helps build hormones, make <a href="https://www.insider.com/vitamin-d-benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vitamin D</a>, and produce bile acids in the liver, which is crucial for digestion.In fact, according to the American Heart Association, <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/about-cholesterol" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs to function</a>. But cholesterol also enters the body through the animal-based foods you eat, like meat and full-dairy products.To get your levels under control, it's important to understand that cholesterol travels through the blood by substances called lipoproteins, and there are two main types:<ul><li>LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is known as "bad" cholesterol because when the body has too much LDL cholesterol, it can build up in your arteries and block the flow of blood, which increases your risk for heart disease or stroke.</li><li>HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is called "<a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-good-cholesterol" target="_blank" rel="noopener">good" cholesterol</a> because it helps transport LDL cholesterol to the liver, where it can be removed before it builds up in the arteries. The higher the level of HDL cholesterol, the lower the risk of heart disease. </li></ul>In general, what you're aiming for is the right HDL-to-LDL ratio. But it takes more than just watching the cholesterol content of the foods you eat. While one may think lowering cholesterol levels is all about prohibiting cholesterol-rich foods from your diet, <a href="http://heart.org/en/news/2018/05/01/new-federal-guidelines-may-lift-dietary-cholesterol-limits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that's only a small factor</a>. What's important to understand is foods that are high in cholesterol are also high in saturated and trans fats, and there is <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/prevention-and-treatment-of-high-cholesterol-hyperlipidemia/the-skinny-on-fats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growing evidence</a> that for most people, the types of fat you eat is just as important as cholesterol when considering HDL and LDL levels. In addition to making healthier <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> choices, you can lower your cholesterol levels by staying active and avoiding tobacco products. Here's a full breakdown of the diet and lifestyle changes worth considering.<h2>1. Limit saturated fats</h2>As mentioned, it's understood that foods that are high in cholesterol are <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/features/cholesterol-myths-facts/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">also high in saturated fats</a>. Most saturated fats come from animal fats and dairy products, including:<ul><li>Red meats like beef, lamb, and pork</li><li>Chicken skin</li><li>Whole-milk dairy foods like cheese, butter, and cream</li></ul>But you can also find them in other products like:<ul><li>Coconut oil and cocoa butter</li><li>Palm oil and palm kernel oil</li></ul>Saturated fats drive up "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, but they also boost "good" HDL cholesterol. Therefore, you don't necessarily need to eliminate saturated fats completely. Instead, foods with saturated fats should be eaten in moderation. <h2>2. Cut trans fats</h2>In general, trans fats are more harmful than saturated fats — so much so that <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/food-additives-petitions/trans-fat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the FDA is working to phase out trans fats from the US food supply</a>. While trans fat naturally occurs in certain meat and dairy products, they become harmful when they're artificially manufactured and found in partially hydrogenated oils. These oils are used in commercially fried foods and packaged goods.Trans fats are worse than saturated fats because not only do they raise "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, they actively reduce "good" HDL cholesterol levels. While the FDA has taken steps to eliminate trans fat from the production of processed foods, it's a good idea for anyone with high cholesterol to eliminate these foods from their diet. At the very least, check the <keyword id="52652" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="nutrition">nutrition</keyword> label on packaged goods for "partially hydrogenated oils".<h2>3. Replace saturated and trans fats with unsaturated fats</h2>Not all fats are bad. Once you limit your intake of saturated and trans fat, the next step is to eat foods that are considered heart-healthy, which includes foods that contain unsaturated fats. There are two kinds of unsaturated fats: monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. And when eaten in moderation, they both can help improve your cholesterol levels, especially when used in place of saturated and trans fats.<h3>The benefit of monounsaturated fats</h3>"Foods with monounsaturated fats are beneficial because they can decrease bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL)," says Reisman. Foods with monounsaturated fats include: <ul><li>Avocados </li><li>Nuts like almonds, cashews, and pecans </li><li>Cooking with canola, olive, or peanut oil </li></ul><h3>The benefit of polyunsaturated fats</h3>Including<a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/how-to-lower-your-cholesterol-without-drugs" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> polyunsaturated fats</a> may also reduce the risk of heart disease and help lower your LDL cholesterol, says Reisman. Look for foods that contain an important type of polyunsaturated fat — omega-3 fatty acids. These include: <ul><li>Walnuts </li><li>Sunflower seeds</li><li>Fish like salmon, herring, and tuna</li></ul><h2>4. Eat more foods high in soluble fiber</h2><a href="https://www.insider.com/fiber-benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiber can bring many benefits</a>, including promoting digestive <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> and regulating how the body absorbs fat and cholesterol. There are two types of fiber:<ul><li>Soluble fiber: This type of fiber dissolves in water and slows down digestion, and is mainly found in whole grains and oats, legumes (like beans and lentils), and some fruits and vegetables (like apples, pears and peas)</li><li>Insoluble fiber: This type of fiber does not dissolve in water and is also found in whole wheat flours, nuts, and vegetables like cauliflower and potatoes.</li></ul>According to Reisman, soluble fiber can help reduce LDL cholesterol. Soluble fibers soak up water and form a gel-like substance in the intestine, <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/cholesterol/art-20045192" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which help manage the absorption of dietary fat and cholesterol</a>. Over time, eating more fiber helps the body remove cholesterol instead of absorb it, lowering LDL cholesterol along the way.<h2>5. Exercise regularly</h2>A daily exercise routine has many benefits, including improving cholesterol levels.<a href="https://lipidworld.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1476-511X-2-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research</a> has found that regular exercise helps increase the amount of HDL cholesterol in your body, which prevents LDL cholesterol from building up in your bloodstream and blocking your arteries.As for optimal levels of exercise, aim for at least <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/reduce-cholesterol/art-20045935" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30 minutes</a> of aerobic activity five times each week — walking, biking, jogging, or exercise classes should do the trick.<h2>6. Stop smoking</h2>If you're a smoker, giving up the habit can also get your numbers under control. That's because <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/prevention-and-treatment-of-high-cholesterol-hyperlipidemia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smoking lowers "good" HDL cholesterol</a>.It's never too late to quit. A 2011<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3110741/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> study</a> published in the American Heart Journal found that the level of HDL "good" cholesterol can rise about 5%, or 2.4 mg/dL, within just six weeks after quitting smoking.<h2>7. Drink alcohol in moderation</h2>It's true that drinking alcohol in moderation can bring <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-does-alcohol-affect-the-heart" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heart-healthy benefits</a>. For example, <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating/eat-smart/nutrition-basics/alcohol-and-heart-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a> has found that a glass of wine (5 ounces) can raise HDL cholesterol levels. It should be noted, however, that the correlation is not strong enough to recommend drinking alcohol to those who do not drink. Too much alcohol, however, can increase LDL cholesterol levels. If you're worried about your cholesterol levels, you should follow <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/moderate-drinking.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the recommended limit</a>, which is one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. <h2>How long does it take to reduce cholesterol levels?</h2>Reisman says it takes at least three months to lower your cholesterol. <a href="https://www.sasanmassachi.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sasan Massachi</a>, MD, a primary care physician specializing in internal medicine, says that patients are typically advised to adopt a lifestyle modification program for three months, focusing on a healthier diet and regular exercise. This is followed up with cholesterol tests after three months to gauge results. "If patients reduce their cholesterol adequately and are not in any danger of cardiovascular diseases, and they commit to maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen, we have them follow up in three to six months for additional cholesterol tests," he says.Overall, how quickly you can reduce cholesterol will depend on your total cholesterol level, your family history, any pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, and the type of diet and exercise program. If your levels are already closer to a healthy range, and you don't have any pre-existing conditions, it may take less time. <h2>When a doctor will recommend medication </h2>"For some patients who don't respond well to lifestyle changes, it is necessary to take medication," says Massachi. This <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/features/cholesterol-myths-facts/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">may include</a> those with a family history of high cholesterol, and those who also have cardiovascular diseases or type 2 diabetes. In these cases, Massachi says taking cholesterol medication can lower your cholesterol levels, and also help manage other pre-existing conditions. Silicon Valley millionaires - Quantum computing 101 - A $16 billion drug flop

NEW DELHI: The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Wednesday cancelled 214 <keyword id="6356966" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Coal">coal</keyword> block allocations, giving the owners six months time to wind up their work. 
 A bench, headed by <keyword id="42759" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chief-Justice">Chief Justice</keyword> RM Lodha, saved only four blocks — one belonging to <keyword id="45179" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="NTPC">NTPC</keyword> and SAIL each and two allocated to Sasan ultra mega power projects — from being cancelled.
 The bench, also comprising justices Madan B Lokur and <keyword id="108280" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kurian-Joseph">Kurian Joseph</keyword>, granted six months breathing time to mining companies to wind up their operations in the coal blocks.
The saved four coal mines' allottes will pay government an additional levy of Rs 295 per tonne of coal extraction. 
 
The top court said it has given six months breathing time to functioning plants to arrange for coal from other sources. 
 
SC said government’s stand that it was prepared for cancellation of allocation as logical consequence of the court’s judgment declaring all allocations illegal and arbitrary helped it in arriving at a decision quickly on fate of coal blocks.

The bench also directed the companies, which were allocated coal blocks but had not operationalized them, to pay a compensation to the government for the loss of exchequer. It accepted the findings of the CAG which came to the conclusion that the loss of Rs 295 per tonne was caused due to the non-operation of the mines. 
 
The apex court had on August 25 held that all coal blocks allocation since 1993 by various regimes at the Centre have been made illegally and arbitrarily. 
 
During an earlier hearing in the case, the UPA govt had opposed cancellation of coal blocks allocation saying that around Rs 2 lakh crore had been invested by various companies after blocks were alloted to them.
