<keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAMSUNG" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> on Thursday said it has set a target of screening 150,000 individuals in India for eye diseases using its unique 'EYELIKE Fundus' camera by the end of 2023. The camera has been developed by Samsung in partnership with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) and Lab SD, Inc. To screen patients, Samsung has partnered with four eye hospitals Sitapur Eye Hospital in Uttar Pradesh; Aravind Eye Hospital in Pondicherry; Guruhasti Chikitsalya in Jodhpur, Rajasthan; and Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital in New Delhi. So far, Samsung has upcycled nearly 200 units of old Galaxy smartphones and distributed the cameras to partners in India. "The device comes in handy as it is very easy to use and can be operated by a semi-trained technician as well because of the on-device AI that tells them if the image is normal or abnormal. And since it is portable, it can be carried to remote locations easily where availability of ophthalmic health care is limited," said Dr Sahil Bhandari, Senior Ophthalmologist at Guruhasti Chikitsalya. An older Galaxy smartphone becomes the brain of the EYELIKE' device, capturing images of a person's retina through a lens attachment for enhanced diagnosis of eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration that could lead to blindness if not diagnosed on time. "Programmes such as Galaxy Upcycling' have helped us in transforming lives through the power of innovation. With the 'EYELIKE Fundus' Camera, our partners have been able to provide quality eye screening to patients across India," said Mohan Rao Goli, CTO, Samsung R&amp;D Institute, Bangalore. The Galaxy Upcycling' programme repurposes older Galaxy devices, transforming them into a handheld device that is being used to provide eye care in underserved communities. Engineers at Samsung R&amp;D Institute in Bangalore developed the Fundus image capture mechanism, the artificial intelligence-based processing algorithm, the user interface (UI) and server-related operations in the EYELIKE application. The EYELIKE device scans retinal images and uses an accurate AI-based algorithm on the phones to detect diseases in the retinal images and classify them as normal or abnormal. Some of the ophthalmic diseases that can be diagnosed using Samsung’s Eyelike fundus camera include conditions that could lead to blindness, like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. The company noted that the capabilities of this system are being enhanced to screen cervical cancer. Samsung says that its Eyelike fundus solution has helped 19,000 residents in Vietnam, so far. Around 39% of the job-card holders of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (<keyword id="6361863" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mgnrega" source="Orion">MGNREGA</keyword>) did not find a single day of work in 2020-21, reveals a study. The study, released today, was conducted by <keyword id="125797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji-University" source="Orion">Azim Premji University</keyword> and National Consortium of Civil Society Organisations on <keyword id="46927" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nrega" source="Orion">NREGA</keyword> and Collaborative Research and Dissemination (CORD). The objective of MGNREGA is to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household — whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="‘Made marked difference during the pandemic’" comment="subhead" text="‘Made marked difference during the pandemic’">‘Made marked difference during the pandemic’</cmsannotation> The study also says that only 36% of the households who worked under this scheme received their wages in 15 days. The scheme was able to compensate between 20-80% of income loss, the report said. “Our study shows how much the workers value the need and utility of MGNREGA. More than 8 out of 10 households recommended that MGNREGA should provide 100 days of employment per person per year,” said <keyword id="12443385" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajendran-narayanan" source="Orion">Rajendran Narayanan</keyword>, co-author of the study and faculty member at Azim Premji University. The study was conducted among 2,000 households in 2020-21 across eight blocks in four states — Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. About 63% of the households in the study said that ‘lack of adequate works being sanctioned/opened’ was the major reason behind not getting work. “Massive expansion of the programme is needed to deal with high work demand. Increase the number of administrative personnel by at least doubling the field functionaries. However, according to the report, to fulfill the true demand for work in these blocks, the allocated labour budget should have been ₹474.27 crore, which is more than three times the amount actually spent on wages. “We also find a massive extent of underfunding. A conservative estimate yields that the allocations in the surveyed blocks should have been three times the amount that was actually allocated in the year after lockdown to fulfill the true extent of work demand,” Narayanan added. The MGNREGA earnings were able to compensate between 20-100% of income lost from other sources — for households who had not worked in the pre-Covid year — but did find work during the Covid year. “Covid pandemic, lockdown created unprecedented distress and MGNREGA, as expected, rose to the need and provided work for many more villages and many more households than in the preceding years. MGNREGA’s role for reducing vulnerability has been reemphasized and continues to be of vital importance in post-pandemic times,” said Ashwini Kulkarni of the <keyword id="1546303" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nrega-consortium" source="Orion">NREGA Consortium</keyword>.
