Jaishankar is in Pakistan to participate in the 23rd Meeting of SCO Council of Heads of Government being held today. In visuals of the meeting from state-run Pakistan Television showed Jaishankar and Sharif exchanging a handshake and posing for photographs together for the media. Jaishankar arrived in the neighbouring country yesterday for a two-day visit to attend the 23rd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the (SCO). He attended a dinner hosted by PakistPrime Minister Sharif, during which they shook hands and greeted each other. Upon his arrival at the Rawalpindi airport Jaishankar was warmly received at Nur Khan Airbase by Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, Director General (South Asia) of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Children dressed in traditional attire presented him with flower bouquets. The two-day meeting of SCO CHG, the second highest forum within the SCO, will be chaired by Pakistan's Prime Minister Sharif as the current chair of the Council. Pakistan had assumed the rotating chair of the SCO CHG for 2023-24 at the previous meeting held in Bishkek on October 26, 2023, where the country was represented by then interim Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the meeting will focus on the trade and economic agenda of the organisation. Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation at the 23rd Meeting of the SCO. Foreign Secretaries of neighbouring countries India and Pakistan could finally be meeting towards the end of first week or in the second week of February. They were earlier supposed to meet in Islamabad on January 15-16, but the meeting was postponed after the Pathankot terror strikes. The agenda of the meeting is to finalise the modalities for Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue. 
 Officials of both countries have kept in touch to reschedule the meeting, as confirmed by ET sources, keeping in mind the preoccupations of both Indian foreign secretary <keyword id="491850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="S-Jaishankar">S Jaishankar</keyword> and his Pakistani counterpart <keyword id="1252768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aizaz-Ahmad-Chaudhry">Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry</keyword>. 
 
"The two sides are in touch over the issue of the talks and dates would be announced after mutual agreement," said a Pakistani official. The meeting would prove that the terrorist act couldn’t halt the momentum for normalisation of ties that is being generated from both ends.

Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan may finally meet in early February

India's landslide victory through an unopposed inclusion into the <keyword id="138690" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations-Security-Council">United Nations Security Council</keyword> (UNSC) as a non-permanent member has irked the Imran Khan-led government in Pakistan, as angry reactions have started coming out of Islamabad, threatening India of dire consequences in case of any misadventure committed along the <keyword id="44759" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Control">Line of Control</keyword> (LoC) and the Working Boundary (WB). Pakistan's Foreign Minister <keyword id="121648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shah-Mahmood-Qureshi">Shah Mahmood Qureshi</keyword> has warned India against any misadventure, threatening of a telling retaliatory response. "Beware, beware, remember February 2019 and be ready for a quick retaliation while casting an evil eye on us," he said during his address to the Upper House (Senate) of Pakistan. Qureshi lashed out at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. <keyword id="236448" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaishankar">Jaishankar</keyword>, asserting, "Pakistan can't be cowed down by the Indians." Qureshi also reiterated Islamabad's inclination towards Beijing in the recent deadly clashes in Ladakh between Indian and Chinese forces, stating that Indian soldiers were suffering casualties there. "There is a dramatic shift in the region. China has openly landed in the arena against India," he said. "Nepal, which was thought to be completely under India's influence, is now making claims on some disputed areas with India, while Sri Lanka and Bhutan also had their objections. Afghanistan also thinks India is impeding reconciliation process there," he added. Qureshi briefed the Senate stating that India is facing isolation and New Delhi is feeling the pressure. He also reiterated Islamabad's concerns over what they call a false-flag operation by New Delhi aimed at diverting attention of the global community from the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which has remained under lockdown for almost a year now. Qureshi's aggressive remarks came at a time when the Imran Khan-led government is facing serious criticism from its opposition parties for failing to raise the issue of Kashmir at the UN platform and giving India a walkover to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. While Pakistan voted against India's contention for the non-permanent membership, its vote didn't matter as a heavy majority voted in favour of New Delhi. "Though it was a secret balloting, Pakistan openly said that it had voted against India for last year's August 5 unconstitutional steps it took in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and for violating the UN Charter, UNSC resolutions and international norms," maintained Qureshi. Pakistan's anger over India's inclusion into the UNSC is understandable as its ongoing diplomatic campaign to attract support against the Modi government for its decision taken on August 5, 2019, abrogating Articles 370 and 35A, changing the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, in the United Nations has practically failed to yield results. Tensions at the Line of Control (LoC) have also intensified in the recent days as heavy exchanges of artillery firing have claimed lives of border security forces and civilians on both sides. Pakistan and India both have been lodging strong protests against the ceasefire violations, summoning senior diplomats of respective high commissions to record their protests. Tensions are expected to flare up in the coming days as August 5, 2020 inches closer, marking one year of the lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir, for which Islamabad is gearing up to stage protests, rallies and international conferences. Pakistan warns India 'to be ready for quick retaliation' amid LoC tensions and UNSC membership

India continues to pressurize <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>’s support for <keyword id="6358165" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="terrorism">terrorism</keyword> on Friday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Secretary+S.++Jaishankar+Secretary+S.++Jaishankar+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar</a> shot down Islamabad's usual 'non-state actor' defense for <keyword id="6406102" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Terror-attacks">terror attacks</keyword> carried out from its soil, while speaking at a conference organized by a US government-funded organization. 
 
"At some stage the differentiation is not gone out on the ground. There is a connection between state actors and non-state actors. Which is why we use the word 'sponsored'. The state cannot escape responsibility by saying its non-state," Jaishankar said at the conference. 
 
"We have always maintained the view that acting against some groups is not a justification for giving a free pass, leave alone active support, for other groups" he added. 
 
Including this time, India along with US have voiced against terrorism thriving in Pakistan, thrice. Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=narendra+modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Narendra Modi </a>had already made a statement on this during his visits to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=G20+Summit&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">G20 Summit</a> in China and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ASEAN+Summit+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ASEAN Summit</a> in Laos. 
 
Jaishankar also used the platform to bring China into the terrorism debate. He said, “There is an expectation in India that China would be appreciative of India's interests, especially when they aren't in conflict with China. Combating terrorism is one such area. Sanctioning of well-known terrorist leaders and organizations shouldn't emerge as an issue of difference." 
 
He also criticized China for opposing India’s bid at becoming more integrated with global governance and its bid for membership in the Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) and also asked China, its support for free access to Sea Lanes of Communication in the South China Sea. 
 
The remarks made by Jaishankar, were a part of his speech at the 2016 International Media Conference organized by the US government-funded East-West Centre, titled under 'India's Diplomatic Initiatives'. 
 
China also had issues with terrorism network and camps in Pakistan and believes that Pak has been using the Xinjiang region to train separatists.

In yet another embarrassment to Islamabad, the Chinese firm, which apparently manufactured the drone shot down by Pakistan along the LoC, said the aircraft was not sold to any government. 
 
The Pakistani army had downed an unmanned aircraft along the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=line+of+control">LoC</a> on July 15, saying it was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=spy+drone">spy drone</a> from India. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=jaishankar">Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar</a> had who refuted <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan">Pakistan</a>'s claims of shooting down an Indian drone, adding that it was not in the inventory of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army">Indian defence forces</a>. 
 
On Wednesday, a news report in The Global Times read that Chinese drone maker, DJI, said that governments are not their direct customers, reinforcing India's stand. 
 
Earlier, Chinese official media, People's Daily Online, reported that the phantom 3 drone was made in China by DJI. 
 
Pakistan had summoned Indian High Commissioner to Islamabad TCA Raghavan to protest over it. 
 
The Global Times report also quoted DJI as saying that it is not difficult to purchase their drones through its website or through any vendors. 
 
DJI, headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, was founded in 2006.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Evacuee Property Trust Board (EPTB), which looks after the holy places of minorities in the country, Ahmed said that under an agreement between Pakistan and India at least 7,500 Sikh and 1,000 Hindu pilgrims from India could visit Pakistan each year. "Since the number of Indian pilgrims is less than the agreed one during the last many years, we have initiated efforts to increase the number of pilgrims from India," he said. There are two major events -- Baba Guru Nanak's birth anniversary and Vaisakhi Mela -- celebrated in Pakistan in which around 5,000 Indian Sikhs participated last year. Similarly, less than 300 Indian Hindus visited Pakistan last year to celebrate the birth anniversary of Shiv Avtari Satguru Sant Sawami Shadaram Sahib at Hayat Pitafi Sindh province and Katas Raj temples in Chakwal, Punjab province, last year. Bilateral relations between Islamabad and New Delhi have been tense since August 2019 when India changed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. On India's ties with Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has made it clear that it is not possible for India to have normal relations with the neighbouring country until the policy of cross-border terrorism is abrogated. Ahmed said that the ETPB offered scholarships worth 13 million Pakistani Rupees to non-Muslim students in the country last year. The minister said a lot of work has to be done to increase religious tourism to promote the soft image of Pakistan. EPTB Chairman Ataur Rehman told the federal minister that the board owns 109,000 acres of agricultural and non-agricultural land across the country.
