<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">Stephen Dunn/Getty Images</p></div>The talk around the league is that the <keyword id="263263" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-Jets">New York Jets</keyword> <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/24/bills-fear-jets-will-take-ryan-nassib/">are seriously interested in picking Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib</a>, Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reports.</p>
<p>According to Paolantonio, the Buffalo Bills — who everyone has as the favorite to pick Nassib — are scared that the Jets are going to pick him if they pass on him with the No. 8 pick.</p>
<p>The Jets have the 9th and 13th picks in the first round, and the 39th pick in the second round. If they use one of those on Nassib, it'll be a major gamble.</p>
<p>Nassib is one of the top-five QBs in this draft, but this is widely considered an awful draft for quarterbacks. There's no Andrew Luck or RGIII out there, and ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/story/_/id/9181396/2013-nfl-draft-offensive-lineman-dominate-top-draft">only has one quarterback on his top-25 list</a> (Geno Smith).</p>
<p>In addition, the league is deeply divided on Nassib.</p>
<p>In a chat on ESPN, Adam Schefter <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/blog/_/name/schefter_adam">wrote this sobering analysis of how the league sees Nassib</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"<span>If [Bills coach Doug Marrone] loves Nassib that much, he should go get him at No. 8, no questions asked. </span>Most teams do not have Nassib rated that highly. Some have him as a fourth-round pick, others as a second, and there are some that have him rated as the top quarterback on the board. Opinions really are across the board. But here's the thing: It's only going to take one team at one spot to grab him."</p>
<p>Kiper, for his part, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/story/_/id/9178890/2013-nfl-draft-mel-kiper-lists-grade-draft">has him as a "late second-round" type of talent</a> — not terrible, but far from 9-13 range where the Jets are picking.</p>
<p>Other experts <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/expert-nfl-mock-draft-2013-4">(in fact, many experts)</a> have him going to the Bills at 8th overall.</p>
<p>The Jets are in full rebuilding mode, so it makes sense to bring in a young QB and try to start fresh. If they love Nassib and he's still there at the 39th pick, it'll be worth the gamble.</p>
<p>But using a top-15 pick on a quarterback who some teams think is a fourth-rounder?</p>
<p>That's questionable.</p>

There's A Rumor That The Jets Are Going To Take The Most Polarizing Quarterback In The NFL Draft

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Raiders defensive lineman Carl Nassib became the first active <keyword id="103436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFL">NFL</keyword> player to come out as gay.</li><li>Nassib received support from across the NFL world for his decision to come out.</li><li>"The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," said <keyword id="1489282" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Roger-Goodell">Roger Goodell</keyword>.</li></ul><p>NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell offered his support to Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib, who made history on Monday when he became <a href="https://www.insider.com/first-gay-nfl-player-carl-nassib-raiders-coming-out-instagram-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the first active NFL player to come out as gay</a>.</p><p>"The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," Goodell <a href="https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/06/21/roger-goodell-nfl-is-proud-of-carl-nassib-for-courageously-sharing-his-truth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. "Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season."</p><p>Nassib came out in a video he shared to Instagram, in which he also said he would be donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a leading LGBTQ+ charity aimed at combatting the high rates of suicide among queer kids and young adults.</p><p>"I just want to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay," Nassib said.. "I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I really have the best life. I've got the best family, friends, and job a guy could ask for. I'm a pretty private person, so I hope you guys know I'm not doing this for attention, but I think representation matters."</p><p>In addition to Goodell's statement, other players, coaches, and fans across the country sent out their messages of thanks and congratulations to Nassib.</p><p>James Franklin, who coached Nassib at Penn State, as well as Saquon Barkley, who was Nassib's teammate with the Nittany Lions, both said they were proud of his statement.</p><p>Several other teams, players, and former players around the league also came out in support of Nassib.</p><p>Like Goodell said, someday, statements like Nassib's will no longer be newsworthy, but until then, it's important for the league to support its players who are out.</p><p>Nassib is the first active NFL player to come out as gay, but he will not be the last.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ron Antonelli/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The NFL is investigating whether the New York Giants violated league rules against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night when head coach Ben McAdoo was forced to use a walkie-talkie to communicate with Eli Manning.</p><p>Early in the fourth quarter, the radio transmitter in Manning's helmet stopped working, so McAdoo started to use a walkie-talkie to give his quarterback plays. Under NFL rules, communication between the sideline and the quarterback must stop with 15 seconds left on the play clock; McAdoo's use of a walkie-talkie makes it hard to know for certain whether the Giants violated this. </p><p><a href="http://nypost.com/2016/12/15/nfl-investigating-giants-for-possible-walkie-talkie-violation/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow&amp;sr_share=twitter">According to the New York Post,</a> the Cowboys lodged an official complaint following the game. At that point, the league had already started to look into it. </p><p>Manning's helmet radio cut out earlier in the game, too, which forced him to run back and forth between the sideline to get the play.</p><p><span>"I just wasn't getting anything, so I had to run to the sideline to get the plays," Manning <a href="http://nypost.com/2016/12/15/nfl-investigating-giants-for-possible-walkie-talkie-violation/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow&amp;sr_share=twitter">said</a>. "Four plays maybe, we don't have signals for stuff. It happened to be all run plays. If it's pass plays, [backup quarterback Ryan] Nassib or somebody could signal them to me. I had to run to the sideline, sometimes he was giving it to Odell [Beckham Jr.] right there, and Odell would run to me and get the play in. Like high school."</span></p><p>Manning added that he didn't know whether he and McAdoo had violated any rules because of the walkie-talkie.</p><p id="T2xzgS">"I don't know if we did or didn't [break the rules] or what happened there," Manning <a href="http://nypost.com/2016/12/15/nfl-investigating-giants-for-possible-walkie-talkie-violation/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow&amp;sr_share=twitter">said</a>.</p><p>Ultimately, this shouldn't become a major controversy. If the league does find that the Giants didn't comply with the rule, it's hard to imagine anything more than a fine. </p><div><div><p>"It's obvious to everybody what happened and my understanding is it's being looked into and handled,'' Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' executive vice president, <a href="http://nypost.com/2016/12/15/nfl-investigating-giants-for-possible-walkie-talkie-violation/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow&amp;sr_share=twitter">told reporters.</a>"If you're asking me if it affected the outcome of the game? That gap, between starter and backup, of $19.8 million is the largest in the NFL.</p>
<p>At the other end, there are nine teams actually paying the backup more than the starter. The winless Oakland Raiders have the biggest gap as starter Derek Carr has a cap hit of just $976,700 and backup Matt Schaub's cap number is $8.0 million.</p>
<p>In all, 13 teams are paying their starting quarterback at least $10.0 million more than his backup. Overall, the average cap hit is $9.2 million for starting quarterbacks and $2.1 million for backups.</p>

The Oakland Raiders Have The Most Expensive Backup Quarterback In The NFL And No Wins

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>When you have a pick in the top 10 of the NFL Draft, you hope that you're going to get a franchise-altering player. If not, you'll settle for a consistent, above-average starter.</p><p>A lot of teams didn't get either of those things at the top of the 2013 NFL Draft.</p><p>No. 3 pick Dion Jordan, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dion-jordan-suspension-miami-dolphins-trade-disaster-2015-4">who was suspended for the entire 2015 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy on Tuesday</a>, is the most glaring example of a bust. But when you look at it, the 2013 Draft was pretty rough across the board.</p><p>No one picked in the top 10 has made a Pro Bowl and three of the 10 weren't starters in 2014. Here was the top 10:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>1. Eric Fisher, OL (Kansas City Chiefs)</strong> - Fisher has started consistently for the Chiefs but hasn't distinguished himself. ESPN's Mel Kiper <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-chiefs/post/_/id/5014/fisher-would-be-no-prize-in-this-years-draft">said last year</a> that Fisher wouldn't have gone in the top-eight of the 2014 Draft.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>2. Luke Joeckel, OL (Jacksonville Jaguars) -</strong> After missing almost all of his rookie year with an injury, Joeckel started all 16 games on a Jacksonville line that <a href="http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol">finished dead last in pass protection in 2014</a>.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>3. Dion Jordan, DE (Miami Dolphins) -</strong> Jordan barely got onto the field in his rookie year. He was suspended six games in 2014 and played only 20% of his team's snaps. Now he's out for all of 2015.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>4. Lane Johnson, OL (Philadelphia Eagles)</strong> - While he hasn't made a Pro Bowl, he has been a solid starter on an Eagles line that improved dramatically when Chip Kelly got there.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>5. Ziggy Ansah, DE (Detroit Lions)</strong> - He's probably the player on this list with the most potential. He has 15.5 sacks in his first two years and saw his playing time increase in 2014.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>6. Barkevious Mingo, LB (Cleveland Browns)</strong> - He's not the dominant edge rusher they thought he'd be, picking up just 2.0 sacks in 2014 in 11 starts. </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>7. Jonathan Cooper, OL (Arizona Cardinals)</strong> - Only played 17.4% of his team's snaps in 2014 after missing his rookie year with a broken leg.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>8. Tavon Austin, WR (St. Louis Rams)</strong> - He hasn't been the electrifying playmaker many though he would be. He has started 11 games in two years, making just 31 catches in 2014.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>9. Dee Milliner, CB (New York Jets)</strong> - After a tumultuous rookie year Milliner was benched in 2014 and only played 11.4% of his team's snaps.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>10. Chance Warmack, OL (Tennessee Titans) -</strong> He has started all 16 games both years.</p><p>So basically, best-case scenario you got an average NFL offensive lineman.</p><p>Going into the draft everyone knew that it'd be a bit of a crapshoot. There were no franchise-altering quarterbacks, dominant defensive linemen, or game-breaking skill players. A year before one of the best wide receiver drafts ever in 2014, only one WR was picked in the top 25 in 2013.</p><p>Teams that bet on a quarterback in 2013 all came up empty. Here were the first five quarterbacks selected:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">E.J. Manuel (16th overall, 1st round, Bills)</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Geno Smith (39th overall, 2nd round, Jets)</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mike Glennon (73rd overall, 3rd round, Bucs)</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Matt Barkley (98th overall, 4th round, Eagles)</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ryan Nassib (110th overall, 4th round, Giants)</span></li></ul><p>Smith is the only nominal starter, and that might not be the case by August. For comparison, four quarterbacks were taken in the top-25 in 2012, and three of them are still starters (if you count RGIII as a starter).</p><p>2013 was the worst possible year to find a quarterback through the draft.</p><p>Grantland's Bill Barnwell and Robert Mays <a href="http://grantland.com/features/the-2013-nfl-redraft/">did a hypothetical re-draft of the 2013 Draft last October</a>. Sheldon Richardson was the clear No. 1 choice, but after that it got murky. Interestingly, the top three picks in real life - Fisher, Joeckel, and Jordan - didn't make the top-20 of the re-draft.</p><p>There simply wasn't a lot of high-end talent in that draft.</p><p>Based on Pro-Football-Reference's <a href="http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2013/draft.htm">"approximate value" stat</a> - an advanced stat that quantified a player's total contribution to his team - here are the 10 best players from the 2013 Draft through two seasons:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">1. Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers (61th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">2. Le'Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers (48th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">3. Kyle Long, Chicago Bears (20th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">4. Travis Frederick, Dallas Cowboys (31st pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">5. David Bakhtiari, Green Bay Packers (109th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">6. D.J. Fluker, San Diego Chargers (11th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">7. Alec Ogletree, St. Louis Rams (30th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">8. Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals (37th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">9. Kennan Allen, San Diego Chargers (76th pick)</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">10. Eric Fisher, Kansas City Chiefs (1st pick)</p><p>It just goes to show how much luck is involved in the draft. One year, Andrew Luck might be there at No. 1.
