Report: Tim Pernetti Out As Athletic Director At Rutgers

<p>Brecht has been the head lacrosse coach since June of 2011.</p>
<p>Rutgers president Robert Barchi released the following statement:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">“While I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation, let me reiterate that there is no place at Rutgers for words or actions that are inconsistent with the values of the university. Our student athletes, as all members of the Rutgers community, should know that our university is committed to promoting an atmosphere of respect and dignity. As I stressed earlier, we will be looking closely at all intercollegiate athletics at Rutgers going forward. If we find problems, we will address them.”</p>
<p>This comes just weeks after the men's basketball coach Mike Rice was fired for abusing players, and athletic director Tim Pernetti stepped down. Brecht was also hired by Pernetti.</p>

Rutgers Head Lacrosse Coach Suspended For Alleged 'Verbal Abuse'

<p>Pernetti made this decision after viewing videos of Rice throwing balls and kicking players at practice and conducting "a thorough, lengthy and fair investigation."</p>
<p>On Tuesday, ESPN's "Outside The Lines," released said videos from Rice's practices, and after serious backlash, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/coach-mike-rice-to-be-fired-by-rutgers-2013-4">Peretti and Rutgers president Robert L. Barchi, fired Rice on Wednesday</a>.</p>
<p>Good. We can all agree, after watching the video of Rice physically and verbally abusing his players, that he should not be allowed to coach anymore.</p>
<p>But the real question is, why did it take the videos going public to fire Rice? As <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/04/03/mike-rice-rutgers-tim-pernetti-robert-barchi-morning-win/2048709/?sf11135382=1">Dan Shanoff at USA Today</a> points out, it's obvious that Pernetti and Rutgers had no intention of getting rid of Rice until those videos were available for anyone, and everyone, to criticize.</p>
<p>Rice should have been fired on December 13, 2012 when he was only suspended and fined. Instead, Pernetti allowed Rice to keep "coaching" the basketball team, a move that put Rutgers student-athletes at risk.</p>
<p>Pernetti too, should be fired for this misjudgment.</p>
<p>After seeing that video yesterday, everyone's immediate reaction was to fire Rice. How could that not have been Peretti's reaction in December?</p>

Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti Should Be Fired Too

<p>According to an Associated Press report, Pernetti will receive $1.2 million in salary, an iPad, a laptop, "car allowance," and two years of health insurance. The $1.2 million represents Pernetti's salary through June, 2014.</p>
<p>In addition, Rutgers has agreed to provide lawyers for Pernetti if he is named in a lawsuit related to his job at Rutgers.</p>
<p>While paying all or part of an athletic director's remaining salary is standard practice in cases where the person is fired or forced to resign, the other perks raise questions. As a public university, those items were essentially property of the state of New Jersey. And considering where the athletic department is now, many in the state will wonder why one of the key players in the scandal gets parting gifts on the way out the door.</p>

Former AD's Settlement With Rutgers Includes $1.2 Million And A Free iPad

<p>The FBI is investigating whether a former Rutgers basketball employee tried to extort the university before he made videos that showed ex-coach Mike Rice shoving and kicking players and berating them with gay slurs.</p>
<p>A person familiar with the situation told The <keyword id="176712" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Associated-Press">Associated Press</keyword> on Sunday that investigators are interested in Eric Murdock, who left his job as the men's basketball program's player development director last year and later provided the video to university officials and ESPN.</p>
<p>The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the inquiry has not been announced. The investigation was first reported by The New York Times.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman for the FBI's Newark office said the agency would not say whether there is an investigation. Murdock's lawyer did not return a call to the AP on Sunday. A Rutgers spokesman referred questions to the FBI.</p>
<p>A December letter from Murdock's lawyer to a lawyer representing Rutgers requested $950,000 to settle employment issues and said that if the university did not agree by Jan. 4, Murdock was prepared to file a lawsuit. The letter was obtained last week by the AP and other media outlets.</p>
<p>No settlement has been made. The video became public last week, and Murdock on Friday filed a lawsuit against the university, contending he was fired because he was a whistleblower trying to bring to light Rice's behavior.</p>
<p>The video's release last week set off a chain reaction that led to Rice's firing and the resignations of athletic director Tim Pernetti, the university's top in-house lawyer and an assistant basketball coach. Some critics want the university's president, Robert Barchi, to resign.</p>
<p>At a news conference last week, Barchi said the firing and resignations likely never would have happened unless Murdock provided the video to ESPN. Barchi said he did not see the video himself until after it had been made public.</p>
<p>Murdock, a New Jersey native who played for seven NBA teams from 1991 to 2000, was on the initial staff Rice assembled when he became the Rutgers coach in 2010. He left the team last year, though there are conflicting stories about the circumstances.</p>
<p>Murdock has said Rice fired him after he skipped a session of Rice's summer basketball camp, but has said he was targeted because he had spoken with others about Rice's conduct at practice. The university found in a report that Murdock was not actually fired and that he could have continued working at the school.</p>
<p>After Murdock left, he spoke with university officials about his allegations against Rice. He also used an open public records request to obtain hundreds of hours of videos of basketball practice. It's not clear who shot the original footage, but it was edited into the half-hour video later given to the university that touched off a scandal last week.</p>
<p>The university report on Rice, which was completed in December but not made public until Friday, criticized the video provided by Murdock as taken many situations out of context. While the report found fault with Rice's behavior in several instances, it also said he did not create a hostile work environment, as Murdock had suggested.</p>
<p>The report also said that Murdock had claimed some violations of NCAA rules — including that he and others in the program paid players — but he did not provide evidence.</p>
<p>After a review, university officials agreed to suspend Rice without pay for three games, fine him $50,000, send him to anger-management counseling and monitor his behavior.</p>
<p>Barchi said when he first saw the video last week he immediately decided Rice could not continue as coach.</p>

CONFIRMED: Rutgers Employee Who Exposed Abusive Coach Is Being Investigated For Extortion

<p><keyword id="31081" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saturday-Night-Live">Saturday Night Live</keyword> did a five-minute skit on the <keyword id="1749681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mike-Rice">Mike Rice</keyword> player abuse scandal at Rutgers last night.</p>
<p>The skit was a mock episode of ESPN's Outside The Lines where they uncover that a women's coach (Melissa McCarthy) at a small Delaware school has been doing even worse things in practice — throwing toasters, etc.</p>

Saturday Night Live Made Fun Of The Rutgers Player Abuse Scandal

<p>Pernetti saw the video back in December, but only suspended Rice for three games and fined him $50,000</p>
<p>But in <a href="http://www.scarletknights.com/news/release.asp?prID=13052#.UV8II6vBK7M">his resignation letter</a>, Pernetti said he wanted to fire Rice all along, and implied that the school stopped him the doing that.</p>
<p>The key passage:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice's behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved."</p>
<p>So Pernetti is saying that the overwhelming narrative — that he saw the video December, but only fired Rice after it was made public — is wrong. He's blaming the bureaucratic process for Rice keeping his job, essentially.</p>

Ex-Rutgers Athletic Director Says He Wanted To Fire Coach Mike Rice Four Months Ago

<p>After you watch that video, it's impossible to conclude anything other than Rice should be fired.</p>
<p>So any Rutgers official who saw that video in December will have some serious questions to answer in the coming days.</p>
<p>And luckily for him, Rutgers University president Robert Barchi was supposedly not one of the people who saw it in December. In <a href="http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2013/04/statement_from_rutgers_preside.html#incart_maj-story-1">a statement released yesterday</a>, he implied that he saw the video for the first time yesterday morning. Today, <a href="http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2013/04/the_question_for_tim_pernetti.html">a spokesman confirmed that Barchi didn't see the video in December</a> to Steve Politi of the Newark Star-Ledger.</p>
<p>There's some confusion about this.</p>
<p>ESPN <a href="http://espn.go.com/new-york/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9128825/rutgers-scarlet-knights-fire-coach-mike-rice-wake-video-scandal">reported that Barchi saw the video in December</a>, and that he still signed off on the suspension after watching it. And athletic director Tim Pernetti told reporters that Barchi had seen the video at a Q&amp;A yesterday, <a href="http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2013/04/the_question_for_tim_pernetti.html">according the Newark Star-Ledger</a>.</p>
<p>But Pernetti didn't mean that Barchi had seen the video in December, his spokesman told the paper, he meant that he saw it <em>that morning</em>.</p>
<p>So Barchi and Pernetti are now both contending that he saw the video for the first time yesterday.</p>
<p>You can certainly criticize Barchi for signing off on the suspension without seeing the evidence. But because he didn't see the video until the rest of us saw it, he will probably emerge from this scandal relatively unscathed.</p>

<p>He also said that he has been working on "changing" since December, when the incidents occurred and he was suspended for three games.</p>

My players, my administration, Rutgers University, the fans, my family, who's sitting in their house just huddled around because of the fact that their father was an embarrassment to them. And it's troubling, but at some time maybe I'll try to explain it. But right now there's no explanation for what's on those films because there's no excuse for it. I was wrong. I want to tell everyone who has believed in me that I'm deeply sorry for the pain and hardship that I've cause them. Thank you very much."</p>

Ex-Rutgers Coach Calls Himself An 'Embarrassment' In First Interview Since Getting Fired

<p>Rice was suspended for three games and fined $50,000 after Rutgers' athletic director Tim Pernetti reviewed 30 minutes of the tapes in December, according to ESPN.</p>

<p>Gilvydas Biruta, a former Rutgers player from Lithuania who transferred to Rhode Island, <a href="http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/9125796/practice-video-shows-rutgers-basketball-coach-mike-rice-berated-pushed-used-slurs-players">told ESPN</a> that the main reason he left was because of the way Rice treated him:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"He would throw his cap at me and he would call me many names. The adjectives were creative. They were mean words." Biruta said Rice's insults were often not about his game but about him personally. "If you're going to criticize me as a basketball player, I'm OK with that," he said, "but he would criticize me as a person."</p>
<p>Other players were more supportive of Coach Rice's technique. Player Tyree Graham told "Outside The Lines" that he "backed what Coach Rice did for the most part" and that sometimes Rice "crossed the line" but he understood his tactics.</p>

<p>The school knew about the incidents and saw the video in December. They fined Rice $50,000 and suspended him for three games at the time, but he was only fired after the video went public. According to Richard Deitsch of SI, Rutgers president Robert L. Rutgers Fires Basketball Coach Mike Rice After Video Of Him Abusing Players Goes Public

<p>The video outraged many in the sports world, including Miami Heat guard and University of Connecticut Board of Directors member Ray Allen.</p>
<p>In an interview with Ethan J. Skolnick of the Palm Beach Post, <a href="http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/heatzone/2013/04/02/ray-allen-calls-mike-rice-despicable-video/">Allen spoke emotionally about his disdain for Rice's behavior</a>. He called him "despicable," said players should be allowed to transfer without penalty, and called for Rice to be fired.</p>
<p>He talked about the role coaches play in kids lives, where they are something close to parental figures:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I mean, it was just despicable. Not only as a parent, but I think about where I went, the places I’ve gone in my career, my parents kind of lent me to all these other people. I’ve been raised not only by Mom and Dad, but by several coaches, AAU coaches, high school coaches and then my college coach, and all of them had a hand in getting me to who I am today. And not to mention the teachers that I grew up under, learning, so we trust in the people we lend our kids off to, to help them grow. And I only hope when I let my kids go, there’s somebody watching them and growing and making sure they do that."</p>
<p>He said it made him want to fight Rice:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"What I’ve seen in that video was despicable. It made me want to fight, it made me want to fight this guy, watching him throw the ball at those players. Because that’s me, wanting to learn, you make mistakes, you’re not doing it on purpose, you’re trying to learn. And that’s what coaches should do, you teach. Yelling at kids and throwing balls at them, there’s no place for that."</p>
<p>He said he would fire Rice if the incidents happened at UConn:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>“I would do everything I can to make sure that coach got fired, whether it was any sport, because there’s no place for that.”</span></p>
<p>In the video (below), Rice called his players "f***ing f****ts," pushed them, kicked them, and threw balls at their heads.</p>
<p>He was suspended three games when the school learned about the incidents last December. But now that the video has been made public, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2013/04/02/mike-rice-tim-pernetti-rutgers-basketball-video/2048065/">they are reportedly considering firing him</a>.</p>

Miami Heat's Ray Allen Went On A Rant About The 'Despicable' Rutgers Coach Who Kicked And Abused Players

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"><img src="http://static1.businessinsider.com/image/515da0d86bb3f7684f000005-1083-812/sean-hannity-eric-bolling-mike-rice.png?maxX=400" border="0" alt="Sean Hannity Eric Bolling Mike Rice" width="400" /></div><p class="source">Fox News</p></div>There has been near-unanimous condemnation of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/coach-mike-rice-to-be-fired-by-rutgers-2013-4" target="_blank">fired Rutgers men's basketball head coach Mike Rice</a>, after footage surfaced of him verbally abusing players with homophobic slurs and throwing balls at their heads.</p>
<p>Rice found two defenders Wednesday in Fox News hosts <keyword id="379953" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sean-Hannity">Sean Hannity</keyword> and Eric Bolling, who both suggested Rice's actions were the product of old-fashioned discipline. </p>
<p>During a discussion on the topic with guest Michelle Malkin, Hannity said that Rice was "trying to get the best" out of his team.</p>
<p>"I'm watching this and I'm thinking, all right, I don't like it. He kicked one player there. But on the other hand, I kind of like old-fashioned discipline," Hannity said. "Have we become that politically incorrect? These are adults. If they don't want to play for that team, they can leave."</p>
<p>Hannity added: "My father hit me with a belt, and I turned out OK."</p>
<p>Earlier in the day on "The Five," Bolling defended Rice and said the backlash against him was a product of the "wussification of American men."</p>
<p><span>"We're in the midst of political correctness crushing our ability to teach kids, to discipline kids, to disagree with people," Bolling said. "Our culture is in decline, but this is an example of our culture in free fall."</span></p>
<p>A wide array of people from politicians — <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2013/04/christie-disturbed-by-video-of-coach-89577.html" target="_blank">New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie</a> — to other premier coaches — Louisville's Rick Pitino and <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/04/03/rutgers-mike-rice-phil-jackson-twitter/2051297/" target="_blank">former Los Angeles Lakers legend Phil Jackson</a> — have denounced Rice's actions as "disturbing." Miami Heat guard <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ray-allen-calls-for-mike-rice-to-be-fired-2013-4" target="_blank">Ray Allen called the video</a> "despicable" and said it made him want to fight Rice.</p>
<p>So far, Rutgers players have stayed silent on the issue.</p>
