Russia will start the production of its <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> within two weeks, the country's <keyword id="9682335" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-minister-mikhail-murashko">health minister Mikhail Murashko</keyword> said. "First of all, the production facilities in Russia will be oriented towards the domestic market, to meet the need of our citizens," Murashko said during a news conference on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported. Russia will offer the vaccine to other countries when it has sufficient amounts, the minister said, adding that foreign nations' doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine are unfounded. Russia to begin COVID-19 vaccine production within 2 weeks

Dr Reddy's had applied for EUA before the CDSCO, and its application was reviewed by the SEC on Wednesday, a source told. India's drug regulator asks Dr Reddy's for more data, as it reviews emergency use of Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V

Iran and Russia to jointly produce COVID-19 vaccine

Union Health Minister <keyword id="196226" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harsh-Vardhan">Harsh Vardhan</keyword> clarified on Sunday that the government is yet to take a final decision on phase-3 trials of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine candidate Sputnik V. "This issue is still under consideration and no final decision on Sputnik V vaccine developed by Russia has been taken as yet," he stated while addressing his social media audience during his weekly programme 'Sunday Samvaad'. The clarification by the minister has come after a pharmaceutical giant, which partnered with Russia's sovereign wealth fund in September to conduct final trials and distribution of the Sputnik V, sought permission for the same from <keyword id="682334" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> (DCGI) on Friday. Hyderabad-based drugmaker Dr Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) had partnered the <keyword id="1397612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Direct-Investment-Fund">Russian Direct Investment Fund</keyword> (RDIF) last month to conduct final-stage human trials and distribution of Russia's Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine in India. Two days ago, the DRL had applied to the DCGI for permission to conduct the phase-3 human clinical trials of Sputnik. Upon regulatory approval in India, RDIF will supply Dr Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine, the firm had said last month. The trials of Sputnik V are mired in controversy. The Russian government registered Sputnik V as a COVID-19 vaccine without conducting final clinical trials. Besides, the phase I and II of the trials involved merely 76 participants. The Indian scientists and medical experts are also of the opinion that the Indian government should conduct phase-2 trials of the vaccine to prove its safety and efficacy. Russia, had announced in August that it has developed the world's first <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> vaccine. However, the country had made the announcement before completion of phase-3 trials. A vaccine is deemed safe to be commercially available only after a larger efficacy trial which involves thousands of participants in the phase-3. However, the study of Sputnik trials published in The Lancet declared the vaccine as "Safe, well-tolerated, and does not cause serious adverse events in <keyword id="10049599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthy-adult-volunteers">healthy adult volunteers</keyword>." As per the study, two small trials were conducted on two groups involving 38 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, each. They were given a two-part immunisation. Each participant was given a dose of the first part of the vaccine, and then a booster with the second part, 21 days later. These volunteers were monitored over 42 days, and it was found that all of them developed antibodies against the virus within three weeks. After widespread criticism of conducting relatively small and early trials before registering Sputnik V as a COVID-19 vaccine, Russia said that a more rigorous phase-3 <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> has been planned with the involvement of 40,000 volunteers "from different age and risk groups". Centre yet to decide on phase-3 trials of Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, says Health Minister Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, With the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approving <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword>'s 'Covishield' vaccine and <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword>'s 'Covaxin' for emergency use, paving way for their roll-out and administration to millions, Russian <keyword id="9739267" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V">Sputnik V</keyword> vaccine makers have said that they are working with <keyword id="6409874" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword> (AZ) to take the efficacy of AZ vaccine to over 90%. In a tweet, Sputnik V said: "As Indian regulator recommends for approval full-dose regimen of AstraZeneca's vaccine with efficacy of 62.1% based on phase 3 clinical data. Sputnik V is working on clinical trials with AZ to increase the efficacy of AZ vaccine to over 90%". AstraZeneca is currently working with the Russians on the combination of their vaccine's vector with that from Sputnik V (showing 91.4% efficacy as per Phase 3 final control point recorded last month), precisely to see if that could help boost its vaccine's efficacy to over 90% as well. While both vaccines use adenoviral vector technology, the AstraZeneca vaccine is based on a chimpanzee adenovirus (which is not the most popular technology among the vaccinated as recently conducted polls indicated that, given a choice, consumers prefer other technologies), the Sputnik V vaccine is based on a human adenovirus. Unlike AstraZeneca, which uses one and the same component for both inoculations, the Russian vaccine uses two different ones in two separate inoculations. Using the latter approach could prove more efficient in achieving a longer-lasting immune response. Covishield and Covaxin have to be administered in two doses and can be stored at 2-8 degrees Celsius. The Drugs Controller General of India has also granted permission to <keyword id="63358" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cadila-Healthcare">Cadila healthcare</keyword> for phase 3 clinical trial in India. The vaccine will be first offered to one crore healthcare workers, along with two crore frontline and essential workers and 27 crore elderly, mostly above the age of 50 years with co-morbidities. India will produce about 300 million doses of the Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in 2021, Head of the <keyword id="1397612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Direct-Investment-Fund">Russian Direct Investment Fund</keyword> (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev, said in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel last month. "In India, we have agreements with four large manufacturers. India will produce about 300 million doses or more of the vaccine for us next year," Russian news agency Tass quoted him as saying. India’s Dr Reddy’s Lab to get 100 million doses of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine after regulatory approval

An expert panel of India's central drug authority has recommended granting approval to Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V for emergency use in the country with certain conditions, sources said. This is just in time for the country to open up vaccinations for everyone above the age of 18 years. “The first doses will be delivered on May 1,” the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev, told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/india-receive-first-batch-russias-covid-19-vaccine-may-1-interfax-2021-04-26/">Reuters</a>. However, he did not disclose the number of doses that will be a part of the first batch or where they will be manufactured. In this collaboration, RDIF hopes to manufacture over 850 million doses of the vaccine annually. By summer, it plans to hit 50 million doses a month and continue increasing output from there. A lot of this will depend on the momentum of technology transfer to allow Indian manufacturers to produce the vaccine. Virchow Biotech, for instance, is expected to complete its technology transfer between April to June, according to RDIF. Only then will it be able to commence full-scale commercial production of Sputnik V. The vaccine has also been approved by many of India’s neighbours including Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Pakistan. Russia is also lending a helping hand when it comes to Remdesivir. India will receive the first batch of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine by May 1 — in time for the third phase of its vaccination drive

Washington, Apr 4 (AP) An odd new front in the U.S.-Russian rivalry has emerged as a Russian military cargo plane bearing a load of urgently needed medical supplies landed this week at New York's JFK airport.Russia cast it as a magnanimous aid contribution to a struggling country in need – its old Cold War rival. The State Department insisted that Wednesday's shipment was a mere commercial transaction: that the US had paid Russia for the supplies it needed and they were certainly not a gift.Yet President Donald Trump on Thursday referred to the shipment as "aid," and said the United States had accepted "a very nice offer" from Russian President Vladimir Putin.Hours later, the State Department clarified its initial statement, saying the supplies were purchased - but at a discount. But even then there was a twist: The discount came because the supplies had been channeled through the Russian Direct Investment Fund - a government sovereign wealth fund that has been subject to U.S. sanctions for Ukraine-related activities since 2015.Amid the contradictory claims and vague explanations, the details of the shipment - its exact contents and cost - were not immediately clear, although a case could be made that both sides' versions have an element of truth.Russia's Foreign Ministry says the supplies, which were turned over to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, are part of humanitarian assistance shipments Moscow is sending to countries in need. After Trump's comments on Thursday, however, the State Department allowed that the Russian medical supplies had been purchased at a discount. "The United States is purchasing the supplies and equipment outright, as with deliveries from other countries," it said. "We appreciate Russia selling these items to us below market value." That clarification suggested that at least some of the supplies were indeed provided as aid, and from a Russian government entity under U.S. sanctions. The department acknowledged the role of the Russian Direct Investment Fund in the shipment, but said the sanctions against it "would not apply to transactions for the provision of medical equipment and supplies." Treasury added RDIF's management company to its sanctions list in 2015 because of its links to the Russian bank Vnesheconombank, which has been active in Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia annexed in 2014. The U.S. and most other countries still consider the Black Sea peninsula to be part of Ukraine.Treasury warned Americans about evasive practices that companies linked to the fund might undertake related to Ukraine. <ul><li>Russia has signed up with four large manufacturers in India to produce 300 million doses of the <keyword id="9739267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V">Sputnik V</keyword> vaccine in 2021.</li><li>This triples the amount of the vaccine that Russia has initially contracted to be manufactured in India. </li><li>According to the Russian Embassy, the first samples of the COVID-19 vaccine produced in India are already being tested by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).</li></ul>Russia has signed on four large manufacturers to produce a whopping 300 million doses of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine in India. This is a three-fold increase in the manufacturing of Sputnik V doses from before. "In India, we have agreements with four large manufacturers. ... India will produce about 300 mln doses or more of the vaccine for us next year," said Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) chief <a href="https://tass.com/world/1236777/amp">Kirill Dmitriev</a>. One of the manufacturers is Hetero Biopharma, which <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/hetero-drugs-to-produce-over-100-million-doses-year-of-sputnik-v-vaccine-11606459369285.html">announced</a> its deal with the RDIF to make more than 100 million doses of the vaccine in November, earlier this year. Dmitriev did not disclose who the three new vendors are. It’s possible that Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories may be roped in since it is already conducting the clinical trials of Sputnik V in India and will also distribute doses, once approval comes in from the DCGA. So far, only three COVID-19 vaccines from Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech and homegrown pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech, have sought approval for emergency use in the coming weeks. Sputnik V may not be in the running but according to the <a href="https://twitter.com/RusEmbIndia/status/1339813294647902208">Russian Embassy</a>, testing of the first samples of the vaccine that were produced in India is already underway. In trials done outside the country, the Russian vaccine has been found to be more than 91% effective. Like Oxford-AstraZeneca, Stupink V can survive at refrigerated temperatures of between two to five degrees Celsius, which gives it an edge over its competitors.
