<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tinyowl&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TinyOwl</a>, the online <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=food+ordering+apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">food ordering</a> firm, has halted its operations in all Indian cities besides Mumbai. In Mumbai also, it will be available in select areas. 
 <keyword id="3601251" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TinyOwl">TinyOwl</keyword>, in its official blog, stated that it was temporarily closed for service improvement. “We are committed to return with an even better product for you in the near future,” the blog stated. 
 
The Mumbai-based platform operates in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Nagpur, Lucknow and Chandigarh. 
 
Recently, reportedly, TinyOwl was in news over its merger with hyperlocal logistics player Roadrunnr in an all-stock deal. 
 In the short term, TinyOwl will continue to operate its app in localities where order volumes are high, and phase out eventually to the new brand identity "<keyword id="3354183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Runnr">Runnr</keyword>," a top executive had told ET. Runnr is expected to make its debut in coming weeks in Mumbai.

TinyOwl temporarily closes operations in all cities, only open in Mumbai

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IITs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institutes of Technology</a> (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>) are going to convene a meeting to decide the future course of action for e-<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ecommerce&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">commerce</a> companies and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startups&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startups</a> during placement season. 
 
After the IIM-A and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a> fiasco, heads of placement committees across all IITs are going to build a strategy for startups and decide what slots will be given to them and they will also decide on which startups to call.

"Our AIPC (all-IITs placement committee) meeting was scheduled for October. But we have to convene this out-of-turn meeting in light of recent developments," Professor Kaustabha Mohanty, convenor of the panel, told ET. 
 After <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, many startups such as PepperTap, Home Shopping, <keyword id="3354183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Runnr">Runnr</keyword>, Zimply, etc also deferred the joining dates of the recruits. 
 
"Flipkart is a bellwether client of the current era of ecommerce companies. What Hindustan Unilever is to FMCG and what Infosys was to IT services, Flipkart is to ecommerce. I do believe the brand is already affected by this furore. What's worse is that it is not Flipkart alone, but the entire industry of ecommerce and the startup world that bears the brunt of this image drubbing. It's temporary for sure and life will go on, but the scar is left behind for sure," Brand strategy expert Harish Bijoor, CEO of Harish Bijoor Consults, told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, reportedly, IITs have asked new recruits to explore other options too.

IITs to decide on which startup to call and reject during placements amid Flipkart fiasco

<ul><li>Indian <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword> platform, <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword>, is set to enter into drone-delivery in India with the acquisition of a Lucknow-based startup, <keyword id="6576859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TechEagle">TechEagle</keyword> Innovation. </li><li>Zomato will become the first in food delivery space to bring <keyword id="2061285" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-delivery">drone delivery</keyword> services in India. </li><li>The move is aimed at helping the company create a hub-to-hub delivery network with the help of hybrid multi-rotor <keyword id="94769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="drones">drones</keyword>.</li></ul><keyword id="2066292" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-food-ordering">Online food ordering</keyword> app, Zomato, plans to bring drone-delivery for its customers, buying TechEagle Innovations, an Indian startup that makes custom drones. According to the company, the move is aimed at helping the company create a “hub-to-hub delivery network with the help of hybrid multi-rotor drones,” Zomato said in a press release. Food delivery forms a big part of the company’s business contributing over 65% of its total revenue. Two months ago, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), allowed commercial use of drones. This makes the food delivery unicorn, Zomato, first food delivery platform to enter drone-delivery. The startup currently delivers 22 million orders a month. “We are currently at the early stage of aerial innovations and are taking baby steps towards building a tomorrow wherein users can expect a drone to deliver the food they ordered online.”, said Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato in the release. Goyal added that the company is currently focused on designing multi-rotor drones that can pick up a payload under five kilogram and the related delivery routes that will reduce the last mile delivery leg. “We believe that robots powering the last mile delivery is an inevitable part of the future and hence is going to be a significant area of investment for us,” Goyal said. Other firms such as Domino’s, Amazon and Uber have also eyed drone-delivery systems. Earlier, Amazon <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/eyeing-drone-delivery-zomato-buys-techeagle/1404897/">reportedly</a> announced that it will develop drones focused on delivery. Zomato is quickly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-food-delivery-unicorn-zomato-to-expand-footprint-to-30-more-cities/articleshow/66915630.cms">expanding its footprint</a> in India, even into smaller cities. The company recently said it will soon have operations in over 100 small cities in India. It has also been boosting its capacity to improve last-mile delivery. India’s food delivery unicorn Zomato wants to bring drone-based food delivery with its latest acquisition

The adage ‘you are the company you keep’ is true in every sense. When surrounded by a bunch of motivated and talented entrepreneurs, you are bound to get ideas and have an itch to start your own venture. 
 Something of this sort happened at <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> as most of the people who left Flipkart are now entrepreneurs. 
 
Flipkart became a launchpad for many startups. Ex-Flipsters such as Advaith Mohan, Ankit Nagori, Preeti Jain, etc, have their own startups. Mohan was heading a four-member search engine marketing team at Flipkart and now owns Wagr, a startup that makes wearable for dogs to make pet pooches easier. Jain founded logistics company <keyword id="3635959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="inlogg">InLogg</keyword>. 
 
"There was a hunger in people (at Flipkart) to learn more, much faster. There wasn't anyone who was just comfortable with the status quo," Mohan told ET. 
 
Likewise, Ankit Nagori, former chief business officer, co-founded fitness startup CureFit, Akshay Lal started Playment, Arpit Dave co-founded food Runnr. 
 
Working at Flipkart gave these bright minds exposure and around 50 former employees now have startups. 
 "We are a very, very meritocratic organisation and we give opportunities to people on merit and not based on their age or tenure. This gives a lot of exposure to some people who rise to the challenge they are given and then they want to do more," <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, executive chairman of Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“People saw tough times and good times together and that is what held them together for a very long time, after which they started thinking of other opportunities," Nagori told ET. 
 
Desire for growth and right market opportunities also gave employees to start their own venture and take that sort of risk. 
 
Robert Siegel, lecturer in management at Stanford Graduate School of Business, told ET, "When cultures become too constrained or restrictive of innovation, such that individuals are not getting personal growth or challenges, and/or a firm is not taking advantage of potential market opportunities due to existing businesses, this is when individuals seek to start their own companies. It is usually due to a combination of individual desire and seeing a market opportunity." 
 
Meanwhile, it is bound a company will feel disappointed when a high performing employee at a top level exits. 
 
Bansal said, “It is a bit disappointing but at some level it's a great validation for the company culture if some of these people go out and become successful at their ventures. In some instances, the company has tried retaining employees but hasn't been successful. If it thought an idea could be implemented within Flipkart, it has made offers, but again, largely we have not been very successful with such attempts," said Bansal.

As the festive season kicks off on Monday with big sales promotions, firms which provide last-mile services to ecommerce sites are encouraging their employees to go the extra mile. On offer are silver coins, cash, gift vouchers, gadgets, refurbished homes and the chance to upgrade skills to take on higher-level roles.
 

	These firms include Ola, delivery agencies such as Gojavas and Roadrunnr, and staffing firms such as Quess Corp and TeamLease.
 

	Wiser after the surge in business last year took them by surprise, companies want to make sure they'll be able to handle the extra load this time around.
 

	And a crucial aspect of that is motivating those at the end of the chain. "Compared to last year, when some of these sales saw a great deal of chaos, this time the level of preparedness on the part of the companies is much better," Rituparna Chakraborty, cofounder and senior vice-president, Team-Lease Services, a recruitment agency, told ET. "This in turn will also lead to people performing better and earning more." For example, a delivery person in Bengaluru earning a monthly salary of Rs 12,000 can boost that by 50-60% through incentives, Chakraborty said.
 

	Ola said incentives will help ensure that clients can get cabs when they want. "These initiatives motivate drivers to be more available on the platform during the festive season and will help us bridge the demand-supply gap," said Anand Subramanian, senior director, marketing communications.
 Hyperlocal delivery company Roadrunnr's best staff will get silver coins daily. Weekly incentives include kitchenware and electronic gadgets. The company's clients include <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and Myntra. The top 10-15 Runnrs, as they are called, will also be trained in soft skills, spoken English and computers to help them in career advancement, said Aneek Mukherjee, director, Roadrunnr. <keyword id="103483" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raj-Kumar">Raj Kumar</keyword>, 22, hopes he can be one of the winners at Roadrunnr. During the festive season, the number of orders can double to 30 on a weekday compared with 14-15 on regular days and about 20 on the weekend, he said. One of the top performers at his branch in Bengaluru, he said, "These initiatives make all the extra trips worth it." While India's online retail market is expected to grow to around $50 billion by 2020 from $4 billion at the end of 2014, according to industry estimates, competition among the top ecommerce sites such as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, Amazon and Snapdeal will be at full pitch. And with online sellers focusing more on margins rather than discounts, companies will need to work harder on service. 

	They also need to make sure rivals don't poach their people. "Retention is the biggest challenge since the environment is tight. Everyone from old players to the new is fighting for a share," said Guruprasad Srinivasan, Quess Corp's CEO for people and services. The company provides delivery agents for the top ecommerce companies — staffing has surged to 20,000 from 3,500 in a year. Srinivasan said most ecommerce companies are paying bonuses and incentives this time round. Riders are also crucial for companies such as Faasos, which delivers restaurant orders placed on its website.
