<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NewsCred</span></p><p class="caption">NewsCred cofounder and CEO Shafqat Islam.</p></div><p></p></div></div>NewsCred, a content marketing software platform that allows brands to plan and measure their content campaigns and license relevant articles from the likes of The Guardian, The Financial Times, and the BBC, has just raised another multi-million dollar funding round, which it says demonstrates that "content marketing" is swiftly moving up the agenda in terms of marketers' priorities.</p><p>The $42 million Series D growth equity funding brings the total funding in NewsCred to date up to $88.8 million. This round is being led by FTV Capital. Liron Gitig, FTV Capital partner, will also join NewsCred's board of directors.</p><p>NewsCred - an eight-year-old company that has offices in New York, London, and Dhaka - says in a press release that it will use the investment to grow its UK and European operations.</p><p>Shafqat Islam, NewCred CEO and cofounder, told Business Insider the size of this round - which is almost bigger than its total funding to date - shows how content marketing has grown beyond a small marketing channel. "Content marketing is becoming marketing," he said.</p><p>Content marketing is hard to define. It's everything from blog posts, to videos, to licensed articles from news outlets. Some people in the marketing industry argue "content marketing" is simply everything a brand does to communicate with its customers. But others define content marketing as a channel in its own right. Market research company PQ Media predicts <a href="https://www.marketingmag.com.au/news-c/content-marketing-will-300-billion-industry-2019/">content marketing will become a $313 billion industry by 2019.</a></p><p>Islam said: "As the market has matured, we used to sell into people who ran content marketing divisions, or were the content editor, or were social media marketers. The last 18 months it has become CMOs who have realized content is a much more strategic and foundational part of what they do. You ask CMOs unaided 'what are your top three priorities?' everyone will put content in the top three."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NewsCred</span></p><p class="caption">Funding in content marketing companies is on the rise, according to NewsCred's research.</p></div><p></p></div></div>That puts martech (marketing tech) companies like NewsCred in a strong position when it comes to attracting the attention of VCs. And that comes at a time when <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2014/06/02/why-ad-tech-stocks-are-going-south/">ad tech companies have been taking a beating on the public markets.</a></p><p>Islam said: "VCs will not touch the ad tech market with a 10-foot pole, and a lot of ad tech companies are repositioning themselves right now - some as martech or some as SaaS [software as a service] - to try to get funding."</p><p>Back in June, Menlo Partners managing director Venky Ganesan concurred with this view, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/cmo/2015/06/10/ad-tech-firms-find-venture-capital-funding-is-running-dry/">telling The Wall Street Journal</a>: "[Investment has] almost evaporated. These companies are struggling to even get meetings."</p><p>That said, there have been a couple of major ad tech funding rounds recently: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/adtech-company-radiumone-raises-54-million-in-equity-and-debt-2015-6">RadiumOne raising $54 million</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tubemogul-raises-829-million-in-secondary-market-offering-2015-6">TubeMogul raising $83 million</a>, both in June.</p><h2>Content is "immune" from ad blocking</h2><p>Ad sellers are also battling right now with the rise of ad blocking. Almost 200 million people worldwide use ad blocking software on a monthly basis, up 41% year-over-year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pagefair-and-adobe-2015-ad-blocking-report-2015-8">according to a report from Adobe and PageFair.</a></p><p>Islam thinks the rise of ad blocking is directly correlated with the rise of content marketing.</p><p>"Logistically, from a purely tech point of view, [because content marketing is loaded in the same payload as the actual organic content on a page] it makes us immune and bullet-proof to ad blockers," Islam said. "But there's something bigger going on. All marketing is suffering. <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">Advertising</keyword> has become an enemy of the people. People say it's terrible, disruptive, interruptive, and hasn't seen any innovation in the last 20 to 30-years."</p><p>Content, on the other hand, is relevant, interesting and can be measured for performance than display ads because humans share content with their friends online, whereas non-human bots can "click" on ads, according to Islam.</p><p>Litron Gitig, FTV Capital partner, said in a statement: "The marketing landscape is converging and content is at the core. Quality content is crucial for building brands and driving sales. Today, customers engage with about a dozen items of content before making a purchase, NewsCred provides the best solution and has already taken great strides at redefining how the modern marketer can successfully navigate the complexities in this rapidly evolving space. NewsCred's CEO says its new funding shows how content marketing 'is becoming marketing'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Playbuzz</span></p><p class="caption">Shaul Omert, founder and CEO of Playbuzz.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Playbuzz, a publishing platform which specializes in lists, quizzes, and polls, just scored $15 million in its latest round of funding led by Saban Ventures, with participation from The Walt Disney Company.</p><p>Playbuzz generates viral content created by a combination of its <a href="https://publishers.playbuzz.com/about/">1 billion users </a>and its network of more than <a href="https://publishers.playbuzz.com/about/">40,000 digital publishers</a>, including: USA Today, The Daily MTV, Yahoo, and AOL.</p><p>The Israeli tech company plans to use the investment to enhance its platform and expand its sponsored content business, it said in a press release.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/interview-with-playbuzz-ceo-shaul-omert-2015-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">Business Insider interviewed founder and CEO Shaul Olmert last year</a> after Playbuzz raised its previous round of funding - its $16 million Series B - where he revealed his ambition to make Playbuzz the YouTube of "interactive, high engagement experiences."</p><p>Olmert said in the press release announcing the latest investment: "The support of global leaders in media, such as Saban and Disney, will enable us to expand both our editorial reach and sponsored content business."</p><p>83North, Carmel Ventures and FirstTime Ventures also participated in the round. Viral publisher Playbuzz just raised $15 million from investors including Disney

Gonzalez/AP</span></p><p class="caption">HERB is making a big bet on digital.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Canadian cannabis media company <a href="http://herb.co/">HERB</a> closed a $4.1 million seed round Tuesday in a bid to expand to the US and ramp up production of video content.</p><p>"<span>This is a monumental moment for HERB and a testament to the shift of public view on the cannabis industry," Herb CEO Matt Gray said in a statement. </span></p><p><span>"As we usher in a new and diverse demographic of cannabis consumers, investors are seeing the value in the cannabis industry and importance of having a reliable technology platform to educate and inform consumers," Gray added.</span></p><p><span>HERB, based in Toronto, Canada, will use the round to expand to Los Angeles and New York City, as well as build out new studios to enhance their offering of video content online.</span></p><p><span>The 27-year-old Gray acquired HERB in 2015 - when it was called The Stoner's Cookbook - and rebranded it as a digital media company specifically for the cannabis industry, mixing original how-to videos with hard <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> and profiles. The company boasts 5.3 million unique visitors per month, and 2 billion organic video views annually as of June, according to Tubular Labs. </span></p><p><span>Gray previously told Business Insider that he sought to base HERB's growth strategy around video views like many other digital publications, as Facebook has pushed publishers to focus on video.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">A participant practices rolling a joint at the Cannabis Carnivalus 4/20 event in Seattle.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>The round was led by media veterans <span>Lerer Hippeau Ventures, along with Slow Ventures, Michael Lazerow, and hall-of-fame quarterback Joe Montana's Liquid 2 Ventures.</span></p><p><span>"During our research into the cannabis industry, it became clear to both myself and our team at Liquid 2 Ventures that HERB was the most professionally run business for relevant, informative, cannabis content," Montana said in a release announcing the round.</span></p><p><span>"There was a void in the marketplace and HERB filled it," Eric Hippeau, managing partner of Lerer Hippeau Ventures said. Cannabis media company HERB raises millions to expand to NYC and LA

<ul class="summary-list"><li><p>EdTech startup TinyTap raised $8.5 million for staff expansion and product development, Insider has learned.</p></li><li>The Animoca Brands' subsidiary is backed in the latest round by firms including Sequoia China and Polygon.</li></ul><p>TinyTap, an educational technology startup and Animoca Brands' subsidiary, has secured an $8.5 million funding round, Insider has learned.</p><p>The Tel Aviv-based EdTech firm will use the funding for staff expansion and product development. </p><p>Sequoia China, Shima Capital, Polygon, Liberty City Ventures, Kingsway Capital, and GameFi Ventures are among the backers for the company's latest funding round. </p><p>Founded in 2012, TinyTap offers a platform for user-generated educational content, dubbing itself as "the world's largest library of games by teachers." Once acquired by investing giant Animoca last year, the startup began doubling down on its Web3 efforts.</p><p>TinyTap began incorporating blockchain technology into its services with more tokenized content via <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/tinytaps-first-publisher-nfts-sold-out-generating-138-926-eth-us228-000-that-is-shared-with-6-teachers-301670163.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">non-fungible token</a> collections. Animoca <a href="https://venturebeat.com/games/animoca-brands-acquires-most-of-educational-user-generated-content-firm-tinytap-for-38-9m/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paid $38.8 million</a> in June for an 80.45% stake in TinyTap.</p><p>Animoca cofounder Yat Siu says NFTs make it possible for teachers to "better generate equity from their work and link up with co-publishers who can handle the promotion of their courses, all while offering students enhanced learning materials." </p><p>"Teachers and educators are among the most important content creators and contributors in society, and yet their wages typically do not reflect their critical importance," Siu said in a statement. "This is why we're incredibly excited at the Web3 opportunities that TinyTap is exploring in the field of education."</p><p>The startup raised their latest round as venture capital investments became harder to come by. VCs and investment firms have pulled back as the technology sector faces economic headwinds amid a higher interest rate environment, looming recession, and bank turmoil stemming from last month's fall of Silicon Valley Bank.</p><p>While raising capital last year, TinyTap cofounder Yogev Shelly told Insider that the round took longer to close because of fallout and uncertainty in the crypto sector as well. </p><p>"We started in October and within a month reached 80% of what we aimed for in the round," Shelly, who is also CEO, told Insider. "By November some big investors who had soft committed for a large part of the funding had to fold due to certain fallout and rising uncertainty. Jaunt just raised $65 million from big investors like Disney to go all in on virtual reality

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sourcepoint</span></p><p class="caption">Ben Barokas, Sourcepoint co-founder and CEO.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Sourcepoint, the company probably best known for its ad blocker blocker technology, has raised a $16 million Series B funding round.</p><p>The company describes itself as a "content compensation platform" that helps publishers claw back money lost to ad blockers by providing users with other ways to compensate publishers - such as subscriptions or one-off payments - rather than seeing ads.</p><p>In a press release, Sourcepoint's CEO Ben Barokas says this year the company wants to help move the publishing industry from simply being aware of different compensation models to actually encouraging more consumers to pay.</p><p>Sourcepoint will use the investment to develop a product it is calling the "Spotify for digital content" - a platform where users make a one-off payment to consume content across a range of publishers.</p><p>The company plans to expand on its existing product offering for publishers, increasing the amount of tools they can use to communicate with users to encourage them to make a transaction - in the form of payment, agreeing to view <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>, or offering over data like an email address - in order to view content.</p><p>Sourcepoint's clients include AOL, Dennis Publishing, and Gruner &amp; Jahr.</p><p>Barokas said:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"We're entering an interesting period for the digital media and advertising industry - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/brexit-tech-industry-consequences-hiring-regulation-vc-ip-2016-5">with the European GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) due to come into force in 2018</a>, data compliance, open communications, and transparency are top of mind for publishers. It will soon be required to have conversations with audiences about how and why their data is used; not only will that clarify how an individual's data is used, it also provides a key moment for publishers to underline the value exchange of how content is traditionally funded and engage with audiences on choices around content compensation." </p><p>The $16 million Series B round was led by London-based technology investment company Northzone. It also included participation from existing investors Accel Partners, Greycroft Partners, Spark Capital, and Foundry Group. It brings Sourcepoint's total investment to date up to $26 million.</p><p>Northzone general partner, Pär-Jörgen Pärson, will join Sourcepoint's board as part of the transaction. He also sits on Spotify's board.</p><p>Pärson said: "We are delighted to support Sourcepoint as it continues to innovate within the online publishing industry, providing solutions to revolutionise an individual's experience of online content consumption. Anti-ad blocking company Sourcepoint has raised another $16 million

In addition to the company's full time staff, the site relies on 300 freelance contributors to largely write articles about the best food, sights, and shopping in their local neighborhoods. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Tuesday, the company announced an additional $80 million in funding in its series B round led by Dutch venture firm <span>PPF Group, which<a href="https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/26/%E2%80%8Bculture-trip/"> also led the company's $20 million series A in 2016</a>. The money will help the fast-growing site expand even more quickly.</span></span></p><p>Culture Trip CEO and founder Kris Naudts says his company's fast-growing fleet of freelancers is his company's competitive edge, and the reason why it's been able to move so quickly. </p><p>"We commission content out of house, so we have relatively low overhead,"  Naudts said."That's the bit that set us apart -- the quality at scale."</p><p>Another factor, said Naudts, is the site's pliable formatting: the site delivers up content in a mix of mediums, ranging from articles to videos to illustrations.</p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">We're not a news or journalist outlet that suddenly goes visual," said Naudts. Tiger Woods shot his lowest round since his return to golf - and he's in position to get his first win since 2013

<p>Venture capital firm Greycroft Ventures led the round and existing Sulia investor FirstMark Capital participated.</p>
<p>In a release, Sulia says 10 million individuals will see content produced by the site this month – up from zero 18 months ago, when the network launched.</p>
<p>Sulia does not disclose how many account holders it currently has. Much of Sulia's content is actually automatically pulled from other social publishing platforms, like Twitter and Tumblr.</p>
<p>Sulia is the creation of Jonathan Glick.</p>
<p>Glick is a high-profile figure in the New York tech scene thanks to a successful career that started at AOL, back when it was still a young company, and includes a stop the New York Times. Glick made a lot of money as the number two guy at "expert network" GLG. </p>
<p>(Glick is also married to one of New York's most impressive angel investors, former IAC M&amp;A boss and Allen &amp; Co partner Shana Fisher of Highline Ventures.)</p>
<p>Glick's theory for Sulia is that users would rather see their social content organized into channels instead of getting it in a purely chronological order the way they do through Twitter, or through some mysterious algorithm they way they do on Facebook.</p>
<p>Glick also believes advertisers will pay more to stick an ad on a channel with content is relevant to their product than in the middle of a bunch of social updates that might have to do with anything.</p>
<p>Toward that end, Sulia recently launched its first ad product, called "Featured Posts." </p>

Sulia, A New York Startup Attempting To Build A Better Twitter, Now Has 10 Million Visitors And Another ~$5 Million In The Bank

Part of the company's first round, raised about year and a half ago, came from FirstMark, known for making contrarian bets. Content marketing's not contrarian anymore. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Mayfield Fund was a principal investor in Marketo, a marketing automation company which appears to be headed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marketo-hot-enterprise-ipo-candidate-2012-6">towards an IPO</a>. Rajeev Batra, a partner at the fund who is on Marketo's board will be joining NewsCred's board as well. </span></p>
<p class="p1">Greycroft was a large investor in Buddy Media, which recently sold to Salesforce for $689 million. These are both funds that made large and successful bets on digital marketing companies. And now they're looking to content marketing. </p>
<p class="p1">When marketers are spending 25 to 30 percent of their budgets on content, investors start to perk up. According to Islam, the round only took two to three weeks to put together, which speaks to investor's eagerness. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>"Social publishing has the Buddy Medias of the world and that has already developed. There's media monitoring and that's already developed. Email is already developed and there's big players. For marketing automation, there's Marketing and Eloqua," Islam says. "Content marketing, it was still wide open for the taking, and I guess investors wanted to bet on the one that they thought would lead them and take that market. " </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And as exciting as bringing The New York Times on board is from a content perspective, the symbolism might mean even more. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>"This deal was years in the making," Islam said. "And I think its a big statement that content marketing as a category has really evolved when large and mainstream publishers, and the New York Times is among the largest most reputable ones, are actually looking at software partners like NewsCred to help them figure out that space." </span></p>
<p class="p1">It's the difference between just adding another syndication partner, and finding a partner that can help them access an entirely new and unfamiliar market. </p>
<p class="p1">Media's a difficult business to be in, and even companies as well regarded as The New York Times need to figure out digital models that are sustainable in the long run. Figuring out new ways to distribute and make money off their content is a large part of that.</p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Our investors are basically saying that 'we believe in premium content,' Islam says. "This money, I almost feel like we raised it on behalf of the content partners we work with, because it will allow all of us together to reach new audiences and generate new revenue." </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>As for what they'll do with the funding, the company wants to grow internationally, Islam says. While content marketing is pretty evolved in the US, the UK, Europe, and Japan are about year behind. And so, to grow in those markets, the company needs to license content in every language. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The second part is the move towards integrating with other marketing and software tools to make NewsCred's content "ubiquitous in the entire marketing ecosystem" so its as easy as possible for brands to do interesting and innovative things with what the company provides.</span></p>
<p class="p1">Some argue that using content in this way somehow devalues it or renders it inauthentic. If that's the case, people simply ignore it, and companies won't see results. And if companies are misleading about where content comes from, they're likely to see significant backlash. </p>
<p class="p1">The amount companies are spending makes the case that if used carefully, content marketing has significant potential, as does the eagerness of media companies to get involved.  </p>

After that, the company plans to bring other stories from its users and forums to life. </p><p>Reddit began to venture into original content with a <a href="http://www.redditblog.com/2015/01/upvoted-reddit-podcast-for-all-stories.html">podcast</a> and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/newsletter">newsletter</a>, but Reddit Video is an even bigger step into producing its own content</p><p>The move to video could be part of a move to tap into more lucrative advertising formats. After raising a $50 million funding round and a number of management shake-ups last year, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/6/8555869/reddit-video-create-original-content">The Verge reports that Reddit started to think about monetising its site through original content</a>. Reddit is going to start creating original videos

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Brad Barket/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Ev Williams</p></div><p></p></div></div>Medium, the blogging platform founded by Twitter cofounder Ev Williams, just raised a <span>$57 million round, led by Andreessen Horowitz<span> with "significant participation" from </span><span>Google Ventures and Greylock Partners</span>, the company <a href="https://medium.com/@andydoyle/medium-s-new-funding-round-48437c641e06">announced in a blog post Monday</a>.</span></p><p><span>Sources tell Recode that the new funding values Medium at <a href="http://recode.net/2015/09/28/ev-williams-medium-raises-57-million-for-the-best-stories-and-ideas-on-the-internet/">$400 million</a>. </span></p><p><span>Previously, Medium had <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/medium">raised $25 million</a> in a round led by Greylock Partners.</span></p><p><span>Andy Doyle, Medium's head of operations, says in the company's blog post that 20,000 people are using Medium weekly. Doyle <a href="http://recode.net/2015/09/28/ev-williams-medium-raises-57-million-for-the-best-stories-and-ideas-on-the-internet/">told Recode</a> that that number is 4 times higher than last year. Doyle's post doesn't discuss traffic, or other metrics that may give a sense of Medium's health as a publisher. We do know, though, that Medium said it received <a href="http://www.wired.com/2015/04/ev-williams-rules-quality-content-clickbait-age/">25 million monthly unique visitors</a> as of May.</span> </p><p><span>"</span>At Medium we operate in a fundamentally different way," Doyle says in his blog post. "We don't focus on pageviews, unique visitors, or click metrics. We don't litter the platform with ads that are low quality, high clutter." </p><p>In terms of revenue, Medium hasn't disclosed much. <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/roberthof/2015/09/09/mediums-evan-williams-to-publishers-your-website-is-toast/">In an interview with John Battelle earlier this month</a>, Williams said Medium was starting to look at explore options to generate revenue, such as paywalls and branded content.</p><p>This summer, Medium - which has become known for tech and culture blogs like Matter, Backchannel, The Nib, and The Message - announced <a href="https://medium.com/the-story/medium-is-not-a-publishing-tool-4c3c63fa41d2">a change in its direction</a>, moving away from its focus on longform content.</p><p class="p1">Structural shifts inside Medium were rampant, Business Insider learned earlier this year. This applied not only in editorial practice but in management as well. <span>Medium told BI this the changes weren't considered a pivot or a shakeup in any sense of the word; it was just the evolution of the three-year-old blogging project. </span></p><p class="p1"><span>When asked about the changes, Edward Lichty Medium's </span><span>Head of Corporate Development and Strategy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/medium-budget-cuts-and-restructuring-2015-6">wrote to Business Insider</a></span><span>: "All of our content team, including people working on Matter and other publications, will be part of the effort to help drive conversation on Medium.
