Interestingly, as much as 65-75% of the users that are hooked onto these primarily user generated content (UGC) platforms, are from Tier 2+ cities. “A sizable user base of these (home grown) platforms reside in Tier 2+ and rural regions and over 100 million users of these platforms transact online,” Redseer said. The trigger for the growth of home grown apps in India, is the banning of TikTok that made them grow. “Over 58% of the survey respondents reported an increase in their SFV usage over the past six months, indicating significant user satisfaction with these platforms,” the report added. High-quality creator base, localised and regional content the report says adding that platforms too launched creator programs, fostered collaborations with celebrities, and attracted and onboarded local talent. An analysis of real-time feed data (around 1,20,000 videos per year) indicates that the original content percentage has increased significantly with over 99% original content on every refresh during Jan-Aug 2023 compared to 92% original content in 2022, Redseer says. TikTok alternatives⁠— reviews of the top three short video apps on Google Play Store

Indian short-video making apps like <keyword id="6393600" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Josh">Josh</keyword>, <keyword id="8678883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="moj">Moj</keyword>, <keyword id="9555198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MX-TakaTak">MX Takatak</keyword> and <keyword id="2368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Roposo">Roposo</keyword> have brought back 97 per cent of TikTok user base in the country onto their platforms, largely from small cities and towns, a new report showed on Thursday. Indian short-form apps have also successfully retained 67 per cent of the TikTok era users and have onboarded around 30-35 per cent new users over the past year. This has been a result of increased supplier push and aggressive marketing by platforms, according to the latest report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer Consulting. "Daily active users (DAUs) increased upto 97 per cent of June 2020 levels as a result of aggressive marketing and user acquisition by platforms. However, the time spent on the other hand has gradually increased, reaching 55 per cent of June 2020 levels," the report mentioned. Josh leads both on influencer and user-end driven by strong performance in the Hindi belt and Tier-2+ cities. Moj, has been a strong gainer across consumer and business metrics, when compared to the last quarter. "On the other hand, Roposo has shown strong performance in Tier-1 cities compared to the smaller ones," said the report. MX <keyword id="7638068" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Takatak">Takatak</keyword> lead in the net promoter score (NPS) in the metro cities. The platform has held challenges and hashtag events similar to TikTok, to gain market share. Overall, 60-62 per cent of the shortform users are from tier 2+ cities. While Indian platforms have come a long way in the last few months, they have more scope to improve their content quality and product experience. The study shows that 75 per cent current short-form video users will likely stick to these domestic apps and are unlikely to switch back to Chinese apps even if the ban was lifted. "In less than one year post-Tik Tok ban, Indian platforms have shown a strong V-shaped recovery, bouncing back to 100 per cent of pre ban daily user base," said Ujjwal Chadhury, associate partner at RedSeer Consulting. But the job is far from done. "The players still have to reach the global and cross sector benchmarks on engagement and retention- which will further grow the monetisation potential for the entire ecosystem," Chadhury added. With strong network effects, the user base is growing fast, fuelling ecosystem growth, leading to a large monetisation potential for both influencers and platforms. Elite influencers with more than 10 million followers have a monthly earning of around $20,000-40,000. "Influencers with 1 million followers can earn upto $1000-2.500 while budding creators with less than 1 million followers can earn $40-200," the report said. <ul><li>YouTuber <keyword id="8714903" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="technical-guruji">Technical Guruji</keyword> told Business Insider that the ban on TikTok was “long overdue,” after the Indian government announced the full list of 59 Chinese apps that will no longer be allowed to operate in the country.</li><li>TikTok influencers <keyword id="3206714" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paras-Tomar">Paras Tomar</keyword> and <keyword id="1317515" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadil-Khan">Aadil Khan</keyword> believe that even though TikTok is banned, brands will follow the influencer wherever they may go.</li><li>This isn’t the first time that TikTok has been banned in India and Tomar holds out hope that it will make a return after clearing things up with the government.</li></ul>The ByteDance-owned short video streaming app TikTok took India by storm when it launched in 2018 and it’s no stranger to being banned. Last year, the Madras High Court had the app banned for ‘encouraging pornography’ yet TikTok made its way back. “We saw it coming,” Paras Tomar, a TikTok influencer with over 3 million followers, told Business Insider. He says the anti-China sentiment was already visible with fans questioning why he was still creating videos on TikTok despite it being a Chinese app. This time around TikTok has gotten caught in political crossfire as tensions between India and China continue to escalate along the border. While 30% of users and 15% of its revenue may come from India, its the influencers on the platform that have a bigger burden to bear. To Tiktok or not to TikTok Love it or hate it, there’s no denying TikTok’s popularity. Bridging the digital divide was the prime driver of TikTok’s success in India. From January 2018 to August 2019, it was able to capture 30% of India’s smartphone users, according to data provided by Delhi-based market intelligence firm KalaGato. “Well, I think this was long overdue, I feel happy that finally, the Government took the right step in this direction,” said YouTuber Technical Guruji. However, not everyone is as amped about the change. “For actors, this just one thing we do. A lot of others actually left their jobs and stuff to do this. This is their income,” empathised Tomar. Being an influencer is a full-time job, from creating content to networking — investing time in a platform like TikTok does have an opportunity cost. But provided you have made a name for yourself on the platform and have the talent to back it up — India’s youth won’t find it difficult to move to another platform and generate employment, according to Aadil Khan, TikToker and choreographer with 2.8 million followers. ‘Made-in-India’ alternatives Following the ban of TikTok, Indian app alternatives saw a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/tiktok-ban-in-india-is-a-boon-for-rival-apps-chingari-bolo-indya-roposo-khabri-and-mitron/articleshow/76706001.cms">surge in the number of downloads</a>. <keyword id="40682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chingari">Chingari</keyword>, for instance, told Business Insider that the app was getting 100,000 downloads per hour. Others like Bolo, Indya, Khabri, and Roposo have also welcomed the ban in favour of an atmanirbhar — self-reliant — India. “Made in India apps will definitely gain momentum now, people are now addicted to the short term format. Wherever they find it, they are going to go on it,” said Khan. The catch is that, in comparison to TikTok, these Indian alternatives are still in their nascent stages. “Chingari is this new app so I tried to get a hold of it but the UI was so bad that it didn’t even let me create a username,” quipped Tomar after trying out the new platform. Khan believes it might be better with the government joins the bandwagon to create its own short-video format app where it can control the fact that no cringe content and “anything that goes against the country's peace and unity” isn’t uploaded. At the end of the day, it may not even be about shifting from one platform to the next. “I think we’ll all coexist on multiple platforms like we always have,” Tomar said. Will the brands follow? Brands need influencers just as much as influencers need brands. So wherever influencers may go next, brands are sure to follow. “Brands will move with them to other social media platforms. As long as you have created yourself an audience a genuine one, you will have them follow and love your content irrespective of the platform,” said Khan. However, what may take a hit is how much moolah an influencer can earn. “With two platforms, my cumulative reach becomes so much — that’s why we were charging a certain amount of money. Now the moment when you take one out of the two — and the bigger one of the two — it is going to take a hit,” explained Tomar. While Instagram and other social media platforms still exist, TikTok was — by far — the most active. “TikTok was very userfriendly, and for creators especially. Making content was easy, brands also approached you — they also pushed you. So, it was a very well-oiled machine so that everyone was happy with their roles,” said Tomar. He holds out hope that TikTok will make a comeback after it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/chinese-app-tiktok-says-it-will-meet-with-government-to-submit-clarifycations/articleshow/76703707.cms">talks to the Indian government</a>. The Chinese app said that it will be meeting with all the stakeholders to clarify any misnomers about data sharing abroad. “Until this is resolved, I’m not going to be on TikTok. Whether or not TikTok allows videos to be uploaded is secondary,” asserted Tomar. The Indian government banned popular Chinese apps like TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community and more to safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users. "This is a welcome move from the government against platforms that have had serious privacy, cyber security and national security risks. We expect the government to continue their support for the Indian startup ecosystem," Berges Malu, Director, Public Policy, ShareChat, told IANS. ShareChat is an Indian video creation app similar to short-video making app Tiktok. The app allows users to communicate and interact with other users on the platform. ShareChat currently serves more than 60 million monthly active users in 15 different Indian languages. Most of its active users hail from tier-2 and tier-3 cities (like TikTok), with the majority of them relying on 2G networks. Naveen Tewari, Founder and CEO, InMobi Group said that this is the digital 'Aatma Nirbhar' moment that most Indians have been rooting for. "As the number one top video app on the Google Play Store, Roposo is very well positioned to lead this movement. Roposo will continue to build on the trust and love that 55 million Indian users have placed in us," said Tewari. The government banned the Chinese apps after it received complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. "Banning Chinese apps is a great initiative to ensure privacy of the Indian users' data and to protect the country against the potential threat these apps pose to our national security," said Piyush, CEO &amp; Founder, Rooter. "The Indian technology ecosystem has come a long way in the last 5-6 years and is at par with the capabilities of any other startup ecosystem in the world," he added. <ul><li>The Chinese short video streaming app <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> was banned in India in June — the app’s largest international market. </li><li>Despite losing over 200 million of its users, TikTok continues to be the highest-grossing app worldwide, according to Sensor Tower’s monthly report. </li><li>This is partly due to more people using apps during the coronavirus pandemic and also because 89% of the app’s revenue comes from China. </li></ul>Despite losing its biggest overseas market, the Chinese short video sharing app TikTok continues to be the top-grossing non-game app in the world in July. <a href="https://sensortower.com/blog/top-grossing-apps-worldwide-july-2020">Sensor Tower’s</a> monthly report shows that TikTok hit $102.5 million in revenue — an 8.6 times increase in revenue over the same time last year. <div type="image" title="snapshot-1596616947742" msid="77369129" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;TikTok&amp;#39;s revenue over the last five months&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Even compared to a month ago, TikTok’s revenue has increased by $11.8 million. This may be because nearly 89% of the company’s revenue still comes from its home base in China. Indians can be a boost to any app’s user base but historically they haven’t known to be the biggest spenders. Another factor that may have surged TikTok's revenue is the overall online app market seeing a boost due to the coronavirus pandemic as more people stay at home. In the first half of 2020, Sensor Tower recorded a 23% jump in global app revenue as compared to last year — crossing $50 billion. TikTok was third on the list, following Tinder and YouTube, having generated $421 million across the Google Play Store and App Store. New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) The ban on 59 Chinese apps has given homegrown app developers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create world-class products across chat, short videos, and photo/video sharing segments and led by ShareChat, desi apps are now scouting for fresh finds to invest intelligently into scaling their platforms and handle the upcoming rush. In a country where nearly 300 million people are on Facebook, another 400 million on WhatsApp and over 120 million on Chinese app TikTok -- not to forget the millions who are hooked to Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat -- there has not been a single social media platform to date with its roots in India that has created headlines globally. The time is ripe to rise to the occasion and show that Indian programmers can build top-notch social media apps right here, without going to the US or other countries. The regional language social media platform ShareChat is changing the way in which the next billion users will interact on the internet. With over 1 billion monthly Whatsapp shares, users spend more than 25 minutes daily on the platform. ShareChat has a user base of over 60 million monthly active users spread across the country and available in 15 languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Kannada, Assamese, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri and Urdu. "It will also make users more vigilant in checking what permissions they have given to apps as smartphones store sensitive information," said Iqubal. Public is currently available in five Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and Telugu, and aims to have over 100 million users by the end of the year. Roposo is another leading homegrown short-video making app with more than 65 million downloads in the country. TikTok users, including influencers with huge fan followings, have started switching to Roposo in large numbers after the ban. "We have built Roposo as a clean and ethical platform. The unique idea of channels in Roposo provides every talented Indian with an opportunity to grow rapidly," said Mayank Bhangadia, co-founder of Roposo. Indians have rushed to download social app Chingari, a desi alternative to Chinese TikTok, which is witnessing nearly 1 lakh downloads and over 2 million views per hour since the government banned 59 Chinese apps over national security concerns. Already downloaded over 3 million times, the app which was founded by Bengaluru-based programmers Biswatma Nayak and Siddharth Gautam last year, was trending at the top spot on Google Play Store. "As Chingari is setting new benchmarks, a lot of investors are showing interest in our app. We are holding crucial discussions to get a good investor(s) on board so as to scale up our free-of-cost social platform," informed Nayak. Launched in October 2017, Khabri is another fastest-growing digital audio platform providing content in the regional language. "We urge Indian corporate leaders to come forward and reclaim the country's business ecosystem and consumers through supporting/investing in Indian startups," said Sandeep Singh, co-founder and president, Khabri. "Since the word spread that Indians now have a homegrown and more entertaining alternative to TikTok, we have been recording traffic beyond expectations on our app," said Nayak. With over 30 million downloads and 9 million monthly active users on its app, Trell has witnessed a 25 times growth within one year.
