<ul><li><keyword id="9139921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shemaroo-TV">Shemaroo TV</keyword>, the flagship Hindi GEC from the house of <keyword id="203890" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shemaroo-Entertainment">Shemaroo Entertainment</keyword>, is launching an original TV show titled ‘<keyword id="10809040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jurm-aur-jazbaat">Jurm aur Jazbaat</keyword>.’ </li><li>We caught up with <keyword id="207966" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiren-Gada">Hiren Gada</keyword>, CEO, Shemaroo Entertainment to understand how it was all put together, walked us through the channel's journey so far and future of FTA channels in India. </li></ul>Shemaroo Entertainment launched a Free-to-Air (FTA) channel last year in the midst of the lockdown, when businesses were coming to a standstill. A company that has effectively adopted to technological changes and macro economic disruptions since the early 1970s, Shemaroo has been smoothly sailing through all waves of changes. As the lockdown eased and the country slowly started limping towards normalcy, Shemaroo TV was burning the midnight oil to put together an original series for its audience. Now, it is all set to foray into original TV series with a crime show titled ‘Jurm aur Jazbaat.’ The general entertainment content on Hindi TV channels largely revolves around domestic issues, mythology, historical personalities or desi love stories. OTT audiences, on the other hand, are a fan of thriller films, sci-fi or crime shows. However, Shemaroo has taken the OTT route for its TV channel with the launch of its first crime-based TV show. In the recent past, even courtroom sagas have become a huge hit on OTT platforms: Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors, Nail Polish, Illegal season 1, Your Honour and The Verdict – State vs Nanavati (2019) are proof. On why the TV channel chose crime as its debut genre, Hiren Gada, CEO, Shemaroo Entertainment, said, “We did a market research to identify what is trending, what are the consumers watching, what they aren't, etc. So we finalised various categories to work with. After deep-diving into the market research we conducted, we realised that the crime genre has a very good connect with the Free-To-Air audiences. What also strongly came out was the fact that there is emotion behind every crime. So, to simplify the name, we called it Jurm aur Jazbaat. Once we decided the route we wanted to take, we worked with a couple of production houses in terms of creating pilots, ramping up and then going into the production part. Parallely, because this was our first fresh and original programming, we wanted to have a very strong mentor, who can connect with the audience, create a great viewing experience for them and that's how we zeroed in on <keyword id="6360486" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronit-Roy">Ronit Roy</keyword>.” Journey so far Since the inception of Shemaroo TV last year, the channel wanted to offer a mix of original content, licensed content and existing content. However, due to the nation-wide lockdown, the channel had to put a pause on its production like everyone else. It did not stop the entertainment house from launching a new channel. It wanted to lay a strong foundation before launching its original content. “We had to revamp our whole process for two reasons. One was logistically, we were not in a position to shoot at that time. And secondly, advertisers' spends had also reduced. So, we decided at that time to focus on our existing library as well as fresh creations and acquired shows from Star like Devon ke Dev Mahadev, Jeet hui parai, Shor from Sahara, and we had our own movies and shows. The focus at that time was to establish the channel in terms of viewership, distribution, primarily marketing, viewership, programming, consumer connect. Many other things and milestones which we wanted to achieve before we launch an original,” shared Gada. Present and future of FTA channels in India Currently, as per Gada, not more than two FTA channels are creating original content and Jurm aur Jazbaat will help the channel carve a niche for itself. While Shemaroo had also launched its Marathi channel, MarathiBana and a lot of learnings from that experience went into the launch of Shemaroo TV, the latter was rolled out while working from home. It launched unique initiatives to pull in more viewers. Overwhelmed with the response the channel has seen so far, Gada said, “Given the fact that we are a GEC less than nine months old, we have seen very good response and viewer traction. In fact, we've done many contests where we could gauge consumer participation. We received a lot of very good messages from our audiences and they showered us with love. That has helped build the overall viewership. And obviously, the team's hard work has paid off too.” It has also seen a good response from the top FTA advertisers. “I'm sure that a very strong connect with the core Shemaroo brand and being part of this ecosystem for decades, has played its strong part as a strong beautiful partner, given the challenge that overall advertiser revenue and spends have gone through, in the last year. We are part of that same trend but the fact that we have seen very good acceptance borne out by the fact that all the top spenders on the FTA space, most of them are already present on both our channels. We keep adding more brands and new categories as we move forward,” added Gada. This year, with the economy coming back on track, Shemaroo is expecting to see more advertisers on-board who cater to rural and Tier II and III audiences. Gada said, “With the economy back on track, and companies launching more and more products, good agriculture output with a good monsoon, the rural economy has done exceedingly well. With this, a lot more categories are now willing to participate on the FTA platform, because they are all seeing more consumption coming from these pockets. Over the next few years, as per capita income of the country grows, more and more categories of consumption will open up for these audiences. That will bring in many more categories into the FTA space. And I think that’s really the exciting part in the next three to five years. This is a segment which has been underserved as far as television is concerned and as far as products are concerned. In the next three to five years, this situation is bound to get corrected.” After measuring the response of its fresh content, Shemaroo is planning to launch more original content and simultaneously, keep acquiring popular series and films to be able to cater to a large audience. Sharing his plan for this year, Gada said, “We are going to take it one step at a time. We definitely have more originals lined up. The fact is that there's just two channels, which are offering fresh programming or original content. We are upping the game for ourselves at a certain level and that's going to be a continuous process for us, because that's how we plan to keep up our audiences loyal to us and keep coming back to us as we keep launching new offers for our viewers.”

A lot more categories are now willing to advertise on FTA channels to reach out to rural India: Hiren Gada, Shemaroo

Starring <keyword id="6360486" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ronit-Roy">Ronit Roy</keyword> and <keyword id="107583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pallavi-Kulkarni">Pallavi Kulkarni</keyword>, the show is called <keyword id="2572850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Itna-Karo-Na-Mujhe-Pyar">Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar</keyword>, and will be aired this November on <keyword id="6358540" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sony">Sony</keyword>, the same <keyword id="264938" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GEC">GEC</keyword> that profitably aired Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. 
 The show is about the relationship that an estranged couple continues to share because of their children. The protagonists, Nachiket Khanna and Ragini Patel, will be shown rediscovering their relationship during one of their daughter’s wedding, when they face each other after 15 years of alienation. While Ronit Roy’s character will be shown indifferent and insensitive towards his ex-wife, Pallavi Kulkarni’s character would be shown struggling between her feelings for her ex-husband and her current partner, the character most probably portrayed by Darshan Pandya. He was last seen as Vineet Raizada in another <keyword id="15107" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Balaji">Balaji</keyword> show Kya Huaa Tera Vaada. 
 
From the first look, the show looks promising and emotional, but as is the case with most of the Indian television shows, we wonder if this show too would fall for the age-old traps of leaps, plastic surgeries, and selective amnesia.

These days, he is seen playing a famous defence lawyer, KD Pathak, in Adaalat and his compensation amounts to Rs 1.25 lakh per day.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s long-standing girlfriend rose to fame after playing Archana in Pavitra Rishta. Ankita was being paid Rs 70,000 per day when she decided to take a break for three months. Buzz was that to bring her back on the show, her fee was hiked to Rs 1 lakh per episode. 
 
4. <keyword id="6358984" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sakshi-Tanwar">Sakshi Tanwar</keyword> 
One of the most coveted actresses on Indian television, Sakshi Kanwar has come a long way. It was the lead role of Parvati in Ekta Kapoor’s soap Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii that made her a household name. Then she topped the popularity chart by playing Priya in the popular show, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. Her chemistry with Ram Kapoor is the high point of the show. The actress takes home anything between Rs 70,000-1 lakh per day. And she shoots only 15 days in a month. 
 
5. Shivaji Satam 
He is the popular ACP Pradyuman from India’s longest running crime series CID. This popular Marathi actor, who is also seen playing supporting roles in Bollywood, is one of the A-listers when it comes to the TV industry. He earns around Rs 1 lakh per episode. 
 
6. Karan Singh Grover 
This hot hunk of Indian telly got a huge fan following after playing Dr Armaan Mallik in the TV serial Dill Mill Gayye. After that, he participated in a dance reality show and vanished from the scene. However, we saw him making a successful comeback with Qubool Hai. Buzz is that even after the break, the boy demanded Rs 80,000 per day, which he got, and today he is making Rs 20 lakh a month. 
 
7. Drashti Dhami 
Popularly known as Madhubala, from the serial, Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Drashti charges Rs 60,000-70,000 per day and shoots for 20 days a month. Now, that’s indeed some amount. 
 
8. <keyword id="27383" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shweta-Tiwari">Shweta Tiwari</keyword> 
Her stint with the small screen started with the tele serial Kasautii Zindagii Kay that established her as the new queen bee of television. Although the show is now over, Shweta continues to appear in reality and comedy shows. She has also done a couple of tele serials including Parvarish: Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi. Shweta takes home as much as Rs 60,000 per day.

Mumbai, Apr 13 () Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra has revealed that the work on the second season of "Hostages" is nearly complete and the team is trying amid restrictions to bring it out by May end.The first season of the Hotstar Special featured Tisca Chopra and Ronit Roy in the lead.Mishra said the work on season two is currently on in full swing."The edit of all the episodes are done. The background music is being done. We are a little slow because we can't meet, but things are happening. We are trying to adjust to this new way of working. I think the second season will come by May end," Mishra told reporters over Zoom call.The first season of "Hostages" is making its TV debut on Star Plus from on Monday.The "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" director said he hopes the TV audience embraces the web series. "This is also an opportunity to check to what extent the TV audience is opening up. It is not necessary that they will only like over the top, loud storytelling. Maybe this will change the way we narrate stories on TV. In other places, TV had evolved tremendously before OTT came. "Which was just an online platform. They were already making series like 'The Wire', 'The Sopranos'. Here, it was a jump. But maybe this is an opportunity. I am sure they will like it. A family can sit together and watch it. Lockdown has slowed down work on 'Hostages 2', but will be out by May: Sudhir Mishra

<ul><li>While the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> outbreak has led to productions of films and daily soaps being stopped across the country, TV viewership is going up due to people staying at home.</li><li>However, the GECs re now faced with the challenge of coming up with fresh content for its viewers.</li><li>In such a scenario, how are these channels planning to tackle the situation?</li></ul>It’s been close to 2 weeks since India’s film and television bodies decided to suspend shootings from to avoid the spread of the novel Coronavirus. The Indian Film &amp; Television Directors' Association (IFTDA), Producers Guild of India and Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE) had decided on March 17 to put production and shooting on hold till March 31. As the PM announced his 21-day complete lockdown, production will not start before April 14. The biggest impact of this will be on GEC channels that usually work with a content bank of about two weeks. However, with the lockdown, these channels will soon run out of fresh content to air. Considering most people are stuck at home, OTT and TV viewership saw a spike, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. The total TV consumption saw a spike of 8% across India in the week ended March 20 (<keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> Week 1), while the total time spent per user on smartphones went increased by 6.2% to 25 hours a week. Moreover, the consumption growth in the Hindi speaking markets (HSM) was at around 10% in comparison to the South region that grew by 5%. The HSM region saw an increase in terms of both reach and time spent. While this opens up possibilities for advertisers to catch more eyeballs, GECs are now faced with the problem of running out of content. In such a scenario, what is the strategy they are employing to ensure that they do not lose their audience who can only stay engaged if they are offered something new to watch? Ensuring all-round entertainment for consumers While production has come to a complete halt, all the channels believe that the show mustn’t stop and are strategizing at how to make the best use of the content at their disposal currently. Dangal TV ratings, undoubtedly, have also been helpful in successfully monetising already aired shows. In the past, shows like Bandini, Chandragupt Maurya, Bhagwaan Shree Krishna have done exceptionally well. Ramayana, too has a very strong connect with viewers across India beyond the Hindi speaking markets. Mythological and historical shows along with some well-produced thrillers and family dramas make it an interesting package for viewers. We are in tune with this, considering Dangal TV too has been airing Ramayana as well as similar mythological shows like Devi Adi Parashakti, Mahima Shani Dev Ki for a while now. We are aware that such content always has an audience and therefore we will continue to keep our viewers engaged with such shows.” Covid-19’s business impact While many sectors like events and out-of-home have been badly hit due to the lockdown, broadcasters are hopeful that they will be impacted less. Considering viewership is on the rise too, it presents an opportunity for both broadcasters and advertisers to make something out of an adverse situation. Dangal TV has seen a spike in its viewership, like most other GECs and is not focusing on new ideas. “Despite the COVID-19 challenge, Dangal TV is experiencing a spike in the average time spent.We are witnessing the early signs of a consumption uptick with an increase in the viewership. At Enterr10 Television Network, we are strongly connected and engaged with our viewers. Our numbers have been ahead of us. We are readily willing at focusing on exploring new ideas, IPs, etc. We haven’t stepped back in terms of exploring what more is possible, even during this period. Even in this unprecedented situation, we will continue to invest in good library, innovative programming and in distribution that will further aid in consolidating our position in both rural and urban markets. While there is huge competition amongst TV channels, our first priority is to consolidate, maintain and further strengthen our leadership position on television.” Pointing towards the fact that a lot of advertising on TV comes from FMCG that have been relatively less impacted, Sharma shared her optimism about the future. “The lockdown has hit the manufacturing, supply chain and consumption of all brands and that will invariably have an effect on ad spends. However, TV and digital will have a marginal impact as compared to other mediums like print, outdoors and radio as TV viewership is expected to see an upswing due to the forced lockdown. Secondly, a large amount of advertising revenue for a GEC comes from FMCG brands that are relatively less impacted in the current situation. Also, since it is an industry phenomenon, all GEC channels will witness a drop in ad spends,” explained Sharma. Added Agarwal, “Over the next 3 weeks, we expect content consumption on TV to go up as people look to keep themselves entertained. Given the temporary nature of the lockdown, it would be imprudent to quote any implication as of now, but we are sure that TV has become an essential service providing the much needed companionship to families in the current times.”
