Meet India’s most generous women

<ul><li>India has 119 people who donated more than ₹5 crore in FY23, and they gave away ₹8,445 crore.</li><li><keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> is the third most generous man in India but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year.</li><li>Gautam Adani gave 50% more than what he did last year to become India’s fifth most generous man.</li><li>The top 10 list of most generous billionaires has two Nilekanis – Nandan and his wife Rohini. </li></ul>Tech billionaires like <keyword id="44903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-nadar" source="Orion">Shiv Nadar</keyword> of HCL Technologies and Wipro’s <keyword id="6419840" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="azim-premji" source="Orion">Azim Premji</keyword> are a cut above the rest with their philanthropy – with size and scale. But young guns like Kamath brothers of Zerodha too are charting their own path by bringing in personal wealth and new causes like climate and sustainability, as per EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023. Nadar retained his title as the most generous billionaire in India. He and Premji are only two billionaires who donated over ₹1,000 crore in FY23. Most of Nadar’s philanthropic endeavours, who gave away ₹5.6 crore per day, are centred around arts and culture. In fact, Nadar’s generosity is more than that of eight of his counterparts put together in the top 10 list, that includes India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Premji is India’s second most generous man and his contributions went by 267% as compared to last year. “This is attributed to a significant 400% rise in dividend payouts by Wipro in FY23. An innovative strategy employed by Premji enables the trusts to benefit monetarily from the shares, while Premji retains the voting rights,” says Hurun. India’s richest man’s philanthropic outgo falls Mukesh Ambani is the third more generous man in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023, but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year. Meanwhile, Gautam Adani has seen huge wealth destruction in 2023 and conceded the richest man in India tag to Ambani. Yet, his generosity expanded. He is India’s fifth most generous man, donating ₹285 crore – and his philanthropic outgo went up by 50% since last year. He also moved up two places in the top ten list. Bajaj family also expanded its hearts and wallets — by 234%, to debut on the list this year. Cumulatively the top 10 philanthropists in India, donated ₹5,806 crore in FY23, as against a combined donation of ₹3,034 crore the year before. Apart from <keyword id="310580" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nandan-nilekeni" source="Orion">Nandan Nilekeni</keyword>, his wife <keyword id="5830274" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rohini-nilekeni" source="Orion">Rohini Nilekeni</keyword> also made it to the top 10 and their cause is also unique — ecosystem building. The list compiled 119 who donated over ₹5 crore in FY23, with 25 new entrants. They cumulatively donated ₹8,445 crore – up 59% compared to last year, and 200% compared to three years back. “Wealth creation is important for economic development, while philanthropy is equally important for economic prosperity. This year is a record year for big philanthropy. Given India's potential for wealth creation and assuming a continued commitment to philanthropy by billionaires, I anticipate these figures to potentially double over the next five years,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India. In the past five years, the number of donors contributing over ₹100 crore has surged from two to 14, and those donating over ₹50 crore has risen from five to 24. ‘personally generous’ The list has 24 people who donated in their personal capacity – and it has the usual suspects like Nadar, Premji and Nilekenis. But it has surprises too. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath donated over ₹110 crore in their personal capacity with most of these funds going towards climate and sustainability. At 44 and 37 respectively, they’re also one of the youngest in the list. Manipal’s Ranjan Pai who is 50 years old donated 92 crore, towards education. The average age of India’s most generous philanthropists remains 60. Pai’s allocation went up 512% in the last one year. The other notable names amongst who donated their personal wealth are — A M Naik of L&amp;T who donated ₹150 crore; Sushmita and <keyword id="56651" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subroto-bagchi" source="Orion">Subroto Bagchi</keyword> of Mindtree and Infosys’ Kris Gopalakrishnan and family. M A Yusuf Ali of Lulu Group also donated more in their personal capacity, and his allocation went up by 350% in FY23. “Cumulative personal donations have increased by 60% to reach ₹4,958 crore, constituting 70% of the total donations in the list. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the surge in personal philanthropy in India,” Junaid. In general, companies are also spending more as a part of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR spending of BSE 200 companies has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% in the last nine years. Their cumulative CSR spend grew from ₹5,561 crore FY15 to ₹12,271 crore in FY23. “Government, civil society, and the corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. CSR is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement,” Hurun says.

Shiv Nadar is India’s most generous billionaire but young guns have their hearts in the right place

<ul><li><keyword id="44903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-nadar" source="Orion">Shiv Nadar</keyword> made donations worth ₹1,161 crore during FY22, which comes up to ₹3 crore per day.</li><li>Wipro’s <keyword id="6419840" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="azim-premji" source="Orion">Azim Premji</keyword> slips to the second spot with an annual donation of ₹484 crore as his contribution towards philanthropy has fallen by 95% year-on-year.</li><li>Overall, contributions towards philanthropy have fallen in FY22 because of the pandemic impact.</li><li>The top 10 list cumulatively donated ₹3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of ₹12,785 crore last year.</li></ul>Shiv Nadar, the founder and chairman of HCL Technologies, is India’s most generous, with donations of ₹3 crore per day, even as contributions towards philanthropy continue to moderate after the pandemic. With an annual contribution of ₹1,161 crore in fiscal 2022, Shiv Nadar has displaced Wipro’s Azim Premji as the most generous Indian, according to the EdelGive <keyword id="3606268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india-philanthropy-list" source="Orion">Hurun India Philanthropy List</keyword> 2022. The top 10 list cumulatively donated ₹3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of ₹12,785 crore last year. The good news is that the list has seen 19 new additions, with total donations by these new entrants adding up to ₹832 crore. Also, six women have featured on the list this year. The youngest philanthropist on the list is 36-year-old Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha. Shiv Nadar tops philanthropy list, even as India’s most generous cut back after the pandemic

Mumbai, Apr 16 () Private sector lender IndusInd Bank on Thursday said it has committed Rs 30 crore towards Covid-19 relief efforts. The bank did not specify if it is contributing to any corpus like the PM CARES Fund and limited itself to saying that it is working with both the central and state governments to fight the pandemic. It can be noted that a slew of corporates and banks have announced help to the relief efforts since the outbreak last month. IndusInd Bank said it has supplied relief materials such as face masks, hand sanitisers and gloves to the affected areas to and is also working on facilitating personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical officials on duty. It has also been given a mandate of opening an account towards the collection of contributions towards Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund), an official statement said. Meanwhile, Edelgive Foundation headed by Vidya Shah has also made a pledge to spend Rs 10 crore through NGOs working with vulnerable communities in the June quarter. The foundation has already helped develop the Common Charter for Indian Donor and Philanthropic Community as a founding member. This common platform for action on Covid-19 is developed jointly by Shah, Rohini Nilekani of Arghyam, Rishad Premji of Wipro, Amitabh Behar of Oxfam India and Ford Foundation. Its parent Edelweiss Group has already committed Rs 2.5 crore to the PM CARES Fund and to the Chief Minister's Office in Maharashtra for the same efforts. AA ANSANS

High-profile Indian diaspora group raises USD 600K for COVID-19 relief

Mumbai, Jan 22 () Philanthropy arms of top corporates, including the Tatas, Mahindras, Godrejs and Premjis, on Wednesday announced a partnership to minimise the climate change impact.
 The India Climate Collaborative (ICC) will be working to strengthen the climate community locally, build a climate narrative and drive solutions that will ensure both the natural world and people thrive.
 The announcement comes amid an increased conversation on climate change, with the 50th session of the World Economic Forum in Davos generating the maximum flutter, which has also seen US President Donald Trump calling the greens "prophets of doom".
 "Our collective leadership through the ICC will indicate to the world that Indian philanthropy is ready to be a leader in climate action," Tata Trusts Chairman Ratan Tata said in a statement.
 The ICC seeks to build a collaborative platform for diverse voices, innovative solutions, and collective investments, the statement said, without quantifying the money which the corporates are pooling together for the platform.
 Vidya Shah of financial services firm Edelweiss' corporate social arm, Rohini Nilekani of Infosys' CSR arm and banker Harmendra Kothari are among the other names in the 40-member collective.
 "It is clear that the world cannot continue to pursue a business-as-usual approach and nobody can solve the problem on their own. Business, government, and philanthropy must collaborate within and among themselves to drive results quickly and at scale," Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra was quoted as saying.
 "Together we will find solutions that will make climate action effective and impactful," he added.
 Nadir Godrej, the managing director of Godrej Indistries, said businesses can do a lot for the planet in a cost effective way.
 "We have to look at localised solutions that can solve global problems, and this will need businesses, governments, academia, and individuals to work together to identify and scale up solutions. The role of philanthropy will be to augment these efforts," he said.
 Others who have joined the initiative include Swades Foundation, Sanctuary Asia Foundation, Mongabay-India, Indian Development Review (IDR), People's Archive for Rural India (PARI), Climate Collective Foundation, SELCO, and the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES).

QR codes are an enhanced version of barcodes which contain information in a machine readable format. The code, when scanned takes the user to the landing page of the learning modules. The chapters of a textbook have up to three codes containing information. This information can be audio, video or text format. In 2017, the ministry launched project ‘Diksha’, which uses an open source platform Sunbird to produce the content. This subject-wise content is made centrally available on the application. The students can access it by scanning the patterns in the textbook on the Diksha app. The project that initially kicked off in five states is now being implemented across 28 states in India. The app has garnered over 7 million downloads since the launch and over 500 million school textbooks now provide digital content by scanning QR codes. “The way we look at it is, use technology as an enabler and see what problems we can solve through it. We have to first understand the problem we want to solve and then use technology to distribute the ability to solve ‘societal platform thinking,’” said Rohini Nilekani of <keyword id="3997740" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ekstep-foundation">EkStep Foundation</keyword>. In fact, CBSE is now looking to digitize all the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books too — across first to tenth grade. In addition, it is also planning to create a resource pool for students to access explanation videos, powerpoint presentations and much more. "These codes will be mapped with the content of each textbook from Class 1 to 12 and will be linked with a <keyword id="1011037" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QR-code">QR code</keyword>, which will be printed in the textbooks," CBSE officials earlier <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/ncert-textbooks-qr-codes-1293247-2018-07-23">said</a>. The larger rationale is to digitally empower both students and teachers. As of now, the initiative caters to approximately 120 million children and 4 million teachers. This content is then used in schools across states. “The content which has been developed by one state can now be consumed easily by another state. All they need to do is put a subtitle or voice over and reuse the video by putting it in their QR codes — and this is happening a lot,” Anita Karwal, chairperson of CBSE told Business Standard. 500 million school textbooks now provide digital content via QR codes

By Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 24 () An Indian-American NGO has raised USD 1 million to fight hunger in India and the United States amid the the coronavirus pandemic.This translates to 4,700,000 meals for people in the United States and ration kits for 106,000 migrant workers in India that will last them seven to 10 days, said M R Rangaswami, founder and chairman of the board of NGO Indiaspora. It was a volunteer group in San Jose, California that made the last donation of USD 5,000 after which the campaign fund crossed USD 1 million. "It is so heartening to see that this is just a group of regular Indian Americans, who are a volunteer group, and are gifting to different non-profits and charities. They on their own decided that this was the best cause," Rangaswami, an investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, told .The money raised by Indiaspora through its 'ChaloGive for COVID-19' online campaign will be used to provide relief directly to vulnerable population in both the countries. Contributions given are sent to two beneficiary organisations, Feeding America in the US and Goonj in India. Feeding America is using the contributions to bolster its nationwide network of 200 food banks. Goonj is using the funds to provide food, dry ration and hygiene kits to displaced migrants in parts of eighteen states in India. In this hour of coronavirus pandemic that has hit both the United States and India, the Indian-American community has resoundingly shown up across the country, said Rangaswami. "It's not just donations to Indiaspora. The Sikhs feeding people through langar, young children making masks for healthcare workers, SEWA International making plasma donation matching. It has been an outpouring from across the country, which I have never seen before," said the California-based venture capitalist, who has closely following communities' philanthropic activities for long time. Such an outpouring of support was last time seen during the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, but that time the call was given by the then US President Bill Clinton and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said. "Since then, I have not seen anything of this scale (of giving by Indian-Americans)," he said, adding that the community this time is contributing both their time and money. SEWA International, another non-profit body has raised more than USD 500,000 for its coronavirus relief work. One of the donations that helped Indiaspora cross the USD 1 million threshold came from Bay-area based volunteer group Aram Sei, whose vision is to support grassroots charities worldwide in the areas of education and healthcare. "Our team of twelve members is proud to support the ChaloGive fundraiser initiative that helps us make a direct impact to those in need," said Sangeetha Lakshminarayanan, president and founder of Aram Sei."We feel fortunate to be able to make a difference in our country of origin and the country we have embraced and made our home," she said. "There was a huge desire in our community to help during this crisis, and we provided an easy way to give. The Indian diaspora stood up and rose to the occasion when the ultimate time of reckoning arrived," said Indiaspora's executive director, Sanjeev Joshipura. "We want to do everything we can to help our country of birth and our country of citizenship. It is not either or, it is US and India," he added. On Thursday, Indiaspora also added new partnerships for the ChaloGive campaign. In addition to former Pepsico CEO Indra Nooyi, noted philanthropists Rohini and Nandan Nilekani, former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and actor Nandita Das, all existing 'ChaloGive for COVID-19' Ambassadors, Indiaspora announced the addition of GiveIndia CEO Atul Satija, and Raj and Aradhana (Anna) Asava, the pioneers of the 'HungerMitao' (wipe out hunger) movement in America. "Having enabled over 10 million meals to-date, HungerMitao is proud to partner with Indiaspora to raise funds for the food challenged in this time of crisis," said Raj and Anna Asava, who both have a successful track record of partnering with food banks across North America. "HungerMitao is a grassroots initiative engaging the Indian-American community in the fight against hunger through the Feeding America network of food banks," he said. "Just as India's social indices had begun to improve, coronavirus threatens to bring 80 per cent of India's working population - the informal sector - to its knees," said Atul Satija, founder of India's largest donation platform, and Indiaspora's India partner for ChaloGive. "We appeal to the huge Indian diaspora to support the immediate needs of hunger and reviving livelihoods before they fall back into extreme poverty, and rebuilding the lives of the less fortunate in the longer term," he said. The campaign at ChaloGive.org continues, with a live Facebook rally planned on May 4 at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST on the eve of Giving Tuesday for COVID-19, a media release said.ChaloGive for COVID-19 is the second online campaign by Indiaspora.
