"In 1983, we went as underdogs. But after that, that tag was taken off us. Whenever we go into World Cup, people expect India to win. No one is taking us lightly anymore," he said. The just-concluded mega-event marks the end of head coach Rahul Dravid's tenure. Speculation is rife that former opener Gautam Gambhir will take over from him but Binny chose to keep mum on the matter. "Nothing concrete has come yet. Gautam Gambhir has a lot of experience. It's going to take time to bridge the gap: BCCI Prez on India's T20 team without Rohit, Virat

After hectic parleys and back-channel discussions in the past one week, it was decided that the 67-year-old from Bengaluru would be the 36th Board president, one of the sources familiar with the development, said. Jay <keyword id="1858" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shah" source="Orion">Shah</keyword>, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will continue as BCCI Secretary for his second consecutive term. Shah is also expected to replace Ganguly as India's representative at the all-powerful ICC Board. "Jay has been at the forefront of dealing with ICC matters on behalf of BCCI and with the 2023 World Cup around the corner in just one year's time, it is important that India has robust leadership at the Board of Directors meeting in the coming days," a BCCI source said. Binny will officially take charge of BCCI on October 18 at the AGM in Mumbai. There won't be any election to any post as all candidates will be chosen unopposed. All the people in the fray, including Shah and Shukla, filed their nomination papers on Tuesday. Binny, though, is a surprise choice to head the BCCI. However, hints were dropped that his name will crop up for some position when Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) named him as its representative at the BCCI AGM instead of secretary Santosh Menon. "Roger is one of the finest human beings and a thorough gentleman, who has graced the field for India. Plus he is also a World Cup hero and has a squeaky-clean image. He had resigned from the selection committee as his son Stuart back then was in contention to be in the Indian team," said another BCCI source. "He is the right choice for the job," the source added. The only Congressman in the BCCI cabinet is <keyword id="13855" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajeev-shukla" source="Orion">Rajeev Shukla</keyword>, who will continue as vice president. Sports minister Anurag Thakur's younger brother Arun Singh Dhumal, who is currently the treasurer, will now become IPL chairman. He will replace Brijesh Patel. Influential Maharashtra BJP leader Ashish Shelar will be the new treasurer which means that he won't become Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president. He was supposed to take up the role with support from the Sharad Pawar faction. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's close aide Devajit Saikia will replace Jayesh George as the new joint secretary. Whether BCCI will contest for the ICC chairmanship hasn't been decided as yet. The medium pacer was one of the architects of India's historic World Cup triumph in 1983. In eight games, he took 18 wickets, the highest in that edition of the prestigious tournament. Ganguly, who reached Mumbai on Monday evening, had a lot of meetings with the stakeholders in New Delhi, last week. The former India captain was keen to continue as BCCI President but he was told that there is no precedence of giving a second term to the Board president. "Sourav was offered IPL chairmanship but he politely declined the offer. His logic was that he cannot accept becoming head of a sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution. He had expressed interest in continuing in the position," the BCCI source said. In the case of Dhumal, the decision makers waited for Ganguly to take a call on IPL chairmanship and once he refused, they promoted the Himachal man, who, along with secretary Shah, is known to be one of the most efficient men in the last BCCI cabinet. With Ganguly moving out of the picture, the East representation was always going to be Assam CM Biswa Sarma's call as he played a key role even last time. The names of members in the BCCI Apex Council and IPL Governing Council will be known when the final list will be published in a few days. 'Mr Intense' Gautam Gambhir succeeds 'Mr Dependable' as Indian men's cricket team's head coach

I believe this is a significant step forward for women's cricket and the game overall." "We are handing over an organisation that sits over a treasury of Rs 9629 crores of funds, which is roughly thrice of what we got at the time of our taking over from CoA," Dhumal wrote in his note as the outgoing treasurer. "This is remarkable in the light of the fact that the disbursement to the state associations has seen a jump of nearly 5 times; from Rs 680 crores during the CoA tenure to Rs 3295 crores now to the state associations," Dhumal added. A release by cricket's apex governing body in the country mentioned the criteria for those who wish to apply for the positions. "Should have played a minimum of 7 Test matches or 30 First Class matches, or 10 ODI and 20 First Class matches," a BCCI release said. "Should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago and no person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the rules and regulations of BCCI) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of the Men's Selection Committee," the release added. BCCI on Sunday convened the review meeting of Team India in Mumbai to review performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 where the team badly lost in the semi-final match to England by 10 wickets. The board has shortlisted 20 players for the ICC World Cup 2023 in October to be held in India. Chetan Sharma likely to get another term as chief selector of India

Former India captain <keyword id="6359039" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sourav-ganguly" source="Orion">Sourav Ganguly</keyword>, who is soon going to become a former <keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword> president, has fallen out of favour with the board and is reportedly ending his term on a 'disappointing' note. During the upcoming BCCI AGM and elections on October 18, most members of the outgoing administration are set to find places in the new dispensation, barring <keyword id="6505" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ganguly" source="Orion">Ganguly</keyword> and Jayesh George, the joint secretary. And, Ganguly is not pleased with the developments in the last few days. The former India allrounder Roger Binny on Tuesday filed his nomination for the post of BCCI president and is likely to get elected unopposed since no other candidate has emerged so far as his challenger. As a normal practice, the outgoing BCCI president proposes the name of the upcoming board chief but a dejected Ganguly didn't do the same with Binny. The former cricketer was to himself on Tuesday at the board's office largely, while others were involved in the nomination process, a Cricbuzz report said. "He clearly looked upset, disappointed and dejected," said a member who was present at the BCCI office. The 50-year-old was the last one to leave the BCCI office after the nomination process ended, swiftly getting into his car and rolling up the glasses of the window. Outside the BCCI office, there were also murmurs among state representatives about the immediate future of Ganguly. "Back to Kolkata," someone suggested. "Back to <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>," another chimed in, hinting that he will go back to the Delhi Capitals franchise of the <keyword id="6354312" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ipl" source="Orion">IPL</keyword>, as a director. The report further said that Ganguly was told that his performance did not live up to the expectations although the official reason is that there is no precedent of a president holding two full terms, during an informal meeting among the senior past and current administrators from prominent state associations before the nomination day. Another reason for Ganguly not continuing at the coveted post is that the sponsors of Indian cricket boards were not happy with the cricketer, who endorses rival brands. The matter was often discussed among the members. Overall, the BCCI seems to have moved on from Ganguly which also means he is unlikely to be its candidate for the ICC Chair, the election for which is next month. It has been also learnt that Ganguly was offered the post of IPL chairman. However, the former left-handed batter politely declined the offer. His logic was that he cannot accept becoming head of a sub-committee in the BCCI after heading the same institution. BCCI chief Ganguly left 'disappointed and dejected' after falling out of favour

<keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword>, the businessman and magnate, last week fired over 50 per cent of Twitter employees once he took over the social media company. The world was astounded at the way it was done, without a human care and thought of any kindness behind it. There was no exit interview or interaction between the employees and the company and a call or a message was all that apparently one got as an adieu. Reverberating with the unceremonious exits of thousands of Twitter, Amazon, Meta and several other such companies, one was surprised about the dreaded pink slip that was given to all the selectors of the <keyword id="8675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-cricket-team" source="Orion">Indian cricket team</keyword> by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (<keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword>) as well. The loss in the semifinal stage of the T20 World Cup was the death knell for the wise men who failed to select the right winning squad for the prestigious tournament. The selectors in the past have been called various names. However, two of India's legendary cricketers, referred to them as 'A bunch of Jokers' and 'Court Jesters and Lame Ducks', which was pretty amusing at that time. Both were proven right. However, the Indian acceptance of 'This is the way it is' needs to inspire a change for the better in the future. One did feel sorry for the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee, which did not receive any written or verbal brickbats. However, they had their photographs splashed in several print and digital media, with the word 'Sacked' prominently displayed. They did select a squad that had all the skills and experience to combine themselves into a forceful and winning unit. The Indian think tank of the coach, captain and the support staff was outsmarted both on and off the field by England. India's loss needed fall guys and the easiest were 'the wise men of Gotham' -- the selectors. The BCCI, interestingly, since then has used the existing selectors to select the sides for India's upcoming series. The post of the selectors is now a well-remunerated one and is a full-time job and it, therefore, requires a professional approach. The most important task is in the selection of the selectors. There are certain criteria that are required to be met as regards the age being under 60 years as well as one should have played seven Test matches or 30 First-class matches etc. However, the most important appointment by the BCCI is the appointment of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC selects the selectors and, therefore, the three members that represent it should have impeccable credentials. They, one feels, should have played over 25 Test matches and have a thorough knowledge of the game and what the position entails. The BCCI are fortunate that they have Roger Binny as their president, Dilip Vengsarkar and Shubhangi Kulkarni in their Apex Committee, three Indian Test cricketers who would be ideal people to select a very competent CAC. The selectors now are a professional outfit, wherein, the earlier requirement of five zonal representatives should be abolished. Earlier, this was necessary as the Ranji Trophy was played initially in their respective zones and thereafter teams qualified for the knock-out stage. In the present format, the zonal basis makes no sense as teams are now placed in groups from any part of India. The five selectors, similar to selection committees in other cricket-playing countries of the world, need to have individuals with the best credentials and capabilities. They could all be from one state or zone if need be. The vast amount of cricket being played domestically, one feels, each selector needs to have his own team of assistant selectors. The job now entails much more than just watching selective matches but a thorough analysis of players and their performance. India is a vast cricket-playing country and the challenge is for one to ensure that every talented Indian cricketer is identified and spotted on time. The talent-spotting programme, which was introduced under Vengsarkar many years ago, was a huge success. A similar approach should be conceptualised, with talent spotters from respective zones reporting to each of the five selectors. This would ensure a better coverage of unearthing aspiring cricketers from the junior to the senior-most level. At present, the IPL and the Under-19 India performers have become the hotbed for quick and early recognition. This is not the best solution as there are several other cricketers playing in the domestic circuit who have not been chosen in the IPL and have long passed the age of 19. A good example of late bloomers is Suryakumar Yadav. SKY, as he is popularly known, is batting like a man possessed, in limited-overs cricket. He has been a part of domestic cricket for many years and is at present 32 years old. He seems ready to play Test cricket, a format that evaded him till now. The time has come for a radical change on the appointment, scope and deliverables of a national cricket selector at all levels of the game. A common structure should be introduced that covers the cricket associations as well. The pink slips and sacking, one feels, is not the best way forward. A selector is, after all, only the facilitator and not the performer. The irony in this case was the facilitators became the fall guys whereas the ones who needed to perform are sitting unreprimanded. This definitely needs a comprehensive change.
