The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating accusations levelled against the tech giant but experts from Oracle claim that this exercise by Google costs users around 1GB of data each month. <br /><br />Oracle, one of the biggest computer software companies in the world, has said that even if devices are switched to Aeroplane mode or <keyword id="97416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-maps">Google Maps</keyword> is disabled, consumer data is still being consumed to send location data. What’s more, even removing the SIM card doesn’t stop the data from going through. <br /><br />It’s only once the phone is switched off that Google stops tracking the device, according to experts. Oracle claims that Google can go so far as to determine the floor on which users are shopping when in a mall, using barometric pressure readings. <br /><br />The issue isn’t limited to the 10 million Android users in Australia but <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/may/14/australian-regulator-investigates-google-data-harvesting-from-android-phones">extends</a> to their service providers as well, who are reportedly being paid to send this data forward. <br /><br />With Facebook and Google repeatedly in the news for privacy and security concerns, the ACCC was looking into them after several <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/may/04/google-facebook-not-playing-by-the-rules-news-corp-tells-accc">reported concerns</a> by Australian media companies about the impact that Google and Facebook have on the advertising market. This is when Oracle was called in to make a presentation to the ACCC, with respect to the inquiry into digital platforms. <br /><br />Their presentation showed that Google has mapped IP addresses, mobile towers and WiFi connection points. While Google says that tracking data only comes under their purview with the permission of smartphone users, ‘valid’ consent is what the ACCC is questioning. <br /><br />In light of recent events, <keyword id="1550402" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rod-Sims">Rod Sims</keyword>, Chairman of the ACCC, stated, “Their (Facebook and Google) initial approach is to ignore any potential breaches of privacy and, as we have now seen, when people notice, their approach is to ask for forgiveness.”<br /><br /><br /><br />

<ul><li>Australia’s competition regulator – Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has alleged that <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> didn’t inform users clearly about how it used their personal data.</li><li>The <keyword id="1392353" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Australian-regulator">Australian regulator</keyword> alleges this has helped Google get consumer behavior information of millions of users.</li><li>For the tech giant Google, this is not a new accusation. It has been battling similar cases in several other countries.</li></ul>Google is caught in yet another legal hassle. Australia’s competition regulator - Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has filed a fresh case against the tech giant. <br /><br />The ACCC has alleged that Google didn’t clearly state or inform consumers - that in 2016 it combined personal information in Google accounts with activities on other websites that use the company’s technology. <br /><br />This, the Australian regulator, alleges has helped Google get consumer behaviour information of millions of users, which could further help the company for targeted advertising for its platforms – Google Ad Manager and Google Marketing Platform brands.<br /><br />“We are taking this action because we consider Google misled Australian consumers about what it planned to do with large amounts of their personal information, including internet activity on websites not connected to Google,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.<br /><br /><strong>But this is not new for Google</strong><br /><br />Google lost a similar battle in France. Earlier in June, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/06/19/french-court-slaps-down-googles-appeal-against-57m-gdpr-fine/">Google failed to win</a> a plea against a $57 million fine in France for not being clear to Android users on how it uses the data of the users. Google has been sued in Australia for alleged misuse of personal data

London, July 4 (IANS) After issuing a warning in February about potential privacy risks of Google having access to Fitbits data, the European Union (EU) regulators have now sent detailed questionnaires to their rivals, asking them to assess how the acquisition can affect the digital healthcare space.<br /><br />The anti-competition watchdog has set a deadline of July 20 for its next decision regarding the $2,1 billion Google-Fitbit deal<br /><br />"The level of detail in the recent questionnaires sent to the companies' rivals suggests an extended investigation could be in the works," reports The Financial Times.<br /><br />The EU regulators have asked rivals whether the Google-Fitbit deal will disadvantage fitness tracking apps hosted in Google's Play Store, and "how Google might use the data to profile users for its search and advertising business".<br /><br />The move comes in the wake of the tech giant's plan to scoop up the health and activity data of millions of Fitbit users.<br /><br />Regulators are in the process of considering whether to allow the tech giant to gobble up all this data.<br /><br />In an earlier statement, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) wrote: "There are concerns that the possible further combination and accumulation of sensitive personal data regarding people in Europe by a major tech company could entail a high level of risk to the fundamental rights to privacy and to the protection of personal data".<br /><br />In the EU, how privacy is handled will have a huge impact on whether or not the deal goes through.<br /><br />The EDPB also left a reminder that Google and Fitbit are obligated to conduct a transparent assessment of "the data protection requirements and privacy implications" regarding this merger. <br /><br />The US Justice Department and Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission have also raised their concerns over the deal.<br /><br />"Buying Fitbit will allow Google to build an even more comprehensive set of user data, further cementing its position and raising barriers to entry to potential rivals," according to ACCC Chairman Rod Sims.<br /><br />Google acquired Fitbit for $2.1 billion late last year, a deal that includes the user data of Fitbit customers including activity, sleep, location, and other health data.<br /><br />Google, however, has stressed that "Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads." <br /><br />--IANS<br /><br />na/

It also cut its full-year earnings forcasts by 5.2% </span>to $13.77, but held its price target of $240 for the trailing 12 months - 7% above where shares are currently trading.</p><div title="Page 1"><p><span>But Morgan Stanley noted that Apple's two expensive versions - the XS ($999) and XS Max ($1,099) - could still lift </span>iPhone average selling prices, and its dual SIM is a potential new demand driver, especially in China.
