<ul class="summary-list"><li>Scott Lengel, a former Microsoft CTO, launched an AI-powered RV road trip planner, AdventureGenie.</li><li>He said when he got into RVing during the pandemic, he couldn't find a great planning tool.</li></ul><p>Scott Lengel and his wife, Lisa, were Marriott people.</p><p>After spending 23 years as a CTO at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-alphabet-quarterly-earnings-profits-ai-investment-payoff-2024-4">Microsoft</a>, Lengel retired in 2017, at which point he and his wife knew they wanted to travel the world. They visited places like Cambodia, Vietnam, and India, typically traveling by plane and staying in hotels — often Marriotts.</p><p>Then the pandemic hit.</p><p>Suddenly, they were stuck at home in South Carolina. That's when the couple realized, "We really haven't seen the good old US of A."</p><p>Up until that point, they'd never even been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-camping-better-than-traditional-vacations-travel-tips-2024-3">camping</a>.</p><p>"We figured if ever there was a time to go RVing, to go camping, this would be it," Lengel told Business Insider.</p><p>So they rented an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/traded-house-for-rv-life-harder-than-we-expected-2023-7">RV</a> and set off for Nashville with a couple of good friends. "We just had a blast," Lengel said. "Hanging around the campsite and the campfire and eating and beverages, and just the camaraderie. We just fell in love with the lifestyle of camping in one week."</p><p>Within six months, they <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couples-sold-their-homes-and-now-live-in-luxury-rvs-2022-6">purchased an RV</a> of their own and started taking it all over. But when the couple tried to plan a six-week, multi-stop road trip to the national parks of the Southwest, they realized it was actually pretty challenging and that the existing resources were not great.</p><p>"There has to be a better way," they thought.</p><p>A couple of years later, in May 2023, Lengel launched <a target="_blank" href="https://adventuregenie.com">AdventureGenie</a> — an AI-powered RV trip planner. Lengel, who serves as chairman and CEO, said that in less than a year, AdventureGenie has attracted more than 10,000 users, and not just RVers, but also people traveling in cars on all kinds of road trips.</p><h2>AI can customize trip planning</h2><p>AdventureGenie is one of many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tripadvisor-free-ai-planning-tool-pros-cons-2024-2">AI-powered trip-planning tools</a> that have popped up over the past couple of years. It's been featured on lists of the best <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gorving.com/tips-inspiration/trip-planning/11-best-rv-trip-planning-apps-2024">RV-</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.travelaihub.com/ai-road-trip-planners/">road-trip</a> planning AI tools.</p><p>AdventureGenie is set up to help people plan their trips in three phases, which Lengel said was based on talking to thousands of people about how they plan their trips.</p><p>First, you can shape your trip. You can tell AdventureGenie things like where you want to start, where you want to end, how many miles you want to drive in a day, and any places you know you want to stop along the way. AdventureGenie will create a custom route based on your preferences and what the program knows about you, either from what you've told it or from past trips you've planned.</p><div type="image" title="Road trip planner map" height="1240" width="2233" msid="109754267" hostid="261" sizebytes="109882"></div><p>Second, you can select your campsites. AdventureGenie uses AI to compile information about campsites and make recommendations based on your preferences. In addition to generating an overall score on a campsite, AdventureGenie also generates a score that is unique to you, indicating how likely a specific campground is to meet your personal needs.</p><p>Third, is finding things to do. For instance, if it knows you like eating at local restaurants, hiking, and biking, as Lengel and his wife do, it can point out those attractions.</p><p>The biggest thing AI brings to AdventureGenie's trip planning is the customization, Lengel said. Instead of looking up a generic road trip planner that is the first hit served to everyone on Google, AdventureGenie can create itineraries that are unique to you.</p><p>"It feels as if you have a copilot or a travel planner sitting by your side and knows what you're looking for and customizes it for you," Lengel said.</p><div type="image" title="Campground recommendation" height="1252" width="2248" msid="109754269" hostid="261" sizebytes="136402"></div><p>He said that when RVers first use AdventureGenie the "jaw-dropping" moment for them is when it fills in the blanks on a trip with stops along the way.</p><p>In the past, if you wanted to road trip from South Carolina to Yellowstone, you'd have to look at a map and try to plot out stops based on how many miles a day you want to drive. But you'd also have to manually figure out whether those stops have campsites that suit your needs, or if they have any other attractions that make them worth passing through, or how far off the highway they are.</p><p>Lengel said new AdventureGenie users often say it saves them so much time planning their trip just by filling in their route.</p><p>"That's pretty darn rewarding for us," he said.</p><h2>From Microsoft to tech startup</h2><p>Lengel, who came out of retirement to launch AdventureGenie, said working on this startup has been a major change of pace from his days at Microsoft, which he also loved.</p><p>"We're a startup at our core, and it's a lot different than when I was working for an organization that had 150,000 employees and an incredible budget," he said. "We all wear lots of hats, which has been exciting, thrilling, and even challenging from time to time."</p><p>These days, he and his wife are on the road three out of four weeks a month, though now it's usually for work, visiting trade shows and meeting with RV user groups.</p><p>However, they do still make a point to do some fun things, too.</p><p>When Lengel spoke to BI, he was sitting in his RV in the Florida Keys, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C6Wg4RhOJ_3/?hl=en">a view of the ocean right out his window</a>.</p>

macOS update brings SharePlay to Macs allowing users to watch movies, shows with friends

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Samantha Shea had never been outside the US before she started college in 2014.</li><li>After graduating in 2019, she visited India and Pakistan while developing her travel writing.</li></ul><p>When I tell people from back home that I live in Northern Pakistan, I'm usually met with shock.</p><p>Their disbelief escalates when I show them pictures of the snow-capped Karakoram mountain range that surround the village where I live.</p><p>"I thought Pakistan was a desert" is the most common response. As wrong as they are, I don't blame them. I didn't know much about Pakistan before traveling there after college.  </p><p>I live in Hunza Valley, 8,500 feet above sea level on the border with Western China, where I work as a digital nomad.</p><p>When I first came to Pakistan in 2019, I was a recent University of Miami grad who'd never lived outside the US. </p><div type="image" title="A drone shot of Hunza Valley in early May." height="3648" width="4864" msid="100102321" hostid="261"></div><p>In Hunza, electricity comes on for only a few hours a day, you walk to the local market if you need anything – Amazon doesn't deliver to the mountainous valley region – and running hot water isn't guaranteed. </p><p>The valley has, despite these elements, become my home. Here, I don't lock up my bike or my front door, I can walk everywhere, and my recent major home renovation cost me only $3,000. </p><h2>Current guidance around traveling to Pakistan </h2><p>The US travel advice for Pakistan is to avoid traveling to Balochistan province, many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Indian-Pakistan border because of the potential for terrorist attacks, kidnapping, and armed conflict at the border.</p><p>The US government warns that the assistance it can provide citizens traveling in Pakistan is limited because of these security issues. However, I have personally traveled to some of these areas and did not feel unsafe at the time.</p><p>Although this doesn't mean these threats aren't real and something to consider, many foreign nationals and local Pakistani people travel to the Hunza Valley without incident. Forbes recently named Pakistan an <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/annabel/2020/01/02/the-not-hot-list-10-best-under-the-radar-trips-for-2020/?sh=acd0ba222647" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">up-and-coming adventure vacation</a>. CN Traveller also awarded Pakistan as their <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d18T5ypYzgM&amp;t=16s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">top holiday destination in 2020</a>.</p><h2><strong>My journey to a remote village in Northern Pakistan </strong></h2><p>My love of travel began at college. From 2014 to 2019, I was a student at the University of Miami in Florida. While I loved my school, being by the beach, and Florida's eternal summer, I never felt settled in Miami. </p><div type="image" title="Samantha Shea, young woman stood in front of the Miami beach shoreline." height="2688" width="3583" msid="100102323" hostid="261"></div><p>Because I grew up in suburban Connecticut, the move to a busy city was a big adjustment. It was noisy and fast-paced, and the proximity to crime, common in urban areas, put me on edge. </p><p>I had never traveled outside the US growing up, but I fell in love with backpacking at college. My trips became more and more offbeat. I was traveling through India the summer before my senior year in 2018 when I decided to pursue a career in travel. </p><h2><strong>I wanted to become a freelance travel blogger after graduation</strong></h2><h2><strong><div type="image" title="Samantha Shea graduating from the university of Miami sat on the college's sign." height="2179" width="2906" msid="100102325" hostid="261"></div></strong></h2><p>I worked three part-time jobs while finishing my degree to save up for my indefinite adventure.</p><p>After graduating in 2019, I set off for India again, traveling around the country and into neighboring Pakistan. </p><p>Despite media negativity and concerns from family and friends, I didn't feel nervous crossing the border from India. I traveled from the historical city of Lahore to the Hindu Kush mountains of Upper Chitral — a region that directly borders Afghanistan — and felt comfortable everywhere I went. </p><div type="image" title="Samantha Shea in Swat Valley Pakistan" height="2316" width="3088" msid="100102329" hostid="261"></div><p>I found it easier and more fun to travel here than in India, a much more "mainstream" backpacking destination. I encountered fewer scammers traveling in Pakistan. I also found Pakistan had less trash on the streets, and the roads were in better condition.</p><h2><strong>I worked for DoorDash and learned Urdu while waiting out COVID-19 limitations</strong></h2><p>In December 2019, I returned to my family home with the plan to move to Pakistan full time in the spring as a digital nomad.</p><p>My plans were halted by COVID-19. I spent the next year learning Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, and delivering for DoorDash. I also finally saw some freelance traction. </p><p>I got my first paid byline, increased my blog traffic, and freelanced in content writing and social-media management. I wanted to have established myself as a digital nomad before I left home.</p><p>In April 2021, I traveled alone to Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. I hadn't arranged a guide and had no plan beyond my first few nights at a hostel. To many, my trip seemed insane, but I was committed. </p><h2><div type="image" title="The vistas on a multi-day hike to the Shimshal Pass, not far from the Chinese border." height="2614" width="3486" msid="100102331" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2><strong>Why Hunza Valley? </strong></h2><p>My 2021 journey brought me to Hunza Valley for a reason. I'd head it was well known as the safest destination for <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Life-Arts/Life/Hunza-Valley-women-challenge-Pakistani-patriarchy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">solo female travelers</a>, largely due to its <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/high-up-on-a-pakistani-mountain-a-success-story-for-moderate-islam/2015/07/22/f0b878d2-2572-11e5-b77f-eb13a215f593_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">liberal culture toward women</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Woman walking Hunza Valley" height="4854" width="6472" msid="100102550" hostid="261"></div><p>Hunza Valley is a remote area in Northern Pakistan. The Gatorade-blue rivers and snow-capped mountains make Hunza a popular tourist destination. The local community is known for its hospitality, and I immediately felt at home – something I'd never felt in big-city America.</p><p>The community is welcoming of outsiders — respecting and taking care of guests is a core value here. Before 9/11, there were droves of foreign travelers coming to Hunza, and many locals and their families worked in tourism, so I was welcomed readily. </p><div type="image" title="The Karakoram highway that cuts through Hunza" height="3648" width="4864" msid="100102551" hostid="261"></div><p>Hunza is home to a <a href="https://www.thejuggernaut.com/ismaili-muslims-pakistan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">majority Ismaili community</a>, a liberal sect of Islam. Teens hang out in mixed groups, women own restaurants and shops, and it's common for girls to receive higher education.</p><p>I settled in Hunza and have lived here for nearly two years.</p><h2><strong>Many Westerners I've spoken with have trepidations about Pakistan</strong></h2><h2><strong><div type="image" title="Shea sits with locals in a small seaside village on the border of Sindh and Balochistan in the far south of Pakistan." height="3448" width="4597" msid="100102553" hostid="261"></div></strong></h2><p>Hunza itself could not be safer. I don't worry about locking my bike, or even my doors. I've never witnessed a crime of any kind, nor any of the terrorist incidents the US State Department warns travelers of.</p><p>Barely a day after I'd arrived, I found myself lost on a 5-mile trek I set out on alone. Wandering, I ran into a young male shepherd. He insisted on showing me the route back and carrying my bag.</p><p>I kept waiting for "that moment" for which all solo female travelers are on high alert — but it never came. The shepherd was polite and helped me safely find the trail.</p><div type="image" title="Hunza valley in Northern Pakistan" height="1066" width="1422" msid="100102555" hostid="261"></div><p>I think I felt more comfortable in Hunza than I did in Miami for several reasons: The local cuisine shared many similarities with my Polish grandma's recipes, I experienced daily peace, and being surrounded by 20,000-foot peaks made me feel like I positively was on another planet.</p><div type="image" title="Traditional spread of Hunza foods." height="1405" width="1874" msid="100102558" hostid="261"></div><p>I didn't have great WiFi for the first few months of living in Hunza, which was stressful at times. I've since found work-arounds, but it's not simple. </p><h2><strong>The biggest issue is that electricity comes on for </strong><strong>only </strong><strong>around 5 or 6 hours a day, primarily at night</strong></h2><p>I knew Northern Pakistan didn't have great electricity from my 2019 trip to other mountain valleys. Regardless, I always travel with a power bank.</p><p>I remember times when the electricity wouldn't come on as planned and I'd forgotten to charge my devices properly. I found it incredibly stressful, especially if I had a lot of work.</p><div type="image" title="Cycling in the Hunza Valley" height="1410" width="1884" msid="100102560" hostid="261"></div><p>Once, while on a road trip through Upper Chitral, another mountainous region in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, my power bank fell in water and wouldn't turn on.</p><p>I was in an area even more remote than Hunza and knew the power bank likely wasn't sold anywhere in Pakistan. The bank amazingly came back to life, but I did end up breaking another one a year later.</p><p>When these things happen, it makes me miss conveniences like Amazon, but a company called Daraz does manage to deliver plenty of items to Hunza within two or three days. </p><p>Power banks and other electronics can also be sourced from other countries via Packr, an app I've used several times to receive items from the US.</p><p>Now I have a permanent home, I've arranged more long-term solutions. </p><p>I bought a $35 UPS car battery at a local market, which keeps my WiFi router and basic lights working 24/7. I also have two 26,800-mAh Anker power banks as backups, the 2nd of which I purchased after that road-trip scare.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Car battery for back up electricity." height="5304" width="7072" msid="100102562" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2><strong>How I live and work in Hunza Valley</strong></h2><p>One month of accommodation costs between $150 and $250 on average — a far cry from the $1,300 I paid in Miami to share an apartment with roommates.</p><p>My life in Hunza began in Gojal, the local name for the northern portion of the region. When I arrived, I stayed in hotels. Nowhere I stayed cost more than $15 a night, and if I got a long-stay rate, they averaged closer to $8 a night.</p><div type="image" title="Gate to a house in Hunza Valley" height="7477" width="4987" msid="100102564" hostid="261"></div><p>Hunza was slightly more expensive than I thought, especially before I found permanent accommodation. </p><p>I was shocked by how expensive some hotels were. Budget options are available, but a large portion of Hunza's tourism caters to the wealthy sector of the domestic market.</p><p>This experience has positively influenced my career as a freelancer. I've had my stories published in major media outlets. I also run an Instagram account and a YouTube channel focusing on life here and helping travelers plan their trips.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Shea speaking at a tourism event in Hunza" height="2274" width="3024" msid="100102569" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2><strong>I now live in Aliabad in central Hunza, the largest town in the district </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Samantha Shea and her boyfriend sat outside their house." height="1737" width="2316" msid="100102572" hostid="261"></div>I met my now partner, Fareed, in a local coworking space a few months after I arrived in Hunza. He was born and raised in Hunza and now works in trekking tourism.<p>We're happily settled in Aliabad in central Hunza, close to my partner's family, who have become a second family to me. </p><p>I've started learning Burushaski, one of the two major languages spoken in the valley. My partner speaks perfect English, so there's no language barrier.</p><p>Aliabad has high-speed fiber-cable WiFi, which makes uploading content or taking Zoom calls easy, and it's where you'll find amenities like ATMs, stores, small hospitals, and a few restaurants and shops.</p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Hunza Valley drone" height="3156" width="4208" msid="100102574" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Even so, Aliabad is still a village in many ways</strong></h2><p>The main roads are paved, but many residential areas have dirt roads. Everything from the doctor to my cellphone provider is within a 15-minute walking radius. </p><p>My partner and I moved into a house his parents owned. It had no electricity, flooring, or running water. We recently renovated two rooms and added a bathroom with running water and a Western toilet. It ended up costing about $3,000.</p><div type="image" title="Samantha Shea, a digital nomad stands with her boyfriends' mother and grandmother." height="2264" width="3019" msid="100102577" hostid="261"></div><p>If we were renting, it would cost around 20,000 Pakistani rupees a month, or about $50. Renting might have been cheaper in the short term, but I love having a space all our own.</p><p>A meal at a restaurant is usually between $2 for local spots and $7 for Western fare, but cooking at home is much less expensive and often tastier. As the original jet was waiting on a special windshield shipped from the UK that had to go through Indian customs, we hired a different jet to pick us up in Jaipur and take us onward to Jordan to continue the trip's itinerary. </p><p>My favorite part of my job is when we're at the end of the trip and the guests are super grateful for the life-changing experience they've had. We take our guests as close to the culture of a country as possible, and they leave the expeditions saying they've learned so much and broadened their mindset. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>A Tory Cabinet Minister <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3319765/A-rising-star-David-Cameron-s-Cabinet-sensationally-admitted-affair-claimed-one-Prime-Minister-s-election-aides-tried-blackmail-it.html">has admitted to</a> having an affair with the head of the Conservative Party's youth wing.</p><p>Robert Halfon, who is the deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, confessed to having an affair with Alexandra Paterson, the chair of Conservative Future, after he came to believe there was a plot to blackmail him.</p><p>According to the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3319765/A-rising-star-David-Cameron-s-Cabinet-sensationally-admitted-affair-claimed-one-Prime-Minister-s-election-aides-tried-blackmail-it.html">Mail on Sunday</a>, Halfon, who is 46 and has a partner, conducted the affair with 30-year-old Paterson at the East India Club, a private members club where he stays when he is in London. </p><p>Halfon says he admitted to the affair after <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3318983/Cabinet-Minister-sex-blackmail-plot-Politician-confesses-affair-Cameron-aide-accused-scheme-film-trysts.html">he came to believe that Mark Clarke</a>, the former head of RoadTrip (another Conservative party youth organisation), was planning to photograph him with Paterson in order to gain leverage over him.</p><p>When reached by Business Insider, Clarke said "I deny the allegation," but declined to comment further.</p><p>Halfon's revelation raises all sorts of questions about his past decisions for the party. For instance, back in April 2014, when Paterson was running to be chairman of Conservative Future, Halfon backed her for the role. He told <a href="http://www.theblueguerilla.co.uk/2014/08/exclusive-rob-halfon-mp-backs-team.html">thebluegorilla politics blog</a> that he was "delighted to hear that Alexandra is standing as the National Chairman of Conservative Future. I have every confidence she would make a wonderful CF Chairman."</p><p>Coincidentally, in the same week that Halfon made those comments, <a href="http://thingselliottsays.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Robert%20Halfon">Paterson travelled to his constituency</a> to canvass voters on his behalf. She was taking part in a trip organised by Mark Clarke.</p><p>The details of Halfon's affair also raise more questions about Clarke's <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/baroness-emma-pidding-house-of-lords-mark-clarke-bullying">alleged bullying while he was the head of RoadTrip, an organisation that mobilised young people to support MPs in marginal constituencies. </a></p><p>The Conservative Party is investigating allegations that he <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/baroness-emma-pidding-house-of-lords-mark-clarke-bullying">bullied young Tory activist Elliott Johnson</a> shortly before Johnson committed suicide. Johnson was allegedly threatened by Clarke on at least two occasions before his death. Very little is known about why Clarke felt threatened in the first incident. But Clarke took an audio recorder along for a second meeting with Clarke. On that occasion, Johnson <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3259016/Secret-tape-Tatler-Tory-bullying-suicide-victim-Menacing-blackmail-threats-young-activist-kangaroo-court-revenge-adultery-rumours.html">captured on tape</a> Clarke appearing to threaten to expose a minor mistake Johnson may have made in violation of election law, as a retaliation after the young activist complained to the Conservative Party about the first altercation.</p><p>Prior to Elliott's suicide, Clarke told this reporter in conversation that when he became an MP he would lobby for a position in the Cabinet by leaning on grateful MPs who he had helped propel to power.</p><p>Clarke is being investigated by the Conservative Party as part of a "disciplinary inquiry." It's unlikely he or his cook were the first people to put food between bread. This concept existed way before that, and even today, variations can be seen across the globe. So, let's take a look at some of the sandwiches you should try when traveling <keyword id="46661" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Around-the-world">around the world</keyword>.<br /><br />The Vietnamese bánh mì is a French baguette filled with either roast chicken or pork and fused with savory ingredients, like slices of cucumber, chili pepper, cilantro, sour pickled daikon, and carrot, mayo, and Maggi sauce. For many years the bánh mì has been a staple street food in Vietnam. French culture, including the French baguette, has heavily influenced Vietnamese culture because of the French occupation and colonization of Vietnam between the 17th and 20th centuries. The Vietnamese version of the French baguette is slightly fluffier. Similar to Vietnam's bánh mì, this Laotian sandwich also uses the French baguette.<br /><br />Khao jee can be found on almost every street corner in Laos. It's filled with pork belly, ham, tomato, lettuce, carrots, cheese, and chili sauce.<br /><br />The dönor kebab is an essential sandwich in Turkey. Pieces of seasoned meat are skewered onto a rotating spit and grilled vertically. Traditionally, lamb is the meat of choice, but nowadays other meats such as beef are used. The meat is shaved from the spit and placed between bread, topped with grilled vegetables, sauces, cheese, and a dash of lemon juice. You can find many variations of the dönor kebab all throughout Europe, especially in Germany. Berlin is filled with food stalls that sell the Turkish sandwiches. In the 1960s, Turkish citizens migrated to Germany as laborers. Turkish immigrant Kadir Nurman has been credited with creating the sandwich during the 1970s in Berlin, though it's likely that there was a similar concept that existed in Turkey as well.<br /><br />While its origins are a bit unclear, it's safe to say our love for the dönor kebab is very clear, due to the fact they're available worldwide. And since we're talking about love, this next sandwich is a personal favorite of mine because I grew up eating it.<br /><br />If you enjoy roast pork, you have to try it in Cuban bread, which is like a crispy baguette. It's layered with ham, cheese, pickles, mustard, and a little bit of garlic if you're up for it. The Cuban sandwich, or Cubano, is not actually even from Cuba. Yep, it was created in Tampa, Florida, by Cuban immigrants. But the influence of Cuba's love for roast pork shines through in this creation. However, if you're looking for a sandwich that actually originated in Cuba, try a medianoche. It's almost identical to a Cubano, except the bread is a sweet egg-based bread. Japan's popular katsu sando is a must-try.<br /><br />This sandwich is typically made with fried, breaded pork cutlets, a few shreds of cabbage, and tonkatsu sauce tucked between two slices of Japanese milk bread. Nowadays, any type of protein can be used, such as Wagyu beef, egg salad, or fish. Mr. Katsu in Southern California serves a 17-layer version of the pork katsu sando.<br /><br />This popular omelet sandwich has made its mark in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. You can find roti johns sold at street stalls throughout these three countries. A mixture of eggs, minced meat, onions, and cheese is spread onto a griddle. An open-faced baguette is placed on top and toasted over the omelet until the outside of the sandwich becomes crispy. Garnishes like sambal sauce, tomato sauce, and mayo can be added on top for extra flavor.<br /><br />300 million sandwiches are eaten by Americans each day. And according to a YouGov survey, America's favorite sandwich? The grilled cheese. Now, I can honestly say I've traveled around the world in search of great cheese, so I can appreciate a solid grilled cheese sandwich. We're here at Murray's Cheese, which was voted the best place to get a grilled cheese sandwich in New York City by my friend and coproducer Herrine Ro.<br /><br />Grilled cheese became an American classic after the 1920s. Presliced white bread and processed cheese became available, and soon American families were cooking it up in their homes. But this comfort food went beyond the household. It was found in government-issued cookbooks during World War II, and diners also began advertising it on menus.<br /><br />So, Murray's Cheese has basically perfected the grilled cheese sandwich by taking a special blend of cheese and butter and then sandwiching it between crispy bread. Oh, my gosh.<br /><br />Calling all cheese lovers! This Brazilian sandwich is called bauru. Slices of roast beef and melted cheese are tucked between a French roll along with tomatoes and pickles.<br /><br />China's steamed gua bao is a traditional favorite. It originated in Fuzhou and became popular in Taiwan when Fuzhounese immigrants brought it over. A flat steamed bao is folded over braised pork with sweet peanuts and coriander leaves.<br /><br />As you can see, this is much more than a sandwich. Portugal's Francesinha is typically eaten with a knife and fork. In the late 1950s, a French resident in Portugal named Daniel Silva created the sandwich. Francisinha translates to "little French lady." It's usually made with a stack of ham, steak, sausage, egg, and cheese and topped with a tangy sauce.<br /><br />In Guyana, this sandwich is a party and road-trip favorite. The quick recipe is ideal for any occasion, really. Cheese paste is more than just cheese between bread. Instead, sharp cheddar cheese is grated and mixed with butter, mayo, pepper, mustard, garlic, and pepper sauce. The creamy finish is spread between two slices of white bread.<br /><br />And since we're talking about spreads, India has a similar take. The chutney sandwich is a striking green or red spread laid between two slices of bread. For green chutney mix, use fresh cilantro and green chilies. Red chilies are used for the red spread.<br /><br />Uruguay is said to have some of the world's best beef. Chivito is a steak sandwich enjoyed all throughout the South American country. It's also Uruguay's national dish. According to legend, an Argentine tourist walked into a restaurant asking for a sandwich to be made with chivo, or baby goat. The chef didn't have any goat meat and instead grilled a thin piece of steak. Variations today include toppings like cheese, eggs, bacon, pepper, mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. It's also popular in Argentina, where it's known as lomito.<br /><br />Uruguay enjoys steak sandwiches, and so does Chile. This sandwich is called the chacarero. A roll holds thin churrasco steak with tomatoes, green beans, peppers, and mayo.<br /><br />Senegal's ndambe is a spicy bean sandwich. Black-eyed peas, which are really beans, are seasoned along with beef and spread between a baguette. Lentils are sometimes used instead. This type of sandwich is typically eaten for breakfast and is sold by street vendors all throughout Senegal.<br /><br />Sabich, from Israel, is a pita bread stuffed with fried eggplant, boiled eggs, salad, amba, and many other sauces. The sabich is actually an Iraqi-Israeli hybrid. When Iraqi Jewish refugees settled in Israel in the 1940s and '50s, they brought traditions like eating hard-boiled eggs, potatoes, and eggplant on Sabbath. Today, the sabich is a popular street food sold by vendors in Israel and is still eaten on the Sabbath.<br /><br />So, the UK is known for their love of chips, so why not make it a sandwich? A chip butty is simply thick-cut, deep-fried chips sandwiched between two buttered slices of white bread. Sauces like mayo and ketchup are added for flavor. You can find the chip butty in English fish-and-chip shops.<br /><br />South Africans enjoy hot chips stuffed in foot-longs. But this foot-long is for sharing. The Gatsby sandwich is typically sliced into four portions and served as a long loaf stuffed with slap chips, polony, and achar. Today, many variations of the Gatsby sandwich are available throughout Cape Town.<br /><br />This Finnish sandwich is called porilainen. A thick slice of pork sausage is placed between two slices of white bread. The hamburger-like sandwich includes onions, pickles, garlic, and your choice of condiment.<br /><br />Eaten in both Venezuela and Colombia, the arepa is a cornmeal pocket that is grilled, fried, or baked and filled with endless ingredients. Traditionally, arepas are cooked on flat griddles. They can be served with shredded meat, like chicken or beef, or with soft white cheese. It's a popular street food in both countries and can be eaten during any time of day.<br /><br />This Danish sandwich comes in many, many combinations. Smorrebrod is basically an open-faced sandwich. Its main ingredients include spreads like butter, cold meats, seafood, and scallions. It's typically garnished with lemon and herbs. It can probably get messy, so feel free to eat it with a knife and fork.<br /><br />Trinidad and Tobago's bake and shark is pretty iconic to the sister islands. Bake, or fried flatbread, is filled with a fusion of fried shark, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, and coleslaw. Sauces like garlic sauce, mustard, pepper sauce, and mango chutney add flavor.<br /><br />This spicy snack is sold at stalls in Pakistan, night and day. The bun kebab resembles a burger, with the patty typically being chicken, beef, or egg omelets. The patty is fried and served with onions and chutney.<br /><br />OK, those were a lot of sandwiches, but that just goes to show how important this portable meal is to so many cultures around the world. <p><span><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source on-image"><a href="http://imgur.com/a/uj8Rz">Courtesy of Vadim Sahakian and Artia Moghbel</a></p></div></div>Last year, Vadim Sahakian and Artia Moghbel, two friends from middle school, <span></span>did something most of us only daydream about. They quit their jobs and set off for a six-month adventure that took them across 13 countries in trucks, dirtbikes, and planes.</span></p>
<p>Sahakian, who worked in music production and multimedia, and Moghbel, who had a venture capital job working with early-stage startups, departed Los Angeles last August and headed to Alaska. They then roadtripped across the U.S. before visiting Africa and South and Central America.</p>

<p>To make the most of their trip, they were determined to avoid taking public transportation. "We had the itinerary in mind for a couple years and also knew that we did not want to travel from destination to destination by bus," Sahakian told Business Insider in an email. "Having our own transportation played a big role."</p>
<p>Each spent around $20,000 for the six-month trip, which included equipment and travel expenses. They spent a chunk of cash on a used truck in Alaska (which they later sold) and on motorcycles in Bolivia. The pair camped half the time, and spent the rest of their nights in hostels.</p>
<p>Sahakian said their biggest challenge was learning to ride dirt bikes in South America. "<span>It was our first time on dirt bikes and our primer for learning how to shift gears and repair motorcycles was watching YouTube videos a couple days before our flight," he wrote. "Luckily we found a way to fix all our problems and operate the bikes." </span></p>
<p><span>Sahakian and Moghbel are back where they left off: Sahakian runs the music label <a href="http://spiritcharity.com/">Spirit Charity</a>, and Moghbel is launching <a href="http://glean.co/">Glean</a>, an online network for educators. But returning to the road isn't far from their minds. "<span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">We've been talking about buying motorcycles in India, riding over the Himalayas and into Nepal," Sahakian told us. "Then hopping over to Mongolia to ride around on horseback. Still just a pipe dream though."</span></span></p>
