<div class="image-container"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div>After nearly a decade, <keyword id="6369689" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vin-Diesel">Vin Diesel</keyword> returns as cult favorite <keyword id="1634783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Riddick">Riddick</keyword>, a convict with the ability to see in the dark, in this weekend's follow-up to the 2004 film "Chronicles of Riddick."
The third film in the series from director David Twohy ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0878638/" target="_blank">The Fugitive</a>"), the film follows the gist of the two films that precede it with Riddick deserted on a hostile planet left to fend for himself.
The first two films were never major box-office hits. Instead, over the years, the series gained a cult following. ("<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pitchblack.htm" target="_blank">Pitch Black</a>" earned $53 million worldwide while the costly $105 million sequel "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=chroniclesofriddick.htm" target="_blank">The Chronicles of Riddick</a>" grossed $115 million in theaters.) 
"The reality is that I always envisioned the 'Riddick' franchise as a continuing mythology, so I always imagined that there would be many other films to follow," Diesel told <a href="http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2013/09/03/vin-diesel-discusses-riddick-sci-fi-fandom-and-the-future-of-film/" target="_blank">Spinoff Online</a>. "And yet, I do feel like I answered that growing request from the fans that said, 'Please make another Riddick.'"
After many were unfazed by the 2004 sequel "<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chronicles_of_riddick/" target="_blank">Chronicles of Riddick</a>," the new film returns to its roots channeling the first film in the series "Pitch Black."
The film is currently <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/riddick/" target="_blank">sitting at 59%</a> on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. 
No matter how the film is being reviewed, it's the perfect time to release the film - Diesel's riding the media wave after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-and-furious-6-has-127-million-weekend-2013-5" target="_blank">this summer's hugely successful "Fast &amp; Furious 6"</a> and the actor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/vin-diesel-hints-at-marvel-movie-on-facebook-2013-6" target="_blank">hinted at an appearance in a future Marvel movie</a>. 
It's clear the film is appealing to Diesel's wide fan base. According to a Fandango survey of more than 1,000 "Riddick" ticket-buyers, 89% are fans of the actor while 67% have seen all of his "Fast &amp; Furious" films in theaters.
Here's what you should know before seeing it:
The beginning is great.<div class="image-container"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div><a href="http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138091">Empire Magazine</a>:
"Largely wordless, the segment reminds us that Diesel still has charisma enough to hold our attention when he's the only human element on screen for 25 minutes, fending off scorpion beasts and taming feral CG wolf-bastards." 
<a href="http://www.timeout.com/us/film/riddick-movie-review" target="_blank">Time Out NY</a>:
"First things first, though-namely a terrific, mostly dialogue-free 20-minute opening during which Riddick acclimates to his new surroundings." 
<a href="http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews/film-review-riddick-1200597570/" target="_blank">Variety</a>: 
"If nothing in 'Riddick' ever quite tops that opening act, when it seems as though the entire movie might be a solo Diesel performance piece, even at its most conventional this is a solid, unpretentious B-movie entertainment of the sort John Carpenter was regularly turning out in the 1980s and '90s."
The dialogue isn't fantastic. Note: This happened with another big blockbuster this year (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-and-furious-6-reviews-what-the-critics-are-saying-2013-5" target="_blank">"Fast 6"</a>). It's not the end of the world. You're not heading out to see "Riddick" for dialogue.

"Plenty of bone crunching and blood gushing, along with some selective nudity, have boosted the movie's rating up to an "R," but lacking the distinctive visual style, robust production design and planet-hopping pace of its predecessor."
... and crude jokes.
<a href="http://www.laweekly.com/2013-09-05/film-tv/riddick-movie-review/" target="_blank">L.A. Weekly</a>:
"Instead, we must pan for scraps of pleasure … while trying not to get so riled up by all the rape jokes that we spin around and stab our seatmate ... Nothing says Strong Female Character like a savage babe who spends most of the film getting sexually harassed."
<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div>Don't expect anything mind-blowing. THR's Justin Lowe says the film <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/riddick/review/617571" target="_blank">doesn't take a lot of risks</a>.
"The latest installment feels tentative even at a flabby 120 minutes, more like a placeholder that barely advances the considerable Riddick mythology. Playing it safe with a script that offers Riddick up as a lone avenging hero, Twohy passes on the opportunity to effectively shade the character's distinctive dimensionality."
<a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/04/riddick-review" target="_blank">IGN</a>: 
"It's not to say there isn't entertainment value to be had in this - there are a few cool kills throughout - it's just that we've seen this all before."
Critics can't decide whether they enjoy the CGI planet Riddick inhabits or hate it.

"Watching this see-in-the-dark muscleman brooding against gorgeous otherworldly vistas, all while crafting pointy homemade weapons and befriending a scene-stealing CGI canine (no joke), is a sci-fi aficionado's delight." 
<a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/riddick/review/617571">THR</a>: 
 "While 'Chronicles' was a full-blown space opera, the current iteration is beset by unremarkable CGI effects and tethered to limited locations."
Overall, it's fun, campy, and everything that will keep the cult-following of the original film happy, should leave happy.

"It's precisely the movie I thought it would be: an overly macho Vin Diesel killing monsters and scumbags. Predictable and pedestrian, sure, but are you not getting exactly what you pay for? This is a Riddick movie not a Harold Pinter drama."

"And where 'Chronicles' overdosed on cartoonish CGI, 'Riddick' returns to the 'Pitch Black' formula of mixing animated elements with practical effects and puppetry, creating a tactile otherworldly environment that ranges from the sets to the props to the creatures (designed by the great Patrick Tatopoulos) themselves."
Overall Consensus: If you're a fan of the series, and Vin Diesel, see it. 
The film clearly knows its audience. We're not worried about its box-office performance this weekend. The film is the fan favorite for the weekend on Fandango - not that that's a great feat. There honestly isn't much else out, unless a <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/salinger/" target="_blank">poorly reviewed documentary on J.D. Salinger</a> ("Catcher in the Rye" author) sounds appealing.

'Riddick' Reviews: Vin Diesel Fans Will Be Happy After Waiting Nearly A Decade For The Sequel

"It doesn't really matter what people say. If they like it, great. It's just that you grow, you evolve, and you're finding these different coping mechanisms, and you're finding these different ways to reenergize," she continued."It's awesome when you can look to the left and right, see the progress that you're making, and see that your collaborators are also making that. And you can hear it in the <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> as well."Leon Thomas III, one-half of production duo The Rascals, met Grande when they were both cast on Nickelodeon's "Victorious" as teenagers (<a href="https://www.insider.com/victorious-cast-then-and-now-photos-2019-3">as André Harris and Cat Valentine, respectively</a>). He and his partner, Khris Riddick-Tynes, previously produced five songs on Grande's debut, "Yours Truly."And while The Rascals worked on "Positions" for just two days in the spring, he similarly took stock of Grande's "sparkle" and refreshed, centered energy."There was a real sense of this musical community, from Tayla to Victoria [Monét], to Tommy [Brown] and Ariana. We've been building since we were teenagers, and to see it all come back around — it's just really cool to grow with your friends," Thomas said."The fact that Ariana is operating [music-editing software] Pro Tools herself, and personally vocal-producing a lot of the songs on this album, was amazing," he continued. "I mean the attention to detail that she can now give to each song has grown exponentially.""I also think Ariana did an amazing job of controlling the room — being like, 'Hey, you're going to turn the party down. It's time to get busy on this,'" Riddick-Tynes said. "She's telling her story. She had to get comfortable with that.""Well, there was definitely some wine flowing," Thomas added, laughing.<h2>'Everything just happened really organically'</h2><h2><div type="image" title="ariana grande the rascals" height="900" width="1200" msid="79129723" hostid="261"></div></h2>Back in March, Thomas was in touch with Grande about <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B-RItdEg_PX/">a virtual "Victorious" reunion</a> when she invited him to hear some new music.Riddick-Tynes tagged along, laptops in hand. Right off the bat, Grande picked two different beats the duo had been working on. These became "Nasty" and "Safety Net.""Everything just happened really organically," Riddick-Tynes said. "For 'Nasty,' we did that a few months before, and it was just sitting there. But a few days before the session, we pulled it up and began tweaking it and adding that — that bounce was like, 'Man, I wonder if like, DaBaby and somebody could do this. I'm almost debating a DaBaby and Mariah Carey vibe,'" he explained."That was one of the ones that we knew, OK, we're going to play her this one. Like, you can shake that a-- to this song," he continued, laughing."She made it work and did a phenomenal job. Just hearing her range on that particular record — I mean, she's all the way up there. And it's really great to work with a vocalist who can stretch so much over our production."The Ty Dolla $ign-featuring <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBBZeJhteRE">"Safety Net"</a> is a bit more sobering: an atmospheric slow-jam that grapples with the competing fear and comfort of a new relationship.Thomas — who came up with the central lyric, "Tripping, falling, with no safety net" — said the song was inspired by "a conversation about free-falling into real love.""We both were kind of just geeking out about our newfound loves," Thomas told Insider, referring to <a href="https://www.insider.com/ariana-grande-dalton-gomez-relationship-timeline">Grande's boyfriend Dalton Gomez, whom she's been dating for about 10 months</a>."That's really my friend. I mean, we did the four seasons of television together. So, it was just really good catching up on that front," he continued. "And we were able to implement this great energy into the song. We just kind of bottled it up."<h2>Three of the songs that Parx cowrote — 'My Hair,' 'Love Language,' and 'POV' — also provide colorful peeks into Grande's domestic life</h2>Parx said work on "Positions" began somewhat spontaneously, with group hangouts and heart-to-hearts. "She started off with what she wanted to talk about — which, for her, is always something that comes from a really genuine place and where she is in life at that moment," she explained. "So we started there with just trying to get out realistically where she is emotionally.""That's the one thing that I can say about Ariana, is that she really thrives in areas when she is being genuinely herself," Parx added. "She's funny. She sees life from an incredible perspective, you know what I mean? I was always saying, 'I want to hear more of you in your music.'"True to form, most of the songs that boast Parx's writing also bear unmistakable shades of vulnerability (she was the person <a href="https://www.insider.com/tayla-parx-dance-alone-songwriting-ariana-grande-thank-u-next-2020-5">who encouraged Grande to name-check her exes on "Thank U, Next," after all</a>).<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sujm6756pZU">"My Hair,"</a> for example, was inspired by Parx's desire to use Grande's iconic hairstyle as a symbol for intimacy: If you put something on for the world (in this case, hair extensions), then to let a loved one touch what's underneath is a tender sign of trust."I feel like it makes so much sense. We've seen the struggle from <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-ariana-grande-wears-ponytail-2018-7">when she was dying her hair red for that TV show on Nickelodeon</a>, and then to the ponytail — she's <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrity-style-beauty-hair-transformations-since-becoming-famous-2019-1">really had an evolution with her hairstyling</a>," Parx explained. The concept aims to help couples communicate more effectively by recognizing how each person prefers to give and receive love."When you can learn the way that somebody communicates — and the way that you communicate, by the way — it's a lot easier to be able to get through whatever," Parx explained. "My love language is definitely acts of service."She added that Grande's primary love language is "definitely" physical touch."She needs to hear it, she needs to feel it and see it," Parx said. "It's <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-are-cancers-zodiac-2019-6">the Cancer in her</a>."But for Parx — and many fans, judging by reactions on Twitter — the album's emotional summit is the final track, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQJEp-k-ogs">"POV."</a> It's the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkzAHh6Y3e0">"Residue"</a> singer's personal favorite."I just know I've seen the growth in her with her relationships, with herself, and all of those different things. It's a song that I knew just needed to be said," Parx explained."I just love the vulnerability in it. I love the vocal performance, of course. But I think lyrically, hearing something raw like that — and it just came so naturally as well."<h2>Most songs on 'Positions' began with melodies, rather than lyrics</h2>The first song written for the album was the opening track, "Shut Up," largely penned by Grande and Parx alongside producers TBHits, Mr. Franks, Travis Sayles, and violinist Peter Lee Johnson.Parx said they began with the hook and originally weren't sure if it should be an interlude, or even included on the album at all. But they were sold by the song's heavenly orchestra of vocals and harmonies."Personally, I wanted to hear her sing on this album," she explained. "I wanted those moments where we had that reminder of what an extremely incredible vocalist she is. 'Shut Up' is one of those moments."Grande <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0n_aqCcTVk">similarly told Zach Sang</a> that one of her goals for this album was to flex her voice more, rather than simply "making fun bops.""Ariana as a writer is melodically driven, and then the lyrics usually come after," Parx explained. "Her ear goes towards these things that are really beautiful. That's my thing, too. Growing up, I was listening to the pretty R&amp;B and pop melodies of the '90s."Often, Parx said, Grande would be compelled to continue layering vocals and instruments "until we couldn't figure out any more.""You can always bring it back down," she said, laughing. "But you might as well just take it all the way first, you know what I mean?""I mean, why do a regular arrangement if you don't have to? I think that this is a time to really explore," she continued, noting the offbeat outro of "Love Language" as an example."You have an artist that's brave enough to do things like that and really say, 'OK, let's try to break another boundary.' How Vin Diesel helped save the 'Fast and Furious' franchise from going straight to video

With Ron Howard's car-racing film "Rush" making its wide release this Friday and a poorly-received dancing flick out this weekend, the only real competition for the Warner Bros. movie came from horror scare sequel "Insidious 2." 
While the Film District movie packed a punch opening weekend, it failed to catch on with word of mouth this weekend.
Out of the top ten this week is "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=onedirection.htm" target="_blank">One Direction: This Is Us.</a>" The boyband concert film which has earned $62 million worldwide has been on a downward track since it's opening a month ago.
Matt Damon's futuristic "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=elysium.htm" target="_blank">Elysium</a>" and "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=percyjackson2.htm" target="_blank">Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters</a>" also end their seven-week run at the top of the box office.
Here are this week's winners and losers in <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword>:
10. Disney's "Cars" spinoff "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=planes.htm" target="_blank">Planes</a>" rounds out the top ten with $2.9 million. The $50 million animated film has made $155 million worldwide.
9. Warner Bros.' re-release of "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wizardofozimax.htm">The Wizard of Oz</a>" in 3D and IMAX drew in $3 million. The film is celebrating it's 75th anniversary this year.
8. Universal's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=riddick.htm">Riddick</a>" sequel featuring Vin Diesel dropped five spots after three weeks earning $3.6 million. The film has now made $74 million, the least of all the series' films. 
7. Weinstein's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=butler.htm">Lee Daniels' The Butler</a>" takes in another $4.3 million. The historical film featuring Forest Whitaker and Oprah has earned $109 million worldwide. 
6. Surprise comedy hit "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=werethemillers.htm">We're the Millers</a>" is still going strong in week seven with another $4.7 million. Jennifer Aniston's return to the big screen has earned a huge $222 million worldwide. 
5. Sony Gem's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=planetbboy3d.htm">Battle of the Year</a>" dance film opened to a slow start with $5 million. The film, starring Chris Brown and Josh Holloway ("Lost"), cost an estimated $20 million to produce. To be fair, whether or not it was because of Brown and his trouble with the law, there wasn't a lot of marketing for the dance film. However, the flick could have benefitted from showcasing it's "Lost" star Holloway.
4. Lionsgate indie flick "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=instructionsnotincluded.htm">Instructions Not Included</a>" continues to do well in its fourth week with $5.7 million. The dramedy about a Mexican playboy raising a daughter alone has been doing increasingly well at the box office each weekend. So far, the film has made $34 million. 
3. Robert De Niro's mafia movie "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=malavita.htm">The Family</a>" fell more than 50% this week earning $7 million. The Relativity film cost an estimated $30 million. 
2. The horror success of last weekend "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=insidious2.htm">Insidious Chapter 2</a>" falls hard in week two with $14.5 million. The Film District movie debuted to a huge $40 million so that's a big drop in week two. With a $65 million haul so far, the sequel is a huge success considering it was made on a $5 million budget. 
1. Hugh Jackman's thriller "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=prisoners.htm">Prisoners</a>" had little competition this weekend earning $21 million. The film received rave initial reviews saying this was Jackson's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/prisoner-reviews-what-critics-are-saying-2013-9" target="_blank">best performance of his life</a>. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=prisoners.htm">Prisoners</a>" still has a way to go to hit its $46 million budget. After seeing the film this weekend, word of mouth should help the film pick up in the weeks to come.
