A day before the billionaire's tweet, only several hundred Twitter users had engaged with the hashtag $Doge. But engagement had soared by over 16,000% a day later, with over 55,000 Twitter users joining in, according to data from the social-analysis platform Cyabra.</p><p>In the Dogecoin community's latest attempt to beat the coin's all-time high, investors are <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/mqhkpw/042_on_420/">eyeing a target of $0.42</a> on Tuesday, April 20, or "Doge Day."</p><p>After Dogecoin peaked at a record $0.41 this week, the online trading platform Robinhood began to experience major <a href="https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/trading/robinhood-faces-outage-again-due-to-unprecedented-crypto-demand/">crypto trading outages</a> due to unprecedented demand. That meant many investors were unable to join in on Dogecoin's rally at its peak. This is similar to the GameStop situation in January, when traders were unable to get in on the booming stock because activity <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/robinhood-restricts-gamestop-stock-trading-23-companies-app-2021-1">was restricted</a> following high demand.</p><p>Here's why a currency that was started as a joke is now surging in popularity, according to nine experts.</p><h2>Disruption to the financial elite</h2><p>"Dogecoin is a lighthearted and authentic community built upon a serious cryptocurrency infrastructure. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> says it has banned 287 UK MPs from entering the country in retaliation to sanctions.</li><li>Russia's foreign ministry said the bans are because British MPs are creating "Russophobic hysteria."</li></ul><p>Russia has sanctioned nearly 300 British MPs in retaliation for restrictions imposed on members of its parliament, the Duma, last month, but has included a number of politicians who are no longer serving. </p><p>In its list of 287 individuals, the Kremlin has targeted current ministers including Cabinet Office minister Steve Barclay, minister for Brexit opportunities Jacob Rees-Mogg, trade minister Penny Mordaunt, and solicitor general Alex Chalk, as well as senior MPs such as Jeremy Hunt, Steve Baker, David Davis and Julian Lewis. </p><p>However Russia has also gone after Rory Stewart, Dominic Grieve and Sarah Wollaston, who haven't been MPs since the 2019 election, and Charlie Elphicke, who stepped down after being found guilty on three counts of sexual assault. </p><p>In another error, Tory MP Heather Wheeler's name appears twice, as the 18th and 206th entries, meaning there are actually just 286 names on the list. Meanwhile Alun Cairns' name has been misspelled. </p><p><a href="https://mid.ru/ru/foreign_policy/news/1810980/#sel=11:1:J1Q,11:6:HJo">According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,</a> the politicians listed "cannot visit the Russian Federation from now on."</p><p>A translation of a statement reported by state-owned Russian news agency RIA Novosti said the sanctions were being applied "on the basis of reciprocity," following the decision to <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-sanctions-386-duma-members-over-support-for-luhansk-and-donetsk/">sanction 386 members of the Duma after they backed Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine</a>.</p><p>"These persons, who are now banned from entering the Russian Federation, took the most active part in the establishment of anti-Russian sanctions instruments in London (and) contribute to the groundless whipping up of Russophobic hysteria in the UK," it read.</p><p>"The hostile rhetoric and far-fetched accusations coming from the lips of British parliamentarians not only condone the hostile course of London, aimed at demonizing our country and its international isolation, but are also used by opponents of a mutually respectful dialogue with Russia to undermine the foundation of bilateral co-operation."</p><p>Prime Minister <keyword id="11911533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="boris-johnson" source="Orion">Boris Johnson</keyword>, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and 10 other senior politicians — mostly members of the Cabinet — have already been barred. Theresa May, the former prime minister, was also on the initial list. </p><p>"Taking into account London's bet on the consistent strengthening of anti-Russian sanctions, work on countermeasures, including the expansion of the Russian 'stop list,' will continue," it added. </p><p>Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions shortly after the list was published, Boris Johnson said those on the list "should regard it as a badge of honour".</p><p>He vowed that the UK "keep up our robust and principled support for the Ukrainian people and their right to protect their lives, their families, and to defend themselves".</p><p>Chris Bryant, the senior Labour MP and prominent critic of the Putin regime, told the Commons he was "absolutely distressed that I am not on the list…  and if I am honest slightly surprised". </p><p>He added: "I can only assume the Russian Federation accepts every single thing I have said about President Putin over the last few years is true. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6358378" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="amc">AMC</keyword> CEO <keyword id="842244" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adam-Aron">Adam Aron</keyword> has reached out to the army of retail investors backing his company. </li><li>He's taken to Twitter and YouTube to reach them, and has even picked up popular Reddit investing lingo. </li><li>Analysts say the new communication strategy could be to help shore up the balance sheet and get more patrons to the movies. </li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amc-stock-price-ceo-gift-sons-500000-shares-30-million-2021-6-1030492659">Adam Aron</a> is a CEO for the meme-stock generation. </p><p>Aron, the 66-year-old chief executive officer of <keyword id="320652" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="AMC-Entertainment">AMC Entertainment</keyword>, has embraced the company's status as a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/market-analysts-warn-against-meme-stock-gambling-as-amc-whipsaws-2021-6-1030492938">meme stock</a> in recent months during earnings calls, on Twitter and YouTube, in press releases, and even in monetary donations. He's even offered free popcorn.</p><p>The more than 3 million <keyword id="1141292" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail-traders">retail traders</keyword> holding shares of the company have helped drive <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amc-stock">AMC's stock price</a> up about 2,300% this year.</p><p>The individual investors, mobilized on Reddit investing threads and Twitter, call each other "apes," and to them, Aron is "Silverback" - a gorilla pack leader. "All hail the silverback," one Redditor said in a Friday post. </p><p>The Harvard Business School graduate has bucked the trend of other CEOs who have remained virtually silent on their company's status as a retail-trader favorite and instead reached out to the horde of fans of AMC stock.</p><p>On the May 6 earnings call, Aron called them "an army of passionate, interested individual shareholders." </p><p>"They own AMC. We work for them. I work for them. So, by definition, their interests and passions are important to AMC. Their interests and passions are important to me," he said, according to a <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4425374-amc-entertainment-holdings-inc-s-amc-ceo-adam-aron-on-q1-2021-results-earnings-call">transcript from Seeking Alpha</a>. </p><p>The millions of traders make up about 80% of the company's shareholder base. </p><p>"Why would you not recognize them? Why would you not embrace them?" Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers told Insider. "Management is supposed to be working on behalf of the shareholders, and those are your holders."</p><p>Aron may be signaling a new era of communicating with individual shareholders, said David Jones, Chief Market Strategist at European investment trading platform, Capital.com. AMC and Aron did not respond to Insider's request for comment for this article. </p><p>"We are used to CEOs speaking at stuffy shareholder meetings, and only showing interest in their large institutional investors," Jones said. "And it's going to be quite public. I've started tweeting again." </p><p>His Twitter account had been relatively dormant since his time running the Philadelphia 76ers, but now he often tweets multiple times a day. </p><p>"I have started to follow Apes, about 500 so far, to get a first hand sense of what our community is thinking snd saying," he tweeted on <a href="https://twitter.com/CEOAdam/status/1393763485494939648?s=20">May 15</a>.</p><p>He's also retweeted a poll from a <a href="https://twitter.com/CEOAdam/status/1391251423367737345?s=20">fan account of Wall Street Bets</a>, the Reddit thread with more than 10 million followers that originally made its name driving up shares of <keyword id="363661" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="GameStop">GameStop</keyword> earlier this year. He's even shared a <a href="https://twitter.com/CEOAdam/status/1390494963830509570?s=20">photo of a gorilla</a> and a video of a plane flying with the flag "<a href="https://twitter.com/CEOAdam/status/1389773819313901568?s=20">AMC to the moon</a>," a popular phrase among retail traders referencing a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/reddit-wall-street-bets-lingo-guide-glossary-yolo-diamond-hands-2021-5-1030450777">meme stock's price potential</a>.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-Adam Aron  (@CEOAdam) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1392552936002236422?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 12, 2021</a></blockquote><p>On June 3, the CEO reached out to his shareholders in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-EkPZMIAeM">YouTube video with Trey's Trades</a>, a popular retail investing channel with nearly 300,000 subscribers. He referenced the investing "apes" as he made an argument for the company's hope to sell <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amc-issue-25-million-shares-rally-acquisitions-adam-aron-2021-6-1030494850">25 million more shares</a>.</p><p>The "ape" references don't stop there. Aron announced on an earnings call that he would donate $50,000 of his money and $50,000 of AMC Cares money to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which helps endangered gorillas in Africa, as noted in the 1988 film "Gorillas in the Mist" - which he dubbed "extraordinary and heartwarming."</p><p>"The passions of our shareholders become our passions, too," he said on the call. </p><p>On June 2, AMC announced a new initiative called AMC Investor Connect, in which company shareholders can get perks, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amc-launches-program-to-communicate-with-day-traders-2021-6-1030487898">like free popcorn</a>, and direct communications with Aron. </p><h2>Playing with fire</h2><p>All of the outreach to retail traders could be a multi-faceted endeavor, market analysts told Insider. </p><p>The company has a heavy debt load and has flirted with bankruptcy in the past. The COVID-19 pandemic presented another set of hurdles as movie theaters shuttered and more entertainment options became available for streaming.</p><p>"I certainly tip my hat to the CEO who was in a tough desperate situation and has made the most of it to keep his business alive and maybe even one day thrive," said Richard Smith, an investing and market cycles expert. </p><p>As shares rallied to all-time highs this week, the company issued more stock. Thursday alone, the company sold 11.6 million shares for $587 million after a $230 million sale of $8.5 million shares to hedge fund <keyword id="10669846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mudrick-capital">Mudrick Capital</keyword>, which the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amc-stock-price-jumps-redditors-overpower-hedge-fund-share-sale-2021-6-1030487087">hedge fund later sold for a profit</a>. </p><p>"If the market says that your stock is worth X and you have an opportunity to sell some of it at prices that really allow you to shore up your balance sheet in a very inexpensive way, I think you'd be imprudent if you didn't do that," Sosnick said. </p><p>"The AMC CEO is catering to the crowd because he knows they're making shares more valuable. He's happy to cater to the retail investors if they push up the share price," said Lars-Alexander Kuehn, associate professor of finance at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business.</p><p>Smith, the CEO of The Foundation for the Study of Cycles, said Aron also sees the shareholders as movie-theater patrons. </p><p>"He needs those people to support his business," he said. How AMC CEO Adam Aron embraced the company's meme status and helped send its stock to unfathomable heights

Ben Ray Lujan, D-NM, before Smith's opening remarks.</span></p><p><span>"Unfortunately, if fraudsters destroy my constituents' savings and financial futures, there's no golden parachute awaiting them," he added.</span></p><p><span>"The American people deserve answers, and I hope you are prepared to provide them."</span></p><p><span>Last week, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-ceo-out-2017-9">Smith stepped </a></span><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-ceo-out-2017-9">down from Equifax</a>, the consumer-data giant targeted in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-you-shouldnt-freak-out-about-the-equifax-breach-ftc-identity-theft-credit-card-report-2017-9">a hack that exposed the personal data</a> of nearly half the US population. He was answering questions from a congressional panel on Tuesday. </span></p><p><span>Committee members have asked about the company's failure to fix software vulnerabilities, as well as chief legal officer John Kelley (who is still employed at the company) and his role as head of security, and what Smith knew when he was first notified of the breach in late July.</span></p><p><span>During the hearing, Rep. Joe Barton, R-TX, suggested during the hearing that credit-reporting agencies should be required to pay consumers when hacked.</span></p><p><span>"You're just required to notify everybody and say, 'So sorry, so sad,'" he said. "We can have this hearing every year from now on if we don't do anything to change the current system."</span></p><p><span>"It would seem to me that you might pay a little more attention if you had to pay everybody whose account got hacked a couple thousand bucks or something," he added.</span></p><p><span>Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, meanwhile, suggested the credit-reporting industry is underregulated.</span></p><p><span>In September, Equifax reported a massive data breach, saying hackers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-hackers-may-have-accessed-personal-details-143-million-us-customers-2017-9">may have accessed the personal details</a>, including names and Social Security numbers, of more than 143 million consumers from mid-May to July. The company previously announced that the consumer-data firm's CIO, David Webb, and its chief security officer, Susan Mauldin, were also <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/equifax-cyberattack-hackers-executives-retiring-2017-9-1002375933">retiring</a>. Webb will be replaced by Mark Rohrwasser, who joined the company last year, Equifax said in an emailed statement. Mauldin will be replaced by Russ Ayres. Both Rohrwasser and Ayers previously worked in Equifax's IT division.</span></p><p>Equifax officials are also reportedly being investigated by the US Justice Department after selling stock before the company revealed a data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of Americans.</p><p>A<span>ccording to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-09-18/equifax-stock-sales-said-to-be-focus-of-u-s-criminal-probe">Bloomberg</a>, the department is looking at sales by Equifax's CFO, John Gamble; president of US information solutions, Joseph Loughran; and president of workforce solutions, Rodolfo Ploder. The three senior executives <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-executives-sold-shares-after-the-company-learned-of-a-massive-hack-2017-9">dumped almost $2 million worth of stock</a> days after the company learned of the breach, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show. An emailed statement from the credit-monitoring agency said the executives "had no knowledge" of the breach beforehand.</span></p><p><span>All the executives still owned thousands of shares of the company after the sales were completed, <a href="https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?CIK=0000033185&amp;action=getcompany">filings</a> show.</span></p><p><span><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/EFX-Quote">Equifax</a> shares were down 0.2% at $107.59 at 10:59 a.m. ET. Now, Equifax says that it was 146.6 million people who had their name and date of birth exposed, and 145.5 million of those who had their social security number (SSN) exposed. </span></p><p><span>Furthermore, 27.3 million people had their gender exposed, 20.3 million had their phone number exposed, and 1.8 million people had their email addresses exposed. In the filing, Equifax expressed its view that under the law, this information wasn't considered sensitive enough to warrant a new notification to customers. </span></p><p><span>Also troublesome for consumers is that Equifax announced its online resolution portal - where customers can dispute items in their credit report - was breached, too. This means that 56,200 passports, driver's licenses, security cards, taxpayer IDs and other personal documents were also leaked. Speaking for everyone on the Board, I sincerely apologize. Equifax says 2.5 million more people might have been affected by the hack than previously thought

The US Justice Department is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-executives-sold-shares-after-the-company-learned-of-a-massive-hack-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">looking into sales of Equifax stock</a> by executives before news of the breach was made public.</p><p>Elizabeth Warren and 11 other Democratic senators <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-elizabeth-warren-launches-investigation-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">launched an investigation</a> into the massive data breach, and announced a plan to introduce a bill to give consumers the ability to freeze their credit for free.</p><p>But fewer than 1% of consumers have put a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/equifax-breach-how-to-protect-credit-identity-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">credit freeze in place</a>, according to a new report from credit monitoring site <a href="https://www.creditsesame.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CreditSesame</a>. Of the nearly four million TransUnion credit reports Credit Sesame analyzed, 0.32% had a credit freeze in place, and 7% had a fraud alert.</p><p>Freezing your credit, which typically costs $5-10 each time you do it, requires contacting all three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. New credit activity - fraudulent as well as legitimate - will be prevented until you lift the freeze. A <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0275-place-fraud-alert" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fraud alert</a> is free, and requires lenders to verify your identity before issuing new credit.</p><p>"Data breaches involving Social Security numbers are not rare, but this is the largest ever recorded," Eva Velasquez, CEO of the <a href="http://www.idtheftcenter.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Identity Theft Resource Center</a>, a nonprofit that assists fraud victims, <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/09/11/technology/equifax-identity-theft/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told CNN</a>.</p><p>Fraud alerts and credit freezes may prevent would-be thieves from opening new accounts, but it won't stop the most common type of identity theft in the US: attempted or successful misuse of an existing account.</p><p>About 7% of Americans age 16 or older - 17.6 million people - were victims of some type of identity theft in 2014, according to the most recent <a href="https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/press/vit14pr.cfm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bureau of Justice Statistics</a> (BJS) data. The majority - 86% - experienced fraudulent use or attempted use of a current account, such as a credit card or bank account.</p><p>Other types of identity theft - misuse of personal information to open a new account, obtain government benefits, or provide false information during a crime or traffic stop - are less common, affecting 4% of identity theft victims.</p><p>Victims of identity theft - who are <a href="https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/vit14.pdf">more likely to be white and have annual incomes over $75,000</a> - spent an average of seven hours resolving problems associated with the crime, according to the BJS. Since banks and credit card companies typically reimburse for unauthorized account use, only 14% of victims suffered an out-of-pocket financial loss. These days, it seems celebrities' personal lives are mere fodder for the public's enjoyment.</p><p>"Step inside the fairytale and see how it feels to be a real princess," the <a href="http://www.dismaland.co.uk/map/">official Park Map says</a>. "Souvenir photos available."</p><p>It appears the fairytale isn't all it's cracked up to be.</p><p>Throughout her life, Princess Diana battled bitterly for her privacy. <span>What started as the public's interest in the seemingly storybook romance of Lady Di and </span>Prince Charles<span> of Wales led to rumors of affairs, probing by the press, and a <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/WORLD/9708/31/diana.paparazzi/">restraining order</a> against one particularly invasive photographer.
