<keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Moon">Moon</keyword>ing over the Moon might be considered poetic, but here we are, eagerly waiting for a celestial wonder that will happen bang on Friday, January 31. Well, most people and sites claim that the D-day is January 30 but other organisations are of the opinion that here in India, we are going to see the <keyword id="586617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="supermoon">supermoon</keyword> (or the closest thing to it, you may say) rise on January 31 at around 3.30 pm in the afternoon. And this is the <keyword id="2036317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Second-supermoon">second supermoon</keyword> of the month. The first supermoon came up on New Year’s Day and two supermoons in a single calendar month won’t happen again until January 2018, according to EarthSky.org. 
 But hold on – you must be wondering by now what this supermoon is all about. As the name suggests, supermoon is the biggest ever Moon one gets to see when the Moon is at its <keyword id="1930781" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="perigee">perigee</keyword> – the point in its orbit that is closest to <keyword id="6359982" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="earth">Earth</keyword>. The term was coined by <keyword id="6457573" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="astrologer">astrologer</keyword> <keyword id="596435" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Richard-Nolle">Richard Nolle</keyword> over 30 years ago and he clarified the supermoon as “a new or <keyword id="89794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Full-Moon">full moon</keyword> which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” 
 Now you understand that there’s a catch. The Moon can be closest to our planet and we may still not see it, if it’s a <keyword id="73018" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Moon">new moon</keyword> – a time when the Moon lies directly between the Sun and the Earth and we can’t see its illuminated surface. Earlier, the supermoon was called perigee full moon or perigee new moon as the case might be. 
 Supermoon appears about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the usual full moon, according to <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NASA">NASA</keyword>. However, both supermoons in January 2014 happen to be new moons, which mean even this time, it will be barely visible in the <keyword id="1248733" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="night-sky">night sky</keyword>. But don’t lose heart. According to <keyword id="681245" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SPACE-Foundation">Space Foundation</keyword>, an organisation aiming to popularise astronomy, the young moon (the phase just after the new moon) will rise at around 3.30 pm in the afternoon of January 31 and it always looks great when the Moon is hanging near the horizon. 
 “That is when illusion mixes with reality to produce a truly stunning view,” according to NASA. “For reasons not fully understood by <keyword id="49623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Astronomers">astronomers</keyword> or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects.” 
 
But even if it doesn’t show up on Thursday-Friday (January 30-31), three more supermoons will be coming up this year – on July 12, August 10 and September 9. And they will be all full moons, which are bound to look spectacular. Especially the August supermoon, as it will be closest to the Earth this year – some 356,896 km away. The full moon on March 19, 2011, was even closer, just 356,577 km away from the Earth. The last time the full moon was so close was in 1993, according to NASA. It was about 20% brighter and 15% bigger than a regular full moon. 
 
However, the perigee or the nearest point between the Earth and the Moon can vary by as much as the Earth’s diameter. On an average, the Moon is about 30 Earth diameters away from the planet. 
 Interestingly, we also had a <keyword id="2036315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Minimoon">minimoon</keyword> on January 15 this year. A minimoon is nothing but a full moon at its apogee – the point in its orbit that is farthest from the Earth. Therefore, it is the smallest-in-size full moon when you watch it in the sky. 
 
As is common with any other astronomical phenomenon, the supermoon got its fair share of blame for a lot of maladies – right from causing insanity to devastating floods. Although those things are nothing but fiction, here is one alarming fact. The Moon is moving away from us and it could be totally gone one fine night. According to scientists, it was only 22,530 km away from the Earth in the beginning but now, it is about 384,402 km away. It has been found that the dear old egghead is gaining strength from Earth’s rotational energy and uses it to propel itself about 3.8 cm higher in its orbit. So it could really be bye-bye Moon one day and we suggest that you have your fill of it while it is still there.

This led to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-kill-himself-poll-2019-11">a proliferation of conspiracy theories</a> about what really happened the night before guards found him dead by hanging in his cell, and in November 2019, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-kill-himself-poll-2019-11">an Insider poll found</a> nearly half of Americans believed Epstein was murdered.Was Epstein allowed to kill himself? How could the jail leave the highest-profile criminal defendant in America alone? Why weren't the cameras on his cell block working? "The Department's abject failure in this high-profile situation raises serious concerns about its ability to protect and secure inmates in the many cases that do not make the <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword>."Before Epstein's death, senators had also urged Horowitz to investigate the conduct of Alexander Acosta. As a US attorney in Florida in 2007, Acosta <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article220097825.html">struck a deal</a> with Epstein's attorneys that allowed the financier to plead guilty to state-level solicitation of a minor charges instead of more severe federal charges. Instead, the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility conducted an investigation, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/jeffrey-epstein-alex-acosta-florida-plea-deal/2020/11/12/c960d078-243a-11eb-8672-c281c7a2c96e_story.html">which attorneys for Epstein's victims found toothless</a>.It's not clear whether Horowitz briefed the senators about his investigation into Epstein's death in the years since they published their letter. Representatives for the four senators did not reply to Insider's requests for comment. A spokesperson for Horowitz's office declined to comment about the investigation's progress.<h2>Epstein's jail guards have been interviewed</h2>Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, the two MCC guards who were supposed to be watching Epstein the night he died, were both questioned as part of the OIG's investigation.Federal prosecutors <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/indictment-against-epstein-guards-says-napped-night-of-his-death-2019-11">filed charges against the guards in November 2019</a>, alleging they napped and shopped online rather than do their job. The guards were also accused of falsely filling out forms saying they made their rounds in Epstein's cell block, when they actually didn't. Thomas was one of the guards who responded to a suicide attempt Epstein made a month earlier in a different jail cell, according to the indictment.According to prosecutors, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-jail-cell-footage-night-suicide-justice-department-2019-11">video footage showed that no one entered the area</a> holding Epstein's cell until 6:30 a.m. on August 10, when Noel and Thomas finally checked the cell and found him dead.Attorneys for the guards had argued that they were being unfairly punished for mismanagement from the federal Bureau of Prisons, the division of the Justice Department that oversees federal jails. The MCC had <a href="https://www.insider.com/brooklyn-federal-jail-mdc-holding-ghislaine-maxwell-r-kelly-problems-2021-9">been plagued by staffing and upkeep issues for years,</a> ultimately <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-jail-justice-department-will-close-metropolitan-correctional-center-2021-8">closing down in September</a>. As part of the deal, they agreed to sit down for interviews with the OIG's investigators. They also agreed that they falsely filled out the forms and would fulfill a number of community service hours. If the terms were satisfied, prosecutors would move to dismiss the criminal charges six months later.A person familiar with the investigation, who spoke to Insider on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record, said that the guards sat for the required interviews in June 2021. On December 13, <a href="https://www.insider.com/prosecutors-drop-case-against-jeffrey-epstein-jail-guards-2021-12">prosecutors signed a "nolle prosequi,"</a> a document that formally dropped the criminal charges."Through the deferred prosecution agreement, Ms. Noel was given the opportunity to assist the Government, which she has been willing to do since the beginning of their investigation," Noel's attorney, Jason Foy, said in a statement. "She shared the information known to her at the time of Jeffrey Epstein's death and more importantly, provided truthful insight into the toxic culture, subpar training, staffing shortages, and dysfunctional management of the now closed Metropolitan Correctional Center."The <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.526877/gov.uscourts.nysd.526877.64.0.pdf">nolle prosequi</a> said that Noel and Thomas complied with the terms of the deferred prosecution agreement. It was made public on December 30, one day after the jury in Maxwell's case returned their verdict.The OIG's office typically waits for any connected criminal cases to conclude before publishing a report so that it doesn't interfere with the proceedings, according to Bromwich.The person familiar with the OIG investigation told Insider that Justice Department officials waited until Maxwell's case was over to make the document public because they didn't want news of the dropped charges to influence the jury.<h2>The OIG can release its findings now that the guards' case is shut</h2>The final step in the process, Bromwich said, would be for the OIG to show a draft of its report to the Bureau of Prisons and allow 30 days for a written response. Horowitz can choose to integrate some of the agency's responses into his report at that point, and other witnesses are also sometimes permitted to review and respond to a draft of the report, Bromwich said.The former inspector general believes the agency is working within that final response period now. The report will likely offer the most detailed breakdown yet of the circumstances of Epstein's death. Investigators likely forensically studied the jail's video footage and interviewed everyone who made decisions about <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/23/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-suicide-death.html">Epstein's jail conditions</a>, such as why he wasn't assigned a cellmate after his previous suicide attempt, according to Bromwich.We may also learn why jail officials <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article240898251.html">kept Epstein in the same cell as an alleged quadruple murderer</a> at the time of his first suicide attempt, and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/17/nyregion/epstein-suicide-death.html">what the people who visited him while he was incarcerated</a> spoke about. The person familiar with the investigation told Insider the investigation may have also addressed the larger culture of dysfunction within the MCC.Investigators had two years to gather all the information they needed before interviewing Noel and Thomas. Talking to them was likely one of the last pieces of the puzzle, according to Bromwich."I would think that, given how long they had to wait for the criminal case against them to be disposed of, they were probably loaded for bear when they interviewed them," he said.

But, it won't be a Super Moon — the biggest the moon can be in the night sky. The natural satellite's orbit around the planet isn't circular but shaped like an eclipse. So a Super Moon only happens when the moon is as its closest to the earth — a point in its orbit called the perigee. At this point, the moon is around 363,300 kilometres away. In comparison, at apogee — the further point from earth in the moon's orbit — it is around 405,500 kilometres away. On Friday, the moon will still be <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/distance.html">four days away</a> from that point. By the time it reaches, the lunar eclipse will be long over and it will no longer be a full moon.

 Super Moons in 2020 According to astrologer <a href="http://www.astropro.com/features/tables/cen21ce/suprmoon.html">Richard Nolle</a>, there are only two Super Moons set to happen in 2020. One on March 9 and another a month later, on April 8 — the closest that the Moon will be to earth during a full Moon this year. However, another astrologer — <a href="http://astropixels.com/ephemeris/moon/fullperigee2001.html">Frmed Espenak</a> — believes that full moons on February 9 and May 7 will also be close enough to be classified as Super Moons.
