Jayson Carter made headlines <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ncaa-college-football-player-rice-is-only-4-foot-9-2011-10">when he made the Rice football team as a walk-on running back</a> despite being just 4-foot-9 and 135 pounds. Two years later, Carter made his debut with his first rushing attempt during Rice's 45-7 win over Texas-El Paso.
The play came late in the blowout when Carter, who has a <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/4-foot-9-running-back-jaysen-carter-first-050332153--ncaaf.html">genetic disorder that hindered his growth</a>, was called upon to make his first rushing attempt. <div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seaniz/3232739813/">Flickr/Urijamjari</a>Rice feeds about half of the world.</div>Commercially available rice imported into the U.S. contains <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22099990">levels of lead far higher</a> than what's considered safe, according to a study by the American Chemical Society and reported by Jason Palmer of the BBC.
The U.S. imports 7 percent of its rice. The team sampled packages from Bhutan, Italy, <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, Taiwan, India, Israel, the Czech Republic, and Thailand — accounting for 65 percent of U.S. imports — and found that rice from China and Taiwan had the highest <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword> levels.
When calculating lead intake, the team factored in how much rice particular demographics consume in a given day. 
Levels more than 10 times the "provisional total tolerable intake" (PTTI) set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are considered concerning to health.
The study found that lead levels for non-Asian adults ranged from 20 to 40 times above the PTTI. For Asian children it was 120 times.
Rice is very susceptible to environmental pollutants in irrigation water, and several rice-producing countries use unsanitary agricultural practices.
"If you look through the scientific literature, especially on India and China, they irrigate their crops with raw sewage effluent and untreated industrial effluent," Lead researcher Dr. Tsanangurayi Tongesayi of Monmouth University told the BBC.

<a href="http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/asia-pacific/china/111122/rice-2.0-toxic-rice-cadmium-poisoning-global-economy">Up to 10 percent</a> of rice grown in China contains heavy metals that probably entered the fertile farmlands in China’s south through industrial waste and sewage disposal.
Lead is harmful to organs and the central nervous system, especially in young children.
Rice products also contain "<a href="http://www.wkyc.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=261779">moderate to moderately high</a> levels of arsenic" (which is also highly toxic), according to a <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/daniellegould/2012/10/11/whats-in-your-rice-a-lot-of-arsenic-says-consumer-reports/">study</a> by Consumer Reports. Palmer notes that Dr. Tongesayi has also worked on quantifying arsenic contamination, and plans on testing the prevalence of other heavy metals.
"With a globalized food market, we eat food from every corner of the world, but pollution conditions are… different from region to region, but we ignore that," Tongesayi said.
The study will be published in the Journal of Environmental <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> and Health. The FDA told the BBC that it "plans to review the new research on lead levels in imported rice released today."

Still, on Saturday, the Rice Owls suffered a uniquely heartbreaking blow in an overtime loss against Middle Tennessee.Both teams traded scores in the final minute of regulation, building towards an overtime period that somehow brought even more chaos.Middle Tennessee had the first possession of the extra period, but the Rice defense held them to a field goal attempt, which kicker Crews Holt missed. All the Owls needed was a field goal of their own to win the game.Rather than fight hard for a touchdown, Rice played it safe with their overtime possession, rushing the ball three straight times to set up kicker Collin Riccitelli for a 45-yard field goal to win the game.Riccitelli's kick swayed right, bounced off of the right upright, then off of the crossbar, then off of the left crossbar, and then hit the crossbar a second time before finally refusing to go through.It is a field goal attempt that has to be seen to be believed.After the miss, Rice was stopped to start the second overtime period, and Middle Tennessee would score to win the game in just four plays. Cay, better known as Toñita, has been running the club for decades.On a normal Saturday night, she'd stand behind the bar selling $3 Coronas. The small club would be crowded, bodies smashed together. Loud music would play until 4 a.m.But today the room is empty, the coronavirus having stifled nightlife in all corners of the city. At first it was mostly a baseball clubhouse, and local ballplayers would come through with wives, girlfriends, and family. "And I have a hundred people outside waiting to go in. There's no fights, no arguments. People just come together from all different cultures and enjoy the night." The walls are filled with framed memories and knickknacks that visitors from all over have left behind. And for many patrons, talking to Toñita can be the highlight of the night."I even asked her for her blessing, which is in Spanish, we would say 'bendición,'" Alana Sola, a regular at the club, told Business Insider Today. " It's what you would do to your aunt, you will ask it to your mom, your dad. She even gives it to you, even if she doesn't remember who you are. So that to me feels like home."When Toñita serves up Coronas, people are drawn to the colorful rings of different figurines that adorn her fingers — today she's wearing a rooster, an owl, a kitten, a rabbit, and a lamb, among others. The rings, like her personality, have become something everyone remembers.<div type="image" title="still 7" height="1080" width="1920" msid="76902375" hostid="261"></div>"She just has this very authentic thing about her," Sola said. "And she's very unapologetic too, which I love. And this place feels like that. But as long as Toñita is standing, so is the club that bears her name."It's historic for Williamsburg. It's just the last of the last," Torres said. "There ain't nothing else."
