<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">People still talk about it, but how many actually remember seeing the New Coke cans that were intended to replace <keyword id="6391475" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coca-Cola">Coca-Cola</keyword> 28 years ago?<br /></span></p>

New Coke came with new packaging, a new logo, and a massive ad campaign.</p>
<p>While most drinkers <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1913612_1913610_1913608,00.html">actually preferred the new flavor</a> in a blind test, the New Coke campaign was a major flop. Coca-Cola diehards, <a href="http://www.retronaut.com/2013/03/new-coke/">Fidel Castro among them</a>, were outraged; the elimination of a brand they held dear was too upsetting to ignore.</p>
<p>Angry letters and phone calls flooded into the Atlanta HQ, and <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1913612_1913610_1913608,00.html">after just 79 days</a>, Coca-Cola was rotated back onto shelves, this time with "Classic" on the label.</p>

This Is What 'New Coke' Actually Looked Like In 1985

<p>Messages varied from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-soviets-extremely-intense-space-race-propaganda-posters-from-1958-1963-2012-4">inspiring photos of space travel</a> to <a href="http://www.retronaut.com/2013/04/soviet-anti-spy-posters/">heavy-handed warnings to potential spies.</a></p>
<p><keyword id="1424059" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retronaut">Retronaut</keyword> collected and translated a series of Soviet posters from the 1950s aimed at preventing information reaching U.S. spies inside the U.S.S.R.</p>

<p>Retronaut <a href="http://www.retronaut.com/2013/01/times-square-billboards/">collected incredible photos of Times Square in 1900</a> that show how that the city's hub hasn't changed as much as we'd think.</p>
<p>While it's certainly more crowded and filled with cabs rather than horse and buggies, <keyword id="67784" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Times-Square">Times Square</keyword> has always been an <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> hotspot.</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In recent decades, it's been focused on youth and pop culture. (Nicki Minaj is a current brand ambassador.) The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-real-reason-no-one-drinks-diet-pepsi-anymore-2012-12">brand has, of course, had its missteps</a>, but generally speaking Pepsi has released admirable work.</span></p>
<p>We took a look through <a href="http://www.retronaut.com/retronaut-cat/ads-and-brands-rtc/">Retronaut</a> and found a selection of ads the brand created in the 1950s.  </p>
<p>Back then, as today, the drink wanted to be sexy and modern. In its ads, the drink and its consumers were portrayed as super-classy, upscale types at the center of the social scene.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bureau of Reclamation/Dynamichrome</span></p><p class="caption">This looks terrifying both in color and in black-and-white.</p></div><p></p></div></div>History doesn't have to be just black-and-white.</p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/dynamichrome/">Dynamichrome</a> is a project dedicated to <a href="https://medium.com/dynamichrome-viewfinder">digitally reconstructing</a> historical photos in color, offering a brighter glimpse into the past. </p><p>One photo even shows the Eiffel Tower in its original reddish-brown color. It's been painted multiple times since then.</p><p>Dynamichrome's director, Jordan Lloyd, teamed up with <a href="http://www.retronaut.com/">Retronaut</a> website founder Wolfgang Wild to create a book featuring 130 of these photographs. "<a href="https://unbound.co.uk/books/paper-time-machine">The Paper Time Machine</a>" is currently being crowdfunded. </p><p>Check out some of the reconstructed historical photos below.</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>An iconic American company infuriated even the most loyal of its customers 30 years ago - all in the name of cost-cutting.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Coca-Cola <a href="http://www.coca-colacompany.com/history/the-real-story-of-new-coke" target="_blank">announced on April 23, 1985</a> that it would discontinue its beloved Coca-Cola in favor of a new product that millions derisively called "New Coke." The experiment did not last very long.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">New Coke was a disaster from the start.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">It came across to many as an irrational reaction to the surge in sales of Pepsi-Cola. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Pepsi was enjoying popularity after successful marketing campaigns such as the "taste test challenge" and "Choice of a New Generation" featuring stars like singer Michael Jackson.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Coca-Cola was 99-years-old at the time. The company told the media it was adjusting its formula for modern tastebuds. New Coke beat Pepsi in a battery of taste tests, executives insisted.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Author Constance L.
